A Follow-up on Skype for String

Remember how as a kid you played with your friends or siblings and pretended to call one another. This particular idea was so simple - using a tin can or paper cup on one end, which was connected to another tin can or paper cup on the other end with a string.

This very simple idea not only inspired Skype's April Fool's Day Joke last month, but it also inspired a creative idea in our Time for Skype integrated marketing campaign. We wanted to bring back the sensibility of good ol' fashion communication and the 'more human' approach to staying in touch with friends and family.

We've developed a comprehensive campaign made up of offline and online digital media placements. One of the digital executions is a heart-warming video showcasing children playing with tin cans and string.

It hopefully reminds you of a childhood moment you've probably experienced, and hopefully reminds you of the meaningful connection you can have with those you care about using Skype. We hope you enjoy this particular piece of our campaign, which I happen to think is the perfect follow-up on 'Skype for String.'

Free wireless access to keep in touch this Mother's Day

Last Mother's Day, we found out that up to 1 in 6 of the nation's mums could have been left without a card.

The research, which was carried out by TNS Omnibus on behalf of Skype, showed that almost 20% of 25-34 year olds admitted to forgetting to send their Mum a card on Mother's Day.

This year we wanted to make sure that disappointed mum's were a thing of the past, and so for this weekend Skype is enabling access to free Wi-Fi through Skype Wi-Fi throughout the UK so users can quickly connect to the Internet for voice and video calls to wish their mum a Happy Mother's Day.

Skype Wi-Fi can help users cut down on costs by providing the means to use Skype Credit to pay low per-minute rates for online access at over 1 million third party Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide directly from their PC or smartphone.**

From 0001 GMT on the 17th March 2012 to 2359 GMT on the 18th March 2012 we're giving everyone in the UK up to one hour of Skype Wi-Fi for free!

For those looking to earn even more brownie points, skip the traditional cards and tell her how awesome she is with a 'Mom, you rock' group video greeting. Take your pick from glam rock to heavy metal, and send her a video message like nothing she's seen before.

This is your chance to show her that you've gone the extra mile this year, and we're even giving you the opportunity to show off your vocal talents. Yes, you can sing along with the band (or not, completely up to you) and your mom's heart will swell with pride.

What are you waiting for? Say it with Skype. http://apps.facebook.com/sayitwithskype/

Wear red this February, over Skype ...

Today is National Wear Red Day. "Go red for women" over Skype and help support groups like The American Heart Association promote heart health.

Wear Red Day

You'll probably have noticed lots of people wearing red today. It's no fashion coincidence. February 3rd is National Wear Red Day®. Each year on the first Friday in February, thousands of individuals, groups, and companies "Go Red" to raise awareness and funds for the fight against heart disease in women.

As part of the Wear Red Day campaign, the American Heart Association asks people to rally together in red and donate just $5 each in aid of our sisters, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and friends affected by cardiovascular disease and strokes. Sadly, heart disease is currently the No. 1 killer of women in the USA.

Every person who wears red, donates $5, or helps to raise awareness about heart disease today will be helping heart health awareness groups across the nation reach their goal of preventing 1 million heart attacks and strokes over the next 5 years.

You can find out more about women's heart health and your cardiovascular risk factors through the American Heart Association.

But please, don't forget to help raise awareness this National Wear Red Day® by going red over Skype.

How to "go red" over Skype:

If you're wearing red on February 3, make sure everyone knows by using Skype to ...

• Wear red when you video call

It doesn't matter how much red you're wearing today. If you're wearing a red dress, a red shirt, or even a Go Red baseball cap make sure everyone you video call knows why you've "gone red for women."

• Update your profile and let your contacts know you're wearing red

Update your profile and let everyone know that you're supporting Wear Red Day. Direct your contacts to websites where they can find out more about heart disease, how to keep their heart healthy, and how to donate to the American Heart Association. You could even update your profile throughout the day - when you've finished getting dressed, when you've made your donation, and when you've received a compliment on the red clothes you're wearing - to help keep Wear Red Day on everyone's minds.

Don't worry if you've forgotten to wear red today. You can still help raise awareness and promote heart health over Skype ...

• Use a heart emoticon

Give Wear Red Day a little heart by using a heart emoticon when you instant message over Skype. You could even ask your Skype contacts to send a heart emoticon along with an explanation about Wear Red Day and heart health awareness to all of their Skype contacts. Who knows - the love chain you start today could help save someone's life.

• Spread the word about Wear Red Day by Skype File Send

Show your support for Wear Red Day and get more people involved by sharing free downloadable Go Red awareness materials online, over Skype. Just register at goredforwomen.org for your support pack. You'll instantly receive an email with heart health information and posters that you can Skype File Send to your family, friends, and contacts.

Use Skype to take Wear Red Day global ...

America isn't the only country to wear red in support of heart health. Brits also wear red on February 24 to raise awareness about heart conditions and to fundraise for The British Heart Foundation.

So, you don't have to restrict going red over Skype to just one day this month.

Go red over Skype all the way through February and you could help take Wear Red Day and its heart healthy messages global - especially if you use video calls or cheap international calls to stay in touch with friends, family, colleagues, or business contacts around the world.

Wearing red might even help you raise a smile when you call overseas, as some cultures associate the color red with luck, prosperity, courage, and love.

• Across the world, red is thought to symbolize love, emotion, and passion.
• In China, red is associated with luck, passion, courage, loyalty, honor, success, and happiness.
• In Japan, red is the color most associated with heroes.
• In India, red is the favorite color of brides, as it's linked with love, purity, beauty, and wealth.
• In Central Africa, red is the color used by warriors and is a symbol of life, death, and healing.
• In Spain, red is thought to symbolize the country's traditions and cultural heritage, like bull fighting and flamenco dancing.

Are you wearing red today? Have you gone red over Skype? Do you have any tips on how to "go red for women" and raise awareness over Skype? Please share your comments with us, below ...

Recapping DoSomething.org's "Grandparents Gone Wired" Campaign

In December, we told you about Skype and DoSomething.org's exciting holiday campaign to help adults age 65 and older get wired. By inspiring tech savvy teens to share their knowledge with seniors, Skype's goal was to help more people stay connected through technology - both during the holiday season and year-round. We're now thrilled to share the success of the first "Grandparents Gone Wired" campaign!

After reaching out to DoSomething.org's network of teen volunteers across the country, through social media channels and to educators via Skype in the classroom, over 12,000 participants signed up to help seniors in their communities learn how to keep in touch with others online using programs such as Skype, Gmail and Facebook. We're excited to think of all the adults age 65 and older that now understand how to use these tools to stay in touch with loved ones from afar.

Even more, we can only imagine how helping others impacted these teens in a positive way! Kayla Kawalec, one of the participating teens (pictured below), commented: "At first, my grandparents were perfectly fine being 'disconnected.' They thought learning how to use Skype and Facebook would be too hard, and before this December they never even owned a computer. Once I explained how easy it really was, they were very interested and excited to learn how to communicate with their friends and family online."

GGW.jpg

While the first "Grandparents Gone Wired" campaign has concluded, we hope teens around the world will continue to educate seniors in their lives on how to stay connected using technology tools like Skype. If you plan to teach your grandparents, family friends, or others how to use Skype, leave a comment and share your story with us.

Host Your Virtual Holiday Dinner with Help from Weiden+Kennedy and Skype

Leaving holiday traditions behind and stepping into the future, we loved hearing about a wonderful treat from advertising agency, Wieden + Kennedy, which is hosting their second annual virtual holiday dinner. With the help of Skype video calls, Wieden + Kennedy lets you participate in a virtual holiday meal with humanoid robot dolls. Sounds like something out of the Jetsons!

According to Los Angeles Times, here's how it works

You reserve 30 minutes of table time at virtualholidaydinner.com and at the appointed time you and four friends or co-workers or family members, or strangers -- all call into the dinner via Skype where your heads will appear on flat screens that sit on top the robot doll bodies. The company, known for its work with Nike, has employed facial tracking software so that if you turn your head at home, your virtual robot doll also turns his or her head. The room that the dolls are sitting in has been elaborately decorated to add to the holiday spirit.

Go to virtualholidaydinner.com, and you can sign up and invite four other members to call into dinner via Skype. We encourage you to watch the video below, showing how the virtual holiday dinner works. Talk about innovative!

And she can't wait to help us do the same, adding: "A friend of mine made me a picture book/sculpture birthday card thing and called it 'Little Book of Heap' with a mini Tim Burton-esque version of me. The Uruguayan American School of Montevideo held a Skype video call with Mr. Dave Lefkowitz and his World Studies class in Oregon. The discussions focused on the meanings and definitions of what peace meant to them individually, how to promote peace in their lives, and shared their favourite peace quotes and agents of change in this area.

It was a great way to build a bridge of peaceful intent between two countries and the beginning of what will surely be a lasting and peaceful friendship! They even saw and heard from Pakistani students as they joined the conversation too. The excitement of parties from all over the world engaging in this day of peace was inspiring. See some of the project feedback here.

Peace One Day's Global Truce countdown:
For Peace Day 2012, Peace One Day is calling for and working towards a Global Truce - a day of ceasefire and non-violence observed by all sectors of society globally. POD hopes this will be the largest reduction in global violence in recorded history, both domestically and internationally.

Enter the Digital Revolutions Competition and win up to £10,000

BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, together with Sheffield Doc/Fest and Crossover, have launched a short film competition called 'Digital Revolutions'. Entrants must submit films up to three minutes long, that show how they see the world they live in, and how information and information technology impacts it. The aim is to build the largest creative picture of what information and information technology means for Great Britain today. "We want people in the UK to tell us how their lives have been changed by information and information technology and what this might mean for their communities in the future," says President of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, Elizabeth Sparrow.

The competition is taking a unique approach by looking at how entrants use social media to get their films noticed. Building a fan base for your film will be as challenging as creating the film itself. A panel of judges will select a shortlist of entrants who will be invited to the annual Sheffield Doc/Fest, and receive a golden ticket to attend the entire festival - a must-do for any aspiring or professional filmmaker. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony during the festival. On top of all this, there is a £10,000 prize for the best amateur film, and a £5,000 prize for the best professional film.

To give you a little inspiration, check out this video uploaded by a lovely young boy who shows us how information technology, and more specifically, how Skype impacts his life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBkMHsX5WSs. You can also view all other video entries here: http://www.youtube.com/user/bcsdigirevolutions

There are no minimum requirements on the production of the film - you could even use your mobile phone to film. So whip out your camera out and show 'Digital Revolutions' how being online affects your everyday world. Entries close on 21 October 2010.

Charity mission to set Guinness World Record on fire

Circumnavigating the globe is a challenging feat at best, so doing it in a 13 year old fire engine, over nine months, is truly remarkable.

Skype is proud to be supporting Follow That Fire Engine, a round the world mission that should see a crew of 25 friends break a Guinness World Record and raise money for three charitable causes - Macmillan Cancer Support, The Fire Fighters Charity and The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. We provided them with Skype credit, headsets, webcams, an iPhone3G and a Nokia N900 to help them stay in touch with friends and family back home.

The 26,000-mile mission is already over one month in, after departing from the London Greenwich Mean Line in July.

Currently in Mongolia, and speeding towards China, the feat is being led by expedition leader Steve Moore (32), dedicated to the memory of his father, Garth Moore, who passed away on 18th July 2009 at the age of 63, after a brave battle with lung cancer.
I spoke to Steve earlier this week and he told me how the Skype kit has helped all of the crew to stay connected with loved ones back home. "Through Northern Europe, into the vast plains of Russia, Kazakhstan, and the deserts of Mongolia, we've used the Skype gear to communicate, when we otherwise would have been totally isolated."

To follow the fire engine's epic journey over the coming months, or donate to the cause, please visit its website, or follow the journey on Facebook or Twitter (@FollowEngine).

100% of all donations go directly to the charities supported - the crew is self-funding the entire trip.

Follow That Fire Engine

This Sunday (18th July), a group of 22 friends will set out on a mission to set the Guinness World Record for the longest emergency call out!

FOLLOW THAT FIRE ENGINE (FTFE), an expedition led by Steve Moore, will leave London on July 18th to travel across five continents, visit 28 countries and cover 26,000 miles over a nine month period.

FTFE is dedicated to the memory of Steve's father, Garth Moore, a Fire Fighter who died of lung-cancer this time last year. The goal is to raise money and awareness for three charities: Macmillan Cancer Support, The Fire Fighters Charity & Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. All funds raised will go directly to the charities, with the crew stumping up their own cash for shipping, fuel and living expenses.

Skype are stepping in to help cut costs by providing the crew with two mobile phones, an HD Webcam, Headset & Skype account with pre-loaded credit. With this, they will be able to keep in touch with their family and friends throughout the journey.

Watch this space for further updates and stories. Please visit their website to show your support http://www.followthatfireengine.com/ and join us in wishing them all the best as they set out.

Your chance to appear on Eurosport Soccer City Live - via Skype

Eurosport’s brand new show, Soccer City Live, is looking for fans to discuss the day’s events with their panel of experts over a Skype video call.

Hosted by German journalist Gernot Bauer, this daily evening round-up show will come from Eurosport’s on-site studio at the centrepiece of the World Cup, the backdrop of Johannesburg’s spectacular Soccer City stadium at 2300 CET. Eurosport’s journalists and consultants will deliver expert analysis on the day’s events, match reviews and other top stories – and you can get involved via a Skype video call.

All you have to do is add their Skype account to your contact list. Between 1400 and 1600 CET every day from 11th June until 11th July, the producers will choose one or more fans to appear on the show, so you’ll need to be online during that time to tell them your question. You’ll also need to be a fluent English speaker and have a headset or microphone and a suitable webcam, along with the latest version of Skype. If you’re selected, you’ll need to be available later in the evening to speak to one of the experts.

It’s your chance to talk the talk with some of the biggest names in football – you can talk tactics, discuss the selection or simply chat about the day’s gossip. The choice is yours :)

A chat with Martha Lane Fox about digital inclusion

I caught up with Martha Lane Fox, the UK’s digital champion, to talk about Race Online 2012 and the Pass IT on campaign. She reveals that there are 10 million people in the UK who have never used the Internet – and appeals for your help in bridging that gap.

Worryingly, four million of these people are also amongst the country’s most socially excluded. So the people who have the most to gain from the internet – whether to overcome isolation or to save money – are the ones who are missing out. And this pattern plays out all over the world.

So, wherever you are, if you know someone who is unsure about whether or not to get online, now’s the time to tell them about the benefits.

And in the UK, the Pass IT on website has plenty of useful resources. Additionally, tomorrow is Silver Surfers’ Day in the UK, so stay tuned for another update from us in the next day or two.
