Skype and Windows 7

EN-w7-comp_rgb_M.png

Many of you have asked about Skype and Windows 7 - and I'm happy to announce that Skype 4.1 is certified as being compatible with Windows 7.

If you don't already have the latest version, you should download it now - it now includes screen sharing as well as improved audio and video quality.

In a future version of Skype for Windows we plan to introduce features which integrate with the improved taskbar and jumplist functions within Windows 7.

I upgraded my Windows Vista to Windows 7 and Skype isn't working. It works for a few minutes and then it stops. It almost "freezes" saying that it's processing my message, but it never does and then I can't get back on Skype once I sign out.

Feature to be useful on next skype:
now it is possible to change ones contacts name but if you do this you never see what is the present name choose by the contact. It would be very useful if it would be written somewhere in the brackets or other place.

Thx

I agree to n-yoshi. I hate 4.1 as well. Looks awful like a program for kids and is very unclear. I simply just hate the icons that changed! Good functions also got erased (chat topic, picture).

I stay with 3.8 and recommend it to my friends which mostly now also use 3.8.

Cant wait to see 4.2 or even better 3.9!!!

I have been using Skype on Windows 7 before the official launch and since. The only issues I have come accross is the usual MS operating system ones like looks as if the OS has found the hardware (say my webcam) but for some reason it doesnt work. After finding new drivers for harware specifically for 7 all is good. Windows 7 is very particular about drivers. Skype however rules. I call all over the world on Skype out and also on Skype in and nothing compares for quality and clarity of both voice and video. I really challange anyone to find a better product to do all the things that Skype offer !!!

Man, I have spent most of Sunday trying to get a Philips VOIP321 to work with Windows 7. Worked like a dream on XP before.
I downloaded the Vista version drivers and installed ok. Skype 4.1 actually asks if it is ok to use Philips VOIP321..... Click ok, but it never actually works. Contacts on the phone are unavailable.

Has anybody managed to get this phone working on W7?

Just installed Win 7 home premium. Got Skype 4.1 installed as well. Now Skype signs in (I can hear the sound), but it sits in the task bar and I cannot maximize the program.

I have tried re-installing skype and also older versions. Same result. When I hold the mouse over the skype icon, the main skype screen is displayed, but then I click on it, nothing happens.

Any suggestions?

cwingerd commented Tuesday, Nov 17

Not sure if this will be seen or even help but yes, Skype does work with Windows 7 x64 and even starts up without any issues. The problem I'm having is Skype will not remain running after boot up and once Windows has cycled through all the processes and maybe a couple minutes later, Skype just turns off. The only way for me to verify this is by hovering my mouse cursor over the Skype icon in the task bar at the bottom right; the icon just disappears. I then have to manually restart Skype which starts up just fine and runs without issues.

The command line in "msconfig" says: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe" /nosplash /minimized

I tried changing this line to remove the forward slash commands and then change my UAC to "Never Notify" which did not work. While Skype v4.1 does work in Windows 7, it appears there is some error with it starting up properly and remaining on after boot up. Checking the Event Viewer, and here is what is listed:

Faulting application name: Skype.exe, version: 4.1.0.179, time stamp: 0x4acf0be1

Error ID is 1000 which was sent to Windows and nothing came up upon search. It would appear this is a fairly new issue which may need to be considered or investigated. Skype folks, you have my info, feel free to email or contact me if you need more data/information. Hope this helps.

I upgraded to Windows 7, and the latest version of Skype no longer works on my computer. I've tried everything, including reinstalling, as well as searching for updates. I've tried updating all my drivers, and still, Skype will either not connect to the internet (that I do have, since I can load webpages and things) or it will drop a video call after only a couple of minutes.
Is Skype working on a fix for this? Is this a common problem? Or is there something I can do?

These problems on 90 % is a network problems.
Try this.
1. Update firmware of yours ADSL/Cable/WiFi equipment.
2. In the network card properties take off IPv6 protocol. Also set IPv4 address to static and specify DNS addresses.
3. In Skype disable UPnP (Tools-Options-Advanced-Connection)
4. Before start Skype execute a command ipconfig/renew

I have uninstalled/installed Skype countless times...I have the same problem as many above...I initiate a call, my recipient can see me calling but can't answer and I can't end the call from my end so I have continuous ringing until I stop the process in task manager.

If so many of us have the same problem, why won't Skype and/or logitech at least acknowledge the flaw and release a fix. With the amount they have spent on lawyers this last year you'd think they would be able to cough up a few dollars to have someone write the code to fix this. Come on Skype...Get your act together!

If someone has found a good solution to this problem..please share. Thanks.

markokaz87 commented Tuesday, Dec 29

Message: "Skype 4.1 is certified as being compatible with Windows 7" is dated October 22, which is now two months ago and this claimed "compatibility" still seems up in the air. Unfortunately, like 90% of Windows 7 users I am also facing similar issues:

1. Skype would start normally when I turn on my computer , run for 5 minutes and then just freeze. This happens in the middle of text chat, without even using audio/video.
2. I can not minimize or close skype to the taskbar?! I can minimize it in the full screen on the left side (browser style) but not minimize completely to the taskbar as all other programs.
3. If I restart the program after it freezes it wouldn't let me sign in again. I receive "already signed on this computer" message even though I kill skype.exe process in task manager. Only option is to restart the whole computer and use skype for 5 more minutes.
I tried all the previous versions including beta 4.2. Skype and Windows 7 are not even sympathetic to each other, let alone harmonious...

Webcam working perfectly with Vista & Skype, but now having installed 4.1 in W7, find that iTunes won't open, and Internet Explorer freezes necessitating the use of Task Manager and re-booting to resolve. Why won't Skype come out and acknowledge there is a problem? I'm getting out of Skype, and going to try alternatives. SKYPE - why don't you properly test software before issuing? NOT GOOD ENOUGH - from a very disgruntled user.

castlemarc commented Wednesday, Jan 6

dikshitcelur, I had numerous problems with the 4.1 released version and the 4.2 beta version with a brand new laptop running Windows 7. The 4.x versions just are not compatible with Windows 7 or Windows Vista 64bit, no matter what anybody from SKYPE says. I deleted 4.2 beta from the laptop completely, directory structure and registry keys, then downloaded and installed 3.6 Skype and it seems to work 95% of the time. It will still make an occasional crash, but it will boot right back up no problem. THAT'S the only solution for the problem you're having until the new owners of SKYPE rework the software completely. Good luck.

Everbody having trouble running Skype with Windows 7 or Vista 64 bit... I am having very little trouble running version 3.6 on Windows 7. I highly recommend this solution rather than struggling with 4.1 or 4.2 beta. Why even try, when Skype version 3.6 works fine.

neiltravers0 commented Wednesday, Jan 6

I'm also having trouble with Skype 4.1.0.179 and Windows 7 (home premium) on a brand new machine. Skype freezes and refuses to do anything. At the moment it locks up after starting but before logging in. So it continually (30mins+) shows the trying to login symbol in the status/mood area.

But I was getting the behaviour someone else mentioned - locking up mid chat showing outgoing messages as waiting to send and one participant as writing a message (which is never finished). I checked via another machine and the chat was continuing without me and there were further chat messages I should have seen and my messages had not gone out. The machine itself did have internet access on other apps.

I have also tried 4.2 beta, but that won't even start up properly on my machine (it did on the old XP one). The process is in the task manager list, but it is not mentioned on the applications list (though it is in the system tray).

toshimitsu435 commented Wednesday, Jan 6

I was also having trouble running Skype 4.1 with Windows 7. In my case, I was able to log in right after I installed Skype but when I called Test Service(or anyone for that matter), the phone kept ringing and I could not turn that off. So I had to shut down my computer to stop the annoying ring.

I wasn't able to log in after restarting my computer. So I installed Skype again and logged in. But this time I played with the microphone, speakers, and ringing settings from
Tools > Options > General
and somehow that fixed my Skype.

I still don't know what actually fixed the problem but I am happy Skype is working now. Maybe my Logicool webcam wasn't communicating well with Skype and I had to make Skype recognize it.

I hope this will help you out.

Raul Liive commented Saturday, Jan 9

In case you have problems with Skype then please do following.

As first thing please upgrade to Skype 4.2 beta version and see if the issue is still there.

In case the problem is with connections and sending/receiving communications then please check your security software configuration and see if Skype is enabled there. Skype needs to have server rights.

IF the problem is with audio/video calling then first step should be to update all your drivers to latest.

If these tips do not help then please report the issue on our public issue tracker.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I loaded all versions of Skype and as soon as I try to communicate with anyone or use the echo/sound test service the computer freezes immediately. I have to do a hard reset. It happens within 5 to 10 seconds. My computer was a fresh install and everything is up to date. My drivers are all working great.

I am just stumped on how some people get it to work with Win 7 64 bit and others have no luck. Help!!!

Hi,

I've got a 13" Macbook Pro and install a Windows7 on it as well.
I don't know why I can't use mic there. the mic is working and all the tests shows it's ok but in skype doesn't work. it works in Mac perfectly but not in Windows7.
I'd really appreciate it if anyone has got a clue?!

I bought a brand new Gateway desktop 3 days ago, Windows 7, all worked perfectly. Yesterday I installed Skype. It worked. Today Windows 7 would not start up properly. Control/Alt/Delete 3 times from a black screen. When Windows finally did start, Norton Internet Security was gone entirely and Internet Explorer would not start up. Skype did start up. Several additional restarts later, I uninstalled Skype 4.1 but noticed that Skype had apparently installed some other program on the computer called "Skype Web Features". It indicated it was installed today, but I did not install anything today! That little item refuses to uninstall, hangs up every time I try. Skype 4.1 is gone, but IE still will not open, and my Norton program is gone too. I am posting this from my old notebook because the desktop has apparently been rendered useless on the web by Skype. How can I fix the desktop now? I cannot connect to the web to download anything, such as the suggested Beta version! I am unhappy about this. Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Steve Hake

dbatesbc commented Monday, Jan 11

To Steve Hake
Is this a new Gateway "One"? I had similar issues, and Skype was not even installed yet. I restored the Hard drive back to Factory and it has been working for 4 weeks. I installed Skype 4.1 after restoring and I have noticed a few stop/blue screens. I just uninstalled Skype to see if the issue comes up again this week. If it does, then I will know it is not Skype related.

Skype 4.1.079 installed on a brand new 64bit Win7 machine with Quad Core Athlon and an ATI 4850 graphics card (with Catalyst v9 drivers), with a Microsoft LifeCam VX3000 camera and 8mbps broadband. All latest drivers freshly downloaded off Microsoft.

Skype is currently completely unusable. Firstly it forgets the audio and video settings every time it switches on. Secondly, audio quality is choppy at best. Thirdly and worst, the video does not work at all. The camera input freezes and then crashes the video drivers. Incoming video also does not work

All VoIP application as affected, therefore also Skype. Hotfix should come out soon, however not ETA.

Ok, I used to be a huge fan of Skype. It's so much better than yahoo options, it has this feature and this feature, beautiful connection quality, nearly no dropped calls...yadda yadda yadda. THEN, Skype started freezing up and wouldn't make video calls. I complained, they hooked me up with a link to the 4.2 beta. Yay! Then I got my Alienware m15x with Windows 7 Ultimate. You'd think Skype would run just as good on it, right? WRONG. After spending nearly an hour trying to convince it to install and login, all I got from it for a full day was crap. Here's a list of things that happened, most of which happened frequently (10-20 times, no joke).

- Login button did nothing: You click the button to login, it ignores you.

- User already logged on through this computer: This was interesting since it had just booted me out and I had completely rebooted Skype.

- Skype refused to load: Hit the link to start the app, got a grayed out icon in the system tray.....that's it. It never moved again.

Now, I'm sure there were other fun little logon issues that I can't remember at the moment but these were my top 3. Now, during the few times it DID log in...

- Connection quality low: This happened a LOT, despite the fact that I'm running one of the best routers available on a cable broadband connection and connected through a beast of a laptop.

- User disconnected: Interestingly enough, anyone I talked to somehow appeared to log on and off repeatedly (like every 2 minutes). Most of my attempted calls never went through because the user suddenly logged off. They said I was the one vanishing, though my connection was constant and Skype never showed any signs of it.

- Camera restart: Always fun to be playing with the settings and have the camera turn on and off...and on and off...and on and off.

- No sound from other person: My friend eventually fixed this somehow on her end but she had the same version running Vista and it seemed to pop up repeatedly.

- Delayed messages: This was TRULY frustrating! I would write a couple lines, it would put the little spinning circle icon next to them saying they hadn't been delivered yet....and they would sit there. Then suddenly, 5-10 minutes later they would go through and I'd get multiple messages from the other person who had assumed I fell asleep, left, or went afk due to the fact I hadn't responded in over 10-15 minutes. It went vice versa too since I didn't get their messages till Skype decided to pull its virtual head out of its butt.

Altogether, these were more than enough to convince me to completely uninstall Skype until their dev team can get the laundry list of bugs out. However, the granddaddy error of them all only happened once and it blew my mind. Check this out:

- Incoming call froze laptop: No, this is no joke. My friend sent a video call, I hit accept, the laptop froze. No mouse pointer movement, no whitened screen saying program not responding, no BSoD, no CPU or RAM activity, nothing. I hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, nothing happened. I hit the power button, nothing happened. I hit every button ON my laptop in every configuration I could think of, nothing happened. I HAD TO UNPLUG THE POWER CORD THEN POP OUT THE BATTERY MANUALLY TO GET IT TO RESTART. This is the new Alienware m15x people. Brand new from the factory, less than a day old, no other issues until now, Norton 360 3.0 installed, Core i7 2.8GHz CPU w/6MB cache, 6GB 1333 DDR3 RAM, 500GB SATAII HDD, 1GB nVidia 260M graphics chip. Explain to me how an incoming call LOCKS THAT UP.

So all in all, I have come to the conclusion that, despite a plethora of great features and constant updates, all of the bugs make Skype pure junk. When someone can explain how one little program at a 4.2 update level can have that many bugs, even to a system-crashing scale, I MIGHT consider listening to them when they say they have a way to fix it. Until then, I'm searching for a new program.

I have recently got my mother set up on Skype 4.1 on a new Toshiba Satellite L500 Notebook running Windows 7. She is using a mobile broadband service. Skype is working perfectly however when she starts up Windows Live Mail, Skype drops the call. It's almost like Windows Live Mail is taking broadband priority and killing Skype.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue?

Hello, ( especially to binodabraham above's post). I just purchased a new gateway box with OS Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit with SP1, which was upgraded to Windows-7 by the retailer. My audio works fine on the box, but not with Skype 4.1.0.179 (latest download). I have just spent the last 6 hrs of work time, (yesterday and today) trying to solve the audio problem. I went through all the recommended skype trouble shooting steps, and read/glanced thru about 50 to 75 message board threads on the web at large with similar topic subject lines. Yes I have the right drivers installed; yes my speaker settings are correct, and so on, on and on...

I have meanwhile chatted to 2 other users of Win-7 who have no problems with audio on skype, works for them. BTW, i have Norton Internet Security suite installed. I just wanted to say, you are not alone, if you are having a similar problem. I can only hope when i find the solution, it will be 'operator error', and something i did or did not do. I'll report back if i solve the problem..

Hopefully this will help some. Now skype works flawlessly for me on Windows 7. I couldn't get Skype to work on 7 when I went into the skype settings it did not default to my video camera or camera microphone, instead it defaulted to my video inputs and microphone inputs on my computer. If you have a computer with these types of hardware it could be your problem. Follow the steps below or go to the microsoft website link below.

Skype
If you have problems when you use your LifeCam device in Skype, you may have to configure the audio and video setting in Skype. To do this, follow these steps:

1.) Start Skype.
2.) On the Tools menu, click Options.
3.) In the navigation pane of the Skype Options window, click Audio Settings.
4.) Select your LifeCam device as the default microphone. For example, select Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000.
5.) In the navigation pane of the Skype Options window, click Video Settings.
6.) Select your LifeCam device as the default Webcam. For example, select Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000.
7.) Click Save.
8.) Test LifeCam by making a Skype test call.

Hi everybody,

I am running SKYPE v4.1.0.179 on Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit OS and I´m really glad, that skype is Win 7 certified and compatible, but as we can see, it isn´t true! :o\

Skype causes me still the same problem with Internet Explorer and I´m not the only one... crashes due to SkypeIEPlugin.dll and after a few months it really pisses me of cause there´s no newer update and fix by Skype for these issues.

steve.petrille commented Saturday, Jan 30

Guys, I don't believe your issues are a result of skype. Skype works fine on my windows 7 64 bit and I use internet explorer as well. Your issues sound more related to potential infections. Make sure you have done a scan and your antivirus is up to date. I also recommend you get another antivirus to run a scan on your machine. Despite what you may believe no antivirus catches all viruses. If any of you use Nortons I suggest you stop, 30% of internet connection issues I come across are a direct result of Nortons anti-virus. Avast is great antivirus and is free (home use only). You can also buy a more robust version, that is your choice, it is very competitive/cheap if you buy the multi year license(http://www.avast.com/index). I use the free and have no issues. For a supplemental anti-virus to run adhoc Malwarebytes is great (http://www.malwarebytes.org/). Malwarebytes is free as well to run adhoc. Be careful when downloading any of these, they do direct you to Cnet for the download and there are a lot of advertisements that have downloads. Make sure you are downloading Malwarebytes or Avast. If you download and run and it tells you you can only fix a few of your issues with the free version you did not download Malwarebytes, you probably downloaded a gimick registry cleaner. Once you have ensured your machine is clean and you have all your microsoft updates applied (very important). Do not just apply important updates, look at the optional updates available in windows update and if there are hardware updates (especially for your webcam) available apply them as well. If you continue to have issues after all this I would unistall and reinstall skpe and maybe even your webcam software.

Hope this helps.

Here's another data-point:

Summary: Skype 4.1 *DOES* work with Windows 7 (at least the 32 bit version), however I suspect that the problems being experienced are related to the webcam drivers and their interaction with skype.

I have a (relatively) lame system that I used to run WinXP on and it ran like a Thing Of Beauty! I popped in a new hard drive, and did a bare-metal install of Windows 7 (professional) on it.

My system is a 2Ghz Athlon XP with 2 gigs of memory
My video card is an NVIDIA 7800 series video card.
I have an ASUS MoBo with a Via chipset.
I have an el-cheapo SIIG sound card that I bought specifically for Windows 7.
I have installed M$ Office 2003, Open Office, Corel WordPerfect, Quicken Premier 2010, iTunes, Winamp, Avira Personal AV, and one or two other sundry things.
I have scanned my machine repeatedly - both within Windows, and externally via Avira's "Rescue CD" - and my system comes up clean-as-a-wistle.
AdAware also gives my machine a clean bill-of-health.

My machine is a member of a domain that is controlled by a Windows 2000 server.

I am an administrator both on the local machine and on the domain using my current login credentials.

I have insured that there are no orphaned processes within the task manager.

I have UAC turned on. (I did not disable it)

I have fully updated Windows 7 to the latest-and-greatest updates.
(a) I have NOT installed Silverlight.
(b) I have NOT installed Windows Live Essentials.
(c) I have NOT installed "Smart Card Cryptographic" updates.
(d) I have installed PowerShell
(e) I have installed the global policy updates on both this machine and my domain controller.
(f) The (current) domain global policies are pretty liberal - I do not impose much of anything via global policy. A real corporate domain would have them locked down much more tightly than I have.

I am running Skype 4.1.somthing

I used to have a Vivitar ViviCam-35 installed as my web-cam.
This is a REALLY LAME web cam that I picked up at Christmas Tree Shops for - I think - maybe as much as $9. Video resolution maxes out at 320x240 or something like that - and the frame-rate was abysmal. But! It worked like a champ with Skype on WinXP (professional), Vista, and now Windows 7. I have made and received video calls that worked flawlessly for - literally - hours at a time - both from here in the US and when I was abroad in Russia.

I decided to upgrade the web-cam to a Microsoft LifeCam Cinema so that I'd get better video - and if it worked well, I'd buy a 2nd one to take with me the next time I visit the grandkids. (The son and daughter-in-law also have a horridly lame web-cam too.)

I installed the LifeCam drivers and *DID NOT* allow it to install the "Windows Live Essentials" crap that M$ has been trying to ram down our throats (along with the useless as *****'s on a boar-hog "Silverlight" stuff).

I ran the LifeCam setup program and configured the camera for 340x280 (?) resolution as that gave a reasonable picture size with a decent picture at a reasonable frame rate.

I closed the LifeCam software and launched Skype.

I noticed the following:

1. If I simply start skype, it works fine to make a non-video test call to Skype's echo-test.
2. I can do whatever I want, so long as I don't go to the Video settings tab under "Options"
3. If I go to the video settings tab, I get no, repeat, ZERO video. However Skype still does not crash.
4. If, and ONLY if, I go from video to audio settings does Skype crash.
4a: I can go to audio settings and do whatever I want, just so long as I have not gone to Video settings first.
4b: However, if I go to video settings, pause there for a moment or two, and then go directly to audio settings, Skype crashes - and the program crash dialog I get in Windows 7 provides the following information:

Conclusion:

I believe that there is something very, very, wrong with the association between Skype and the newer - high-end - web-cam drivers.

I would humbly suggest that the folks at Skype take a look at these crash-dumps, get themselves a Microsoft LiveCam (et. al.), and try to reproduce this for themselves.

What say ye?

Another data point:

Updated to 4.2 (4.2.0.141) as suggested. Noted the following results. . .

Program: Skype 4.2 beta
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional (32 bit)
System: 2.0Ghz Athlon XP with 2 gig RAM
Skype was installed *without* Chrome.

Issue:
Using a Microsoft LiveCam Cinema there is no video. (i.e. solid black rectangle where the video should be)

Issue:
(same setup)
The video control buttons for actually setting up the video camera that normally appear directly below the video frame do not appear.

Issue: (same setup)
If the webcam is disconnected from the USB port with the video setup pane open, I have experienced program crashes. Note that this does not happen all the time, but I have seen this on a couple of occasions. I will continue to investigate and see if I can generate a more repeatable failure mode.

SOLUTION TO PROBLEM!

Hey, everybody! I figured out a way to solve these annoying problems with newer web-cams, skype, and Windows 7.

These are the steps I followed to get everything working:

1. Disconnect any webcam(s) you have connected.

2. Download and install Skype 4.2 Beta:
http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/windows/beta/

Note that I did not try this with the previous 4.1 "released" version, so I cannot say if it works there or not - however I suspect strongly that it will.

3. UNINSTALL any webcam drivers / software that you may have installed previously. Verify that all files and directories are removed.

4. Reboot your machine.

5. Attach the web-cam *WITHOUT* pre-installing the supplied drivers.

Expected result: The web-cam is recognized, all functionality is enabled, and it works like a charm.

6. Launch Skype and re-configure audio and video settings as appropriate.

Expected Results: Skype recognizes the web cam, video works fine, and it does NOT crash!

7. Enjoy Skype with your new web-cam!

Notes:

You will not have access to the advanced functionality or fancy effects the manufacturers drivers/software supply.

You will get some "default" resolution - perhaps lower than you wanted, though possibly the "best" resolution your system and video card can provide while maintaining some kind of reasonable frame-rate.

I have tested this fix with two different web-cams, and it worked for both:
1. Microsoft LifeCam Cinema
2. Phillips Webcam SPC-1300NC

Comments to developers and end-users:
I suspect that the issue here is not, repeat *NOT* with Skype. Rather I suspect an incompatability between Windows 7 and the webcam software.

Since it is apparent that Windows 7 has webcam support for these later webcams built-in - (My ViviCam 35 was way too old and crummy, and needed drivers) - I suspect that when the updated software is installed the native drivers do not disengage. I don't know if Windows is responsible for that, or the driver installer, but what you end up with is a situation where two different drivers are both active for the same piece of hardware at the same time. And it has been my experience that driver clashes of this kind are the fast-track to hell and a crashed system.

Once you remove the added driver/software, the original native drivers have un-hindered access to the device, and it works like a charm!

What is needed now is for the driver manufacturers and Windows to get their heads together and fix this problem since it really stinks to spend almost a hundred dollars for a top-end web-cam and get the functionality of a $10 web-cam.

Yelling at Skype is not going to help things because their software is working as designed - it's the idiot drivers that are causing all the problems!

What say ye?

I have just recently upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista. Since then I have had major issues using skype. In most cases I can hear the person on the other end, however, they have a very difficult time hearing me and say I keep cutting in and out. I never had any issues before the upgrade. Was wondering if there are any solutions to this problem.

mmetosca commented Tuesday, Feb 9

New PC. Windows 7 64 bit. Skype 4.1 Calls to landlines ring. The other person answers & can't hear me and I still hear ringing. Skype won't hang up. The only way out is ctrl alt delete.

Skype also frequently freezes after it has been on for awhile so that I can't even click on any contacts. Then the OS hangs.

Solutions?

morrisberg commented Monday, Feb 15

I have had problems with Skype 3.8 under XP (microphone level too low) and have had new PC with Win 7 (32 bit) since December. Tried 3.8 (won't install), 4.1 and 4.2 beta. In 4.1/4.2 when I call a landline the other party's voice always breaks up, even though Skype tells me the Internet speed is OK (and I never had this problem before version 4). The Skype call test is always OK except for the first few seconds when the Skype voice breaks up, then it's OK. I am having to forget Skype for overseas calls and the credit I had is now useless. For overseas calls from UK I use the landline and Planet Numbers instead. I don't use a webcam, and have tried closing my browser etc., to no avail. I have various headsets/mikes so the problem is not there. I use Avast antivirus.

There are so many problems being reported - please do not ignore the issue. Something is wrong with Skype 4. At the moment all I can use Skype for is chat and it looks as though my credit will go down the drain.

socratesmaura commented Wednesday, Feb 17

This is a recent development. When receive a call, Skype keeps ringing even when I answer and does not open a video or audio for communications. It just hangs and keeps ringing, the ringing continues even after I forcibly quit Skype. I must restart the computer to go back to normal. I have reinstalled Skype and the issue continues. Windows 7 x64.

I have been, for the last couple hours, following forums to try and figure out what the hell is going on with windows 7 and skype - the ONLY way I was able to install skype was to dig up my old hard drive and use the installed progam on it - I tried mozilla, i changed my cashe - I did everything - there is a major problem with skype for windows 7 - and I use linux!

now if anyone can tell me how to figure out my DU@Lphone compatablilty issues it would be very much appreciated..

When I start Skype on my PC(With Windows 7x64) it bugs my hard drive - I opened the Task manager -> Performance -> Resource monitor and on the disk section it shows me that Skype is opened about 100 times. This makes the PC to bug until Skype is closed. I am using the Skype 4.1.0.179. I reinstalled the OS 2 times - same problem. Used different software to search problems in the hard disk - none.
Please show me some kind of solution.

In technical info of the call i cant see any difference/ I have installed k-lite codec pack

Same as others...I bought yesterday a cordless Phone Philips VOIP 321 in order to use it for Skype phone calls instead of the USB or plug headsets.

However, it does not work on HP Notebooks. I was trying to follow the advcies from several sites (uninstalling Skype and VOIP softwares) but nothing works.
I do agree with one comment, the installation must be simple, not so complicated as it is recommended in the brochures (without contradictions). Just a program that we can "Run" and the hardware with the software are easily connected. Adding also the reply from the someone in October 2009 when Windows 7 was not even released is totally unhelpful, without added value and creating more confusion. Please, review it.

Kind regards

Skype 4.1 on my brand new Dell XPS under Windows 7 has been a disaster. No matter what I do (install, uninstall, etc.) the program will not work with any consistency whatsoever. Failures range from no sound, to the program not making any calls and freezing, to the program not starting. I will not use the program anymore because it has wasted so much of my time. FIX IT AND STOP TELLING US IT IS "CERTIFIED". Whatever "certified" means, it is irrelevant because the program simply does not work, "certified" or not!

New skype 4.2 is no good for windows7... it freezes my computer and keeps ringing that it wont stop till i forcefully shut my computer off. I thought bugs are already fixed.. how come its worst than before?

theb.a.x commented Monday, Mar 1

I have been having problems with windows 7 and skype (the latest version) for about a week and a half now. I did virus scans and worked endlessly to try to come up with a solution. Finally, I think I have a solution. Windows 7 comes with a lot of features that I decided that I wanted disabled when my computer starts up. I wanted to run 60 processes as opposed to 80. What I did was I changed my settings in "msconfig" from my customized start up to normal start up and it changed everything. My picture quality is good, sound is good and the annoying connectivity issues with skype just not working properly (I'm talking about unsent ims and grey circles) has gone away. To anyone who has an hp laptop with windows 64 bit I would suggest that you keep the startup settings on normal. I dont know exactly why this changes things but it does. I know most of us hate long start up times but its not much longer. So that is the trade off: longer start up times over not having the functionality of Skype. You choose.

I also am on Widows 7 Prof. and Skype is not working correctly. I am using a microcam. All test show that everything is fine...but when I call someone, my voice is choppy, and the person on the other end cannot hear me. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all, as well as have done several things mentioned on this post. Nothing has worked. I am almost ready to give up. Has anyone found an answer??? On my other computer with Vista, all is fine.

Obviously, the latest release of Skype on Windows 7 is NOT ready for primetime, to put it kindly.

I have three PCs running Windows 7 Home Premium. My main computer running on 64bit, is having no problems. The other two (one pinetrail netbook 32bit and one htpc 64bit) are showing the endless ringtone bug with a Logitech C600 camera attached. I did not test it without the camera, but voice only calls with the camera connected do not work either. Strange thing is, it works with some contacts sometimes and it does not matter if they are running Win7, WinXP or Linux.

PROBLEMS SOLVED!
Have an Acer 3810T with Windows 7 Home Premium. Had the same problems as many where my laptop would freeze and I attributed it to Skype. I reformatted my drive (lost all of the pre-installed Acer applications in the process). Did not help. I uninstalled all applications and reinstalled them one by one, observing fist before installing another application. Still had the freezing. Finally brought my laptop to Acer, they installed the latest BIOS and now, everything works like a charm - including Skype 4.2 (with camera even). Boot up time is under 1 minute. Hope this helps.

theb.a.x commented Monday, Mar 15

Well, it doesn't because why should we "the consumers" have to reformat our computers for one program like skype. I've been reading up on this windows 7 issue and maybe they should come out with a new version for 64 bit too. They have had problems since last year with this issue of crashing, ect. Its bad it needs to be corrected.

theb.a.x commented Tuesday, Mar 16

If flashing the bios is what does the trick you can do that by downloading an update. I flashed my bios for my hp laptop running windows 7 64 bit. I dont know if it will do the trick but skype connected a lot faster after I flashed my bios.

hp has laptop updates here:

I tried to work around this issue by creating a new Skype Account with a new Skype Name (using valid characters only), but I always get an error message saying it contained invalid characters

Why can't I sign in using Windows 7? Is the issue linked to the invalid character issue? I've tried a clean reinstall using Revo to uninstall everything (incl 60 registry keys) but no joy.

I think this is the probably the closest I've ever been to flaming... Honestly, the new "improved" features that cannot be turned off are as annoying as Microsoft's MSN's, which caused me to stop using it. I would really like to be able to just minimize skype back to the system tray like before (or notification area as microsoft now calls it...). Having skype take my workspace to show me ifo I don't want to know is driving me insane. Otherwise, skype is a great software. It's really an annoyance, nothing more. But forcing it like this is so in the "microsoft" modus-operandi it's been disappointing.

I bought a new quad processor computer with 32 bit Windows 7. It was fine, no problems. I installed Skype 4.1 to hook up with my family in N.Z., and bitterly regret it. Skype would not recognise my microphone, crashes I.E.and will not completely uninstall. I am faced with the prospect of re-formatting the hard drive to get rid of this. Skype in its present form is not compatible with Win7. Install at your peril.

I am having problems with Skype at 64-bit Windows 7. From time to time, my messages do not go away. There appears a moving round icon next to the time of the message. That time freezes and does not change if I send other messages (which don't go away either). At the same time, I have a weird looking Skype icon on my task bar - a regular green spot with a white check mark with a "1" (standing for one message) on the orange background. But unlike its normal appearance, the orange background with a "1" is shifted to the top.

I need to reboot a computer to get rid of the problem. Using Task Manager does not help. Very, very irritating. Happens every day.

copied from a much earlier post, i am having same issues. very frustrating.

"I upgraded my Windows Vista to Windows 7 and Skype isn't working. It works for a few minutes and then it stops. It almost "freezes" saying that it's processing my message, but it never does and then I can't get back on Skype once I sign out. Skype comes up but will not connect to caller. When I call it rings but will not respond to caller. Just keeps ringing. I have to go to task manager to force skype to close and stop ringing."

it also affects my dvd/cd drive and my computer's ability to recognize the disc and play it.... sometimes it will play but gets about 8 seconds of choppiness into the previews before it totally freezes and i have to hard shut down the player to correct itself.

it also makes my firefox v5.0 freeze and crash as well and then it can't recover - doesn't allow me to get past pop-up windows to report the crash whether i want to restore tabs or start anew - it just keeps throwing me the same window.

i've uninstalled and reinstalled Skype about 4 times thinking it was something with windows 7 but as soon as it's off my computer everything else goes back to working properly.

what is going on?! where is the fix?!

stigwood commented Wednesday, Apr 28

"APPCRASH" ?
Skype crashed immediately after launching the program.
I asked myself why just now? Since it worked before...
I then remembered that I had installed a new Bluetooth USB dongle to make the system communicate with my new Nokia Bluetooth headset. It is strange that Skype did not crash just after I installed the bluetooth USB dongle but the week after...
I even used the Bluetooth telephone headset to make a Skype call and it worked great.

Anyway, I just wanted to try to do "something" so unplugged the Bluetooth USB dongle and restarted Skype. Voila, Skype runs as nice as it used to!

Next step... :) I just had to try the Bluetooth again. I have 3 different Bluetooth USB dongles and I connected the X-Micro XBT DG2G. (The one I used when it worked OK).
Skype started perfectly and even found the Bluetooth equipment and suggested to use it. Very good!

The reason for your problem with Skype can be different than mine but try to unplug something that might cause Skype to crash.
Especially caused by communication devices.

Just wanted to share my experience that solved my problem with Skype and hopefully will this help you or somebody out there :)

I am also having the same sound problem. I have Sony Vaio VGN series with windows 7 64-bit using Skype 4.2. When I receive a notification in Skype Chat with headphones on, all sound gets redirected to my system's on board speakers, including the Skype notification noise, regardless of my headphones. This is really annoying for some cases. One of my Friends Dell has also experiencing the same problem.

I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 1545 with Windows Home Premium 64-bit, and I'm having exactly the same problems as many other people with latest version of Skype, eg:

Windows 7 running on a Dell Inspiron. Calls can be initiated but cannot be answered. Caller sees connection drop but windows 7 and skype 4.x continues to ring. Only way out is to kill skype with task manager or reboot. Skype sometimes works after reboot, other times not. Solution?

psteiner2356 commented Monday, Nov 23

I'm having same issues as the other users and Windows 7. Skype will work for a few mins and then stop. Only task manager will close out the program. Also, skype will say that I'm signed it and will not even let me log on, even though I'm not connected. Solutions?!

I upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7. Skype had been working ok but now i realize that i can't hear any alert sounds, i can't hear anything when I call out and the other person can't hear me but i can hear and see them fine. I have a webcame/microphone built into my laptop and have tried everything to get this to work. Both my cam and mic work in windows messenger chat but not on skype. When I go into my sound options in the tools section on skype and select play this sound i get a sound playback error stating that playback was not supported. I have the latest version of skype(4.2.0.163) so i'm not sure what is happening. Someone please help.

I downloades Skype yesterday onto a new computer with Windows 7. I call my husband's skype every day and it tranfers to his phone when he is at work. This has worked well always, but now, with the new Skype on Windows 7, the call gets interrupted immediately after my husband answers and the systems says that Skype stopped working but it cannot find the problem. Is this because of some incompatibility with Windows 7? Please help.... I am on the other side of the world from my husband and Skype is the best way for us to stay connected!!

geoff.weir commented Saturday, May 15

Well I've just installed Skype Version 5.0.0.105, and I still can't sign in. I've still got the same problem I reported on 20th March ie
"I have a Dell Studio XPS with W7 Professional 64 bit. I can sign here on this blog, I can sign in on my Dell in XP mode, but when I try and sign in in W7 mode I get an error message saying "your Skype Name and password were not recognized. Please check and try again". I tried to work around this issue by creating a new Skype Account with a new Skype Name (using valid characters only), but I always get an error message saying it contained invalid characters
Why can't I sign in using Windows 7? Is the issue linked to the invalid character issue? I've tried a clean reinstall using Revo to uninstall everything (incl 60 registry keys) but no joy."
Am I the only person with this problem? Skype suppport couldn't provide an answer, even though I sent them a log file.

rangergary commented Wednesday, May 19

I couldn't get Skype to close out using Win 7; went to tools/advanced options and cleared option for keeping signed in and that solved the problem.

richardhartley2 commented Tuesday, Jun 22

I can't vouch for Windows 7, but Skype 4.2.0.169 is NOT compatible with Vista. During skypeout phone calls I'm getting an access violation read of address skype.exe error that other posters have complained about. When this occurs Skype goes gray and appears to crash but the phone calls are still connected. Audio quality has not improved, calls are choppy and with lots of echo and about the same number of dropped calls as before. Still waiting for newer versions for my Linux box. Linux is still on version 2 beta but it's much more stable.

richardhartley2 commented Tuesday, Jun 22

Additionally, Skype 4 frequently crashes explorer when trying to load at Vista boot up. I have to wait 5 or 10 minutes after turning on my laptop and then start Skype manually.

jbritko commented Thursday, Jun 24

I have to join the group of people having problems with Skype 4.2 on Win 7 64bit.

I have Dell Studio 1747 with Win 7 Home Premium 64. Skype starts OK and then after few minutes stops working. Messages can't be sent (it can be closed normally however) and if it's left running for few more minutes it freezes completely and has to be terminated using task manager. What's worse, it messes up sounds. After Skype is closed or terminated I can't use any app that uses sound (eg. Winamp) otherwise the app freezes too. Even the sound settings in control panel. System sounds don't work either. The only cure is to reboot and then not starting Skype.

davidparks21 commented Thursday, Jun 24

I'm running an alienware Win 7 64bit, same problem as jbritko describes, messages fail to go through the UI just stops responding to anything, and I have to reboot all the time just to use skype for a little while.

I also tried the beta version, same problems. I sure wish skype was more responsive to user problems, they've always hid behind a wall of "we don't want to see, hear from, or know our users"

Maybe it is time to make the leap, give up the skype number and get on to google.

erab81 commented Sunday, Jun 27

skype and windows 7 64bit don't work...it get connection errors, and the same exact setup works on my 3sbit laptop with trillian, but not on my 64 bit system...

skype will be up and running, and i'll send a message, and i'll get that circular hour glass, and it won't send

Skype ( 4.2.0.169) on Windows 7 has problem with sound if Logitech Webcam (perhaps other external sound devices as well) has been already plugged before Skype starts. This cannot be corrected without restarting the system. The system doesn't play anymore before the system is restarted. Please help.

I love Skype and have used all over the world since the beginning. It boggles my mind how you Skype folks could take such a great product and make it so small so unfriendly. Now comes Windows 7 and we can't even use the great 3.8 and prior.
For heavens sake don't you know when you have a good thing.
WE DO!
PLEASE FIX IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Skype 4.2 also here not working in Windows 7 (64 bit). Starts and shows the icon in the taskbar, but refuses to open a window, also refuses to close (I have to stop the process) and it does not accept incoming messages. It worked however in the passed, so I suppose some incompatibility with another program or with a Windows update. I can open Skype without problem from virtual XP within Windows 7 and from another PC with Vista using the same connection.

Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit, Clone Desktop, Intel Core2Duo 2.53ghz, 4gb RAM, Realtek High Def Audio, Skype ver 4.2.0.169.

Skype will work for about the first 2 to 3minutes and then goes away completely.
Sometimes restarting Skype works or will have to do a FULL Reboot of the system.
It works just fine on my WinXPpro system. I'm so Fed up with this if Skype doesn't do something soon to fix this im going to JUNK it.

I should have said its the Mic Audio that goes away! and not the whole program. I can still receive. Even changed out the Headset w/ Boom Mic.

How do I get the icon on the taskbar to be SMALLER? I don't want the wide Skype tab even when I've closed Skype. Windows 7 SUCKS! *sorry for the childishness but I'm so frustrated!I can't find where on skype to ask it to delete from the taskbar. I will uninstall I guess. I hoped someone would have answered erab81 by now!

21 October 2010. Skype 5.xxxx, and windows 7. Problem, sound from mic starts bad and fades away after a few minutes. Is there a cure?

madman_bryon commented Tuesday, Oct 26

I just installed Skype 5.0.0.152 and have noticed that in windows 7 sound mixer that there are two entries for skype. Whats up with that? Also when placing the test call, although my set up indicated that my recording was fine, (green bar about halfway full on voice) I could barely hear the recording it made when played back. Is this common place?

madman_bryon commented Tuesday, Oct 26

karoldouglas: Dont delete it, open the options from the tools menu, then open the advanced section at the bottom, and uncheck keep Skype in the taskbar, while I'm loged in. Then when you close the main window with the red X, it closes to the system tray in windows 7. Still running but no longer on the taskbar. To open it again, hover the system tray arrow, and then double click the Skype Green Checkmark

Maybe I was just lucky but, to add a positive note to this discussion, I just recently bought a new hp 6550 stationary pc on which windows 7 and skype 5.0 were both pre-installed. In addition I bought the cheapest speakers I could find and a cheap webcam with built in microphone which clips onto my screen. Never used skype before; no previous experience of windows 7 - but skype works just fine! Good sound, good picture, no problems at all.

hello everyone,i am a bit of a novice but i felt the need to share.i started having this crashing, and endless ringing precipitating the crashing problem in late September.i had win7 from the beginning and there was never any problem.at the time the latest version of skype was the 4.2.upgrading to the 5.0 didn't solve the problem.on finding this forum and seeing that i was not the only one going through this,i felt i had the duty to share what i have learned from coming to you.on reading the comment by jharris1993,his solution seemed to speak the closest to my issues.on unplugging my logitech communicate deluxe,i proceeded to uninstall the drivers and software.i then made sure that i set the skype to sign in anytime i reboot.then i rebooted, and after the process was complete,i plugged in my camera.on recognising the hardware,my computer prompted me to download the software and drivers;i canceled that request and opened skype instead.so far, that seems to have done the trick.for you tech experts out there ,maybe there is some compatibility problem with the driver updates and 7; which then mucks up the compatibility with skype.i don't know how you would put it,but i am sure that with all of you investigating together,as i have observed, you will come up with a solution.for the mean time,i am back on skype.my gratitude!

cheers!
ceasarntu.

Hi everyone especially skype developers.
As i am mostly addressing them. I have been using from 2-5 skype versions.
I have tried skype 4.x and now i can use on my win7 x64 skype version 5.x and i am really disapointed to use this UI ( 4.x and 5.x versions). It is not user friendly at all. It makes things even complex. I want the 3.x user interface. I am used to it. Since i use skype for many years up to now. I think the option to change UI or use the old UI would be best. But it could be even better to revive version 3.8 on win7 operating systems. 3.8 skype version is the best from all of them. It works as it is supposed to and you can do everything easy not thinking "how to find this? and this? damn can't change this. Can't do this and another. I want that and not THIS". 3.8 skype UI brought everyone what is easy and clear not as 4.x or 5.x skype versions.
