The Ten Deadly Sins of Mobile Video Calling - Sins 6-8: Experience

This is the second of three posts in my mini-series about mobile video calling. If you're new, you might like to take a look at the first post before diving in here.

Having already discussed some of the technical barriers to good mobile video experiences, in this post I cover some of the more fundamental experiential problems that can turn a great call into a terrible one.

Sin 6: Lighting

Good video requires good lighting. Bad lighting means a bad call - and it's really that simple.

Lighting is actually a problem for all video - not just mobile video. Very high end video conferencing systems will often include specifications for what colors the walls need to be in the room, and exactly what kind of lighting is needed and where in the room it needs to be placed. Sound extreme? Think about how movies are filmed and how important lighting is there.

Now think about Skype on your desktop or TV. If you're sitting in front of your computer in your home or office, there is typically some form of lighting that stays reasonably consistent throughout the call. Perhaps the lights are on in the room; or the sun is out and you are getting light through the windows. Nevertheless, you might end up being backlit, especially in rooms lit with direct sunlight. This has a negative effect on video calling.

Now, consider the case on a mobile device. Lighting is much more variable. You might be outside - it might be dark or dusk or in a place where no lighting is available. Or, it may be midday outside, with the sun overhead. Or, you might be backlit by the rising sun. In fact, the situation might change during a call.

If you're outside on your mobile phone, and you're backlit by the sun, and then you turn around - you're now front-lit. In other words, mobile video complicates lighting even further by introducing two new variables - one is movement, which can cause significant variation in lighting. The other is uncontrolled lighting, where you may be in situations where you can't turn lights on or off.

Some of this can be solved by lighting adjustments, often provided by the camera itself. But sometimes, lighting is just bad. And there's not much you can do about it.

Sin 7: Centering and shaking

In a mobile video call, for the other people to see you, you need to hold the phone at exactly the right distance from your face, and then hold it at exactly the right angle to capture you properly. Of course, the same problem exists in desktop or TV video calling. However, on the desktop - the PC or laptop is in a fixed position, usually on a desk, as is the camera. You're usually in a sitting position in a chair - or on a sofa in the case of TV.

On desktops, the camera can be adjusted so that it always captures your face as long as you're sitting in the chair at the normal distance from the camera. On a laptop, where the camera is embedded in the bezel of the display, the angle of the display can be adjusted to similar effect. In other words, the proper angle and distance of the camera to your face is maintained by a physical apparatus.

This is absolutely not the case for mobile video. In a mobile video call, you have to hold the mobile phone in your hand, and keep it at the correct distance. Maintaining this distance is not handled by a physical apparatus - it's maintained by your arm. This makes it difficult to do correctly, and requires continuous adjustment. Indeed, many mobile video calling applications give you a full-screen self-view while the call is ringing. This gives you a chance to 'prepare' and place the handset at the proper distance before the call. Nonetheless, people naturally move their arms and head during a call, and as a consequence, their face will often fall out of center, giving a poor experience for the person on the other side of the call.

too close.JPG

Indeed, the relatively small self-view, which is not the focus of the your attention during a call, is the only bit of feedback that you're getting something wrong, and without clear feedback, you often don't realizes that all the other person can see is the top of your head, or your ear.

Motion complicates things even further. In a typical laptop or desktop video call, you don't move very much during a call. However, in a mobile video call, you're much more often in motion. Indeed, people often tend to pace or move around while on mobile calls, so that moving around is the norm and not the exception. Motion will naturally cause the distance between the phone and the caller's face to change during the call, aggravating the problem.

Like lighting, this is an experience problem that is primarily not technical.

Sin 8: Discomfort

This problem is very much related to the video shaking and centering problem, but is slightly different.

It gets pretty uncomfortable holding a phone at a fixed distance from your face for an extended period of time. Give it a try - take your mobile phone, hold it out from your face, and keep it there for a minute; five minutes; ten minutes; thirty minutes - and figure out how long you can hold it in place before you just can't stand it anymore.

This discomfort issue can be addressed with things like mobile kickstands, but it means that mobile video calling is not going to be the thing you use to have a one hour long call with grandma. You're still going to want to use the PC or TV for that.

However, mobile video lets you do things that you simply can't do on the PC or TV. An obvious example is 'see-what-I-see', which is typically a shorter call, whose purpose is to show something to the other person. My favorite use case for this is when you go to the grocery store to buy a box of pasta for your wife, only to discover that there are a million different brands of that pasta on the shelves. With see-what-I-see, you can show her the options and discuss them in real time. This is much more useful than trying to describe what each box looks like in order to find the one she wants.

Technology can't solve these problems in quite the same way as the first five, so we'll have to look elsewhere for solutions. In my final post, I'll discuss two societal problems that probably have the most fundamental effect on the way people make mobile video calls.

The Ten Deadly Sins of Mobile Video Calling - Sins 1-5: Technology

Since the dawn of humanity, mankind has always sought to communicate. Back in the beginning, things were simple. Grunts, pointing of fingers, clubbing on the head. Primitive, but it got the message across.

Mankind quickly discovered that it needed a way to communicate when the other person isn't right next to you. And so began a long series of inventions over centuries of time. Cave drawings, the written word, paper, the postal system and finally the arrival of electronic communications: The telegraph, the telephone. The telephone network was virtually transformed from the inside out when it went digital in the middle of the 20th century.

The next big revolution, of course, was mobile calling and the arrival of cellular networks. Ultimately it still provided the same old service as the wired telephone network did, but you could take it with you. With the Internet, a whole host of new communications services emerged - most notably email and IM. Ultimately though, these were just different manifestations of an old idea - sending text from one person to another. The telegraph had that too, decades prior. It just wasn't quite as easy to use. The Internet also brought the arrival of Voice over IP. In many ways, Voice over IP has been hugely successful. But when we look at it closely, it is also - to a large degree - another repackaging of what we have already been doing - voice, communicated over a distance. It got cheaper, and it got easier to use. But, was it really more - was it really better?

Not really. And that's what's startling here. When we look at communications, especially in modern times, what we find is that there have been huge advances in the things that surround real-time communications, but not the communications itself. Look at the mobile phone. This is a technology whose change over the last 20 years - even the last decade - is nothing short of phenomenal. Compare the original Motorola brick phone to the iPhone 4 - astounding. But as a phone - as a service for communications - you get almost the same experience. 20 years ago, we dialed numbers and we got tinny voice conversations. Today I get the same experience.

One of the things Skype is doing is trying to make this calling experience better.

With the SILK codec, we've introduced super-wideband voice calling to mobile devices around the world, enabling crisper conversations, easier interpretation of accents and an overall high quality voice experience. But voice is just the first step. To more fundamentally transform the communications experience, we needed to add video. And so we did.

The idea of video calling is certainly not new. The first videophone was shown at the World's Fair in 1964 - ages ago. The technology wasn't there yet, and it is only in recent years that video communications has gone mainstream. How mainstream? Well - let me share some of our statistics.

Thumbnail image for Video_telephony_as_imagined_in_1910.jpg

On average, 42% of Skype-to-Skype calls include video* and the number is probably even higher at peak times - around New Year celebrations, for example. And, Skype-to-Skype calling minutes are equivalent to approximately 20% of all global international PSTN and Skype-to-Skype calling minutes.**

Global video calls.JPG

Where video is going next is mobile. 2010 was undoubtedly the year that video calling arrived on mobile. Mobile video calling is also not new - we've seen a long line of failed mobile video products over many years. But we're still at the beginning of mobile video. Getting mobile video right is actually really hard. Indeed, there are - in essence - ten deadly sins of mobile video, each of which, if not adequately addressed, can stop the technology dead in its tracks.

They fall into three categories, which I'll explore in this blog post and two more later this week.

The first bunch of them are related to technology.

Sin 1: No cameras

Simple, but a big deal. Without a camera in the front of the phone, you are simply not going to have a video conference call. You might have a see-what-I-see experience using the rear camera - and Qik is great for this - but you really want both. Though phones with front facing cameras have been available outside of the US, they were never mainstream and never made their way stateside. That changed (finally) last year with the iPhone4 and iPod touch, which brought front facing cameras mainstream. Android phones have caught on now too, and we're seeing a bunch of them roll out now with front facing cameras. Great - and fortunately for us, advancements in technology are squashing this sin.

Sin 2: Lousy screens

Video needs screen real estate. Until recently, we just didn't have it. Prior to the arrival of devices like the iPhone and the Motorola DROID, screens were generally small and had meager resolutions too. Now, we finally have what we need - screens which are the size of the phone with resolutions that can show video crisp enough to see the smile on someone's face.

And so, once again, general advancements in technology have addressed this problem too.

Sin 3: Slow networks

Video needs a lot more bandwidth than voice. Our iPhone app needs about 600Kb/s to make a decent video call. Until a few years ago, you just couldn't get that kind of speed on a mobile phone. Two things have addressed this:

  • The arrival of 3G cellular networks, which often (but not always) have enough bandwidth to carry a mobile video call.
  • The widespread availabiity of WiFi on smartphones. WiFi is not without problems, but at least it tends to provide the bandwidth needed for a video call. Fortunately, many calls - video or otherwise - happen in either the home or the workplace. Those are the two places many users have WiFi enabled on their phones.

Put together, WiFi and 3G cellular networks mean that bandwidth is available in many more locations, making video calls possible.

Sin 4: Slow processors

Video not only requires more bandwidth than voice; it requires more CPU resources too. Encoding a QVGA video stream on a typical smartphone consumes a sizeable percentage of the CPU resources when performed in the main processor. Higher resolutions are out of reach of the CPU, and require hardware assistance from dedicated encoding chips.

To be fair, this isn't just a problem for mobile phones - it's still a problem for PCs. The typical modern PC is still not powerful enough to encode an HD video stream in realtime. Even VGA doesn't work on many PCs yet. No surprise that it is barely possible on the majority of mobile devices.

The situation around hardware acceleration of video encoding and decoding is also a big problem right now. On some platforms, there is hardware accelerated functionality, but it is not available to third-party applications like Skype, and iOS is an example of this. Facetime uses hardware acceleration to improve quality, but those improvements are not available through the iOS API.

The problem isn't just about raw CPU horsepower. It's also about latency. Realtime communications - both voice and video - are really sensitive to delays. For an ideal experience, you want the amount of time it takes between when one person speaks to when the other person hears to be under 150 milliseconds.

Think about it like this: In order to have a mobile video call, video frames must be captured from the camera, sent through the phone hardware, and processed by the software on the phone - on both sides, all in a timely fashion.

Unfortunately, the video camera systems on many phones were designed for streaming video and recording, which has much more relaxed delay requirements. As a result, many phones on the market today have hundreds of milliseconds of delay just for capturing a video frame and making it available to the software on the phone. The problem is even more complex on Android, where the variety of different phones, each with differing hardware and designs, make life even harder for developers like Skype.

Sin 5: Poor UI

It's amazing how easy it is to design a bad UI. The UI for mobile video has to make it dead simple to use. It's easy to focus on the obvious stuff - selecting contacts, making the call, hanging up the call. But the harder stuff has to be handled too.

The biggest hurdle is figuring out whether the person you want to call has the right equipment in the first place. This isn't specific to video - it has been a major complaint of users in adoption of online communication products in general. For video, we now have to factor in the question of whether the person you want to call has a camera or not. Does the device they are on even support video? How do you let the person you want to call know that everything is 'ready' in intuitive ways? How do you identify and find people who you can call?

Then there are other complexities - do you allow people to make voice-only calls? What about shutting off video? How does the other side know that a video shut-off is not a consequence of a problem? Should you let them know that the sender cancelled their video or does that complicate the UI? How do you let the other side know that your video is being received?

These problems are surmountable, but will require time and investment in UI.

These items - the cameras, the screens, the processors, the networks, and the UI - all of them are likely to improve over time with the never-ending improvements in technology. However, even if we eliminate all of these problems, there are others which technology itself is unlikely to solve. Those are the problems I'll be covering in my next posts.

Thanks for this new version, thanks for not leaving symbian users with no support after last nokia announcements regarding symbian.

OTOH, When will we have video support? How difficult it is? I mean, Fring was able to do that why can't you do the same?

fabricio.gouvea commented Thursday, Jun 2

What about Symbian S60 3rd (non-touch screen like N95)?
By the way, m.skype.com (or skype.com/m) mistankenly detects my N95 as a Symbian 5th device and also gives me an old version of it (prior to 1.5).
I had to use the link to 1.5 below and install it from my pc.
Best wishes

Can you pls. make sure that you can download v2.0 and not a very old one
THANKS

yep same question here: When will we have video support? How difficult it is? I mean, Fring was able to do that why can't you do the same?

I and many others have nokia phones with front facing camera but we never use it. i have nokia 5800 and i never used the front camera. by the time i found it that fring can do video call via skype i was too late because skype pulled a plug from fring :(

thanks.

edwardthebedward commented Sunday, Jun 26

Fantastic that Skype continue to support such a wide range of phones. My 5800 is still going strong!

Three suggestions to make the software even better:

1) Allow us to choose a WLAN connection as the default (or possibly the only) option if we want to. I never get offered wireless at startup, I just have to reject two GPRS options and then it connects to my WLAN automatically (though doesn't tell me). This is despite the fact that the WLAN is the first/top option on my phone's Connection Settings. For most internet-based applications you can go into App Manager, then choose Suite Settings and give it a default connection, tell it not to allow roaming etc (e.g. Snaptu does this). Would be great if Skype allowed this.

2) Provide a "reconnect" option. If Skype fails to find an internet connection or it drops it during use, then it still looks like it is signed in and will even allow me to make calls, even though it is no longer connected to the internet. The only way to reconnect is to quit and then open the application again.

3) This one is a really tiny issue but it would be nice to have ... If I sign out then Skype forgets my username and password, so I have to type it in again. This is despite having the Remember Me box ticked. So I have to Options / Exit instead. Surely Exit is much more common than signing out on a phone, which probably only has one Skype user? Would be nice if it always remembered my details ands signed me in unless I went to Options / Sign Out or something. Unlikely to be needed very often.

john.vbatech commented Friday, Jul 1

I see Android got video calling today. Bizarre how Skype with its European roots has sold out to Apple and Google. The Nokia N8 with the best camera in the industry and a second forward-facing camera that ran Skype codecs perfectly through Fring until the BIG FEUD... still awaits Skype video calling after more than a year on the market (even with $85 Billion from Microsoft with its Nokia connection).

ibathazi commented Wednesday, Jul 6

It would be also nice if you would fix the app so it does not drain the battery. Without Skype i can use my phone for 2 days with Skype running not even 8 hours. Please fix it or open up the API again so more efficient applications can be used again with video support. Thank you.

I download the skype app for adroid but it doesn't allow me to send sms from my android. I am really interested in you to fix that problem. That's the only way for me to send sms to my friends in Cuba, they are not allowed to receive sms from a cell which is located in the usa but they receive sms through Skype. I know skype for iphone has that capability I wonder why it doesn't work for Android. If you please could fix that I'll really appreciate it. I've been using skype for so long; I really wouldn’t like to have the necessity to change to another app looking for something that you probable could fix. To sum up, my request is to get the capability in my LG optimus m (android) to send sms from my android through skype. I hope you do something about that, something more than just read this comment. Thank you.

Seriously guys, get it together! My Mac sounds like it wants to shoot itself every time I launch the new Skype, so you still have CPU issues that you need to fix that have been present from the first beta of 5.0. You also have some conferencing bugs, again, which I'll be filing in hopes that you finally fix them in less than the time it took you to do hardly anything.

Skype 5.3 for Windows: Improved received video quality on calls with mobiles and quality improvements

We have just released Skype 5.3 for Windows.

For this release, we've spent the majority of our time improving Skype's call quality, and have fixed a number of bugs.

We would recomend to upgrade now and let us know how you like the new version via discussing matters on our forums or in case something unexpected happens, then please report it to us via our public issue tracker.

In addition to these quality-related efforts we have also introduced some feature improvements:

  • Improved quality of video received from Skype on mobile devices
  • Skype shows users' presence icons on collapsed contact profile cards
  • Conversation topic editing button is now always available on the conversation header
  • If a phone number is added to a profile after a failed call attempt, Skype starts a call automatically
  • Automatically switch to SMS entry after user adds mobile phone number to profile after failing to send SMS due to lack of phone number
Further details about the tweaks introduced on this version:

Improved quality of video received from Skype on mobile devices.
We have improved the quality of the received video from the mobile Skype clients by rotating the video on the computer side, where more processing power is available. It enables us to send a higher resolution video from the mobile devices.

Skype shows users' presence icons on collapsed contact profile cards.
We have re-introduced to show a presence icon on a collapsed contact profile card. It enables the user to see the conversations partners presence state while being able to reduce the profile information to minimum.

Conversation topic editing button is now always available on the conversation header.
A small "i" button is displayed in the header of all conversations. This button allows you to change the conversation topic.

Skype 2.2 beta for Linux with Skype Access and improved audio/video quality

Today is the day.

I'm glad to write to you about Skype 2.2 beta for Linux. The major new features of the Skype 2.2 for Linux are:

  • Skype Access
  • Support for call waiting and holding

Support for call waiting and holding
Skype for Linux now supports call waiting and holding. It's especially good if you are hosting a conference calls and people are calling in. In addition we have also included a support for easy conference call hosting.

Improved audio/video quality on calls
We have updated the underlying libraries to the newest version available, which should enhance audio and video call quality and reliability.

Known issues:

Category Description Workaround
Installation Skype fails to be installed on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 1 Visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/712377 for the suggested fix.
General Logging out and then in, intermittently causes Skype to crash None available
General On Debian amd64 version Skype crashes on startup with the message: "Inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-open.c: 623: \_dl_open: Assertion `_dl_debug_initialize (0, args.nsid)->r_state == RT_CONSISTENT' failed\!" This seems to be Debian only issue with 32 bit PulseAudio libraries being installed even if PulseAudio is not active, a workaround can be:
- Debian Lenny: sudo chmod a-r /usr/lib32/libpulse{-simple.so.0.0.1,.so.0.4.1}
- Debian Squeeze: sudo chmod a-r /usr/lib32/libpulse{-simple.so.0.0.2,.so.0.8.0,common-0.9.15.so}
General On some amd64 distributions avatars are not showing, this is a problem with 32-bits emulation Qt library. Qt tries to find its image format plugins, but finds a 64-bits version instead and fails to load it. A workaround is to specify a plugin path when launching skype like this:
- Ubuntu 64 bit: install ""ia32-libs"" package and launch Skype with: QT_PLUGIN_PATH=/usr/lib32/qt4/plugins skype
- Arch 64 bit (with 32 bit chroot installed in /opt/arch32): QT_PLUGIN_PATH=/opt/arch32/usr/lib/qt/plugins skype
- Other distributions might have a different path.
Options When PulseAudio is enabled in the audio settings, only that specific entry will be available. To change PulseAudio settings, use the PulseAudio manager tool that is bundled with your distribution.
Video Your video capture might show seldomly green, scrambled or black image. Please install one additional package which might solve your problem:
- Ubuntu 32 bit: install ""libv4l-0"" package and launch Skype with: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype
- Ubuntu 64 bit: install ""lib32v4l-0"" package and launch Skype with: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype
- Other distributions might have the same library, but may have a different path.

still no useable version (native 64bit) after years, why dont you even bother continue developing it?

mazurkiewicz.damian commented Wednesday, Apr 6

There is 64 bit version native from that what I see in Ubuntu deb packages.

s_w_snyder commented Wednesday, Apr 6

I expect plenty of people will pile on csamsel2002's comment, saying that the x86 build works fine on their x86_64 system. The reason to desire a native x86_64 is to avoid a lot of compatibility libraries.

These are the 32-bit packages I have to have installed on Fedora 14/x86_64 to support Skype:

The Skype v2,2Beta x86 binary is 21MB in size (!), where the v2.1Beta2 binary was 18MB. They must already be statically linking a lot of libraries to get the binaries this big.

s_w_snyder commented Wednesday, Apr 6

A question for the developers: why is Skype blacklisted on Fedora for prelinking?

Given that Skype demand-loads many, many libraries, it sure would be nice (hint, hint) if all those symbols were reconciled *before* I click on the Skype icon. Just sayin'.

vadiperetokin1 commented Wednesday, Apr 6

Thanks a ton for the update!

I wish we could hide Skype's notification icon, because people can use the API to controll Skype (and spawn the window).

ultra-fine commented Wednesday, Apr 6

Great many thanks for the update, but ... where's 64bit version of Skype? It's the only application on my Linux which prevents me from moving into the shiny 64bit computing world. :(

facorread commented Wednesday, Apr 6

Thanks to the folks at Skype for the great efforts in bringing this great product to Linux. In spite of previous comments, I understand you don't have to develop a Linux version at all, and despite our little market share, you keep making the efforts and investment in our favorite OS. I commend you for that.

zilvador commented Wednesday, Apr 6

Thank you for the update!! I I hope that we go back to see more of those regularly from now on.

benjavalero commented Wednesday, Apr 6

I hoped I could see at last tabs in order not to have one window per conversation. No luck :(

lavoleous commented Wednesday, Apr 6

It's a real shame this doesn't work on a mainstream OS like RHEL5. The last version did. Is there any chance you can change the dependencies so that we don't get this message:

./skype: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by ./skype)

as it's obvious this isn't going to work. What is it in the new Skype that needs 3.4.9 stuff? Please redistribute with a lower dependency!

[rhel5-box]# strings /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 | grep GLIBCXX
GLIBCXX_3.4
GLIBCXX_3.4.1
GLIBCXX_3.4.2
GLIBCXX_3.4.3
GLIBCXX_3.4.4
GLIBCXX_3.4.5
GLIBCXX_3.4.6
GLIBCXX_3.4.7
GLIBCXX_3.4.8
GLIBCXX_FORCE_NEW

lavoleous commented Wednesday, Apr 6

Not that I'm not grateful, you understand. Thank you for bothering to actually develop a linux version.

echiot commented Wednesday, Apr 6

It was about time! Many thanks.
There's a greek translation for skype, why not include it?

winniemiel commented Wednesday, Apr 6

That's great ! With 2.1, video didn't workd. with 2.2, VIDEO AND SOUND DO NOT WORK !!! (sound is just horrible)

winniemiel commented Wednesday, Apr 6

Is there an efficient way to do bug reports?

kropemann3000 commented Wednesday, Apr 6

I for one am happy about ongoing development. Thanks for the update!

iwillky commented Wednesday, Apr 6

About time! Good job. Props for the 64bit versions for Debian and ubuntu.
However, we still cannot make video conference calls? Please get version 5+ to Linux soon? Thanks.

craig1001 commented Wednesday, Apr 6

Would be nice to have a proper 64 bit version. However, I'm just happy I have Skype.

Only problem with this upgrade is my desktop video has stopped working. It's a "Creative WebCam Live!". Would this be a similar problem to the Logitechs?

da_apz commented Wednesday, Apr 6

Great job. Could you fix the .deb repos? As you have an official "amd64" version (although it's just packaged to look that way), it'd be great if it was installable and upgradeable without manually downloading the package.

banda_satura commented Wednesday, Apr 6

Skype for linux is simply a vintage software!

luke.danielle.gerhardt commented Wednesday, Apr 6

Anyone know if this works with B2K devices? I use kb2kskype on Ubuntu 10.10 and don't want to break my setup!

On another note: Here's a great big, fat BOO on you for not supporting speed dial #s (in Linux or Windows versions). Do I need to come work for you guys in order to get this feature uncommented out in the source code?? [Send me a salary offer, and I'll consider it... ;)]

bwpearre commented Wednesday, Apr 6

I grabbed the static version, running on latest Debian Sid.

When I installed it in ~/skype/skype_static-blahblah and linked ~/bin/skype -> ~/skype/blah (so the shell finds the linked one in my path) it does not find any of its sound files (can complete test call, but get no notification sounds, and "play a test sound" doesn't work (without any error messages). I have to run it from its own dir, and then it works.

Also: thanks, guys! I thought you were dead! Especially happy to see that there is a hotkey for fullscreen.

bwpearre commented Thursday, Apr 7

Also, what is the fullscreen video hotkey? Is it configurable? It's not in the README and nothing obvious is in the config file.

gaygerbil commented Thursday, Apr 7

Just hit F man it's not that hard. I wish they put D for double size though.

matteo.sgasi commented Thursday, Apr 7

That's it?
After more than 1 year you come up with another beta and with almost no improvements?
have you ever heard "64 bit"?
Really you'd better drop the support for linux rather than treating the entire linux community like a bunch of stupids.

trevor.hemsley commented Thursday, Apr 7

Your download page still says "Version 2.1.0.81" at the bottom even though clicking on the links to download will get the 2.2 version.

bwpearre commented Thursday, Apr 7

Just out of interest, does the statically linked binary work on 64-bit systems? If so, what are y'all whining about, exactly? If not, then my condolences--that sucks.

humufr commented Thursday, Apr 7

At least... I have to do some more test to verify that it's working better than the 2.1 version. This version was just not working since 2 or 3 months probably because of some change on skype server. And for what I see the "change" and new feature are so sparse that it cannot be a one year of work. There are still no conference call for linux, thanks it's one of the feature that I miss but I do have big hope that a real alternative will emerge so I can remove this software from my hard drive. The concurrence does have time we just got our anual "update". A very unhappy client (by the way you can check that I didn't buy new credit recently, skype call was so unreliable and so bad that it was just throwing my money in the toilett).

abecchio86 commented Thursday, Apr 7

Another beta version? Have we to wait 3 years again for a new beta release or finally we can have a stable version?? :-|

andybleaden commented Thursday, Apr 7

Thanks for that.

If like me others have logitech webcams that then stop working when you upgrade remember that there is a work around
You can use your terminal to open skype and get your camera working like this
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype

Or edit your launcher for Skype so for instance in Ubuntu
Main menu
Select Internet>Skype>Properties and in the command box insert

bash -c 'LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype'

Then close

When you launch skype now and test your camera it should work :)

mde982025 commented Thursday, Apr 7

Works wonderful here in Arch Linux, thank you developers and also the maintainer for their work :) next could you improve on the look further, and add more configuration options to the chat windows? Don't need the time stamps for instance! or at least move it to the right side next to the name instead, would look a lot better.

barna1959 commented Thursday, Apr 7

barna1959 commented Thursday, Apr 7

nikita.grachev commented Thursday, Apr 7
