Skype for Symbian beta release

We're pleased to announce that we are ready to release a limited beta of our upcoming Symbian phones client, Skype for Symbian.

This beta release of Skype for Symbian supports more than ten different handsets, with the production release planned to be compatible with even more phones.

Skype for Symbian supports:
* Free Skype-to-Skype calling
* Call phones with Skype credits or subscription
* Receive calls on your Online Number
* Instant Messaging
* Group conversations
* File sending and receiving

Skype for Symbian works over Wifi or 3G data connection. We recommend having a unlimited data plan when using 3G connection.

We would like to get all your feedback on this beta release. Did you like it? Did we miss anything? Did you have any trouble using it? Did you have any technical issues?

Let us know about it on our forums.

Please remember that it is a beta release, which means that the quality is not up to our usual high standards. If you experience any bumps during the usage of the client then please let us know.

Supported phones and download links:
* Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 devices
* Nokia E71
* Nokia E63
* Nokia E66
* Nokia N82
* Nokia E51

* Nokia N96
* Nokia N85
* Nokia 5320
* Nokia 6210 Navigator
* Nokia 6210 Classic
* Nokia N78
* Nokia N79

Some usage notes:
* Install it to the phone memory (needs 6mb of free space)
* Install over the air or via Nokia PC Suite, or just send the application file to phone over bluetooth

Please see list of the known issue on our Skype for Symbian Wiki page and read the full user guide.

alsiladka commented Thursday, Dec 10

Is the Nokia N86 not supported or you guys missed it in the list of compatible FP2 devices.

dvzevs_89 commented Thursday, Dec 10

Is there will bi version for Nokia 5530 / 5800 ?

serrebi2006 commented Thursday, Dec 10

THank you for releasing a uncrippled symbian product. It is amazing. I am blind and it plays well with Nuance talks, my screen reader. I hope this continues. I had stopped using skype because of 4.0's interface and the codek acting wanky on my connection, but on the mobile platform it's probably the best voip solution right now in terms of latency, which is important.

daniel.david.alarcon commented Thursday, Dec 10

Great beggining, still work to do on the application, but Skype is in the right path, who/where can I give feedback on this? I'm using it in a Nokia E71.

randomstriker commented Thursday, Dec 10

I can't believe it took you so long to get around to this. Given that S60V3 FP1 and FP2 devices far out number any other smartphone platform, this is a win-win for both consumers and for Skype!!!!

marc_antunes commented Thursday, Dec 10

Finally... maybe is too late for that after Nimbuzz and Fring...
Waiting for E75 compatibility.
Good lucky!

serroba commented Thursday, Dec 10

and when for N97????

will be a Qt 4.6 application??

lipcho commented Thursday, Dec 10

I tested it on nokia N96 and the microphone was not working on skype

antonio.chamuco commented Thursday, Dec 10

I have installed on my E75.... chat was fine but I could not have voice :(...

tikoipsuvashbe commented Thursday, Dec 10

10 minutes signing out :(

ekramsam commented Thursday, Dec 10

I just got an n900 because there was no native support for skype on my n97.

I guess It's just a matter of time now before all symbian devices are supported.

I wonder if there will be any lag duing skypeout calls. Those of you that have used fring and nimbuzz know what I'm talking about.

amir81s commented Thursday, Dec 10

Thanks for releasing such a screen-reader accessible application with such a polished UI! It works perfectly well with Nuance TALKS&ZOOMS V4.X. In particular, the IM window is quite accessible - hope it won't be broken in future betas or in the final release.

lthaler commented Thursday, Dec 10

doesn't install on N78, says that a component is already present on phone, and fails :-(

demir-2007 commented Thursday, Dec 10

Will you create this application for some older phones(sug ass nokia e65?)? Thanks

Will you create this application for some older phones(sug ass nokia e65?)? Thanks

demir-2007 commented Thursday, Dec 10

Will you release this application for older phones like nokia e65? Thanks!

patrick0204 commented Friday, Dec 11

Thanks very much for the release. The UI works very well on my 5800 and it does support touch screen. However, first, I can't get the voice to work, neither incomiing or outgoing; second, I have unilimted world subscription, but the app does not reconigze this, it keeps saying I don't have skypeout credits; Third, when I press the green key on the phone in the App, it will use skype to call directly, it's great, but it has a bug which will ativate the phone's dial pad also; Fourth, the setting option desn't seem to be working.

wplay12 commented Friday, Dec 11

Working well with Nokia E71 (Firmware: 400-21-013)

cvandend commented Friday, Dec 11

Please add N97 support!

andrew.reznik commented Friday, Dec 11

its all well and nice but where is the support for the S60V5 devices like the N97 and the 5800 ?

archengel46 commented Friday, Dec 11

There is some problem with installing it on N78. Does anyone else have the problem of "can't install, already present on device" error?

zverillion commented Friday, Dec 11

Please add sending DTMF tones during call.

qsmyle commented Friday, Dec 11

Nokia 6210 Classic phone doesn't extist. Nokia 6210 was a slim phone with monocrome display approximately in the Middle Ages. I wish it had a capability to run symbian programs. :D I think you mean Nokia 6120 Classic.

senthilruban commented Friday, Dec 11

How abt Sony Ericsson's Symbian phone support?

vikiapps commented Friday, Dec 11

Hi there,

I loving this App, and Its working flawlessly on my Nokia N95 8GB.
If anyone is interested I have posted a number of screenshots about the Application in action on my Nokia N95 8GB:
http://vikiapps.com/67/a-first-look-at-skype-for-symbian-mobiles-beta/

I installed it on the mass memory even though the developers asked it to be installed on phone memory. I just wanted to test it and give feedback, and I am happy to tell you it works great even from the mass memory!

No glitches were encountered during the installation process, except that it takes a bit of time to install (7 mins), which is understandable considering its a 4.2 MB Mobile App.

Thanks to all the developers at Skype who made this possible and the first version is working quite well! Keep up the great work!

Viki.

neil.mcc78 commented Friday, Dec 11

this will be a great ap when fixed but still quite buggy. won't let me sign in all the time and won't ring or alert me for incoming messages. As has all ready been said as a blind user it works really well with my screen reader talks. please take note and keep it that way. i am using an f p 2 n 85 though also have tried it on the n 86 and it works also or at least bugs asside.

great ap so keep up the good work.

jan.mobile.e71 commented Friday, Dec 11

just downloaded and installed on my e71 seems to work good, clear voice,fast file sharing only snag i can find till now is that when ringin on receiving end,, phone is quit rings only once then silence till picked up on otherside so u dont know if ringing there or been disconnected or what....
keep up the good work!!! ur saving me a bundlle!! tnx

neil.mcc78 commented Friday, Dec 11

What's so different about this app? Isn't this similar to Skype Lite: http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/skypelite/ which works just fine on my Nokia N95 8GB.

akirwa commented Friday, Dec 11

Been testing the app on E51, works great, the ringing on the other end though happens only once until picked up. The login and logout is mighty fast, a good job for a beta product.

omricoh commented Friday, Dec 11

I have small issue, I think has to be fixed.
When calling someone, I get the connecting sound,
and then after the first dialing sound, nothing is heard,
until the contact you are calling to answers.

Another thing is that you must let the option of switching to loudspeaker
while calling and not only the contact answered.

thanks

jerzyguzenda commented Friday, Dec 11

Hi!
Great idea!
But what with Samsung SGH-G810 >>>

HSDPA 3.6 Mbps,
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g,
Video Call Cam,
Symbian OS v9.2,
Series 60 rel. 3.0,

I`ve got a problem during installation with certificate !!!

steve.garon commented Friday, Dec 11

Seriously weak. Not integrated with the symbian os, It shouldn't be its own app. Beside, I never could make any call (Call Drop, Call Drop... Oh wait .. no .. Call drop). We've been waiting so long for this?

I'm keeping to my VOIP provider, at least its interated to the os and I can make calls.

w3staz commented Friday, Dec 11

Well, I have some suggestions. First, I want to thank you guys, for creating especially on Symbian. BTW, this works on N85 too, I tested it. In full version, you should add sounds and change text writing. Because, when I writing text, it shows only one row of text, all other text "hides" after some words only for example I write Hey, how are you doing John. I can see only last 3 words. And one more thing. I think, it should pop-up symbol or something like that, when someone has written to me. That's all from me. Thanks for understanding.

impudentblindone commented Friday, Dec 11

Hi,
Good job on this beta, working well on a Nokia N82, using the TALKS screen reader. Is there a way I can send touch tones after I connect so that I can access a phone menu?

pmhooge commented Friday, Dec 11

I'm in the US and my dad has a N95 in the Philippines. We use Skype to communicate almost daily. He installed it on his Nokia Dec 10 and it worked just fine when I called him from my PC. Only catch is that our 5 minute conversation took $1 off his Skype credit account even though he was on wifi. I'm guessing this is why it is being called a BETA release. I was under the impression that this would be like a PC to PC call and be free.

Slightly disappointed!

danielle_mccullough commented Saturday, Dec 12

Hi there,

Although Nokia N86 is not supported, it worked totally fine for it. The only slight problem is, if you tell it to remember your password, it won't let you sign in. Also using Talks. Please don't break the brilliant accessibility when you update this program???!!!

rio-israel commented Saturday, Dec 12

Hi
I just installed Skype on my Nokia E71. It is working fine but:
1- didn't find a way to manage a call and write a message simultaneously.
2- no video chat available. Maybe it is too early to have this feature but worth to have it someday.

Call quality is high but didn't feel huge difference compared to Fring.
Keep going Skype team. Waiting to hear news about this beta launch.
Rio.

shaked_ang commented Saturday, Dec 12

Super. Finally, Skype for Symbian. So far I have used Fringe.
I hope that official directly to Skype for Symbian will be better than the Skype third party.
Still could do translations.
However the world does not know English.

Please can we we have Nokia E72 support added. I've tried it & it doesn't work unfortunately.

neil.mcc78 commented Saturday, Dec 12

one other thing i feel it would be useful to add is to allow you to contrul the volume whilst on a call. this i feel needs to be corrected. yet again grat ap. am loving it

jariiik.jet commented Monday, Dec 14

I'm on symbian for a while now, my current phone is N97.. As I'm living in the UK and I'm with 3, I have the version provided by 3, but it's not proper skype anyway, as we all know.. I always had a back up for calling through fring, and nimbuzz, and at the moment Nimbuzz is ahead.. I would not even be bothered until it leaves beta.. Unless Skype shocks me with the version for N97.. We'll see.. Prove me wrong..

rafaelml2009 commented Monday, Dec 14

vega1979 commented Monday, Dec 14

I have installed it on a Nokia E51. I have to admit the quality of the audio call is pretty impressive. So far the only (big) problem I have got is that no sound alert is available for incoming messages. If anybody knows a solution please let me know.

What about 6120 Classic?

george_py1ha commented Monday, Dec 14

My E71 only works with the Echo/Sound test service
All contacts appear but it does not connect

fbarousse commented Monday, Dec 14

It's a bit "heavy" in terms of the installed file. 6 MB of free space required !

¿ Could it be used from the external memory card ? It'd be interesting that way, as to not clutter the phone memory.

Video conferencing would be a request as well.

Thanks and congrats on this for Symbian !

I have the latest firmware V400.x.x
After downloading the file, when I'm trying to install i'm getting a message on my E71 that the file is defected or corrupted.
The file that i downloaded is
Skype_S60_3_1_v_0_9_0.sis
Size: 116 KB (119,485 bytes)
Any ideas?

rioalo commented Thursday, Dec 17

Great application for Nokia Symbian 3rd. Thank for Skype development team
Better sound than skype on fring, Login very fast
But need more work, in order to be a good application

Weak point:

1.Ring tone too too small, and can't change to customize tone. No vibration alert
2.Comsume too much power at idle state( compare with fring), battery will go drain quickly.
3.Drop call after about 20 second if use EDGE.
4.No video call

e-debora commented Thursday, Dec 17

I have the same problem with 78. It does not install

ziashka commented Thursday, Dec 17

i am using fring from a long time but i just installed skype on my e66, works realy well, sound quality is great,fast sign in, but i will agree with the above made comments.
1: no option for change in ring tone.
2: Ring and message tone is too low and no vibration.

but in my case i made a 30 minute call on 3g and there was no call drop.

Hope so skype guys work on the above issues.
good luck and thanks to skype team.

Can you add full support for NOKIA E72 ?

omega1c2 commented Sunday, Dec 20

N97 & N97 mini - WHEN??? i have both.
As for N810, i have that and skype is great. I would have bought
n900 but no att 3g on it. Current beta does work for chat and sms in n97 and
n97 mini BUT not voip even via wifi or mifi. LOL

I think skype made that press release of having native version on either
by 3rd or 4th Q. Skype should have put 2010 not 2009.

omega1c2 commented Sunday, Dec 20

Oh one more, what about Android? I need it for my archos also. Please skype, get you S*** togerther... n97, n97mini, android & all the others that would cause your users to use more of your service.

satirisu commented Sunday, Dec 20

N85, WLAN.
After few calls sound stop work, does not perform call to any recipient, Accept sometime incoming calls but without the sound. Instant messages still works.
I swithed back to the Fring (they support Skype calls).

sklochkovski commented Monday, Dec 21

Thanks guys for Skype for Symbian. On my E53 it seems to be working, the most important feature - group chats finally has been implemented.
Thanks :)
Small remarks:
- In the chat window - could you change the input method, it'd be better to have an inplace editor, rather than a popup single-line editor stripe.
- The option "Hide offline contacts" doesn't affect phone contacts, works only for Skype contacts.
- Finally: When Skype for Nokia touchscreens will be issued?

Thanks again.

hngoettler commented Monday, Dec 21

Great work. Wonderful to use on my E52 with TALKS&ZOOMS. Ith is very accessible with this screen reader for visually impaired people.

However, there's one issue that needs to be fixed:
No matter if I call someone or someone calls me, I cannot here the other party, but I can be heard. After ending the call, the audio management of my E52 FW 021.013 seems to be broken since neither speech output of TALKS&ZOOMS nor any other sounds are put out anymore. I can receive and lead incoming GSM calls, but that's about it for audio.

Just tested with my E72 (FP2 version as mentioned above), installation passed flawlessly.

1. Contact show online .. fine
2. Chat... fine
3. Call skype -> skype ... not work (can't hear)
4. Echo Test ... not work

Caution: If you already installed Fring in your mobile, this Skype will overwrite some VOIP service, it affected on the existing fring voice call also. Please do remove then re-install Fring after tested with Skype.

On the mean time, I do recommend Fring.
Nimbuzz keep freezeing my E72, I don't know why.

Hope Skype will launch official version for Symbian soon. :-)

joaoluispt commented Tuesday, Dec 29

Raul, I am hoping that this post will receive some serious attention as there are many of us out there that find this Beta app distressing, just go to the Forum and you will see that 95% of the users there are not happy with the app and have encountered endless problems. Also for an app that is being tested it seems that there is no feed back and that SKYPE is not monitoring the forum as they should, seeing that this is a Beta version and I would think that the people that actually test the app out in the field would be taken into account. It seems that in General most of the Smart Phones from Nokia are encountering some kind of problem. I myself have encountered a few and when the app was causing my E71 to reboot on its own, it was then that I decided to remove it, also as there was no feedback from SKYPE, I also emailed them with the problems and received no feedback. This lets me believe that there is no interest and Skype leaves their clients hanging. I reverted to using Nimbuzz on my E71 and Fringe on my 5800XM as these apps work 100% and have not caused any problems, the call quality using Skype within them is FANTASTIC. I cant understand why a 3rd party app works better than Skype's own, oh hang on, thats because wjen they released their Beta verisons, THEY LISTENED to the publics posts and ACTUALLY took an interest and resolved issues in REAL TIME. Something that Skype should learn from. No wonder they have each won a number of rewards this year and continue to grow in strengh.
Unhappy Skyper.

vlexat commented Saturday, Jan 2

Yep, the issue with the n78 is still present. I guess it's some kind of FW issue or the .sis-file is designed to work only in some certain kind of environment, or something. I've read somewhere, that it should work normally if you try to install it on the phone memory instead of on the memory card, but I got the same issue, so that workaround, if working, is not working for all intact phones, but only for certain part of them.

For the record:
I have n78 with fw version of 21.002.051.1 (release date 10.03.09).

Hope you guys solve the issue as soon as possible, cause I'd like to use the real skype on my phone, instead of any dumm-a*s alternatives (fring as an instance).

Best regards,
vlex

Hi, What a lot of pointless info here...

I got the Skype 'Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 devices' and installed it on a nokia E75, and it is really satisfying me.

Being a beta, I can say it's already a neat version to me.

I succesfully sign in, contacts show up quite fast. There is a time lag signing out, and signing in (for other contacts seeing my online presence)

Calls are fine, over G3, application is responsive, and promessing.

The setting to have a pre-defined internet connection doesn't stick, so it asks a connection type at startup.
Incoming calls don't give a ringtone, even though the application comes to the front after being hidden.

I have set up a shortcut in the home screen, maybe it would be nice if the icon could update (missed calls, online status,...)

Great work! Is there any feed one can subscribe to for futher development updates?

I have been tesing it on my E71. It worked OK for a few days but now tells me I can't make skypeout calls because my credit has expired (it is only a few months old).

My PC version of skype still lets me make skypeout calls.

oliverwright commented Saturday, Jan 9

I find it hard to find the settings. Once you are in contacts etc, you have to go back to the main page to change the settings (for example the default connection).

Also it would be good to be able to set a first and 2nd choice connection (use wifi where available, then choose 3G).

I have N97mini and N5800xm. Why is there no support for these models even there are already so long on the market. Skype programists - WAKE UP!!! It basically works for me on Nokia 6730c (S60 3rd FP2).

Text chat works well (as in the Skype Lite edition) including notifications on the Nokia home screen.

Regarding VoIP I have experienced two problems:
1.
The microphone worked well but I could not hear the other side (i.e. it worked only one-way). Actually it seems like all the audio output of the phone stopped when I tried this. The phone stopped ringing for (normal) incoming calls. This problem happened when Skype was still running _after_ the VoIP test. When I exited Skype the problem disappeared and the next time I started Skype (but did not perform any VoIP operation) the problem did not happen. So it seems like VoIP operations disable all the audio output of the device (including for Skype itself).
2.
Another problem that I have experienced is high latency (3-5 seconds)
Perhaps it is because there was no 3G coverage where I tried it so it actually used the GPRS link. The GPRS bandwidth (57 Kbps?) is supposed to be enough for VoIP, but since those 2.5G networks were not designed for this kind of realtime traffic the latency is probably much higher. I would have to try it again when I would be in 3G covered area.

I was wondering if anyone knows if would be any possibility to have it ringing when you receive a call?

Thanks, Skype, for finally doing something for Symbian. So far we've only had a well-hidden Skype Lite which was crippled as it couldn't do any VoIP, just text chat.

Like jerzyguzenda, I have a Samsung G810. This phone is comparable to the Nokia N95 with its ARM11 processor @ 330 MHz, so it should be doable.

Btw, the latest Fring release almost gets there: The other party can hear me, but my voice is lost.

Let's see who will be faster... Fring or Skype!

ryanmchutchon commented Friday, Jan 15

On the E72 it installs fine, has a very slick U/I, but when I place a call, there is no audio. Would be great if this could be fixed. Now using fring instead, but would prefer to use Skype if fully functional.

millbrae-skype commented Friday, Jan 22

I used this on a Nokia E63 while travling in Thailand. I logged about five hours of use in hour long conference calls without a glitch! It was fantastic! Only thing I noted were:

1. THe ringing sound is through the external speaker at first then it routes through the ear piece
2. When you have a voice mail the pop up VM indicator won't go away unless you listen to it. A little annoying but nothing major

I added contacts, edited contacts etc. It was flawless.
Oh, all calls were via WiFi.

Thank you to the coders on this!!!

GREAT PRODUCT COULD BE GREATER WITH VIDEO CALLS.

I FIRST INSTALLED FP1 ON MY N95 8GB MASS MEMORY WHICH GAVE ME A FEW PROBLEMS LIKE WHEN SOMEONE CALLED ME THEIR WAS NO RINGING SOUND ON MY PHONE TO LET ME KNOW SOMEONE WAS CALLING ME. + I HAD TO TRY A FEW ATTEMPT TO CALL SOMEONE BEFORE IT CONNECTED THROUGH.

THEN I REINSTALLED IT ON MY PHONE MEMORY AND IT IS WORKING FINE NOW.

PLEASE CAN YOU ADD VIDEO CALLS TO THE FULL VERSION FRINGE HAVE JUST DONE IT BUT IM SURE YOUR VERSION WILL BE MUCH BETTER, 10 TIMES BETTER.

THANK YOU

Thx a lot for your great job. It's a really nice piece of news for us S60 users.

Feedback
I use Nokia 6120c and installed the app. The interface is nice and everything is almost the same as the app on PC.

But when I make a voice call(both a skype-skype call and a skypeout call), it rings(really rings) for 1 sec(both on my phone and on the called device), and then the call failed, with the print on my 6120c's screen "!Call to xxxxx failed"

Maybe it's a particular problem with my phone.
If it's a common problem on Nokia 6120c, I wish you could improve the app. :)
Thanks again for your hard work!

However, phone does not ring audibly with incoming calls so if the phone is in your pocket you are not aware of incoming calls.

It works fine, but I've seen 2 problems:
1) The big problem: it drains battery very quickly. Fring is far away in this area. With Skype open I can only do 1/2 day of normal use of the phone. The phone is also hot after some time..
2) See only online Contacts: this option isn't saved if I exit SKYPE!!

Works like a charm on my e75. You may add it to the compatibility list far as I'm concerned.

The only minor poinnt is the way messaging behaves. When I want to start a message I need to press the first letter of the conversation twice. (That is, I need to press any letter first to bring up the "Write Message" box.

Also, just pressing the key to send a message would be very nice, compared to going through "Options -> Send"

Hi there,
Thenks for Skype for Symbian, it works almost perfectly on 3 Nokia E51 with Talks&Zooms. On one of them I have often signing in problmes and cannot fix that the problem, can't sign in, stops in that window and I must restart the phone. Maybe that's the phone's problem?
I have to mention one major thing on which You must work to help nd people whom are using screenreader for mobile. We can't read IM's only after switching to enable copy/paste in IM tools menu every time. Can you do anything to make Skype for Symbian more accessible, to make readable with Talks&Zooms the instant messages in normal view?
Another thing is that Talks can't recognise the icons (Busy, not at my desk etc) but we can label this icons with names. The reason which for I mentioned that I can't label the busy icon cause i don't understand the code of that icon. It begins with 7410 which is understandable but follows for letters which aren't. Could You tell me that code?
Thanks again, good job!

Nokia 5800 Express Music
Symbian V31.0.101
Tested only WLAN connection

Fairly nice interface of Skype. Some things are not OK though. When it starts it makes too loud sound which can not be changed in settings. When someone calls me I hear too quite sound (no option for setting the volume) and the vibration works. However the ringing is very short and I don't see a way to answer the call. When I click on something then I finally see the notification for the call. When I try to make a call everything seems fine until 10-15 seconds later when Skype says Call Dropped. After a few tries I quit the application. Besides the IM worked fine for the short period I used it (a few minutes).

Too much bugs for the moment as one can see in all that posts above. I think I will try another application like Fringe until Skype becomes stable.

I hope the developers check this forum for feedback on their work even if they don't reply.
