Skype 4.1 hotfix for Windows

Today we have released a new version of Skype for Windows.

We recommend for everyone to update to this build now.

The new release is a bugfix release which resolves many of the problems you have been telling us about.

In this build, links are not clickable in contact authorization requests - it's another way we're tackling spam (and there'll be plenty more improvements like this in future releases). Secondly, we have resolved a full bunch of video issues which managed to sneak into previous builds, so if you had issues with webcam detection by Skype or the video froze from time to time then this build is definitely for you :).
Last but not least we have resolved a issue which made Skype to crash on start-up for people who have really old computers, which did not support SSE technology.

In addition to these fixes we have also updated our web browser plugins and fixed many smaller issues.

In case you see that Skype is not behaving as expected then please let us know about it. Post on our forums for discussing things and file issue reports in our public issue tracker.

Full list of fixes and known issues for the newly released build 4.1.0.166 is here:

Hi, I just upgrade to 4.1.0.166, when signing in it shows "disk i/o error....", please advice, thank you.

darrells commented Friday, Sep 4

I'm a bit disappointed the accessibility issues were too small to mention in the actual blog post. I'm glad the entire list of fixed issues was included though. Accessibility is important my friends. Thank you.

darrells commented Friday, Sep 4

BTW, I'll be interested in seeing if some dialpad keyboard issues were resolved but not included on the list. :)

darrells commented Friday, Sep 4

My apologies for "disappointed" comment. I thought this was someone else's blog about Skype rather than a blog posted by you folks at Skype. Sorry 'bout that.

The accessibility enhancements are definitely appreciated and needed. Please keep them coming. :-)

I have 2 vista machines (desktop and laptop) both have the same issues with poor quality sound and video making skype unusable. until mid august we had no issues with either machine other than the occasional drop out which I put down to bandwidth issues rather than skype issues. the really frustrating thing was the two hours I spent working on the problem today which was followed by a succesful call to Austria which was then truncated by a recurrance of the problem. get your act together guys and sort this asap

Previously using 4.0.x version with Trackercam as the driver for my DV camera. Upgraded to 4.1 and outbound video would freeze. Regression fixed the problem.

Applied this patch. Used direct DV interface instead of Trackercam. Much improved video but outbound video would still freeze after 1-3 minutes. Regression fixed the problem. When everything was working, the experience was enhanced, but the freeze still happened.

mariastanislas commented Tuesday, Sep 15

I was previously using skype version 4.0 with no problems when recently the video would freeze on a call. I upgraded to 4.i and the problem still remains.

NOW I found your Sept 09 fix #3... ERROR 1603!!!!!!! this is a BUNCH OF BALONEY!

janmarbol commented Wednesday, Sep 30

thank goodness I never put any money into it - it drops calls (the few times I made them) and has all kinds of glitches. Bye, SKYPE

janmarbol commented Wednesday, Sep 30

PIECE of crap- your stupid program ruined my camera too now! I cannot use my camera and it won't even let me uninstall my camera and reinstall it, let alone SKYPE- your company is extremely irresponsible for adding people's programs to your crappy program without one's knowledge, that does NOT work, no matter what update you have.

I WILL blog about this so NO ONE adds SKYPE! I am still in the process of fixing programs in my computer because of your irresponsibility and your greed for taking over people's computer programs.

soubirose commented Thursday, Oct 8

so just wonder...
downgrading the version will work perfect for video problem?

I always get "unknown error" for video setting option. hope that old version will fix my problem.

freecallhome1 commented Thursday, Oct 8

Having the same problem with the video freezing, each time right at the 30 second mark. Using two different cameras, one a logitech and the other built into a mini HP 2133 so i don't think it is a camera problem. Audio is great, clear and no delay.

tony.nonte commented Saturday, Oct 10

Yea, My family and I just starting using Skype 4.1.0.166, and all of us are having problems with it freezing the video. Takes about 30sec or so to freeze then it freezes frequently thereafter. My brother and I went back to 3.8, and it DOES NOT freeze there, but the video delay and quality is bad. Any ideas when a new version will be out, OR what version can we go to, to get better quality but eliminate the Freeze??

garyblissett commented Sunday, Oct 18

Really disappointed with this freezing issue. Skype used to be the most reliable. Now looking for alternatives.

stefanolson commented Saturday, Oct 24

I have the same problem with the "unknown error" when trying to display video. Downgraded back to 4.0 and it works fine.

I have same issue as casoli1. On windows 7, skype just rings and rings and call does not connect. When someone calls me, i am unable to accept calls. When I click answer button, nothing happens and it just rings. Even if i quit skype, it keeps ringing until i kill skype.exe from task manager.

My daughter and I have been on Skype for several years. I have Skype 4.1.0.179. Is there ANY WAY to remove the "conversations" tab? My daughter still has 3.5 on her PC for her phone, but I cannot seem to find a way to get it again for my PC. I have unchecked automatic updates so if I do get it, it won't reload this new one again. I just want a plain phone the way I had before. The conversations tab seems to replicate the history list. Any chance of a simple, plain phone interface again?

Windows 7 Installs a driver on it's own for Logitech Wireless Internet Handset but the contact list is not available so I installed the Vista driver and it complained because 1 driver was already accessing it .. then I tried uninstalling the Windows 7 driver to no avail ... In wWindows Xp if I boot up with Windows Messenger running the contact list is not available (disconnected) .... I've tried contactind Logitech ... Skype .... MSN ... Microsoft about it and everyone sends me to the other for a solution ... feels like I'm doing the line dance from Little Whorehouse In Texas

Update ... Logitech Cordless Internet Handset in Windows 7 .... If i disable the windows driver in device manager and set skype not to launch at boot then restart windows ... then start Logetech Cordless Handset software after Windows 7 restarts which launches Skype .... then re-enable the drivers for Logitech Cordless Internet Handset in device manager .... IT WORKS ..... just don't launch Windows Messenger ot you are back to square 1 ... disabling/re-enabling the drivers in the device manager will have to be done before every reboot

I am getting the same message on Windows 7 as dpelliott1947, daddymonster1, and aphmd1. I hesitate to download ANYTHING even though Windows 7 brings me to this page, given the problems I am reading about above. But I can't have Skype shutting down my Windows Internet Explorer on a regular basis either. My daughter is going overseas in 2 months, and Skype will be my only visual contact with her for 4 months -- so I need Skype and my Internet Explorer to work without a glitch. What's the fix, guys? I have yet to see a solution for any of us!

pobox14344 commented Thursday, Nov 19

The posts immediately above keep syaing that they hae v 4.1.0.179. But the download page tells me that this is 4.1.32.179. In view of the widespread problems with Windows 7 systems, Skype should discontinue presenting us with a demand-page saying to upgrade now. Take that out of our way, fix your "issues," and then we will be happy to upgrade. Until then, I am staying with v4.1.32.166.

Skype, with all due respect, what are you all doing?

Not just on Windows 7. I tried to upgrade skype 4.0 to 4.1 on my XP laptop. It comes with fatal error 1603 too. I tried to use manual update, and when I installed it same thing happened. But I think I'm a little bit lucky, because I still have my older version. So, Mr. Skype Developer, please fix that bug before people leave you for good.

cparod commented Friday, Nov 20

Please allow to disable Conversations tab.
I use Skype on multiple computers, and because it does Skype does not know that I've already read the messages on a separate computer, it doesn't scroll the chat window, or mark the conversation as read.
So I have to click on that tab and open the conversation and scroll down, and waste time and enjoyment of my life.

=)

Otherwise, I'm pleased. Also, for Skype on Mac, please allow to delete message history for only selected threads/conversations.

patrickdickey_52761 commented Saturday, Nov 21

For Latinaaa and caprod, if you go into "View" (menu on the main window) and click on Compact View, then it will look like the older 3.5 version.

I'm also on 4.1.0.179, and when I attempted to install the latest version (Windows 7) I received an error. I'm re-downloading it right now, and will try it again.

Using Windows 7 64 bit, Quad Core Q9400, 4 Gig Ram, ATI HD4350 Video. Skype version 4.1. The video freezes constantly on my end - works OK with the XP machine in the house. Had similar issues with Vist 64 bit - but not nearly as bad on the freezing. Windows 7 freezes almost immediately. Call coming from the other end is completely uninterupted - it is fine.

oleego commented Tuesday, Dec 1

I got the same problem but found a solution for the time.
You can turn off the Skype-AddOn for the Internet-Explorer.
Just open Internet-Explorer, go to Extras -> Add-Ons and deactivate the Skype-AddOn.
I hope this helps you.

using windows 7 64 on this machine and 32 on desktop.
Never encountered problem until yesterday. Call connects and within seconds a window appears and says "Skype has stopped working".
I have tried to uninstall, reboot, install... to no avail.
I have suspended the firewall and the antivirus... to no avail.
This is now happening on both machines (32 & 64 both windows 7)
What's the next step?

Skype has been great in the past, is it worth hanging around in the hopes it will be great again????

loven31 commented Tuesday, Dec 15

I actually stopped using Skype for this very reason. I got fed up with the constant hangs with Internet Explorer. Upon upgrading to Windows 7 I decided to give it another go and even after specifically requesting the add-on for IE NOT to be installed..BUT..it miraculously found itself enabled on my system once again and the hangs have started again. I will not be downloading any 'fix' for this because god only knows what sneeky extra little toolbar or add-ons you will include in it. I was very happy with Skype in its earlier, more basic form, but have become increasingly displeased with each successive upgrade and will now consider removing it from my system again to stop these conflicts it causes

I also have the same problems with Skype 4.1.0.179/Windows7-32bit/IE8 using a Logitech Pro 9000 Webcam...cannot a call in any shape or form. Additionally, the test call feature hangs...no answer and the ringer does not stop after I end the call. My computer recognizes there is a problem with the Skype add-on and tells me that Skype is working on it. From the other posts, the fix does not appear to be high on Skype's priorities...people started reporting this problem at least 2 months ago.

Feedback from Skype on their progress would be VERY helpful. As it stands, I am not so sure the problem is being worked at all.

Hi,
I'm running 4.1.0.179 and having a few minor problems. First, I'm no longer able to see when contacts were last on Skype. That feature helped deal with my other main problem, which is that for some reason some of my contacts are not showing up as online, even though they are in fact on Skype. I'm actually IM'ing with one person right now, and she's still not showing up as on Skype in my contact list - and I don't show up as online in hers, either. This is becoming a real problem because we're missing meetings. Please advise! Thanks.

I've been using Skype for a few years on my laptop with XP Pro and have had few problems up until tonight when I upgraded to version 4.1.079. The worst part was my video stream stopped working. I've been using an analog video camera, plugged into USB as a web cam, with no problems. After installing version 4.1, my video preview was just a black screen with a message to the affect of: "Your video stream isn't the correct format." The weird part was when I rebooted and tried Yahoo Messenger and even doing a video capture with a Windows program, it was if my entire comp didn't recognize the video input anymore! Even my Logitech digital web cam didn't work! I ended up having to do a system restore, rolling my comp back to before I upgraded Skype. Now I'm back to version 3.8 and at least everything works again, but what a hassle...

The second thing that really sucks about version 4.1 is the addition of that god-awful "Browser Highlighter" plug-in. At no point during the upgrade process, is the user warned about it or even asked if they want the stupid thing. Luckily I didn't have any of the problems getting it off my machine like I read so many other people have had.

In the future, I'm going to be extremely hesitant about upgrading Skype. Hopefully my experience with tonight that serves as a warning to others.

Since the update skype has become unstable on anything I try to do, this includes trying to configure my webcam (which does not work anymore), trying to call and clicking on my contacts. Not only does skype freeze it causes my wholes OS to crash as well, I had no issue at all before this update, is there a older working version to use in the meantime, whilst this gets fixed?
Thanks

I use Windows 7, but I thought it is supported by skype?

I'm totally new to skype, but have heard glowing reports from all friends who use it. I have a huge problem with sound delay whilst on a video call. We get the audio almost straight away, but the other party has a long - maybe 15 second delay before getting the audio. I am on a wired connection, he is using a mobile wireless broadband connection. Any ideas???

I am using Skype from Iraq to stay in touch back home. I have been using Skype since June 09 and was operating on a 2003 computer with a Pentium 4 and XP and had very minimal issues with the previous version. I recently had to upgrade my computer and now I have a CORE 2 Duo with Windows 7 and the lates version of Skype. The program now runs very slow and I am unable to really connect. If it does connect then there is a good 25-40 second delay between hearing the other party with a lot of distortion in the communications if you can even make out the words. Is there a fix comming out soon for this verion for opeation with Windows 7. I was going to try the new Beta but I see it does not support 7 just yet.

Need some help

Skype 4.1.079 installed on a brand new 64bit Win7 machine with Quad Core Athlon and an ATI 4850 graphics card (with Catalyst v9 drivers), with a Microsoft LifeCam VX3000 camera and 8mbps broadband. All latest drivers freshly downloaded off Microsoft.

Skype is currently completely unusable. Firstly it forgets the audio and video settings every time it switches on. Secondly, audio quality is choppy at best. Thirdly and worst, the video does not work at all. The camera input freezes and then crashes the video drivers. Incoming video also does not work.

What's wrong with Skype?

I am using skype 4.1.0.179
This is perhaps the worst skype version I am using till date. The sound quality is extremely poor and it is becoming impossible to understand what the other end is saying. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate.

It seems this sound issue is common in Skype and Windows 7. Any ideas, on how to fix it, other than downgrading to 3.8?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Hot Fix does not work, I have 4 computers with Skype on them and the Internet Explorer plug in for highlighting numbers causes I.E. to not respond every few seconds. I solved this by removing all Skype plugins from I.E. and everything works fine now. Click on tools, Skype plugin, scroll to the bottom, and click remove Skype plugin.

If it is of any use to the developers or other users. I get a race condition from the SkypePnr.dll with certain other applications. It drives CPU utilization to 100%. I too found the toolbar installed without my permission, but when I uninstalled the toolbar (under IE Tools) the condition has gone away.

It appears that with some web pages or applications the phone number parser (the above .dll) can't find an endstate to terminate its search of the web page.

For me; This version crashes IE7 using Windows 7 64 bits. I am so angry I wanna through the computer out the window...

On top of this Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 has to be installed with Logitech's 64 bit version and this seems to crash Skype 4.1. My father has the same laptop and camera and it behaves the same. Skype freezes and the ringsignals just never stops unless you reboot the computer or kills the program in the task bar. This logitech camera is certified together with skype and skype's 32bit version is certified with Windows 7 64 bit. But things are really a mess at this point. (01312010)

I even tried Skype 4.2 beta. I could not open the setup screen for the sound camera etc before skype crashed and I had to reboot the computer. Closing all skype software and logitech software in take manager/bar does not help, they wont startup properly again without rebooting... this is so so bad.

I have been using the latest Spype 4.1.179 on my Windows 7 64-bit. I also have the same problem with Internet Explorer popping up a message with Skype plug-in causing issues. Sometimes it crashes all instances of Internet Explorer and sometimes it just closes the current tab automatically. It was very fustrating.

I was able to get around the problem by uninstalling Skype plug-in module. Skype still works fine without the plug-in. This might help others with the same problem. Give it a try.

My Skype is freezing during making calls. I have used Version 4.1 and 4.2 Beta for last few weeks. There is no any change, after connection in few seconds my laptop PC is freeze and I need to make hard reset. I have Skype on my desktop PC and it is working fine.

My laptop is: IBM, ThinkPad, model: R40e, CPU 2.20GHZ, 500MB RAM, O/S Windows Home SP 3.

I have cleaned up memory and registry with CCleaner and Registry Mechanic. Memory usage with load Skype is under 20%, with Skype in calling mode under 60% and no other programs run. All other programs, including video and audio are working fine.

Is there anything that Skype will run well on my laptop PC?

Regards
Igor

P.S. Could you please send your answer on my email.

I used ur "hotfix" because windows said I'd skype problems & so diverted me to your site which then said 2 download hotfix 4.1. I did that & now my webcam wont work for video chats yet it was working perfectly earlier. Can you help me about this a.s.a.p. because I need to make a video call but can't, yet the only reason I tried the hotfix was for a problem with skype stopping working with internet explorer & not because I'd webcam problems. Yet now thanks to this download I now have more problems than I started with. The exact explorer problem wasn't listed but Im guessing it had something to do with the fact I only setup today for it to be able to dial website numbers etc & now Im very disappointed because I would rather have put up with that problem & just manually called website numbers instead of having my webcam stop working with video call. I would never have tried the hotfix if I'd known this would happen. Please help me about this.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and my first attempt at solving the problem (IE freezes):

Completely Uninstall Skype - Problem of IE freezing is gone however no Skype!

Reinstall Skype w/o IE plugin - Problem of IE freezing is gone whenever skype is not running. As soon as I start Skype, within about 10 seconds IE will freeze.

I have this problem too with IE stppingnwork when Skype is on.. I just ignore it, and make sure IE is shut down whn skype is running..

I think the problem is IE (microsoft) is being cut out of ADDVERT incomes by the Skype people, who don't have enough financial clout to design thier own counterforce bug to combat Microsoft's MSN mesenger.. I'm probably wrong with this theory, but there is a 50% chance I am not..

Hey, I have a solution for those of you who have the skype internet explorer add-on problem.
While in Internet Explorer, you can go to tools and click "Skype add-on for Internet Explorer" and click uninstall, or you can click "Manage Add-ons" (also under tools), scroll down to "Skype add-on for Internet Explorer" and click disable.
This will not uninstall the add-on, but it should prevent it from closing your web browser.
Other options include using a different browser such as Firefox, or waiting until a new version of Skype comes out. They will have probably fixed the problem with the new version.

Okay, so my husband is out of country with the military. We both have the latest version of skype for windows. I am finding that anytime I make a call to him he answers the call but the call on my side keeps ringing. When it gets to that point I have to close down any programs including skype and actually restart my computer, as this is the only thing that will actually turn the ringing sound off. We try and type messages at that point and we get the little waiting circle and the message is then sent HOURS later. We try to make another call and the same process starts all over. Is anyone familiar with this and how do I fix it, any help will be great I miss seeing my husband!! This has happened on more than my computer (which is new, so old computer problems aren't my issue) any computer I try this happens, one version is also on linux so that has not made a difference. Thanks

donphilbrook commented Thursday, Mar 18

Ya know... I've tried your program four or five times, and every time i try it, it messes up my ability to stay connected with my wireless router. its bad enough that calls are cut off numerous times, and that there's ALWAYS some kind of software (phishing, etc.) attatched to your downloads, but come on guys...quit messing the other stuff up on my machine! I know of only one person that isn't having issues with this, and its only because he's using an old version of windows.

Hey Skype programers!

This is an interesting senario I am experiencing. I am running IE8 on XP Professional SP4. When I fire up Skype, Windows box pops up and tells me: Sorry Windows has experienced a problem and will have to shut down, sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused (like they care :). So after numerous try's (100s), I went into 'tool', 'internet opton', 'advance', 'browsing' and TURNED OFF ' third-party browsing options. But still, windows is giving me the error message about ...sorry...blah, blah, blah.

So, I turned off IE8 and fired up Firefox, its usually good to go, not today or any day re this matter. I fire up Skype in Firefox with IE8 disable and the damn windows message STILL pops up...sorry... :(.

Skype programmers do you have anything new in your 'Fix-It Tool Box', because I have run out options. Until you find a fix, I will be be using 'Google Voice', I haven't had any issues with them, nor have any one else I have spoken too, and the best part, is it is 'FREE'.

I hope you can get this worked out soon, I was really digging Skype up until this recent developments with constant shutting down of windows. Again, hope you can get us an answer soon.

Best of luck!
