Skype 2.2 Beta for Linux
Skype 2.2 Beta for Linux, codenamed ‘Access Granted’, is here and brings Skype Access to our Linux users. Skype Access lets you connect to over 500,000 WiFi hotspots worldwide using your Skype Credit.
We’ve improved audio and video quality and reliability, and have addressed the ‘multiple calls’ scenario: you can now receive a second call while a call is ongoing; you can hold and answer it or join the two calls into a conference call.
Finally we fixed a number of problems identified by our internal and external users:
- Ubuntu users experienced PulseAudio issues with the latest versions
- KDE users experienced graphic issues using the default Oxygen style
- and many more – check our release notes
Don’t forget to read the known issues list and to use the forum for the most critical issues you may encounter trying this new release.
Enjoy!
Marco and the Skype for Linux team

Good to see an italian =)
Anyway hope to see soon the release 2.x out of beta and see Skype 5 also for GNU/Linux.

Great!!!! Thank you!
Do you plan to support the application indicator in Ubuntu 11.04?
mazurkiewicz.damian commented Wednesday, Apr 6
Thank You, there is still not so many changes but it's great to see something moving. What about this Open Source client thing?
straka7066 commented Wednesday, Apr 6
Yupiii! After years of promises we have finally native 64bit version.
Thanks a lot.
nuclear-head commented Wednesday, Apr 6
Kudos!
Hope to hear more often from you guys both on the blog and the forum
ajnasz commented Wednesday, Apr 6
Still far behind from the other platform's. Isn't it only a build from your master branch, what the last Linux developer left behind?
Why don't you release a lib, which makes possible to build a client on it? At least a closed source one?
maltest commented Wednesday, Apr 6
The first comment is about Windows (
That guy must be joking. Unfortunately! I know it is hard supporting Linux, because of the vast difference of desktop environments, sound architectures and whatnot. So why not make use of the community and put out Libskype? Then all the VoIP apps and IMs in Linux can just adopt and include that. You wouldn't need to support any ui or sound stuff yourself. That would be soooo much cheaper for you guys.

skype-wrapper comes from non Skype pakcages, probably Ubuntu's one. Be sure to uninstall first all non official packages and then install ours.

What about the open-source client that was promised more than a year ago? Any news?
calum.johnson.censis commented Wednesday, Apr 6
Thank you for working on this again. I'd love to see the previously mentioned open-source client get released, but I'm glad that you haven't given up on the Linux user base. I use (and pay money for) Skype on Linux every day.
nitram35x commented Wednesday, Apr 6
Would you guys please stop making new win$ versions for a while and spend your time in updating the GUI from the linux version? Or better, rewrite the whole thing. It just sucks.
rolandixor commented Wednesday, Apr 6
Nice April fools joke, cause obviously Skype thinks linux users are fools.
fabio.albieri commented Wednesday, Apr 6
I'm glad I NO longer spend any money with Skype. After a year of waiting, this is a joke.
thomas.zangerl commented Wednesday, Apr 6
Thanks for the new version and that Skype continues to port their latest codecs to the Linux version.
However, maybe you could think about shorter release cycles or just Blog updates announcing that something is moving. I'm never quite sure whether the Skype for Linux development is dead or still alive
daniil_varlamov commented Wednesday, Apr 6
Thank you very much. Hope you'll tell release final version soon.

This is a joke! C`mon Skype! One year of development and you got from 2.1 beta to 2.2 beta!?! Where is the open-source version, where is skype 5.x for Linux? Why Skype hates Linux so much?
tomchiv commented Wednesday, Apr 6
Hurrah ! (although about time !).
*Please* do not inflict the same GUI on us as Mac and Windows users have though, keep it simple and clean.
Any progress on decoupling the UI from the application library, so tools like PIdgin and Kopete can use it without needing to show the main GUI ? This was announced about a year ago...
Also, why the lack of any progress updates at all for a year ?

crimsonflame123 commented Wednesday, Apr 6
Video not working on Fedora 14. Its dark. I saw the known issues section about doing LD_PRELOAD for the libv4l library. Did that too and still didnt work. Is there a workaround?
evil_aculas commented Wednesday, Apr 6
Why don't you guys or even if it's a one-guy team, indulge us at least visually? Let us have the option of removing the skype icon from the taskbar, or at least give us a monochrome icon for the taskbar. I don't understand what the problem is there? Is it against skype's trademark policies or mission statement? An explanation would be alright with me, at least I am curious to know what the problem is. You gotta be flexible! All OS's have different appeals, and if you want to be successful at what you do, you should listen to your customers at least to the extent when issues or needs can be satisfied. And believe me many people want to have at least the option of having a monochrome icon in the task bar. Thanks!
vazso.hu commented Wednesday, Apr 6
I don't believe it. Is there a new version of Skype for Linux?
...but this is still named as beta... and there is still a big gap between the version numbers of Skype for Windows and Linux.
In the near future, is there at least a little chance for the Linux version to be not far from the main, developed version of Skype?
Will be any other updates in the following one or two years?
Sorry for my comment, I would like to have an up-to-date and developed Skype on my system and there was absolutely no change in the last year(s) in the code, which is a bit annoying situation, like being alone in the dark forest...
Anyway, many thanks for working on this version of Skype. I really hope there will be much more resources/developers in the near future to be many improvements in this client.
mkoedding commented Thursday, Apr 7
Thanks, guys! I also hope Linux will get some more attention at Skype in the future...

gaygerbil commented Thursday, Apr 7
I'm really happy about this, glad it's not a massive overhaul changing it Skype 5, I don't want Skype 5 on Linux honestly, /fb/ integration and all that stuff just seems like bloatware to me. Rather keep it simple, and I have seen many bugs fixed in this release. Glad to see it. Good work Skype, a lil late but still good.
sezer.yalcin commented Thursday, Apr 7
Oh, finally you decided to make your shittiest skype version(linux) less shitty. Sofware companies pay little importance to linux because linux users are power users and always find a cheaper/better alternative. But your are not selling this software and I am paying you for skype in and out anyways but still use your shittiest client version. Thank you skype management.
tryfonaration commented Thursday, Apr 7

genki-adrian commented Thursday, Apr 7
Hi and thanks for the updated build for Linux. I haven't had the time yet to test, but the first thing that jumped to my eyes is that you obviously support outdated distributions. Both Ubuntu 8.10 and Debian 5 are "oldstable" and no longer maintained or maintenance is going to be dropped soon. Same is valid for Fedora 10.
Current versions should be:
Ubuntu 10.04+
Debian 6+
Fedora 13+
Mind that, especially when chosing the build and install dependencies. Also, it would be nice if you created a 64bit Debian package as well until Multi-Arch has arrived on Debian. Currently I deploy the 64bit package from Ubuntu on our network machines.
And is there still no chance for a native 64bit binary? I mean, there are ports of SkypeKit for MIPS and ARM(?), so the code is at least somewhat portable. I suppose it's the whole code obfuscation story of the Skype binaries to prevent reverse-engineering and disassembly which makes porting so "difficult", right? This would also explain why SkypeKit has not been disclosed into public, it probably lacks this code obfuscation which made it easier to port but less safe against RE and disassembly.

At least we have a usable client with the core functionality!
Any info on how you're implementing the open client would be much appreciated. Surely at some point you need to start communicating with the community, releasing an API etc ... to allow people to start work on frontends with their favourite toolkits .... No?

Glad to see linux version isn't dead as it may seem from rare updates. Do you plan to invest any effort in reducing wakeups from idle though? Skype wakes up much more often than Quassel IRC client while it's open doing nothing (as in no chats or calls active). I find myself exciting Skype when on battery for that reason.

Thanks, guys! Good to get the update. And thanks, also, for keeping it a light, clean interface. So far, it is working well on a couple of Ubuntu 10.10 systems I'm running, one in 32-bit, one in 64-bit.

reytiger commented Sunday, Apr 10
I was quite shocked to see this update.
You guys should probably stress that the version numbers across different platforms don't match up. Aka Skype v2 on windows is not what we on Linux have now.
Just make group chat and calls a bit beefier and I'll be satisfied with the software as is.

The Skype (Beta) 2.2.0.25 pgrade pushed out by Canonical for Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS fails to launch. The message is:
Could not launch 'Skype'
Failed to execute child process "skype-wrapper" (No such file or directory)
A binary called skype-wrapper installed by the earlier version of Skype from the Canonical repository was apparently deleted by the upgrade, but it failed to install a replacement launcher in the Applications menu. It's poor testing before release to the user base.
Also, Skype still doesn't show up in the Indicator Applet on the panel, and if one closes its GUI window by clicking on the "X" in the upper right corner, Skype is left running in the background as a sleeping zombie program, consuming CPU resources; one must resort to the System Monitor to "kill" it to shut it down. Chording (Ctrl+Q) with the keyboard while the Skype window is in focus doesn't work either. If one attempts to click on the launcher in the Applications Menu to bring up the GUI, it fails, because it detects the previous instance of Skype running. One must be very careful to only shut Skype down with the Quit command in its drop-down menu only. This is not user-friendly at all. It's the only Linux program of which I know that has this nasty behavior.
vannaraptus commented Tuesday, Apr 12
In my Squeeze+KDE 64bit, webcam (Creative VF0350) only works if started with the command:
LD_PRELOAD = / usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
The audio is better than 2.1 and the fonts are more readable.

Ehh... Even don't know, are here any reason to ask to make support of OpenIndiana/OpenSolaris OSs
Dear Skype Developers, you have to spread list of supported OSs or change the strategy
You can miss a big market of Oracle Enterprise users that want to pay and use Skype.
Marco Cimmino commented Thursday, Apr 14
@global.talker
First of all skype-wrapper is not installed by us, but by some random packages you found somewhere else in the past, probably mediubuntu?
So not our fault.
Secondly Skype does not close clicking on X and the process does NOT become a zombie, you just did NOT close it, but minimized.
If you do not know any other program that does like that means you are pretty new to Linux, I know dozens like:
- Amarok and Kopete are one of these from KDE world
- Pidgin I am sure is the same from GNOME world

With the current increase in Linux usage I hope we will see more frequent updates. While most of the windows "extras" are fluff to my mind, I could really do with a "snapshot" button, and having the Chat and video together in one window would also be useful.

I have this to say to everyone that is complaining.
If you don't like it, go back to Windows. Quit being sniveling crybabies. Programmers, and troubleshooters have a thankless job. With the negative responses I have seen in this thread, I wouldn't be surprised if you don't see Skype 3.0 for about 5 years. Look at your system settings, and make sure all is OK there, before you insist that is the software. You don't like "beta"? Wait for a "stable" release. You know what they say about a few bad apples spoiling the bunch. Keep it up, and I'll bet the shut down Skype for Linux development for good. Look, It's a free program, that runs on a free operating system. Seriously, quit your bitching.

Bugreport: screen sharing with GNOME compositing enabled results in a darker screen being shared, as if obscured by a semi-transparent window.
Note: I'm _not_ talking about Compiz or xcompmgr, but about the bare-bones GNOME feature, set via
gconftool-2 -s '/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager' --type bool true
System: Ubuntu 10.10 x86, GNOME 2.32, Skype 2.2
Apart from that, great release! Cool to see things moving; I hope more is in the pipe...
ogehrke commented Thursday, May 5
@brian.snapp: Waiting for a stable release would be more fun if there _was_ a stable release available. If you spent two minutes looking around, you'd notice that no stable release has been available for download for a year and a half now. And no, skype crashing whenever a chat window opens or the webcam not working (even if it works in any other software) is not a problem with "system settings". And bug reports are not bitching. Get rid of that attitude, it's arrogant.

One important News and One Question: Microsoft is buying Skype! What is the Future of Skype Linux? Is it the Death of the Skype Open Source Idea? Please tell us something about that!
Ok, I understand: You can't write a stable program in X years (Skype Linux is a joke as a developer-team. Don't be insulted, compare yourself to the others...) You could at least break your chains (just before you will be fired by Microsoft!) and tell us whats going on...Please!
deadlyellowsnow commented Tuesday, May 10
Wow, Redmond is now in charge. Will that speed up the Skype 4 Linux development? MMmm.
lavoleous commented Tuesday, May 10
Hi there. So, what's the word on how Skype for Linux will be developed now that Microsoft are going to be in control?
As it is I'm still on 2.1.0.81 as anything more recent doesn't work on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.
markwege commented Tuesday, May 10
Would be nice, if you released a stable version before Remond takes over. The current beta is not satisfying. There are some advantages over 2.1 concerning general sound and video quality. But there are also draw backs: Skype seems to have problems with staying online for a long time. After a while (may be, not sure, due to broken network connections in the meantime) it pretents to be connected, althought it is not. Reconnecting does not work, the only thing which brings Skype back online then is killing the skype process and a new start. Further more the video is jumping a little around with the zoom. Also the general camera angle which is shown seems to differ from the last beta. I would be nice if zoom and camera angle could be configured like in the Windows version. I also would like to see contact import like in the windows version from Facebook and csv-files.
kokonoula commented Tuesday, May 10

Skype, I just don't get it. You offer a great service, that I am willing to spend considerable amounts of money for: calling my friends on their mobiles, landlines, writing SMS. You are my phone provider, so to say. Using your software is not part of that service, just like I am not obliged to use my internet providers software or e-mail account. You will still get paid if I use Pidgin to make my calls (which I do, but parallely run Skype crashes at least once a week). What exactly keeps you from publishing an API or libskype, you are LOSING CUSTOMERS HERE! Please, Skype, free your product.
oddie82 commented Wednesday, May 11
Ok, since MS acquired Skype, what do you think guys - how long will it now take for MS to release new linux version?... Oh wait - that's mutually exclusive...
Looks like EOT for me.
tryfonaration commented Wednesday, May 11
Ok people. After MS bought up Skype I think it is high time to seriously look for alternatives. Don't expect any new version for Linux, we are talking about MS here, a known, ruthless enemy.
uare.home2 commented Friday, May 13

alexkcyp commented Saturday, May 14
I believe MS will continue to support Skype for other OSes. Skype has good potential revenue and it would be suicidal to support only a MS version. Example...MS Office for Macs.

davidnruthie commented Tuesday, May 17

Skype 2.2 crashes all the time
i.e. it opens, I sent a few words on Chat, then the yellow !!! appears and the software stalls
It won't even quit! It does only when rebooting.
maybe on odd occasion do I get lucky and it stalls only after 5-10 minutes...
so I have to revert to Windows if I want an effective Spyke usage.
Huge deception at this end guys.
Interface should be like the windows version was before the 5.0...
a LibSkype as suggested above is a great idea... is it workable?

Happily using skype 2.2 on Ubuntu 10.10 - audio, video and IM all working well.
I agree with the comments above - I'd prefer the development effort to focus on improving audio, video and api before playing with the user interface.

Marco Cimmino commented Thursday, Jun 9
Yes and is already addressed for the next release.
In the meanwhile a workaround is to install webcam tool (like guvcview) and improve brightness.

Greetings. Thank you for skype on linux! I don't care alot about version numbers but i sure hope the next version will be a stable one so it will give confidence to users.
Also, a plugin for pidgin or epiphany sounds great! like facebook made for chat!
One feature that i like and i have not seen on linux is:
separate buttons for audio calls and video calls, like the skype on windows big green button "call with video". Also the contact list is more efficient on the windows version.
For whoever suggested that if we want windows features on linux we should just move to windows - BAD IDEA! - consider that: at home i use a free application running on a free o.s. (ubuntu) to make free or cheap calls - do you think i affort 100$ to buy windows to run the same free application for the calls?

Hi, my webcam stop working when i upgraded to the last vrsion of skype. I've been forced to downgrade to the 2.1 beta to keep it working.
Launching skype from a shell does not give any error or message. Is there any way to debbug this?
The webcam seems to make a try to start but goes of again

Belated thanks to Marco for your response re pavucontrol from May 26. It would be nice to control the channels explicitly from skype, but I guess that is a pulse-audio problem.
jack.guru commented Friday, Jul 29
The new version is completely horrible! It needs a lot of effort to create such a bad program. Crashes all the time, still uses qt3 sending files works sometimes, whenever skype decides to. Unfortunately there is no alternative to skype, so we *have* to use this so-called-program!
supercobrajet commented Friday, Aug 19
Seriously, who are u guys kidding ?
I've had several issues on brand new Motherboards where the Audio out works (although not great),
but the Audio In (Mic) either doesn't work at all, or, it works horribly, with constant "scratchy" sounds.
-adjusting "Capture" and mic levels make NO difference, as far as getting rid of this poor quality audio.
The new Audio hardware that the manufacturers' stick on all these different brand new Motherboards is just CRAP !
(most especially in Linux, but also, I have had the same "mic" poor quality issues in Windows as well ?!)
So I look in my old Parts boxes and I dust-off and old PCI sound card and stick it in:
Soundblaster card (circa , made in 1999), I picked it up out of a garbage can at work, last year.
smile
In alsa, it comes up as an Ensoniq AudioPCI; CS4297A
Anyway, now ALL my audio out/in/Mic levels work beautifully, not to mention, the sound quality is much more "clear", with no more scratchy Mic sounds. Skype works great now, ...
It has been over 12 Years !!! since that card was made, and Linux (actually moreso the Audio chip makers) STILL can't get this Audio thing right?
Sure, pulseaudio is a piece of "caca", we all know that now, no thanks to audio development "ego" discrepancies within Linux too, and yet,
Why can't all these "new" Audio controllers just simply WORK in Linux !!!???
I don't get it ?, especially today.
Sure, for well over $200.00 I can switch to an M-Audio , but for gawd-sakes, it's just Audio.
There must be some Linux Audio/OpenHardware Development project going on somewhere that could easily build an Audio-PCI card, ...
I mean, it's not like there wouldn't be a Linux world market today for such a thing.
It would sell like hotcakes, and then finally, audio issues in Linux would become a thing of the past.
Everyone I know uses Linux on their desktops. And they/like me have the same age-old "audio" complaints, as I'm sure many of you do as well.
thx for listening, smile
Rick.

why not bring skype for linux up to the pace of that of windows or mac?
jde1991 commented Monday, Oct 3
I've been using the Skype client for windows sense some ware around 2007. Ended up getting a mac last year. And before anyone tells me that this is the Linux section, I know that and have a method to my madness. Me, who doesn't use Linux, but has a friend who does, even thinks it's sending the wrong kind of message to your user base. You want to keep users? Well, and especially you Marco, respect your users. Let them know you care. Let them know in more than just idle words, that you haven't given up on them. Let them know, that all is not lost, because from ware I and about a million other people sit, it's close. If that's too much to ask from you Marco, you might want to try and find another job, but good luck, I don't know of a workplace for assholes.
jde1991 commented Monday, Oct 3
Seeing as I forgot to do this when submitting the first comment, here's what I'm talking about. Let's look at one of the comments above mine, shall we? I believe it when something like this. "I haven't even seen a response from the Devs about the lack of rapid forward movement on it. Almost everyone here complained Skype so why not listen. Linux Has millions of users per distro. That's not enough for you to want to make a bigger effort towards it? I have primarily Linux machines at home (Ubuntu) and it wouldbe nice to see you guys actually take into consideration all these people here." Now, let's take a look at the response given. I believe it was as follows. "Development continues, dot. About the "million of users", I think we know how many users we have per platform so we don't need you to tell us." If you claim to know how many users you have, then firstly, why not actually respond in a manner befitting someone who doesn't want to be looked at as an asshole? Secondly, why is Linux support lacking so badly? As other comments on this post state, people are more than willing to pay for Skype's services, and would be willing to help with the development as well. You know, speaking of paying for Skype's services, ware does all that money even go. Please tell me it goes toward development of Skype, and not development of Microsoft's pockets ? They're big enough, especially as it's been said that they make more with stemming profits from android phone sails then windows phone 7, but that's another comment for another blog. Marco, I did call you an asshole, and I would be willing to take that back, if you weren't so arrogant in your response, and Skype starts proving it's self to the users of these more than capable OS distributions
, those distributions being all distributions of Linux.
bryhoyt commented Monday, Oct 3
Hi Marco,
Thanks for your responses to our comments, very helpful.
A bunch of us over here at the forum are experiencing a rather tricky issue with Skype silently stopping to work on 11.04. The tricky part of it is that there is no visible sign that it's not working -- it appears to be online, fully green, etc. but in actual fact, nobody else can see you online or chat with you, and as soon as you try to send someone a chat message, it won't go through -- you'll get an orange exclamation mark.
The only way to fix it is to kill Skype with "kill -9" (it simply won't die otherwise), but of course you need to know that it's broken first, and unfortunately there's no way to tell until you send someone a message.
None of the Skype For Linux developers has responded on the forum with any suggestions; could you please have a look and see if you can suggest anything?
1. Is there a place to post bug reports like this to the Skype developers?
2. Is there a better way to get feedback from the Skype developers? Many of us are experiencing great frustration because there is so little feedback. I understand it's difficult to keep everyone happy, but is there some way we could get more frequent information?
We love Skype, but we'd also love to be able to interact more with the Skype For Linux developers.
guywoodhouse commented Thursday, Oct 6
It's evident, I think, the poor attention to the Linux world. I don't believe that Marco or some developer is the real problem. Maybe the company does not invest money on Linux development. If this message will reach someone in the top of company, please remember a key factor (only one of many factors, of course) for the success of Google:
http://www.google.com/linuxrepositories
So, while Skype does not change his policy, stop to use Skype, start to use Google Voice. This is my little advice...
Yours,
Samuel

Thanks for the Linux version! It is actually pretty usable and bug free, but one thing...it is sooooo uglyyyyyyy XD
I really got used to the default view of the Windows version and this can be easily implemented in the Linux version, so I am hoping for that.
Since I use Skype every day it is a reason for me not to use Ubuntu as much as I would want to because all those open chats are pretty annoying. So, please add the default view to the Linux version
Thanks
tprender commented Sunday, Oct 16
Maybe I'm being cynical but I can't see why Microsoft would want the Linux Skype GUI to be as good as the Windows version. I believe it is a deliberate policy to put people off using Linux. I have a version of Skype on an old Nokia N95 which is better than the piece of crap they give us for Linux. If theyereally cared they would make it open source so it could be knocked into shape by people who know what they are doing.

Same here! Happens couple times a week. Maybe it's because of PAE kernel, not sure.

When I try to install the deb package it requires 32 libs, so it is NOT a 64 bit version.
Why developers don't develop a real 64 bit version?

Linux Support sucks and you guys did not manage it in years to make it better. There was a working version for a short time, but since Ubuntu 11.04, Skype is broken and due your year-long update schedule it is now broken for another year. Yesterday I had to restart Ubuntu three times to start Skype without breaking my system.
I am a Skype customer for years and have probably spent hundreds of Euros on calls. It is an unbearable situation that Skype does not have a regular update schedule for Linux. Ironic, that we can only hope this will get better with Microsoft.

"Microsoft" creates software for linux. It's a thing! I don't expect versions like 5.xx very soon. It's a good work and I thank you for that. But remeber, we (linux users) need yours services, you need us as users, customers, etc. Simple like that. It's clear that we have alternatives, but some of us still loves Skype...
severin_kempf commented Friday, Nov 11
We have been using Skype for several years. We have a subscription and use it both on Windows and Linux (I personally use it on Linux exclusively). Although there are some differences, I just want to express appreciation that there *is* a Linux version and it works, which is more than can be said for most other commercial software. I'm sure the development resources are commensurate with the size of the community and again, really appreciate that I can run this on my laptop with Linux. Thanks Marco, Raul, Berkus, and everyone else that works on this version.

Out of the sudden since a few days my Skype stops working under the hood. I only recognize this when I send messages and I see the yellow warning sign a few seconds in front of my messages. Though it is still responding quitting doesn't work and I need to kill it. Since it hasn't been updated for ages, was there a change on the servers?

Hello Skype team,
Can you just let us know what are the plans for the future of Skype under Linux ?
Is the development still going on?
mozzy_mozbourne commented Monday, Jan 9
Yes a road map would be nice. Skype for linux has been in beta for ages and is still lacking a humongous amount of features available on other platforms. It is ancient
Also better integration into Gnome-shell would be nice. Currently I am using skype over empathy with a plugin, which is an ugly workaround but it works so far.
ohyonghao commented Wednesday, Jan 11
Really, how long has "Beta" 2.2 been out? How long has Windows had version 5? Get real, are you in Linux for the long haul or just going leave this 2.2 here to say hey, look, we support Linux. Haven't even seen any updates to the 2.2 Beta.
Please take Linux seriously.
gymnasiast90 commented Thursday, Jan 12
Windows users get small updates every 2-3 months. Linux users get small updates every 15 months. That by itself is bad, but would be more or less acceptable if at least the bugs were fixed! But the amount of things not working or not working properly is going up! Skype doesn't work with webcam out of the box on Ubuntu 10.04, let alone on 11.10.
Come on, I know Microsoft doesn't like Linux, but surely there are enough paying Linux customers to justify developing it a little bit faster. Even if we had only two releases a year which primarily solved the bugs and occasionally introduced a new feature I think most Linux users would be very happy.
And to make my post not entirely negative, the Linux version has some good points. It's simple, easy to use, has no advertisements (for subscriptions and things like that), can show ALL chat history and has no juvenile things like the massive first use screen and the 'Your Video Is Working' box. To me, it feels efficient and grown-up.
So, in short, please fix the bugs and fix them faster.

I have allways had problem to make webcam work in skype for Linux. But webcam does work well in other videoprograms like cheese. I have googled this issue and have seen that there are lot of people having similar problem. There are all kind of ways how people have fixed that. I have tried lot of thouse fixes but not worked for me except one, when I was useing Zorin Os 5. Unfortunately for me I changed to Lubuntu because my computer is getting old :/ and the fix I used in ZorinOs does not work there. So now I'm on starting point again, finding a way to fix this.

Skype seems to freeze and sending it SIGTERM does not close the application either. A stronger SIGKILL needs to be used followed by the re-opening of the program which is quite annoying. I am using Debain 7 (Wheezy) which has been stable otherwise.

Lovely. Nearly 1 year since last post and probably as long since the last update. That's the way the Skype promises about Linux support turn out in reality. And I guess as now Micro$oft bought it we will wait forever, until the obsolete Linux version will become completely incompatible with newer versions on other platforms, especially the only right one. Time to look for some SIP app instead.

I tried your new Ferora 64 package on Fedora 15. I was a bit disappointed to see that is actually with 32-bit binary, and with 32-bit dependencies.
I was extremely disappointed to notice that the behaviour described by ab1197590, which was present in the 32-bit rpm of 2.2 beta, persists in the new package.
When I started skype, it nearly froze all my desktop, chased out everything in the swap, crashed a couple of Firefox addons, and I had to struggle to get access to a console to kill it, which I had to do with KILL instead of TERM.
I am really starting to seek alternatives of Skype, although Skype was working quite well before 2.1.
