#SkypeTips: calls and send SMS from your Mac Address Book using Skype

If you are using Mac Address Book and the contact has multiple phone numbers, we would like to share a tip on making calls and sending SMS directly from Mac Address Book using Skype.

1. Open Mac Address Book
2. Click contact's phone number (e.g. mobile, work, home)
3. Select "Call with Skype" or "Send SMS with Skype"
4. Skype will then automatically launched and be ready for your confirmation on call or SMS

Facebook connect

Similar to Skype for Windows 5.5, Skype now provides Facebook connection capability to Mac users. You can now view read and update your newsfeed or make comments directly from Skype Home. You can also update Skype mood message to your Facebook.

Facebook chat

You can view your Facebook friends' online status from Facebook tag in the contacts window and chat with them directly from Skype.

Skype Home

Skype Home is a new area in Skype which provides relevant updates for you, including your friends' mood message and Facebook newsfeed.

Improved video quality

We have made improvement in video that solves video related technical and performance issues. It also allows users to have multiple video feeds at once that users can have video call with video preference opened.

Minor bug fixes

We also fixed issues reported from end users over the last few months. Thank you for providing us valuable feedbacks.

You can find your most active conversations more easily under Recents in the sidebar by moving less active ones to History section.

Support for Mac's built-in HD and Logitech's B910 HD cameras
Both incoming and outgoing HD are supported for those two cameras.

We have just released a hotfix to Skype 5.1 for Mac, with this hotfix we are resolving a startup crash for people who were affected by yesterdays Skype issues, for more info go to our Heartbeat site.

About the Skype for Mac Flash video bug

Some of you have reported an incompatibility between the current version of Skype for Mac and the Adobe Flash plugin, which prevented you from using your webcam with Flash.

We mistakenly identified this as occurring ‘by design’ – which was incorrect, and we apologise for the confusion caused.

The incompatibility is indeed a bug. We’ve identified the cause, and are working on a fix. We hope to release an update to Skype for Mac soon which should resolve the problem.

Skype 5.0 Gold for Mac

We released Skype 5.0 Gold for Mac. We would like to thank all of you for providing an extensive amount of feedback to us during the beta period. We have incorporated many items from the feedback raised in this 'gold' release. In addition we would like to make a big bow in front of our Closed Beta testers and localizer community, for the huge contributions made during the entire development period.

With the release of Skype 5.0 for Mac, we have made following improvements:

Resizing UI

Sidebar shrinks as the window gets smaller when the content area is at its minimum size. It remembers the last position the user dragged it to and will grow back to this position.

Sidebar collapses when the window is too small to show it and un-collapses when it gets large enough again.

Full Screen video calling

Users can activate full screen video calls either on 1:1 or Group Video calls.

Improved visibility in of 'Dial pad' and 'Add Contacts'

We have increased the visibility of 'Dial pad' by moving it to title bar, and improved 'Add Contacts' functionality during calls and conversations.

We have just released an updated version of Skype 2.8 for Mac.

With this update, we resolved the issue found in the last release of Skype 2.8 for Mac, 2.8.0.683, so that Skype no longer crashes when using Skype Access.

Skype 5.0 Beta for Mac

We are happy to announce a brand new version of Skype for our Mac users.

The new version of Skype brings a new user experience and many new features.

New user interface

The overhauled experience keeps you in contact with all people close to you, whether in business or privately. Skype 5.0 for Mac unifies all your phone, SMS, video, and chat communication, one-to-one or with multiple people.

Group Video Calling

Group video calling enabled a groups of up to 10 participants to meet each other over video. It's a good way for separated families to talk with each other or to host a business meetings from various offices. Group video calling requires a modern computer with a fast internet connection. For best quality (VGA quality) 10-way group video call all the participants will need about 5 megabits symmetrical bandwidth and a computer powered by Intel core i5 or i7 processor. You can make a call with slightly lower quality with less powerful machines. The system requirements are lower for fewer participants.

Improved experience during network-compromised calls

We have improved your experience on calls when you or the other side of the call is experiencing network glitches. In these cases Skype will try to either find a better relays for the call, or, if not possible, to re-connect the call for you automatically.

Offline Instant Messaging

Now you are able to send and receive messages from your buddies when they're offline. The message will be delivered straight after the receiving party logs into Skype, no matter if the sender is online or not. This feature works only for contacts where both sides are on version which supports Offline IM, e.g. either on Mac or Windows 5.0 releases.

Also the level of hum decreases if the user touches the laptop.
Skype Access	When a user has selected to extend Skype Access, the menu shows "Start Skype Access" instead of the expected "Stop Skype Access" as an option. *NB\!* Selecting _Start Skype Access_ functions correctly in this scenario to turn off Skype Access if selected; however the wrong copy is displayed.	To stop Skype Access, the user is advised to select Start Skype Access which will in fact end the session or go to Skype>Quit Skype which will force the session to end.

We have just released a hotfix to Skype 2.8 for Mac which resolves the login problems.

Some of you may be experiencing login issues with Skype 2.8 for Mac.

We are working hard to resolve this issue quickly. We will post further updates here until the issue has been resolved.

Affected are users who have either just installed Skype 2.8 for Mac on their computers for first time or have deleted the Skype preferences folder located at ~/Library/Application Support/Skype.

If you are an affected user, then you will likely experience a very slow first login to Skype, or Skype login may fail with an error message about "login timeout" or "internet connection issue".

The issue should not impact existing Mac users who have recently logged into Skype, only new users who have just downloaded Skype 2.8 for Mac for the first time or who have deleted the above mentioned folder.
