Coming soon: video calls on your Verizon Wireless 4G LTE device with Skype mobile

Skype mobile on Verizon WirelessWe’re happy to announce that video calling will soon be available with Skype mobile on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network.

This new version of Skype mobile from Verizon Wireless will be deeply integrated into a wide range of 4G smartphones, including the HTC ThunderBolt, which will to be available by mid-2011. With front- and rear-facing cameras, these Android-based 4G LTE smartphones will make it simple for you to make Skype-to-Skype video calls over Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network.

Of course, you’ll also be able to use it to make free Skype-to-Skype calls and chat, as well as call friends and family abroad at our super-low rates.

To be the first to know when it’s available, sign up for a reminder on the Skype website.

Only on Verizon? What about T-Mobile & other android based phones

This is dumb, to release video chat only to iPhone and Verizon 4G? Why would you do that?

renatocicilia commented Saturday, Jan 8

would love skype more if they supported video calling on android devices to (only apple devices atm........). I think i,m going to use the competitor (rival) for my samsung galaxy s. Instead of using skype i,m using some other software for video calling. I will inform al my friends about skype, being racist at google. and tell them not to use skype because its not suportive for android users. Goodbye.

Is this the cutting edge for Skype on mobiles? OR are there other nets where Skype is also functioning in the described manner? Will it (presumably) only be via 4G?

What about Canadian nets - anything happening there - I use Virgin, are they to be involved?

This talk about Verizon LTE, what about other Android phones ... like the ones that use GSM and 3G. Will they get it?

I have a my touch by htc capable of video calling. My provider is Tmobile which has quick video calling. My brother is over seas and has a skype account and that's how we communicate. It would be nice to be able to call him wherever I'm at.

Well as stated above the 4g smartphone s are android based so an android release for current devices can't be far off...unless of course skype are deliberately holding off a release due to the fact that android market share of mobile phone operating system is almost double that of iOS and currently the skype network does not have sufficient bandwidth for it. Maybe that's why video calling on the iphone wasn't available until recently.

What a bullshit!? Happy to announce "soon" and on Verizon only? Is this really something that should make us happy?!

Screw Verizon, what about EVO on Sprint?

evald80 commented Wednesday, Feb 9

Currently I'm using the latest skype on my Galaxy S.
I have to say that the video calling is missing and its a huge limit but the most important thing to say is that skype is so battery consuming, like no other voip application.
You can also notice that the cpu of this device becomes so hot after using for some minutes skype.
Hope to see better version in the future.
Regards.

You hit it right on the head triple.ess, Skype is holding out on us and will not come out and tell us straight up. They have a contract with Verizon and I’m sure there is plenty of money involved in it. They had Skype for android (Verizon only) for almost a year before they opened it up to none Verizon phones and now we have a disabled version. And as the announcement says they are doing it again and not supporting the many Skype users that have been with them longer then Verizon. But it is business and money talks. All we can do is hope they will be honest soon.

We want to upgrade the video call going Android now!

uchiha_nikki commented Monday, Feb 28

I really appreciate what skype have done for us, and I'm using skype since I wake up in the internet world up to now, and I'm not in the position of criticizing you now, but, I'm a bit disappointed, I'm an android user (galaxy s) there are other services that released already video call service on android phones like YM., but I'd really love to use your video call on my phone, you already released it on iphone(apple) and on verizon only, let's be fair ... were hoping for video calls on android coming soon

"..these Android-based 4G LTE smartphones..."

Assuming the app is Android based and takes the form of an .apk file extension, then its only a matter of time before one of the talentent dev's over at XDA Forums gets a hold of it, and hacks it to piece's. Fear not people.

Thunderbolt owner...waiting. Please hurry.

hellostephy51 commented Sunday, Apr 3

Just purchased the Thunderbolt and returned it bc Skype Mobile won't work at all (not even for IMs or calls).

Prior to returning it, I downloaded the regular Skype, but it won't allow me to make Skype calls unless I'm using WiFi. Why can't I make a regular call to a skype account (no video) on the 3G network?!?
