Skype 2.0 for Android: Say hello to video calling

Today we have released a Skype 2.0 for Android, introducing Skype video calling to the Android Market.

The main improvements over the previous version of Skype in the Skype 2.0 for Android are:

  • Video calling
  • Ability to send SMS messages
  • User experience improvements
Install the new Skype experience now via the Android Market. You're welcomed to discuss how you like this new version on Skype Support Network. We're keen to hear youre feedback.

A bit more details on the improvements of Skype:

Video calling

We have introduced a video calling support on the new Skype for Android. This enables you to see youre beloved ones while on go. You can make video calls over mobile data and Wifi connections.

We are currently supporting video calling on four devices, but we are actively working on adding support for more devices.

The currently supported devices are:

  • Google Nexus S
  • HTC Desire S
  • Sony Ericsson Xperia neo
  • Sony Ericsson Xperia pro
Ability to send SMS messages

We have introduced in Skype 2.0 a possibility to send SMS messages, so now you can conveniently send your messages from Skype while you're on the go on our competitive rates.

User Experience improvements

When building the Skype 2.0 for Android we made big efforts to iron out the few quirks we had on the initial version and we made a number of changes to the user experience based on your feedback to the initial version of Skype for Android.

The technical bits for this release.

System requirements

Skype 2.0 for Android is designed to run on the devices which run on Android OS 2.1 or newer, with at least 600 MHz of CPU power and with screen resolutions of 320*240; 240*400; 480*320; 800*480; 854*480.

Skype will also work on devices which have different screen resolution or slower CPU's, but the performance will be degraded, especially on calls.

Known issues

As with any software this version of Skype has in few known issues, please be aware of them while using it:

Devices affected Category Description Current solution
All Birthday notifications Birthday notifications are shown only after user logs in and not during long running session User has to log out and in again to receive birthday notifications
All Calling Usage of Bluetooth headsets is not supported for Skype calls. They might work depending on device. None available
All Calling Call drops when 2G/3G changes back to wifi: In case user has enabled Wi-Fi and 2G/3G connection and receives Skype call while on 2G/3G connection, call drops if device changes connection back to Wi-Fi None available
All Calling Call quality depends on the signal strength of Wi-Fi connection and the bandwidth of 3G connection In case call quality is not optimal, make sure you have good network connection
All Calling If Skype is not running and the user initiates a call from native address book even though there is no available data connection. The application falsely thinks it's gone online. None available
All Calling Video calling to the iPad 1 that is using the Skype for iPhone app is currently not working; the call automatically gets downgraded to an audio call. none available
All Calling During an ongoing call, it is not possible to change in call volume while proximity sensor is activated. Move phone away from head to deactivate proximity sensor, then change the call volume.
All Generic When upgrading Skype then the previous history on the device will be lost None available
All Generic Skype is auto-starting after sign-out / force close Skype is a "search provider" type of application. As a consequence of this, the default behavior of the Android platform is to try to restart the application if it crashes or the user does a force close. Skype does not auto-start itself after signing out of Skype.
All Generic On very rare occasions upgrading to a new version of Skype for Android fails and the user is no longer able to upgrade/re-install Skype for Android. After a master reset of the device Skype for Android can be installed again.
All Generic On some devices, radio music is not stopped automatically when Skype call comes in. Call can be received, but when answering the call, radio music is still played along with Skype call sound. User has to stop radio manually.
All Generic When used with large accounts and Wi-Fi goes into hibernation mode. The application can sometimes get into a state where it is not able to go back online. Go to app manager and kill client, restart the client
All Generic With very large accounts (600\+ contacts) the performance of the application will not be optimal.
All Instant messaging On some occasions the chat messages may appear in wrong order None available.
All Voicemail User cannot leave voicemail -- although calls get directed to voicemail and user hears voicemail greeting, voicemails are not saved and sent to remote party None available
HTC Thunderbolt Calling Device's audio quality is generally poor (fuzzy, choppy, delayed) None available
Motorola Milestone 2.0;
Motorola Milestone 2.1;
Motorola Milestone XT720 2.1
Calling In case user receives incoming GSM call during Skype call, it may happen that audio is not sent/received during GSM call. None available

Samsung Galaxy S Mesmerize;
Samsung Galaxy S Epic 4G;
Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant;
Samsung Galaxy S Captivate;

Samsung Galaxy Spica I5700 2.1;
HTC Legend 2.1
Connection Connection is not seamless for these devices. When user has enabled both WiFi and 2G/3G connection, after a while, device switches to 2G/3G, but for other contacts, user appears to be offline as there really isn't no connection in the device None available
Samsung Galaxy Spica I5700 2.1;
LG Aloha 2.1;
HTC Wildfire;
HTC Legend
Generic Altough these phone models fulfill the criteria's to be compatible for Skype 2.0 for Android, but the application performance may not be optimal. None available

Hi Devs,

Thanks for a great app, so useful. Really grateful for that. New update looks good and I can see some improvements already. Cheers.
One thing though, Sign in automatically does not work. Each time I sign out, I have to re enter my password. Any ideas what I can do to fix this?

Kind regards,
K

stewartrogers-ioutput commented Thursday, Jun 30

Please add Motorola Xoom and other Honeycomb devices as soon as you can. And please, please, please add support for Bluetooth headsets for Android tablets too. Thanks.

lauri.andler commented Thursday, Jun 30

Why isn't video calling supported on Samsung Galaxy S with 2.3.4 when it's supported on Nexus S? They are almost identical devices?

csaba.hereb commented Thursday, Jun 30

On the Motorola Atrix the app works, but the status icon starts rolling around after a while saying "reconnecting", although the connection is fine. Very annoying!

navossoc commented Thursday, Jun 30

@stewartrogers-ioutput
It works on Xoom, but, I didn't get it on the android market, but no video calls yet.
The landscape mode is 100% better on Xoom...

boodz.23 commented Thursday, Jun 30

when the video call will be available for Galaxy S2 ??

rdeal12 commented Thursday, Jun 30

what have you removed the option to change the incoming call ring tone?and it would be nice if i could answer a skype call with my headset

andrew.becherer commented Friday, Jul 1

Hi Devs,

Thanks for the exciting release but I am afraid the Nexus S is not fully supported. I am using the white Nexus S that supports AT&T Wireless' AWS spectrum (model i9020a) running the official Google Android release 2.3.4. Video calling is not available on this device. It was a pretty big let down. When can we expect video support for all Nexus S devices?

jose_morales_ariza commented Friday, Jul 1

With the last update, Skype doesn't detect my phone microphone. Nobody can listen me.

dkasak commented Friday, Jul 1

Why no push notifications? With Windows Mobile 6.5 support being pulled quite a while ago, I would have expected more features going into the Android and iPhone clients. And let's not talk about the monstrosity that is the Linux client.

kaguyasudo commented Friday, Jul 1

The microphone on my X8 doesn't seem to work. Tested with Echo123 as well, the same result. It used to work well with older versions. Please fix this problem asap so that I can talk, not just "chat"!!

domaccount commented Friday, Jul 1

It seems this update broke the dial-pad notes while in a call. Though I hear the DTMF sounds in my headset, the remote end (conference call, voice mail, etc) cannot. Please fix this.

uschmidtmann commented Friday, Jul 1

Just restored the 1.x version on my Galaxy Tab.
Reasons / Problems with 2.0.0.45 from Market:
- Autologin does not work anymore
- Can't get rid of the annoying login/logon sound (why does everybody have to hear me starting skype?)
- changing screens with the tabs was much faster than going through the main screen (my personal opionion, but typical: more colour, less functionality - sorry)

balint.krizsan commented Friday, Jul 1

I was hoping for the fix of the LG Optimus One (P500) problems. In the last version at least there was a button to turn the back speaker off - but it did not work. But with the new version it is still not possible to switch to the ear piece speaker. Could you please fix this?

woicex8 commented Friday, Jul 1

Same problem as kaguyasudo:

The microphone on Xperia X8 does not work.

Skype(X8) --> Skype(PC): PC has silence in the speaker

Skype(x8) --> landline: landline has silence in the speaker (Skype out)

Skype(X8) --> Echo123 nothing recorded, "beep -- beep" shortly after another

On the same Xperia X8 normal GSM calls and calls from a SIP VoIP client work fine,

so the microphone itself is functioning well.

Skype was working perfectly fine in version 1.x.

Current (faulty) Skype version: 2.0.0.47

Can you please fix this fault?

Thanks!

mike.slater commented Wednesday, Jul 6

Nexus-S: Works well with far fewer drop-outs. Video seems to work well (others can see me fine) although I haven't tried it 'two-way' yet.

Why has the ability to change the ringtone gone?????

The default ringtone is useless and I'm missing calls!!. PLEASE put the ability to change the ringtone back.

Many thanks for a great app.

hrammer65 commented Monday, Jun 20

Have you people gone completely insane with this fbook cr*p? I mean, now its not only in the Home tab, no no no, now it's between the Contacts tab and Recent. So basically I guess you think that fbook is SO darn important that it should be everywhere.
And of course there is absolutely no way to turn fbook integration off, of course not.

You know what, the ONLY thing skype has going for it, is the fact that it's more or less mainstream, but belive you me people WILL start switching every which way, and actually, they already are leaving for google voice and other alternatives. Skype was good back in the day, it was small, fast and most importantly it did not violate people's privacy.

al...bri commented Monday, Jun 20

Amazing.... installed it on Windows 7 x64 now it won't load anymore... welcome to microsoft !

g4pilut commented Monday, Jun 20

My first impressions of beta 5.5.0.110:

I'm not going to comment on the yet again major UI changes, except to say they will take some getting used to.

The good

Video quality is definitely better...at least when the VP80 codec is in use.

In High Definition audio frame rate is MUCH better. I'm using a Logitech C910 webcam. With version 5.3 my fps was very poor when I was in HD. With the beta version I'm getting 1280x720 @ 30 fps. I used to have serious video lag compared to audio. With the beta version video and audio sync properly.

Group calls - good quality

Screen sharing quality is very good. Better than with previous versions.

Facebook - I don't use it and have no interest but at least the integration is easy to ignore if that's your choice.

The not-so-good

The beta version seems prone to crashing when the incoming video switches from SD to HD. In several cases, on different users' PC's, it actually caused a Windows BSOD. Other cases just Skype itself crashed. It all cases the crash followed switching from SD to HD.

I've seen a video call start with the VP71 codec and others using VP80. I haven't figured out what circumstances causes which codec to be used.

CPU use seems significantly higher than with the previous versions. This may be an issue for users with less-than-high power PC's.

The "Internet Connection Problem -trying to get your call back" feature doesn't work. It never did and still doesn't. If a call drops you still have to manually end the call and manually start it over again (which I prefer anyway).

A video call starts in "Zoom In" mode. You can manually change it to Zoom Out once a call is started but there's no option to default to Zoom Out.

You can no longer turn off your PIP. Most of the time this isn't an issue but I'd still prefer the option.

That's my 2 cents worth after a few hours playing around with beta 5.5.0.110.

Good job, great job! :) Just want to add that there is a slight confusion with customers. If you can put a sign up on facebook user name in the "Latest" and also scored when someone is fit to be seen whether this entry is on skype or facebook. Sorry for my bad English

..the circle of the joke I hope in version 5.10 can be integrated and msn:))

Does not matter if in compatibility mode or not, GUI and commands of skype 5.3 crash with all SIS graphics. I have reinstalled 5.1 Many other people did the same. Fix this bug, please

mtazulsemfiltro commented Tuesday, Jun 28

Please let us use command line "-cleanhistory" or any other solution to remove all traces of recent activity, to protect users privacy...faster than going to "options" menu...

kkahrs commented Wednesday, Jun 29

For a couple of months I have been a bit frustrated that I am not able to run Skype in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3 in different versions of Windows 7. I want to use compatibility mode because it is the only way I know where I am able to minimize Skype to the taskbar. It is quite annoying when the Skype window does not want to close when Skype is running. Skype 5.5 beta for Windows could be useful for Facebook chats, but I was a bit disappointed when I saw this reply:

Skype will crash on startup if user has set it to run under compatibility mode on Windows Vista or 7. Workaround: Please do not start Skype under compatibility mode.

Is there another way I can make Skype minimize completely to the taskbar without using compatibility mode? Or can you find a workaround so that compatibility mode can work?

When it comes to the Facebook chat integration, but I agree with the points raised in the known issues. Currently I use ICQ because of the FB chat integration, but I want to switch to Skype 5.5 it it works satisfactory. However, as you write in your known issues, it's hard to distinguish Facebook and Skype contacts. Facebook users need a FB logo and a different sound when FB contacts are chatting with me.

ananda96 commented Thursday, Jun 30

Please give Users a CHANCE to disable or REMOVE Facebook Stuff!

Not everybody likes this, not everything MUST be integrated!

mikewolf051 commented Friday, Jul 1

I like the new login interface, but i run into a problem when I want to use my C910, I can't seem to activate the HD video mode even though I was able to do so in 5.3. Both computers have the same camera and hardware and are on the same network. I want to see the high quality indicator brought back. You know whats wierd is after i was having crashing issues with the beta and went back to 5.3 the high quality indicator which i had never been able to get working with 5.3 actually would now appear when it was suppose to. Anyway I'd love to see the zoom in and zoom out function done away with and it set to automatically be set to zoom out. It's irritating to have to constantly zoom out during each video call. Another feature everyone wants to see is free group video chatting instead if it being a paid feature. It's about time guys. You made your money now get on with the free.

muzenda29 commented Saturday, Jul 2

I am not very tech savy, however everytime I try to install skype on my PC which has windows 7, it tells me the programme will harm my computer and surely once I start using skype my pc crushes...can you do something to rectify this

i agree completely with hrammer65 comment, he expresses what i felt about Facebook, plz remove Facebook Stuff, i am actually emigrated to Google voice, it is very good, reliable, simple, and u get every thing in one place.

shaunconlan commented Wednesday, Jul 6

I have not upgraded to this yet. If I am forced to and cannot run it under compatibility mode, I WILL BE UNINSTALLING. No I don't want skype taking up my task bar. No I don't want face book rubbish. Fix your shit.

P.S. Goggle voice is starting to look good.

sergiu.ene commented Thursday, Jul 7

i'm too agree with irasmy and hrammer65. pls make an option to remove facebook integration, or at least to hide the tab with facebook. btw this option is not working with clients connected using http proxy - facebook tab get's never connected. (i have a facebook acc, but i use it very rare)

cornelius_young commented Thursday, Jul 7

1. may I know which port does Skype use to connect to facebook? Seems like my ISP doesn't allow skype to connect to facebook, but when in other place with other ISP, facebook chat on skype is working great.
2. Try to add an option to turn off facebook on skype, this is for those who does not need it.
3. why should there be skype home appearing when we start skype 5.5? Please remove the skype home thingy.

warp.master commented Saturday, Jul 9

er can we have the volume control back the only way right now is via the check settings
also i miss the snapshot button, also does the snapshot lib have to hang everything while it loads every picture i keep having to clear the directory out to improve snapshot feature

other than that its great here

ak_irk commented Sunday, Jul 10

Skype will loose me as a use if there will be no options to:
- hide Facebook stuff
- disable absolutely annoying SkypeHome window upon start up!!! It's SOOOO annoying, that nothing else in the universe!

Come on guys, is it so difficult to implement those tiny options that can give you so many benefits in terms of users love when they can tune the app to their needs?!

Skype 5.3 for Windows update - Removed Skype Extras Manager

We have updated Skype 5.3 for Windows.

With this newly released build we have removed the Extras Manager from Skype and in addition we have made some stability improvements.

Please upgrade your Skype now.

Skype Extras Manager provided access to a number of third party applications like games, fax and call recorders. We stopped the development of Skype Extras on September 2009, because there were only a small number of people using the third party applications through Extras Manager, the next logical step was to remove it from our Windows client.

For those of you interested in continuing to use applications from Skype Extras Manager you can go to visit theSkype Shop, to download an older version of Skype for Windows.

In case you come across any issues while using Skype, then please let us know about it, either by discussing on our forums or by reporting the issue on our public issue tracker.

ttom34 commented Friday, Jun 24

Sorry, but I don´t think that this is a good way, to remove the extras-manager completely from the application, even if the support for it was stopped, so the people who use this (like me and many others), can´t update the application anymore, without loosing the nice features of the extras-manager (they have to install crapy soft instead, what was ranged as unserious-software - is this the new way of microsoft, to get most profit of it ?)
So please think about of all that users who like that soft very much - the removing of the extras-manager was a big fault :(

ezwan_corluka commented Thursday, Jun 30

annaliese1970 commented Friday, Jul 1

I agree with ttom34. This is an extremely poor way to keep your clients using your product. With so much competition on the rise for free calling, you should be ADDING, not REMOVING features!

vgrabchuk commented Saturday, Jul 2

"Good job"

Now skype4com.dll is not working, and it looks like this is because of removed Extras manager

alex.v.sokoloff commented Sunday, Jul 3

This shows again that Skype Team don't really care about users. Among Skype Extras there were good applications which provided some really useful functionality absent in Skype, e.g. call recording, notifications for particular contacts, interactive whiteboards etc. They removed the Extras Manager, but didn't offer anything in return - they are not actually expanding Skype functionality. Suggestions about some much needed features have been on Skype forums for years. Now they have just abandoned all those forums (the Skype Community) and created a new Support Network - a nice trick, isn't it?

I think if they keep on neglecting real needs of their users they risk losing some of them. Alternative applications like Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Pidgin or Google Talk are ready to embrace new users :-)

muskratjohn3 commented Tuesday, Jul 5

The removal of this software will greatly impact usage of skype. Thousands of military servicemen and women use these applications to stay closer in touch with their children while they are deployed around the globe. Removing this is foul, to one of skype's largest user markets.

ufobmx commented Tuesday, Jul 5

I am now leaving Skype , The Forums is Out of Order and now this, Goodbye Skype.

bennyvig commented Tuesday, Jul 5

Really really CRAZY for Skype to have allowed this situation to have developed. Extras was a brilliant component of Skype ....... skype management should be pushing the envelope and making Skype better all round - NOT REMOVING valuable functionality !!
Where is the logic of upsetting users - Skype is losing the incredible high goodwill it built up over years big time day by day now. Sort extras out please skype and get it back online and live ASAP.

scarvacif commented Wednesday, Jul 6

i am appauled at skypes decision to remove extras from its latest version, and when the opportunity arises for a good alternative communication tool with extras such as tic tac, i will be taking my auto renewal business elsewhere, and i encourage anybody else who pays skype to do the same...

Skype 2.2 beta for Linux update

We have released Skype 2.2 beta for Linux.

With this update we fixed the problem which affected sign in last week. We have also reduced Skype's CPU usage when making video calls.

Start downloading the new build now.

david.wells commented Sunday, Jun 19

Two issues with this release:

i) Running Fedora rpm 32bit build on Fedora 14 64 bit I see frequent instances when starting up skype where it connects but then thrashes the disk and consumes most of the cpu for a couple of minutes before crashing. Maybe 25% of the time when I start up after booting the OS I see this. Once it has crashed if I restart it seems to start OK. When it crashes I don't hear the skype login sound when it connects.

ii) The credit counter shows zero even though I have credit and if I log on to the website I can see I have credit.

If there is anyway I can collect additional information that will help you resolve these two issues just let me know.
