Top tips for best audio quality

A few months ago, we published a blog post on Skype call quality on mobile devices, and highlighted a list of the top-rated devices to use with Skype.

Today we’d like to dive a little deeper into what you can do to improve the audio quality of your Skype calls by using USB and Bluetooth accessories.

According to the feedback you send us after your calls, many sound quality issues are related to audio capture with laptop, tablet, or mobile phone integrated microphones. Users of such devices are not always well heard, or the far end caller hears either background noise or an echo of their own voice (which is actually the output of the near end device’s loudspeaker captured by the microphone and sent back to the far end).

In your feedback on call quality, we see that calls made with USB and Bluetooth headsets receive significantly higher star ratings and have only a fraction of the audio quality issues compared to calls made with integrated audio devices.

In some situations, a USB speakerphone or webcam accessory is a more suitable solution than a headset. From an audio quality perspective, those are almost as good as headsets, especially when used in a relatively quiet environment.

To help you select a suitable audio accessory, we have now published a list of the USB webcams and headsets which have received the best ratings from Skype users.
