What would you see if you video called the world this May?

Wherever you are in the world, it's super easy to stay in touch and share your experiences with cheap international calls and free Skype video calls. But what would you see if you video called the world this May? Read on to find out...

Video call Sweden ... for Walpurgis Eve - the feast of the witches
Every year on May 1st, - or 'Walpurgis Eve' - thousands of Swedes light bonfires and fireworks in the hope of scaring witches flying to their annual Sabbath in the Harz Mountains of Germany.

If you video call Sweden on Walpurgis Eve (or Valborg as it is sometimes known), you'll see old and young gathering around bonfires, lighting fireworks, and singing and dancing into the night. You might want to keep one eye on the sky though, just in case a witch or her familiar shows up too.

Video call Stilton, England ... for cheese-rolling
London will soon be in the spotlight when the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations kick off, but the village of Stilton in Cambridgeshire will be trying to get its fair share of attention until then - with its cheese-rolling competition.

On May 7th, thousands of people will come to Stilton to roll cheese wheels down the village's main street. Stilton is famous for its strong-smelling blue cheese, so competition will be fierce to be the village's champion cheese roller. Prince William and his wife Catherine are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, so they may even come along to the event.

Video call Laos ... for the Rocket Festival
Every year, the Lao festival of Boun Bang Fai sees thousands of home-crafted bamboo rockets launched into the air, where it's hoped they'll open-up the skies and kick-start the rainy season.

The festival takes place all month long in different villages and towns, so if you know anyone travelling in Laos, they're bound to run into a colorful parade and rocket launch or two - just ask them to video call you from their cell so you can take part in the celebrations too.

Video call Ypres ... for Kattenstoet
The Belgian town of Ypres is sadly remembered due to World War I. But on May 13th, Ypres will celebrate Kattenstoet - a yearly festival dedicated to cats that draws fans from all over the world.

In medieval times, cats would be thrown from the city's bell tower as many people thought they were witch's familiars and evil spirits. Nowadays, the cat is celebrated - not feared - and a massive cat parade with super-sized floats will parade through the streets of Ypres. Some locals even dress up in medieval costumes to mark the city's past, and a jester will throw stuffed cats and teddy bears from the belfry too, for feline-fans to catch and take home as a memento.

Skype group video calling... How can you use it?

Here at Skype, we love music. We also love exploring everything group video calling can do.

So when we recently had the idea to merge music and group video, we couldn't help ourselves. Without pause we got a hold of our rockstar friends, Scarlett Grey, and asked if they'd like to put on gigs in three different cities. A routine request, they probably thought.

Then came the twist...

The gigs would all happen at precisely the same time via Skype group video calling. Yes, one band, one performance in three very different cities.

Could it be done?

Well, we see that as a definite 'yes'.

So how can you get the most out of Skype group video calling?

Here are a few things to try:

• Grab a bunch of friends who love to mix it up in the kitchen and enjoy a group cook along.

• Bring your gym buddies together for an impromptu home work out. Don't forget to shout out something upbeat to keep everyone motivated!

• Have a group of friends who love to read? Put up a pot of tea and meet from everyone's living room.

• Gather old college mates for a drink and chat about old times. Be prepared for some serious laughs.

The possibilities are pretty much endless. Who would you bring together with Skype and group video calling?

What would you see if you video called the world this February?

Wherever you are in the world, it's easy to stay connected with free Skype video calls and cheap international calls. But, what would you see if you video called the world this February?

Video call Iceland ... and see the Northern Lights
February is one of the best months to see the Northern Lights in Scandinavia. Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, is a great spot to catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis - especially in February, when the city hosts its own Winter Lights Festival. If you're in the area, or know someone who is, video call and check out the celebrations.

Video call Vienna ... and see the Johann Strauss Ball
If you've ever dreamed of dancing a romantic waltz or attending a ball, then make sure to video call Vienna this month and take a peep at the Johann Strauss Ball on February 11. Honoring the famous composer, this grand soiree will see guests learn the waltzes and re-enact the classical balls that once occurred at the world-famous Kursalon Wien.

Video call Terni, Italy ... for St. Valentine's Day
St. Valentine's Day is thought to be in memory of two sainted martyrs - St. Valentine of Rome and St. Valentine of Terni. It's believed that, in 270 AD, the Roman Emperor Claudius II forbade soldiers to marry during wartime. (The then) Bishop Valentine of Terni defied orders and performed secret wedding ceremonies. After being caught, he was jailed and executed - but not before writing a love note to the jailor's daughter, signing it, "From your Valentine." The remains of St. Valentine now lie in Terni Cathedral, and all through February there will be carnivals, fireworks displays, and more in his honor.

Video call China ... and see the Chinese New Year Spring Festival
Chinese New Year may have taken place on January 23, but in China the celebrations go on until mid-February. This month, China will celebrate the end of the New Year festivities and welcome the Year of the Dragon with a lantern festival. If you're in China, video call from your mobile phone, so your friends and family can see thousands of lanterns glow above you.

Video call New Zealand ... for an Art Deco Weekend
Think Great Gatsby, flapper dresses, and the Roaring Twenties. While New Zealand may not be the first place you associate with the Jazz Age, in February thousands of Art Deco fans meet up to dress up and tour Hawkes Bay in the town of Napier - a neighborhood rebuilt in the 1920s is one of the world's best examples of Art Deco design. If you know anyone in the area, make sure to video call. Or if you're in the neighborhood, why not go all out with a video call from the back of a vintage car touring the city while wearing your flapper finery?

Video call Washington, D.C. ... for Black History Month
February is Black History Month. This year will mark a celebration of the lives, achievements, and contributions of African American women such as Ella Fitzgerald, Rosa Parks, and Maya Angelou. While there will be events across America, ask folks you know in Washington, D.C. to video call you from their smartphone so you can see celebrations like the Navy Memorial and U.S. Navy Band Diversity Concerts.

Students get back to Skype when back to school

Striking out on your own for a university experience can be trying at first, but with Skype, you can keep your parents on the line while chatting up new friends from lecture.

Setting off for university - especially when you'll be far from your home town, your parents and childhood friends - is one of life's great adventures. You'll meet new friends, learn new things and share ideas - but you'll still want to keep in touch with those back home.

For video calling mom and dad, sharing your experiences with friends back home or at universities of their own - or maybe even collaborating online with the cutie next to you in lecture - you can choose Skype for quick and easy communication.

Your parents will probably be worried sending off their baby for the first time into the great wide world. And while you might think it's a bit silly, all it takes is a quick - and free - video call to let them know you're doing well... and maybe to ask to borrow a little money if you've run out.

This could especially come in handy if you're out of your home country, as Skype offers some of the cheapest international calls around.

Both internet calls and instant messaging are a great way to keep in touch with friends still in your home town or those who've chosen a different university. You can even use Skype to track down your daring friend as he treks through India on a gap year adventure.

But of course, university is all about stretching your legs, striking out on your own - and maybe you might even learn a thing or two. You can use Skype to collaborate with your new classmates or just chat with interesting people you've met at there.

If you've used Skype to make some new friends or keep in touch with old ones, share your story in our comments section!

Vacation Bound

Everyone needs a vacation, and this week, I'm packing my bags and leaving the city for a week to spend some time with my family. Even though I'll be out of the office and away from my computer, I plan to take Skype with me so I can stay connected with my friends and family members who will not be able to be there with me.

First stop on my vacation is my cousin's wedding, which is bound to be a good time. Unfortunately, not all my family members can make it to the wedding. However, with Skype video calling on my iPhone, I'll be able to show my aunt in California what the wedding festivities are like in real-time. Since I have my phone with me no matter where I am, she will be able to see everything from the bridal party preparing to my cousin walking down the aisle. And, if I find out that there are other family members who cannot make it, I can easily bring along my MacBook and use Skype Group Video Calling to include up to ten people on one call. I'm sure my cousin will be excited to find out how many virtual guests are in attendance!

After the wedding festivities, I plan to spend plenty of time relaxing on the beach with my family and friends. Of course, I'll make sure my iPhone is with me at all times, so I can video and voice call, as well as IM, my friends while I'm away from home.

Are you going on any summer vacations? If so, how do you plan to bring Skype along for the ride? Leave a comment and let us know.

Follow That Fire Engine

This Sunday (18th July), a group of 22 friends will set out on a mission to set the Guinness World Record for the longest emergency call out!

FOLLOW THAT FIRE ENGINE (FTFE), an expedition led by Steve Moore, will leave London on July 18th to travel across five continents, visit 28 countries and cover 26,000 miles over a nine month period.

FTFE is dedicated to the memory of Steve's father, Garth Moore, a Fire Fighter who died of lung-cancer this time last year. The goal is to raise money and awareness for three charities: Macmillan Cancer Support, The Fire Fighters Charity & Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. All funds raised will go directly to the charities, with the crew stumping up their own cash for shipping, fuel and living expenses.

Skype are stepping in to help cut costs by providing the crew with two mobile phones, an HD Webcam, Headset & Skype account with pre-loaded credit. With this, they will be able to keep in touch with their family and friends throughout the journey.

Watch this space for further updates and stories. Please visit their website to show your support http://www.followthatfireengine.com/ and join us in wishing them all the best as they set out.

Travel disruption: 5 essential tips

Skype video call

Between the ash cloud and threatened strikes, travel troubles have been in the news quite a bit recently. Labour disputes, natural disasters, bankruptcy, or even just a heavy snowstorm can throw the best laid travel plans to the wind. And whether you’ve been grounded by hot air or hot tempers, these top tips should smooth those ruffled flying feathers.

1. Find a comfortable, quiet space to relax

Don’t underestimate the value of a quiet hotel room, free from distractions. Or a table at a restaurant mid-afternoon when lunchtime business has died down. Hang up the do-not-disturb sign, and turn down the air conditioning to minimise noise, or find a quiet corner in an airport terminal.

2. Use Skype Access to get online

When you’re on your travels, connecting to WiFi hotspots can be, well, a right pain. Fiddling with your credit card, inserting numbers, etc. Skype Access removes that hassle – simply pay-per-minute for the time you need, and pay with your Skype Credit.

3. Use a headset

A great headset gives vastly improved sound quality with Skype, and makes long calls much more comfortable. It also keeps your calls private, as well as helping to eliminate background noise in busy areas like airports and stations.

4. Don’t forget the incredible power of video calls

Video calling is the next best thing to being there. And with the latest version of Skype for Windows, you can make group video calls with up to 5 people. You’ll be able to see the whole family even if you’re stuck at the other end of the country, or join an important meeting from the other side of the world. Pick up a webcam and you’ll be ready to go.

5. If you’re an employer, use Skype Manager to distribute Skype Credit to your stranded employees

This one’s for the boss – Skype Manager lets you allocate Skype Credit to your employees from a central pool, and automatically top up their accounts when they’re running low.

Do you have any advice to share? Let us know in the comments below.

A new arrival on the Plastiki

The Plastiki is a boat like no other – made almost entirely out of plastic bottles, it’s plying its way across the Pacific, inspired by the famous Kon-Tiki voyage, and aiming to raise awareness of sustainability issues.

We’ve been following the Plastiki team as they go, and talking to them over Skype. Last week, Vern Moen, one of the crew, was able to see his baby son born on a Skype video call, despite being in the middle of the ocean. Thankfully, one of the other crewmembers just happened to have a camera ready, and you can watch the results above :)
