Skype now available for Android phones
Skype for Android has been updated to work on the Samsung Galaxy S too.
You’ve been asking us for it – and now it’s here. Skype is now available on a wide range of Android phones, so you can save money and stay in touch when you’re out and about. Visit skype.com/m on your phone to download, or read on to find out what’s inside.
With the new app, you can make free Skype-to-Skype calls, and send and receive IMs for free, one-to-one or with a group. You can also call phones at Skype’s great rates – over WiFi or 3G.
To make calls to phones abroad, simply dial the number in Skype and pay with Skype Credit – or make unlimited calls with a subscription. When you’re abroad, we recommend that you connect to a WiFi zone for best value.
If you already use Skype on a computer, you'll see your full contact list when you sign in to Skype on your Android phone. If not, you can set up an account and be ready to go in minutes.
Product Manager Mark Douglas explains how the app works.
You can download Skype from the Android Market, or from skype.com/m on your phone. You’ll need Android OS 2.1 or later – check Settings > About if you’re not sure what version your phone is running.
Skype is not available in the Android Market in China or Japan.
Skype has been tested on HTC and Motorola devices with Android OS 2.1 and above. It may work on other Android phones, but we can’t guarantee full functionality or compatibility. We’re aware of some problems with the Samsung Galaxy S, and we’re looking to address these in the future.
It’s free to use Skype in a WiFi zone. If you use Skype with a mobile data connection, operator charges may apply, so we recommend an unlimited data plan.
In the US, you can make calls only over WiFi.
A fair use policy applies to unlimited subscriptions.

Great work !! Please could you implement the option to move to de SD card? It takes 13mb of my nexus one memory, that's too much!!
madscouser commented Tuesday, Oct 5
Very very happy with this , big thanks to all the techies at Skype . Works beautifully on HTC Desire and everything has synced over including my credit and contacts .
I can now contact all my family members all across Europe at any time , Skype really is one of the best things to have happened over the last 10 years or so , before Skype i had to use a phone box to call abroad and at best got £1 a minute .
jasongillyon commented Tuesday, Oct 5
Works for me, however now uninstalled because it takes up to much space. When will you enable move to SD on Froyo?

It's working great on my HTC Desire but how can I quit the application? I just see "Skype Signed in" in my status bar with the skype icon on the top left. The back-button on my Desire doesn't seem to work and if I press the home-button, the application is still running in the background.
Peter Parkes commented Tuesday, Oct 5
@buran4ik unfortunately the screen on the HTC Wildfire is too small to run Skype – you need a minimum resolution of 480x320 pixels.

OK, I played a while with skype on my Desire, it's working great. But I can also report that there is no way to exit the application... it's always running!
I guess this will be fixed in future...
Also +1 for option to move to SD and maybe improve performance for loading contacts in future.

SignOut -> open Skype go My Info -> press Menu button .. there settings and Sign Out
mrmxyzptlk commented Tuesday, Oct 5
Indeed, a welcomed news but, for feature improvments:
- the Desire back button (or anyother phone with a back button) should put the application in backround, it's annoying that only pressing the HOME button throws SkyPE in the background
- already crashed on me while loading contacts (once)
- if I select to show only online contacts, why doesn't he saves this option, so next time I'm logging in should by default select this option. it's annoying that I have to select evrytim "Online contacts only", everytime I startup SkyPE
In the rest, good job guys, keep it up, maybe you will talk to Sony to bring SkyPe to the PS3 ... handsfree we have, small keyboard for text chating we already have, Ps3 Eye (webcam) we already have ... we just need SkyPe to contact our friends online ![]()

Any idea of *when* the problems with Galaxy S will be fixed (as several people have pointed out, it sells well around the world so presumably good for skype as well to be able to run on it)?
Also, it would be useful to know what the problem is, judging by an earlier comment here it sounds like it works on Froyo, so is this a Android 2.1 issue?
metserve commented Tuesday, Oct 5
Thanks for the new app, but please fix these issues:
1) Ability to remove the "Signed in" option from the notification bar.
2) When I sign in, my online number forwarding to my mobile is dropped!

bogdan.milanovic commented Tuesday, Oct 5
Peter,
Why no calling over 3G in the US? Does the US, yet again, lag behind other countries?
amexudo commented Tuesday, Oct 5
I used to use skype in Fring, but Skype made a dirty move, so I recommend you use "Nimbuzz" for google talk and facebook chat (skype chat also).
Or alternatively you can use Vonage to make calls to your Facebook friends.
Most of your skype contacts have gmail or facebook, so we don't need skype.

It actually works on the Galaxy S, at least with the (yet to be released) Froyo update. I have no problem starting the app, test call went fine and a test with both another skype account and a land-line over 3G worked splendidly.
It would however be nice if the Skype app would sort contacts like the desktop client does, Online, Offline and non-skype instead of displaying them alphabetically in the All Contacts view.

Seems to be working well on HTC Legend in Belgium. But would like to be able to see when it is using 3G, and maybe switch it off. Don't have an unlimited dataplan. Also, an indication of how much data Skype on android uses per minute would be helpful.

Not available for HTC Wildfire - (according to @Peter Parkes due to small screen resolution). The Skype/Three version works perfectly on the HTC Wildfire screen, just not over WiFi.

To actually EXIT you will need to Sign out first, and then from the sign in screen press the Back button.
stormerhosting commented Tuesday, Oct 5
ok, now time for adding the video call for sprint evo? Since we are doing this over wifi only, please add the video calling mode. Fring was/is not a good experience for me. Ideally, I'd love to be able to travel, be at a hotel, connect to wifi and make video calls to my wife and kids on skype and "see" them in video and have them see me in video while calling them. Once that happens, skype will rule the voip world.

Main issue is that you cannot exit the app! Also an option to disable the taskbar notification icon would be useful.

Works well but has a huge footprint. Hope you reduce the size and allow for the majority of the application to be moved to the sd card soon. On another note, will there be a version that allows for 3 users to get their unlimited use over data but still take advantage of the wifi access with Android 2.2 installed?

Let's face it - Skype sucks big time. There used to be a "lite" version, where you could just use text chat. Skype pulled it from the market. Now they just want money, and obviously they have some kind of contract with Verizon, since I can't download it for my T-Mobile phone. What makes me most angry is that it seems Verizon has hijacked the Android name like they only had Android phones, and Skype saying it's available for Android is a not true. It's not available - I know because I have Android.

Overall, great job for this Android version!
It is still impossible to move it on the HTC Desire's SD card though... So I'll have to unistall it, because it really takes some precious space. What a shame

I'm getting the 'Skype Name does not exist' error on my EVO. Logged out and back in on the desktop to confirm password. This is while on wifi.

We hope? Uhm, this indicates a lack of commitment to the Android platform.
I really want to see active development from Skype for the Android. We shall see.
scadeg commented Tuesday, Oct 5
Ok, figured out my login issue, this might help others. A lot of the android keyboard autocompletes add a space after a word, so check your login name for a space. As soon as I removed the space after mine, it logged in fine.
Now, Skype devs: you should be trimming the login names.

It's a shame not working on Galaxy S!!!!
We hope to see it working soon!
julia.f.buckley commented Tuesday, Oct 5
Please make it moveable to sd card, it takes up too much space 15mb. Also, needs an easier exit from the app. If you are on a skype call and working in another app, it is impossible to go back to the call to end it (the other person has to end it). Running on htc hero firmware 2.1. Other than that, pleased it's available.

lozeno commented Tuesday, Oct 5
I'm glad it is FINALLY out, but there are already a number of issues that I hope will be addresed soon and fixed in the next release.
1) apparently I can't close the app. Hitting "back" won't close it, and hitting "home" will apparently close the UI, but leave Skype running (logo is on status bar). Which is fine... for a while! I don't want Skype always running, I need the ability to turn it off when I don't need it.
2) Just to be clear, "Exit" is not a good substitute: if I exit, I have to re-enter my user and password (even if I checked "automatically sign in" in Skype's settings); also, if I exit Skype, then turn off my device (I have a Desire), when I turn it back on all my Skype contacts have been deleted from my phone, so I have to log in Skype, sync contacts, and re-associate each one to my Google contacts. Painful!
A suggestion: leave the User management in Android's Settings -> Account screen, not in app, so that even if the app is closed (or exited), contacts are kept synced!
3) Drains away too much battery. Seriously.
4) Lacks video calls, but I can live without them since my Desire doesn't have a front camera.
justin.seiferth commented Tuesday, Oct 5
Well, I've put up with the lousy Linux client and I told myself I'd wait and see how the promised android support worked out before cancelling my subscription.... Given how well the Nokia support worked I was shocked to see how tremendously bad this is. Totally consumes (60+%) the battery and CPU on an EVO making basically useless for anything else, can't be moved to the SD care even with rooted utilities and only calling on wifi? Good thing Skype has a refund policy...
sc1967 commented Tuesday, Oct 5

timstackhouse commented Tuesday, Oct 5
Installed and uninstalled just as quickly. No calling over wireless data networks in the US means I'm not interested. This was the main feature that I was waiting to have in a Skype app on my phone.
It would be nice to switch to a data only with per minute voice calling and use Skype as my main voice line.
tomhermans commented Tuesday, Oct 5
okay, found the ridiculous error with the "no login", apparently there was a space at the end of the user name (automatically added I presume), and the app 'sees' it and concludes there is no "usernameX ", but "usernameX" works fine..
tested it, although a bit of a lag, works fine.. the "close app" button could have been simpler though, eg with one simple button via menu or something..

Looks good, but I don't want or need it running 24/7 so needs to be a much more accessible way to exit, plus if you sign out (so far as I can see the only option to exit the app) this also has the effect of forgetting your password the next time you want to use it.
Uninstalling until you can quit app properly.
bos.tarun commented Tuesday, Oct 5
I have been a long time Skype customer and use Skype for making international calls. My wife uses it on iPhone and likes the fact that we can use it over 3G. I'm a bit disappointed that Skype on Android won't work over 3G. This is ironic that Skype is more restrictive on Android and open source OS compared to the proprietary iOS. I am pretty sure Verizon has something to do with it, hopefully that will change in the future. On principle I'm using Google Voice with iptel sip service, instead of Skype for this particular reason.
lozeno commented Tuesday, Oct 5
@bos.tarun there's one thing that I don't understand: I read many comments about people who say that Skype for Android doesn't allow calls over 3G, yet I have tested it three times now and it works fine.
Are you sure that it's a Skype problem and not a carrier problem? I live in Italy, my carrier is Vodafone.

So if have to have both apps installed if I want to make calls over both WiFi and 3G in the US? That doesn't make any sense...

The Samsung Galaxy line is only one of the most popular Android-based phone lines in the world. It works great on my Droid X. To those that say there is no way to log off, there certainly is a way. Note that each tab has it's own menu, the one labeled 'My Info' contains the logoff button. Keep in mind that if you have meticulously refined your Gmail contacts you will want to take the default option on install and NOT mix any of your contact. No sense in having a boatload of contacts in there that you will never call on Skype. You can always change this later or merge them individually and manually. As far as I'm concerned at this time... Great Job Skype. I'm glad you took the time to get it right. Now, I only have one burning question, how do I get the other version that VZ pre-installed on my phone, off my phone without rooting the phone?

Confirmation for Skype developers that this doesn't work on the Samsung / T-Mobile Vibrant in the US. Stock firmware that came with the phone. Lol, no calls over 3G. Guys, go look for the Skype Lite beta app apk for Android. It was released before Skype crippled functionality to Verizon exclusivity in the US discontinued their policy of making functional, light-weight software. But really, who cares. No video chat, doesn't work on Galaxy S, and somehow, the Skype devs consistently add about 7-8MB extra to their mobile apps while Fring can do the same thing (and work) with a MUCH smaller install size.

Unless you use the galaxy s. I get the feeling thet skype has sold us dwn the tube and is not releasing a supported galaxy s option to support AT&T and Tmobile. I've been an avid supporter of skype for years and introduces many professional partners to the benifits of skype to be now let down by its lack of support to tehleading android phone. Thank you for developing the application!!! Works great via WIFI on Milestone XT720 in the US. Sound quality in calls to Skype clients is much better than calling their Skype numbers from my phone, virtually no lag. It is a pity that 3G data cannot be used, but I have wifi at home and at work, so not too big of a deal.
Wishlist:
--Please add SMS function.
--It is easy to get out of Skype by closing the task in the Task manager. It is good that it stays in background, and people can reach me from Skype, but it looks like the phone became a bit laggy with it. Maybe some optimizations could be implemented?
--Calls using 3G data in the US -- although this is lower priority for me.

I installed the skype for Android for a day on my HTC Desire running Android 2.2. I had to uninstall skype for a couple of reasons. Its huge in size (14 MB on my phone) & so takes up significant memory. It keeps on pinging the skype servers in the background for no apparent reason. Its a battery hog. My battery drained considerably faster when I had skype running in the background. Also to quit skype it takes 3 clicks. Why cannot pressing the back button or the home button quit skype? Please fix these issues because as long as these persist, the app is unusable.

Okay then, so Skype is important and needs gets an icon in the notification bar. Still, it is annoying. Many apps think that they are important. What about Twitter, Facebook, Mail, Ebay? All of them are important too. I would freak out if they all had such an icon. It is just annoying. At least I would like get option of get rid of that thing.
It vanishes when I sign out. But then I need to enter the password every time I want to sign it. That is also annoying. Please, Skype do something about it.
gabor.hojtsy commented Wednesday, Oct 6
I'd second that it crashes on basic moves on the Samsung Galaxy S. If you tap on a contact, it crashes. If you long-tap and get a popup menu, you choose chat, then you can type in your message (which is sent), but it crashes again. Looks like it needs some work. Thanks for covering Android though, keep up the work!

As matthew.bernstein said:
Looks good, but I don't want or need it running 24/7 so needs to be a much more accessible way to exit, plus if you sign out (so far as I can see the only option to exit the app) this also has the effect of forgetting your password the next time you want to use it.

HTC Desire with Froyo
Works very well on my desire. The biggest drawback is that ALL sounds are played through the earpiece. So you never hear calls, chats etc. Notifications should be played through the external speaker, not the earpiece.
I did a Skype Test call and quality seems quite good, even if my voice sounds a bit tinny. It's clear though and very usable.
Please can you address the notification issues in your next release!
Great work, thanks!

Samsung Galaxy S and FroYo beta JPH on it. Installed OK and logged in OK; had an early account from PC. There was not a possible to install to external memory card as FroYo (Android OS v2.2) support. And maybe I succeed, becouse I use the default browser (Chrome Lite). My ISP DNA and I am from Finland.
What problem you have? Does your ISP allow VoiP calls? I have heard that some countries have blocked this becouse they are greed.
To solve your problems try to set back your launcher to Samsung original TouchWiz (TW Launcher) and set your incoming browswer for default (Chrome Lite). Ask or check does your ISP allow VoiP calls; I think specially on USA.

Good job guys! Here's some feed back. Used on HTC Desire (Android 2.2):
1. Navigation is not very intuitive. Pressing menu button brings up a different selection depending on the active tab. To exit Skype (and sign off) you have to be on My info tab.
2. After doing Sign Out (needed in order to exit skype) it no longer remembers the password nor the option to sign in automatically the next time I start it.
3. It does not remember my choice to show only Online contacts. Each time I start Skype it always defaults to showing all.
4. Incoming call ringtone volume is very low, plus no vibration.
5. There is no notification (other than visible one in notificaiton bar) sound nor vibration while Skype is in the background.
Keep up the great work! We've been waiting for this for ages.

Happy with the voice quality as long as it lasted.
Since my first sign out, I can't login again. Uninstalled and re-installed 2 times but no luck! I read that it's a common issue.
That's very dissapointing. I wish they had tested this app more before the release.

Installed it on EVO 4G.
I'm logged into Skype and it has my contacts list.
My EVO is connected to my LAN on WiFi with Mobile/3G/4G all turned off.
I tried to make a call on Skype mobile to my home phone. Every time it gives a little vibrate, no ringing, and it quickly says "Call Failed" and offers no help.
What am I missing?

Guys, just relax you haven't paid for the shit you talking about here, at least they have released it and are working on the bugs for nothing.
Dear Skype: Thanks for releasing the Skype for android and hope to see it on variety of devices with more enhanced features i.e. video chat etc.
It's working on nexus one in uk on 3g and here are some feed backs.
-> The voice quality is improved and is better than any other voip providers.
-> text conversation is very clear.
-> signout automatically when left idle for sometime. i.e. couple of hours+.
-> disconnect sometime while talking for a long time.
-> Skype shows the status is online but the other party see my status offline.
Thanks once again for releasing Skype for android.

mutiny32 commented Wednesday, Oct 6
Well, I hope you guys over at Skype are trying to put the "disallow calling over 3G in the US" on Verizon. Thanks for blocking Fring (I thought you guys wanted to open your protocol?) because it was smaller and worked far better than any of your own mobile apps did and Thanks for pushing me completely over to Fring, who DOES support video calling and is now actually cheaper than your service. I can't wait for the day the Google Voice android app enables video chat and international numbers. You can bet on it happening; now Google-owned Gizmo5 had all of this three years ago on my Nokia N810 which worked flawlessly. On a Maemo (Linux/GNU, just like Android). that's called Meego now. You guys are so boned if you don't get your act together. But considering your long track record of being completely two point releases behind in Linux, I doubt it.
qb89dragon commented Wednesday, Oct 6
I love the app. Call quality is much better than skype on Ubuntu.
However I have to type in my password every time to use it (kinda defeats the point of the save password feature), or sit there and let it eat my battery because you only provide a sign out button, not an exit this app button. As I use it once every few days to make a long distance skype out call, I have no reason to leave it running in the background. An exit button would be an easy and excellent add on feature.

Works pretty great, and is even reliable across switches from 3g to Wifi and back! Wow, that's kind of a big deal because that never worked *at all* before.
One issue I've found on my Droid X though -- I have Skype contacts synced to my native phonebook, but I seem to be unable to actually place a Skype-to-Skype call from my native phonebook to any of those online contacts -- I see no option to do it. I got an option to make a SkypeOut call whenever I was calling anybody, but that's where it started and stopped.

I have set the App to sync my existing Skype Contacts with my Android contacts.
However this doesn't seem to happen. My Skype contacts do not appear to my android contacts.
When i choose the contact source (Phone contacts, google, facebook etc) , Skype appears as a source, but the number of contacts is 0.

Please make it possible to run on devices with larger screens and with LCD Density that is not 240. I use on one device 167 and one 180 and the app just force closes after I press a contact or any other tab. I can only sign-in and scroll.
It seems that the "Activities" of Call/Chat/Info are failing when the size of the screen is reported differently because of the difference in density.

Put me down for HTC Wildfire support too!jamie.houseman commented Friday, Oct 8
Call quality on the test call was abysmal, breaks up and slows down after about 40 seconds. Haven't tried a real call but have no reason to believe it would be any different. Notifications for received messages don't seem to work either on HTC Desire. I did have the actual chat section open but with the screen turned off and phone on standby and receiving a chat message gave me no sound or any kind of notification.
Also going to skype.com/m as indicated about on the HTC Desire states that there is no version available for my phone yet it's available from the Marketplace (where I got it) and works on my phone plus the phone pictured above is a Desire.
jamie.houseman commented Saturday, Oct 9
I too have the same problem with the contacts not showing up on the Desire People app. It shows Skype as a source but incorrectly lists the number of contacts as 0.
Also the app doesn't remember my setting it to log in automatically. Despite this being ticked in settings I still have to type my password in every time.

Just a little word from a "non-Android" user:
For those of you who don't like the fact that in the US you can only use it via Wifi: BE HAPPY! If you were a Blackberry user in any country other than the US and/or not with Verizon, you would not even be entitled to that!
matt.martin232 commented Sunday, Oct 10
Great to finally have this on my mobile!
Still a few issues:
The fact that there are no notification sounds is a real problem as pointed out by a few comments here. The only way you know someone is contacting you is if you happen to be looking at the phone at the time.
Also, whilst in a Skype call, regular calls and texts still come through (which can frighten the life out of you if your phone suddenly starts ringing and vibrating against your ear!)
Will be waiting for an update! Don't keep your customers waiting too long.

@buran4ik unfortunately the screen on the HTC Wildfire is too small to run Skype – you need a minimum resolution of 480x320 pixels.
This explanation is not logic. since its running on my old Nokia E75 with the same resolution like the HTC Wildfire, why it requires more pixel at the HTC? By the way, I installed it on my HTC WF but it shut down as soon as i try to use it. there is no resolution difficulty - but may be my technically understanding is to limited.

kangrex commented Sunday, Oct 10
I'm another disappointed Android user. I've just recharged my credit willing to call home from abroad and I still can't. This is borderline and I'm just about asking for my money back.
1. I just can't sign in. I could once and never again.
2. As I can't sign in again, I can't exit, since it remains in the background and the icon in the status bar
3. After reboot the phone I could finally sign in. But it becomes irresponsible and forces close.
Why Skype rolls out such a bad version. They at least should say it's a beta.

Great first effort. Good to have skype on my phone now. Just a pity it has filled my memory with its 11MB frame! Lets hope the next version allows Android 2.2 users to move the app to the SD card so we can use the phone for other purposes also ;o)
Also a more accessible Exit option on the menu would be a welcomed tweek, rather than having to navigate to the 'Sign out' option through 'Change Status' on the 'My Info' tab. What if I just want to quit the app so that next time I launch it it signs in directly with saved credentials? Lets face it not too many android users can leave these apps running 24/7 as the data usage and battery drain is a killer.

SKype for Andoriod...woo-hoo...well....not REALLY!
It only works on some phones. As many have mentioned, the Galaxy S is the LATEST phone and it is NOT supported...but hey, wait...no problem:
Hi all the Galaxy S users!
I just KNOW that SKype is going to HATE this, and they may remove the post, I dunno, maybe not?
Since Skype is not able to work on a Galaxy S, there's a simple little solution (scary that one has to post a competitor's solution on this site!) - use NIMBUZ
I think it's at www.nimbuz.com, but if you don't find it, the market has it. I think that's where I got mine.
It allows you to login to your skype account and voila!, you're up and running on the galaxy s with skype (well, not skype, nimbuzz, but your skype account). You can even use your skypeout, BUT, even nicer, nimbuz also has their own nimbuzout.
And, the clincher: it supports yahoo, gtalk, winlive and a host of others, so, if you also have a gtalks account (which most people are getting more and more each day because of gmail and google), you can have all your contacts for all your im and telephone/voip in one single app. Even BETTER than just having skype.

Oct 7th, in the USA, with my unlimited plan, I was using Skype to make Skype-to-Skype (S2S) calls over 3G in the US (Verizon) as my WiFi was turned off.
Today I am in Germany - Skype does not make calls at all here because there is no Verizon CDMA service and SKYPE DOES NOT work over WiFi.
Skype - My android device is essentially a brick here. The only apps of any use in Germany are the picture gallery, music collection, browser and notepad.
Other drawbacks are that I can't turn off the the verizon network at all. If I could do that, the phone would work better (battery saving rather that the CDMA signals working at full force to find reception).
Aside from that - If there is an application that holds maps (acquired when 3g or wifi were active & allowed), it would truly be possible to actually map your route across an airplane trip as the airlines allow GPS devices during flight segments. It's rumor that some airlines offer wifi on trips, it's not possible with the inability to independently control cdma, and bluetooth. A side effect of not having a cdma turn off, the constant searchs for sign seem to confuse the system and now have to clear my droid with a battery "pull-n-pop" reset.

sparky2002b commented Monday, Oct 18
Very disappointing. Needs App2SD on Android desperately. 13 megabytes is unacceptable for an Android app. Until you allow Skype to run off the SD card, I'm not reinstalling it.
No 3G calling in the US is unacceptable. iPhone users on AT&T have it. T-Mobile allows it. Why is this feature disabled? Until you allow outgoing calls over 3G, I'm sticking with Fring and their outbound calling service. You've lost another customer out of the hundreds flocking to other solutions after this arbitrary and utter letdown.

It’s free to use Skype in a WiFi zone. If you use Skype with a mobile data connection, operator charges may apply, so we recommend an unlimited data plan.
In the US, you can make calls only over WiFi.
===
Last week, in the USA, with my unlimited plan, I was using Skype to make Skype-to-Skype (S2S) voice calls over 3G in the US (Verizon) -- my WiFi was turned off.
I was totally confused by Skype's message above --- as to whether I am able to make Skype calls over WiFi. However, now I am in Germany -- Skype does not work over WiFi - Despite was written above and Verizon's support line was like talking to a bunch of zeros -- even after my insisting they double-check, they still told me that my DroidX with Skype would work fine. (In Germany, there's no CDMA coverage ... as in Verizon's network.) Advice - Unless there's some workaround, you are better off to take an IPod -- at least you can completely turn off the cdma circuit and just ride on WiFi & bluetooth. If you travel, suffer thru AT&T.
Skype - Tell me if there's a work-around or I am just carrying a brick?

Dear Skype,
Thanks for a great product.
HOWEVER please see if you can get it to work on HTC Wildfire. As you can see many around the world needs this to work on Wildfire.
I just bought this HTC and was told that its an android, so therefore can do Skype on it.
Very frustrated, as now cannot use it.
WHAT I dont understand is why screen resolution should be the problem.
Why cant Skype start out with the basic, like chat and skype phone calls. If video is the problem, then we can wait with that till later. However it would be great to have the basic.
I have Skype on PC, but would be nice to have my contacts to be able to reach me on chat when on the move.
I also have forward calls and all that, but need just that last bit from Skype.
PLEASE look into this HTC WILDFIRE ISSUE.
Otherwise thanks for giving us Skype...

It works on my SGS!! Don't use the Skype internet link - get it direct from the Android market. To make things clear my SGS is as follows
Former Vodafone SGS 16GB totally debranded.
NOT Rooted
Updated to official 2.2 (Froyo)
Baseband version: I9000XXJPM
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9
Build: FROYO.XWJP6
It is basically a 'stock' 16GB without any hacks - I fooled Kies into updating my UK model with the official software from Norway - it worked wonderfully and after a full week of full on use the update is fine.
Skype worked instantly for chat and voice - there is no video option.

im from sri lanka with htc desire running froyo and so far no skype for me. it says my handset is not supported on your website so im guessing that means my country isn't supported.
disappointed in the skype teams lack of transparency on this issue. greece, toga, spain and many other countries have not been able to get this yet and skype doesn't say anything about it.

My main problem with the Skype app is that it constantly runs in the background, even when I'm not signed in.
I use the Advanced Task Killer (Free) and every time I use it, it shows me that Skype is running, even though I never opened it.
So for the time being I won't be using this, since I don't want apps running on their own while I'm not even using them.

So, Skype. Oops. Aside from all the errors above, there seems to be one serious flaw with your application. It cannot work over WiFi only? I am sat in a hotel, Skypeless, because to login the phone must be able to make a data connection to the mobile network data gateway. This means overseas to use Skype, even over WiFi, we must enable data roaming? For most users that causes fear and distress. I simply won't do it and I see no reason in the world to have utilized this method. It is ridiculous. The time you most need Skype and it is un-usable!

Firstly it is unfortunate that the android Skype app does not allow you to rate the quality of your call as you were asked to do on pc based Skype not so long ago. Secondly I make daily calls using my previous (not android) phone using skype and the quality of the call was pretty good. Unfortunately the Android Skype app does not seem to work so well on my HTC Desire and my calls have a truly horrible quality. I have downloaded the new update and am still having the same issues. I truly hope you can sort this quality issue quickly.

Thanks Skype for an almost perfect App but I have noticed that it doesnt refresh very well at all. Friends may be online but my phone shows that they arent or vice versa. It also causes issues when someone is trying to call me. Sometimes works, sometimes not. It takes quite a while to update or refresh online status's so having a "refresh" button or an option where we are able to constantly refresh automatically would make it perfect.

Since I can use the desktop version of Skype to send SMS to cellphones, 1) is it possible to send SMS to phones with the mobile version and 2) if not, will this be available? Thanks for the work on the application!

Cant login into my Samsung Vibrant, please fix it. So many other people are having this issue. I tried deleting the last character as somebody suggested and using the "return" instead of Login button, nothing works.

What 'bout Skype for Android DUO (NGM) ?!? In Italy we use a lot of dual SIM Smartphones .. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Doesnt work on Android 2.1 on the Samsung Sprint Epic. It doesnt let you sign in. But it does work on the leaked Froyo ROM for the same phone. Weird, when you've stated that its available for all Android versions 2.1 and above. I'm not flashing a leaked ROM for the sake of an app just yet.
parkintony commented Thursday, Dec 30
Yet again Skype ignores privacy/security issue with chat! There is NO chat history on/off management. No matter what you do with deleting events history your chat messages stay in phone and reload when you next chat to that contact. (even after killing app - or even removing battery!) Skype appears oblivious to how many users use chat channel to organise calls... and require privacy and security!

As of Friday January 7 2011 @ 23:11 CST
DOES NOT WORK
T-Mobile / HTC MyTouch4g / Android 2.2.1
Skype gives the error, can only be used through a wifi connection.
When connected via wifi, then initiating an international call Error "Another call is alredy in progress" and freezes. (There is NO call in progress at all)
When calling my own home number, local call -- skype pretends to call and stops.
Does not work at all, stays on running in the background and blocks everything. First it will not complete the logging process, and no it logs in but it does not make or receive calls.

Hi Sky team, wonder if you have the installation package for Android 2.2 in ViewPad 7? I hardly find in anywhere for download

It's been passed around 4 months since you rolled out Android version, but it's not working on Galaxy S yet. How long should I have to wait for the fix?

To those of you asking about Skype on the Samsung Galaxy S, please note the advice in our update blog post. You’ll need Android OS 2.2. or later.

I have seen a lot of Users requesting for HTC Wildfire, can you please update us for any version coming for wildfire ?
Thanks...

can't find it in android market, i'm using HTC wildfire. I even had the sms link sent to my phone but can't open. Please fix it and tell me what can i do with it. Thanks.

Doesn't work for me over 3g in the UK, on an HTC Desire. The hardware is there- it works fine over wifi, but the software obviously isn't good enough, as it's very, very choppy over 3g and I can't make out what the person on the other end of line is saying. I've tried my friend's iPhone in the same place (on my windowsill) and it works perfectly. Skype, please fix this!

Skype now appears to be available in the Android Market in Japan.
At first glance seems ok on HTC Desire.

On a Galaxy S, works awesome. Get Froyo and it works just fine.
Question: Any word on video for Android?
oztaurus commented Wednesday, Feb 2
I just got the latest update for Skype on my HTC Desire HD on Vodafone in Australia ... and now it has become very unstable, freezes (black screen) several times a day especially after I flick the contact list up / down to see who's online ... it usually goes one way then freezes when I try to go back to the top. Also it signs me out periodically, even though i think I have set it to stay on continuously ... my other IM packages do not exhibit behaviour consistent with losing signal, so i assume that is not the issue.

Works just fine on my HTC EVO 4G minus the Video... UGH!!! Really want the Video Calling it's the reason I downloaded the app! Skype is useless to me without the video... guess I'll just keep waiting for it :/
pmackrill commented Monday, Feb 7
I am trying to download the skype app thru android market and in that process I get asked to quote 'Choose device on which to install' which is pretty odd as I obviously want it on my mobile device that I am using (HTC wildfire)...on the drop down I get two grayed out options saying 'phone ?' When I try to select either of these options I get a message saying 'this item is not available on your carrier' - and this happens when I take out my sim card too - So who is my carrier? And if I ignore the drop down and simply hit install, nothing happens. Is my phone some how blocked despite being an unlocked version?? I really don't get it...Or is it because I am in Panama?? Something is up here.
