Skype for iPhone now with video calls

Skype for iPhone video callIt’s as simple as that: our iPhone app now comes with video. Download it now from the App Store, or read on to find out more.

Skype for iPhone lets you make and receive free Skype video calls on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, and works over both WiFi and 3G connections*. With approximately 25 million† people signed into Skype at any given time, our new iPhone app makes it easy to share moments with your friends, family and colleagues, wherever you are.

With our new app, you can:

  • Make video calls to people on their computers as well as other iPhones (details below)
  • Make free audio calls to anyone else on Skype
  • Make great value calls to landlines and mobiles around the world

The new app is compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation with iOS 4.0 or above. You can also receive video calls on the iPod touch 3rd generation and iPad. Calls can be made between devices using the new Skype for iPhone app and desktops including Skype for Windows 4.2 and above, Skype for Mac 2.8 and above, Skype for Linux and the ASUS videophone.

Skype for iPhone is one of the top five free iPhone apps in 2010 according to Apple, and now it’s just got even better.

* Additional data charges may apply. To get the best quality, we recommend a strong WiFi connection for video calling.
† At peak times, as of November 2010.

Fantastic!

It was about time!

lwclam commented Thursday, Dec 30

how about Android? can make video calls from iphone to android?

king.inuyasha commented Thursday, Dec 30

Great! Now how about making a release tomorrow that brings Android up to parity with the iPhone version, and maybe allow us to use cellular data networks for calls too!

valerii.pastukh commented Thursday, Dec 30

And how can I make video calls using the iPad?

javiernegrete31 commented Thursday, Dec 30

Awesome job Skype! Will this be available for the Droids too?

kinddragon33 commented Thursday, Dec 30

When you support iPad FTW?!?

nicovanherreweghe commented Thursday, Dec 30

Is there an app for android that supports videocalling, or is it only for apple?

djimng commented Thursday, Dec 30

When will Android phones have the same? We are not minority anymore!!!
iPhone s*cks

davidgbrookes commented Thursday, Dec 30

Thank you Skype for making this great app. It just works and and does what it is supposed to do. Now in time for New Year and sharing the Skype moment with friends and family.

It has been worth the wait.

Thanks again.

kamiland_secret commented Thursday, Dec 30

yessssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!

fredrikwe commented Thursday, Dec 30

Great - Thank you!

Could we now also have an app for Android that works, PLEASE!

alvaromunoz85 commented Thursday, Dec 30

Great! This is really great!

Now support bluetooth headsets, please! :D

jcknotts commented Thursday, Dec 30

THIS was an excellent piece of news to wake up to. I use Skype daily and this is perfect!

jlalbo commented Thursday, Dec 30

Why not push notifications? You have to mantain app open all time to be reachable. At this moment Tango and whatsapp, both with push, are a better combination to be online ever.

alexeyyyyy commented Thursday, Dec 30

All this is very good trend! And when the video appears on Symbian-phones?

felisberto72 commented Thursday, Dec 30

I want Skype video on my Samsung Galaxy S.

henrikdalin commented Thursday, Dec 30

Nice, but when will be able to this on my Android device?
Android tablets with webcams do exist ... :-) ... you know

cboteros commented Thursday, Dec 30

Awesome! Just unfortunately I don't have an iphone, but I have a HTC :-) so, looking forward to this feature for Android! Great work Skype!

david.bockman commented Thursday, Dec 30

My iPod Touch owning son is going to love this :o)

seanhsmith.com commented Thursday, Dec 30

Finally! Thank you for finally bringing this to the iPhone app, Skype! (First!)

vfil.us commented Thursday, Dec 30

One word: THANKS!!! Great holiday gift!!!

freedomdeep1 commented Thursday, Dec 30

I was elated to see this update and had to test it out last night. Video quality was great on my iPod touch, but if I were to have any complaint was that I wasn't able to do anything else in skype while in a video call. Besides that, it's pretty awesome. Thanks!

jeffheis commented Thursday, Dec 30

Booyaa! I wonder how this will affect (or kill) FaceTime. How the heck did you pull this one off?!? Great work Skype!

ewok85 commented Thursday, Dec 30

I love it! Great work Skype :)

bcjulien commented Thursday, Dec 30

Thank you very much Skype! You've answered us!

rogerthorntonbrown commented Thursday, Dec 30

When's it coming to Android?

roger_green commented Thursday, Dec 30

Peter - great news! But, how ironic that that the video you feature to show this new capability is Flash and cannot be viewed on the iPhone, iPod or iPad - the very devices you're targeting! Is there a "disconnect" at Skype?!

fizan989 commented Thursday, Dec 30

Thanks, have been waiting for this.

sharon.r.ray commented Thursday, Dec 30

I just want to say how much I appreciate skype no matter what happens. I have one child in Europe and one child in Japan and as far as I am concerned, you are the best thing that could have been created for us. Bless you.

jessnkorey commented Thursday, Dec 30

This just made my day. Finally Skype with video on iPhone 4. Can't wait to try it out.

ivey.west commented Thursday, Dec 30

Hmmm... Doesn't seem to link in w/ my Bluetooth hands free equipment, which pretty much makes the upgrade unusable.

gunnarwb commented Thursday, Dec 30

From a person who travels for a living and loves his wife (and future child)... thank you!

davesonoma commented Thursday, Dec 30

I just made my first Skype iPhone video call and everything worked great. I'm thankful to the engineering team that made this natural and important update to the iPhone app. Very well done!

wiltjk commented Thursday, Dec 30

Wonderful news, and Skype is one of my most used iPad apps. When can we expect an updated UI for the iPad form/factor?

scottboone commented Thursday, Dec 30

Still no Bluetooth headset support???

chielnijssen commented Thursday, Dec 30

WHY for iPhone and not for Symbian (Nokia N8) or Android???

I'm getting tired of all the overhyped iPhone stuff.
Come on make it available for other platforms as well, before iPhone users believe their device is a unique state of the art piece of technology

shepherdusa commented Thursday, Dec 30

Any timeline on when this will also be available for Android?

bostondv commented Thursday, Dec 30

Do you have any plans to bring this to Android?

alfirod commented Thursday, Dec 30

i have been with skype for manyyy years and all of them satisfactory calling with video skype to skype or land lines i love it. but recently everything has gone wrong, my subscription cheks OK, my speakers, webcam, microfone check OK, but i cannot make any calls. the icons just do not work not even the echo sound tester that i cannot do from my page but through customer service, the call is dropped. what is going on? anybody has the same proble and a way to fix it. this is a BAD time of the year to have skype not working properly

hsvmomdad commented Thursday, Dec 30

Mr. Parkes:
Thank you, for posting this information. We are dedicated Skype users because our son was deployed in the Middle East for over a year. We are now becoming familiar with our new iPad (32GB), and it is very nice. We are glad to see your new app, and would like to ask you to clear up this, our point of confusion. A) The app "is is compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation with i0S 4.0 or above."
(B) "You can also receive video calls on the iPod touch 3rd generation and iPad." It is noted that your blog was posted in the month of December, and you probably knew that the iPad's iOS version 4 was released earlier that your post, in November. We have iinstalled the Skype version 2.1.2 (220) on the iPad, and our iPad iOS was in November upgraded to v4. it is now at 4.2.1 (8C148). Would you, please, comment upon why you said that the Skype app would only "receive video calls on the ... iPad."? This differing allusion indirectly invites the inference that the Skype app is not fully compatible with the iPad. We are having difficulty with placing calls to another Skype user's name. And, please add, when may we expect that the fully compatible app would be released? Your consideration of this request is respectfully requested, and your clarifying response will be appreciated.

g.ratchford commented Thursday, Dec 30

Thank you for the Christmas/New Year present. Tested it with a friend (his iphone 4 and my home computer) and it worked very well using wi-fi. Haven't tested the 3G part. Thanks for giving us this feature.

karen.hime1 commented Thursday, Dec 30

I think Skype is awesome. My husband is deployed and if skype wasn't available we would not be dealing with the deployments in the same fashion. So what, from time to time it goes down. No big deal. Thanks Skype for all you do!

iahmed91 commented Friday, Dec 31

Nice!

sccl-nokia commented Friday, Dec 31

Nice, but.... make it compatible with the Nokia N900's skype video chat functionality. Just tried that and neither side gets any video :-(

santiagoluz commented Friday, Dec 31

Cool!
But I'm waiting improvements on Android version of the app. You should also take care of your customers that use Android phones.

reub.solomon commented Friday, Dec 31

cool video. video on iphone / subscription bonus certainly making up for downtime. keep up the good work Skype!

How about that native iPad app that you guys promised us a year ago?

diego.plencovich commented Friday, Dec 31

With this news I forgive the blackout the other day! It's great and it was highly anticipated by me and by many users! Thanks Skype. Happy New Year!

g4paul commented Friday, Dec 31

When using Skype between a computer and the iPhone 4 I cannot see the video from the computer on the iPhone. This is the case from both Macs and PC with latest vs of Skype. Any fix? In all cases I have activated video.

Uh, hello Skype. Your video example is made in flash -- which is not supported and cant be viewed on the iPhone.

pascha_od commented Friday, Dec 31

YEAAAAAHH!!!!
Just tried - works perfect!
Thank you, guys! That what I've been waiting since I've got iPhone 4

m_j_wise commented Friday, Dec 31

Skype still destroys battery life on any iOS device it's used on. You still aren't using notifications! How hard is this?

nebojsaiphone commented Friday, Dec 31

I am not sure is only me but this is NOT working on my iphone.Having acount I am not allowed eaven to sign in since I can't put my name in account..........They probably moved development in to India and they have froots of the stupidityy

mercia.nery commented Friday, Dec 31

Amazing app!

king.inuyasha commented Saturday, Jan 1

So when are we going to have this capability added to Skype for Android? And what about Skype for Android on Galaxy S phones. Obviously, Samsung can't be relied on to keep their word about releasing the Froyo upgrade for the USA Galaxy S phones, so somebody at Skype needs to work around whatever issue is causing Skype to not work properly on the Galaxy S phones on Android 2.1.

Also, what about the Skype for Linux client? It hasn't been updated at all in almost a whole year!

brendanpdoherty commented Saturday, Jan 1

Cool, how far away are video calls for Skype for Android? I'm looking forward to making video calls from my galaxy tab.

justaguy_75ae commented Saturday, Jan 1

While skype's support grows on mobile platforms, its support is spotty. Some of skype's solutions are not true voip and cost minutes.

They should be focusing on better support for Linux and Unix and Mac.
There needs to be a true 64 bit version for Linux. 64 bit Linux has been out for years and Skype cannot support 64 bit Linux. They force 64 bit users to install 32 bit libraries and wrappers to make Skype work.

I was using Ekiga with diamond card. Since I built a new computer with a 64 bit processor.

Now I am thinking of switching to Google voice permanently since it has 64 bit versions.

jeremypotvin commented Sunday, Jan 2

I'm using an iPhone 4. Whether I'm calling or receiving, to Skype on a desktop/laptop (pc or Mac), or another iPhone, on 3G or wifi... no matter the combination... I cannot see the person I'm connected to. They can see me fine, audio is fine, but I can't see them.

Have also uninstalled the app and re-installed several times. Have also deleted all other VoIP apps and turned off any apps that use the camera.

Amy ideas on what I need to do to get this to work?

andreslindgren.se commented Sunday, Jan 2

Works great on the iphone! However I think I can speak for every ipad user out there when I say that we would love an universal app so that we can use the full potential of the ipad.

Either way this update was better then ever.

paulgustavyates commented Sunday, Jan 2

Thank you thank you thank you! The new video on iphone works great. I have only tried it with iphone4 to computer but I think it is better or equal than computer to computer. So far i've been on wifi while doing this but I'm looking forward to trying it from 3G.

Anyway, keep up the good work skype!

ramiwahood commented Monday, Jan 3

There is a problem with the skype iphone app video call feature. I have an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.2 and is unmodified. There simply is no video call button. It does not exist. I am only able to receive video but not send. For some reason, it is as if the app is treating my phone like a device without a camera such as an iPad. I have tried emailing skype's customer support but they are very lousy. They just copy and paste information ignoring the fact that is an actual technical issue. I have tried everything such as uninstalling and reinstalling the app. I also tried rebooting the phone. I know one other person having this problem which must mean that there are lots of people that are experiencing this issue. Speak up. I am expecting a fix for this issue soon.

fabiosf2 commented Monday, Jan 3

When do you think the same will be available for Nokia smartphones? It would be cool.

rajivinspace commented Tuesday, Jan 4

Please add 3 way video calling feature. I love your app and the software, but would really love if you had the 3 way calling feature to it. Please add this feature.

gerd-compack commented Tuesday, Jan 4

You should know the difference between the IiPhone (Apple) and the Galaxy Tab (Samsung) - as I'm the owner of the Galaxy, I'm desperate to use Skype on it!

asicit commented Wednesday, Jan 5

Does the updated Skype software for iPhone address any of the issues with excessive power usage that the earlier versions have?
If the answer is no to the above, then:
Does the updated Skype software support the iPhone notifications method so that app doesn't always have to be running in the background chewing through the battery at a million miles an hour? (All I really want is for the chats to continue to come through when I'm out and about)
Is there a more graceful way of exiting the app so it doesn't kill the battery - getting a bit sick and tired of calling up the iPhone task manager and killing it.

fconolly commented Thursday, Jan 6

Great...

So when is the Android app coming?

yyysuyasa commented Friday, Jan 7

Peter, it is NOT WORKING on my brand new I phone 4, i can see myself, not the other person, and everyone is leaving posts and SKYPO are NOT giving answers.....very frustrating to have such a bit of celebratory Happi New Years communication news, and it doesn't work......IT business need to communicate back with there users please!

vanewerksip3g commented Friday, Jan 7

Whoo-hoo! I've been waiting for this. We've used Skype on our home computers for years. (Used it extensively when my borther-in-law was in Iraq.) I tried it out with my iPhone 3GS and the Vainworks Stand (it flips the rear-facing camera to a front-facing camera) and it works great!!

mzwizard commented Saturday, Jan 8

Nice, but when will it come with video for galaxy s? Surely disappointed.

renatocicilia commented Saturday, Jan 8

would love skype more if they supported video calling on android devices to (only apple devices atm........). I think i,m going to use the competitor (rival) for my samsung galaxy s. Instead of using skype i,m using some other software for video calling. I will inform al my friends about skype, being racist at google. and tell them not to use skype because its not suportive for android users. Goodbye.

gidimiz commented Saturday, Jan 8

What about:
BBBBBBBBBBBBBLLLLLLLLLLUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTTTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTHHHHHHHHH?????????????????????????????????????????????????????

There are so many other software out there that have Bluetooth feature! its so important especially when im driving and im getting a call!
Why is it so hard if your competition already have this!
speaking of competition, what about push notification? why do I always need to worry and check if my Skype is still working in the background?
Please do something about this, you are legging behind!!

yrogerg77 commented Monday, Jan 10

How about video for the iPad? I can only receive video calls, but I can't send video? Why is that?

skunky.j commented Monday, Jan 10

I would love to see this on Android! Got a Galaxy Tab recently, really want to put that front facing camera to good use. Nothing else out there compares to Skype!

rbleib commented Wednesday, Jan 12

Who cares? Without bluetooth support, all of this innovation is useless. Please focus on your users' priorities and get this right.

In the mean time, we can always use Fring.

Thank you so much for delivering Skype with video for the Iphone. It allows my family to speak to one another coast to coast. My 75 and 78 year old parents are thrilled to be able to see their grandchildren anytime thanks to you. We are a big fan our your company!

brianbatts commented Tuesday, Jan 25

Yeah, I'll say it too. What about Android? I love that you suckled up to Verizon on Android and left the rest of us out in the cold. Nice touch. Just lovely. (sarcasm implied and intended). Certainly makes me want to spend money using Skype for voice-calls when you don't want me as a video customer.

bill.richardson.mobile commented Friday, Feb 4

I don't understand why people are so "gimme, gimme, gimme". Obviously, they aren't developers, or they would understand that these things take time.

Skype - awesome job with the video chat. It's amazing on iPhone4, and makes "FaceTime" a big joke.

The only thing left, in my opinion, is to support bluetooth. Once that's done... this is a killer app for the iphone. Good thing I have an iPhone and not an Android ;)

e.kugelberg commented Tuesday, Feb 8

Please, make the iPhone app stop downloading ALL my old chats. I already know what's in them, i kind of wrote them myself....

jayvly commented Thursday, Feb 10

At the risk of sounding like a "gimme, gimme, gimme person :) I have been using Skype for many many years. probably as long as it has been around and have always supported it. I love the new video calling upgrade on the iphone and think that it makes it a very powerful application, but please, please, please, for the safety of all of us, will you release a bluetooth upgrade!! "Others" have successfully done it and even the jailbroken version has it. It's imperative that we have bluetooth at this stage.
Great app!!! :)
