Skype and the Apple iPad
We’ve updated our iPhone app – you can now receive video calls on your iPad.
Update: We've released a quick update to our iPhone app which addresses a couple of iPad teething problems. You can download it now (opens in the App Store). Your feedback is still very welcome though, so keep those comments coming.
As you may have noticed, the Apple iPad has been released in the US today.
We don't yet know how our app will behave on the iPad. Some journalists who had early access have reported that the existing Skype for iPhone app works just fine on the iPad hardware. This is great news, but certainly doesn't give us enough confidence to be able to announce and release an app today as we want to give you the best Skype experience possible.
You can expect to hear more from us about an iPad app in the coming months as we now have our hands on actual iPads and can start tuning and testing.
I'd be very interested to hear from you about your experiences, so please keep me posted, either in the comments below or on Twitter: @peteratskype.

Hmmn, Peter, I don't really know what to make of this.
In the beginning of February I received your announcement of an immanent skype-on-the-iPhone-over-3g app and used that as my excuse for finally buying an iPhone. Two months later, still no iPhone app, which is a bit annoying, but, to add insult to injury, I have been treated to multiple announcements of skype now being available on numerous verizon phones.
I'm not crazy about hearing how you've finally got your hands on an iPad to develop for, I just bought an iPhone based on your announcement....you've had its hardware to develop on for quite a while now.
It just seems like bad form to announce the immanent release of software for one platform and then actually release it for other platforms.
g.ratchford commented Saturday, Apr 3
@ hawleyw: Don't hold your breath on any kind of response from Mr. Parkes. Our company has been waiting for Skype of 3G since last year but Skype mgmt has avoided any discussions--especially since their new arrangement with Verizon Wireless. We're looking at moving over 300 of our people off of Skype to another alternative. Have also started working with our partners to make those changes as well. Skype has proven to be a very unreliable company to deal with--especially signing up with a company (like VZW) that has little clout in the international business community.

Peter:
I currently have skype for Iphone (current version) and would like you to note some technical issues that could use fixing (especially since you plan an Ipad version):
1. The Skype interface with the IPhone headset (the one that comes in the box with the IPhone) does not work well. I get complaints from folks I am talking to that they can not hear me very well. The same headset works just fine over ATT. So it seems like a programming issue on your end.
2. Blue tooth works just fine over ATT, but does not work at all on Skype. Conclusion: Same. Software issue on your end.
Please report this to the folks who can fix it, thanks!

Peter,
Thank you for proactively announcing that there isn't a SKYPE APP for the IPAD. It's a strategically better business decision to the millions of Skype subscribers know now, that "search and wonder."
The FCC, AT&T and Apple all "green-lighted" voice-over-3G six months ago, yet there is still no SKYPE for iPhone 3G APP, despite multiple "promises" (and even an official Skype video) from you and your colleagues indicating that the release of a SKYPE for iPhone 3G APP was imminent two months ago. In my own (humble) opinion, I believe the reason we've yet to see "SKYPE over iPhone 3G" is that AT&T's 3G network in the USA is not yet solid and stable enough to yield the quality of calling over AT&T 3G that SKYPE (rightfully) believes we should experience. While it's likely you don't wish to criticize your "partners" at AT&T or APPLE, unfortunately, SKYPE alone "takes the blame" for not being forthright with its loyal APPLE customer base.
SKYPE is a magnificent product that I've enjoyed since its very beginning. I have multiple "SKYPE-IN" phone numbers and "SKYPE-OUT" subscriptions, yet, I'm admittedly disappointed by the glaring absence of a SKYPE for iPhone 3G APP, and, today, by a SKYPE for iPad APP. To say in your comments that "you'll be working on such an APP" now that the iPad has been released is questionable, given the multitude of other developers who released their IPAD APPs today.
I've been a beta-tester for Google Voice since last year. While I'm loyal to SKYPE and "hope for the best" from SKYPE, you and your colleagues would be well-advised to "know your competition," as Google Voice, even in beta is a magnificent product that far exceeds my expectations, especially with "caller-announce."
I'm sure my fellow, loyal, long-time SKYPE users would very much appreciate your reply to these "constructive" comments.
There's an APP for THAT!
Thank you for your time, Peter.
bencox76 commented Saturday, Apr 3
The coming what? Months?!?! Are you kidding?
This tells me in no uncertain terms that you haven't even started working on it yet. Anyone who had would be in possession of an iPad app that is working beautifully in the Simulator, and would do some debugging and submit. Two weeks max.
No real shock, given how little change has happened to the iPhone app (3G VOIP anyone?). But it is a real disappointment.
If you guys need some help, just let us know - I'm sure community members would pitch in. I met the CEO of Skype Mobile on a plane a couple years ago. He's the guy who made the Skype handset and all the early Skype cellphone apps... this dude had twenty-four different cellphones in his carry-on bag!! He didn't seem as disorganized as you all do. Maybe you need to outsource this to him, too?
Anyway, get with the program. There's a revolution happening here ![]()

I have always been an avid Skype user however, I am very disappointed in the way things have been developing. I would love to see you guys implement 3G calling in on the iPhone and have a better app, same goes for the iPad app! Already there are some awesome companies out there that have already made awesome apps! look at Truphone! their app is gorgeous! Lately Skype has become a thing of the past in my book and I don't think I will be continuing to be a customer or a Skype User. I kind of feel like the direction that Skype is going is kind of stale, just doesn't seem you guys are making good improvements and getting with the time. There are already so many other VOIP over 3G apps out there and already other great VOIP iPad apps. The other thing that has been disappointing me about Skype has been your terrible customer support! One time I had an issue with the service and it took customer service reps over a month to get back to me!
Get with the program! I hate to say these comments but I am being honest to you about my feedback!
rajiv.jawa commented Tuesday, Apr 6
Dear Peter, thanks for your post but as from my previous experience I have no doubt that this is another pre-mature announcement about the Skype for an iPad. You have continuously failed to prove yourself and failed to stick with what you have said. Earlier you were waiting for Apple's approval, then you announced that it will take a while to completely test this app so that you can provide seamless experience to the consumers. But I strongly doubt that you meant what you said...
Just now I have received an update from Skype and its a shame that Skype has failed to provide any major feature requested by many users like me. I know, you are kind of in Monopoly but this does not mean that you can disregard everyone's request. Anyway, you keep doing what you doing.... I will just wait for the better alternative than skype as I am just FED up with you guys...
Sorry about being bit harsh, but eternally I can't speak anything in the favour of Skype....
grkhetan commented Tuesday, Apr 6
Yes -- skype iphone app does not support calls over 3G.
But I have used the Nimbuzz app successfully on the iPhone to connect with the skype network, and voice talk to other skype members over 3G. So I am not that concerned. (i dont use skypeout, so I havent looked whether that works here, but i just talk with other skype members).

Skype's latest update proved that it has in fact sign an agreement with Verizon Wireless to block 3G support for iPhone users. The other interesting thing is that it isn't even available to iPad users who use ATT either.
moosepeak commented Tuesday, Apr 6
Seriously. You can make a new app for the Ipad and you can do just about anything else, but what we all really want is to have VOIP over 3G on our iPhones. Skype is great on the computer, now we just need it when we are on the move.
Peter Parkes commented Tuesday, Apr 6
@bencox76 there are significant differences between developing an app in the emulator and on an actual iPad.
@g.ratchford totally untrue I’m afraid! We’re absolutely committed to the iPhone platform.

WOW i can not believe it, still no 3G network, skype shame on you!!!
morganjadams commented Tuesday, Apr 6
I’m astonished that Push notification and 3G VOIP are not even MENTIONED in this post and release notes. There’s no way I’m going to be spending any more money on Skype. Not only is it close to useless on my primary platform (iPhone OS) but they don’t even communicate openly about these matters. It has been so long since these features were announced that even if the current app is beyond salvaging, they’ve had time to start over from scratch.
bobshafron commented Tuesday, Apr 6
I just tried this new version of Skype on my iPad and the first time I tried it, it told me to go to Network settings and it won't log in. FYI...There are no network settings on an iPad. I then tried it a second time and it worked flawlessly.
jim.arneson commented Tuesday, Apr 6
I just downloaded Skype to my iPad and it seemed to work ok (wifi) except for my Bluetooth headset, which Skype seems to ignore.

Peter,
The one complaint I have of Skype app is that the user cannot put the screen to sleep AND continue to talk on Skype. When I try to put my screen to sleep, Skype puts the call on hold. Skype app uses a lot of energy and I'm trying to save battery life by turning off the screen when I'm making calls. Unfortunately, that doesn't work. Please change this.
Thanks!
lensovetp commented Wednesday, Apr 7
Peter, please tell me this is fricken joke.
You're asking people for iPad experiences?? For a device which is not really that mobile and which was released less than a week ago? Seriously?
Here's a better idea: how about just implementing fixes for UX problems on the already-existing iPhone app, for a device which everyone carries with them and which has been out for nearly 2 years?? Here's a few ideas:
-Support Bluetooth headsets already! This is like one line of code!
-Remove the WiFi restriction on calls. You've had since *October* to do this.
-Add push support. That's been available since July of last year.
I hate to sound so angry, but I am. And before anyone says I shouldn't complain about a free product, I actually have a Skype yearly subscription which I consequently can't use to its full potential because of these restrictions.
I'm looking forward to an update any day now guys. Thanks.
mikesteen commented Wednesday, Apr 7
It really is high time you either released a version for 3G calling or explained why you cannot do so. I'm a Skypeout user and would spend a lot more Skypeout credit when/if this was ever released...
Also the bug where the call is dropped or put on hold when you press the sleep button on the iPhone really, really, really needs to be fixed. It's been there since the beginning.
lawaraj commented Wednesday, Apr 7
its bit weird as i'm having problem with the latest update of Skype on Iphone. I heard an echo of my own sound. it happens as soon as i update skype to the latest version. Is this the new High quality (CD quality) sound or a problem with skype?
amymcdjones commented Wednesday, Apr 7
I was going to buy a Skype subscription because I assumed that it would work over 3G since the voice over 3G ban had been lifted on Apple's side. Now I am most certainly not doing that. There's more to this than just developmental time & call clarity. My guess would be Verizon pays nicely for an exclusivity concerning Skype calls over their network.
Frankly, I'm just sick of all the undercutting in the name of profits and gimped software that is released as a result. Skype on Verizon will never make me switch to Verizon and the lack of Skype customer support is just going to make me cancel my Skype account. Thanks for playing Skype, but in my eyes you've seriously fallen short. I hope the revenue you make off of your Verizon deal more than makes up for the sales you would have had otherwise.
jellybreadracer commented Wednesday, Apr 7
Like the other users I am very disappointed with Skype for iphone. I have just moved to Sweden and thought Skype would take care of all my needs. I bought a subscription in anticipation of the 3G voice calls. I am not even in the US and I cannot even use Skype 3G! My cell phone carrier even has a deal with Skype - The deal with Verizon is affecting even customers in other countries. Anyway, I will get over it and over using skype. But overall, very disappointing -- but like everybody else, I am looking elsewhere for VOIP.
sixxpack11 commented Thursday, Apr 8
I use Skype on my iPod touch, and now on my iPad. I'm not remotely concerned with 3G, but would love to see the ability to add multiple users to calls(like you can on a PC) and the new interface you all are working on. I'm much easier to please then all the other peeps looking for a free way to make calls. So, if you cpuld just focus on my needs and ignore the whiners I would appreciate it.
Thanks
njhunsaker commented Thursday, Apr 8
Hi Peter,
I'd be interested in using Skype with AT&T over 3G also. Either way, I'll continue using Skype with a Wi-Fi connection so that's nice to have. If you're worried that call quality will be worse than what AT&T provides, there's really nothing to worry about there. It seems like dropped calls would "drop" considerably which would boost AT&T's performance. Thank you for continuing to innovate and promising a release of the VoIP feature for 3G. I look forward to being one of the beta testers of this new update as soon as it comes out.
presarioao commented Thursday, Apr 8
Skype in my eye's has now become pathetic, 3G calling has been "allowed" for 6 months now and we are only offered "Its coming soon"
I call bullsh*t.
Stop playing with us Skype, either fess up why you cannot provide 3G calling on the iPhone or get the product out with or without your new fangled audio improvements.
Skype's score: FAIL.
originaldub commented Thursday, Apr 8
Hi Peter,
I think people would be a whole lot less frustrated if you were more transparent and offered up a little more information for us. Would it really be so difficult just to say that we are waiting for the launch of the next iPhone OS or we are currently working on VOIP solution but we have run into some issues? I don't really get the end game here. It is so easy to appease people with simple communication. I have read all of the above posts and I can totally sympathize with them. As an example you have offered one instance of feedback in this form but you never offered up any information just that you are committed to the iPhone and that we are apparently stupid for thinking that building an app using the emulator actually works.
Unfortunately you are no different from the rest of the organization and that is the problem.
And finally, just for the record your comments regarding development for the iPad are pretty bogus. Considering what other companies have been able to do (who also had to develop using the emulator). You could have been working on this for some time now and launched an proper solution a few weeks after launch.
Time to get off your collective a$$es and get back to work - you have grown complacent and arrogant. Or maybe like your Mamma (eBay) you too don't really care that much about your customers.
geemoneysmith commented Friday, Apr 9
Dear Peter (or whom it may concern),
I am a consumer on the outside looking in and this is what I see:
I see a company that has a massive install base, not just in the USA but worldwide which is no easy feat and something to be proud of for sure. The VOIP over 3G ban was lifted and while I was expecting to see Skype-over-3G(also ready to buy an iPhone plus Skype yearly subscriptions) there was instead nothing except "coming soon".
The real kick in the teeth came when out of no where, the Verizon-Skype partnership was announced leaving everyone else puzzled. My only question at this point is, "Was it worth it?" Was it worth it to sign a contract with Verizon a.k.a Big Red (how fitting a name) and lose so much already existing and potential customers?
How much subscribers does Verizon have to date? 80 Million maybe? How many of those have Blackberry/Android devices? Lets be generous and say 25%, so 20 Million....and how many will actual use Skype? 10% or 2 Million...so lets go back and look at the big picture...
You took 2 Million POTENTIAL Verizon subscribers over your already existing worldwide install base of 50+ Million??? Wow...just wow. I hope the company got a lot of money from Verizon for that move.
Lets not act like blind fools, we are people not dumb animals. It's very clear and OBVIOUS that the contract with Verizon is going to block the iPhone/iPad app from operating over 3G, especially since it's an "exclusive" contract. My only hope at this point is that Skype will learn a thing or two about contracts and why they're so bad during their venture with Verizon.
As for myself, my friends, family, and company...currently searching for another solution.
im1000000man commented Friday, Apr 16

2.-Fring
3.-Wait and maybe in OS 4.0 we'll get that...
My favorite: Turn into the dark side (#1)... And for those who can't (stock 3.1.3 3GS) just use #2... ![]()

Dear Mr. Silverman
I wanted to post this blog and tell you about my personal experience with your customer service department. I spoke with Rita. On April 17, of this year my skype credit was almost $10 USD. I have had an unlimited account with your company for 1 year and have been satisfied with my service. I purchased that credit on February 9, 2010 and at that time I also went under my payment options and changed my credit card information.
On Feb 14 of this year skype tried to run an automatic renewal charge and it failed. I found out today (by my own research Rita was no help at all) that skype tried to renew my acct with my old credit card information which had since been closed.
Today I went online and renewed my unlimited plan manually because my phone quit working and i could not make a call.
The reason I IM'ed customer service was to find out why my renewal didnt go thru and also to get a credit for the $10 that your company had been using up in my acct thru per minute charges. Rita kindly told me that she was not authorized to fix the incorrect charges on my acct even though Skype tried to authorize the charges on the wrong card. She was more than happy to cancel my account all together though and refund the brand new unlimited plan i just paid for.
Mr. Silverman here is my question. Why would you lose a paying customer over a $10 charge that was your companies error, Instead of just fixing it and apologizing? I was so frustrated by your customer service that i agreed with her and let her close my account. She happily refunded the $35 yearly subscription but refused to fix the $10 billing error.
Mr. Silverman I was satisfied with your technical service so much so that I cancelled my unlimited long distance on my home phone and was using your service exclusively on my I-phone. Mr. Silverman you need to give your customer support agents more authority to fix your companies billing issues and keep the good paying customer you have. This was my first call to your customer support and unfortunately it will probably be my last. I want to give my money to a company who actually treats its customers who have issues with as much respect and ease as the ones it just signed up.
Respectfully

I am running Skype on my iPad and noticed that when using a Bluetooth stereo headset, the Skype application for iPhone does not recognize the headset for use. It only uses the internal speakers. When I use other applications such as MLB 2010, or play a movie, the app I am using recognizes that I am using a Bluetooth device. This would indicate it is application driven whether or not it uses the Bluetooth device. I would love to see this addressed in a later release. It would make skype much more useful.

I just started up Skype for my iPad and used it successfully with the built in speakers and mic. It is a 3G model but unactivated for 3G.
I ordered a tethered earbud/mic setup to use for traveling until the bluetooth models come down in price and are debugged.

@milankalus - I am sorry but you are an idiot - you obviously don't know a whole lot about Skype. The app may be free but to get the full use out of Skype you have to buy paid calling subscriptions which many of us have done - so in essence it is not free.
People are complaining because Skype over the last 6 months have repeatedly told us that they would be releasing these products. As a paying customer I have every right to complain. So keep your ignorant comments to yourself until you actually have a clue about what you are talking about.

Tired of waiting and don't want to jailbreak your iPad 3G? You have other options (given you already forked money over): Fring, Vopium, and TruPhone. Fring supports incoming video calls.
Until then, we likely won't get any update for a universal (iPhone/iPad) application until this summer, with iPhone OS 4.0.

I'm not sure why everyone is saying "shame on Skype." I'd much rather have a tested product on my phone than one with which I'm dissatisfied because it breaks. I just downloaded the new version of the iPhone edition of Skype and I see that it has 3g support.
I'm a bit skeptical of using the 3g network for voice because of latency issues, but I'm glad to see that the capability is now there. Skype sure knows that the iPad demographic is one it wants to keep happy, so I bet we'll see an iPad-specific app ... that has been tested ... before long. I, for one, am willing to wait a little bit longer.

Wow... some people get pretty crotchety over, frankly, not so much. There's too much real stuff going on in this world to get so mad/sling so much mud about someone releasing an "app" a bit late.
That said, I'm also looking forward to a (good) iPad version. Especially after a pretty good experiences using the iPhone version. We spend a lot of time in Europe and called back to the U.S. on mother's day. When our usual "callback" option didn't work right, I took out the iPad and made the call to our mother-in-law's land line.
Yes, of course it cost call minutes, but an hour call was... what something less than $1.50 or so? Maybe a little less or more. But seriously cheap and highly effective. It was comparable to doing a call on a regular speakerphone.
I'm one of those annoying Apple fans, and resolutely used (still use) iChat. However, Skype is also a great option to have. Good luck with writing the iPad app.

Hello Peter,
I had a rather simple question, why is it that you choose NOT answer most questions in regards to 3G(3g for the iphone with VOiP) and why it has take such a long time for an established company, such as yours, to still not be able to launch that for the iPhone?
To be quite honest, me being a developer and all, its not that hard to get your team to build on the existing application and make the changes for several things such as, iPad, iPhone 3G Voip, ...
The interesting thing is that I am not sure why I wasted the last 45 seconds writing this comment as given your past history, I am not sure anyone in your company really is in a high enough pay-grade to answer the simple questions asked above.
Thanks(for probably nothing),
JR
P.S. I will be terminating my account with your company, as well with out small little firm. There are several alternatives out that are due to surpas Skype as a company in the near future! Do you think it is enough for iPad? Using iphone apps in iPad is such a stupid thing. No need to use iphone apps in iPad. It should have done an iPad apps weeks ago with better keybord options. I am thinking like eesaramez, I will not use Skype anymore and I will cancel my automatic payment and maybe I will delete my acount. No need to use it which has no responsibles for the users demands. Aim made a very good apps which has a good chat and also Msn and Facebook support. It also has a feed support in it and Truphone made their iPad version as soon as possible and it works great and it looks decent. But no capability of video calling. Any ideas as to any solution to this problem?
editorssw commented Thursday, Jul 1
Will someone please tell me why anyone would want Skype AND 3G? The great thing about Skype is that it's a money saver. I pay $60./year for a telephone number and service that has voice mail, conference calling, caller i.d., video calling and other options. WHY would I add the cost of a cell phone provider? I don't use a cell phone. I use Skype only. Wifi is nearly everywhere now. Sure, I can't use it while I'm driving, but that isn't safe anyway.

Dear Peter,
I just bought an iPad today and the first thing I tried to do was to get into Skype. So, skype is a MUST in the iPad platform!
Good to know you guys are already working on that.
Thanks.

Here's my experience with Skype on the iPad: it's July 1st, I'm still running the iPhone version and there's not so much as a peep about an iPad version.
I can however, rest assured with the knowledge that Skype has opened a new office on the other side of the world, so at least I have that going for me.

I have no iPhone app to compare with, but the iPad works fine for phone calls. Just set up account with a new user and the phone quality on the iPad, TX to CA, clear and great. Excellent! Waiting for the (one way) video..but since I can see webcams in other apps, I'm guessing Skype will work that way soon. Might even now...searching the blogosphere for that, which what brought me here. Long line of both solid help and gripes! But comments helpful ...thanks!

I'm very disappointed with skype, they did a great job with the app for iphone, but it's not acceptable that they didn't create an ipad app yet, using the iphone app looks disgusting on the ipad, my father cancelled his account because of that, the app doesn't have to be perfect on the first day, later they update, they are loosing lots of clients because of no update for iphone 4, ios4 and ipad, I hope you release it soon.

I initially tried the download from app store on my iPad and it didn't work. This version worked straightaway. I definitely looking forward to a proper version for the iPad though, can't wait. Keep up the work guys, great app! JosephMedia.co.uk.

Joining the previous commenters. It's been 3 months since the iPad came out, and clearly it shouldn't take a major company this long to update their app with what is mostly UI cosmetics. iPhone app works perfectly on the iPad - so I'm assuming it's mostly interface work to be done?
Of course, push notifications would be great also. Third-party chat clients can notify me of new IM messages on Facebook or Google Talk, why can't Skype?
Now that I think of it - UI is the biggest issue I have with Skype in general. As a Mac/iOS user, I guess I'm spoiled.
lior.mayo commented Monday, Jul 12
Hi guys, it's been quite a long time that the iPad is out there.
The skype app is ok, bit the UI is BAD, when will you update ?
brazilfox808 commented Tuesday, Jul 13
I have been using Skype (including Skype Out) in my iPad 3G with no problems.
When I use through ATT 3G, it tells me that I can make free Skype calls via 3G until August. (But remember that voice and video takes a lot of data and you'll soon use up your monthly ATT mileage.)
But I agree with the previous post (UI). The Skype app is the same for the iPhone, therefore does not take advantage of the nice bigger screen of the iPad.
Otherwise, it works just fine and perfect, except the fact the iPad has no video camera, and there's nothing Skype can do about that.
bkorfker commented Thursday, Jul 15
What would be super cool is if you guys at Skype could somehow use the iPhone camera as a camera for Skype video chat on the iPad. There are already apps that use the iPhone camera for stills on the iPad. Even when the iPad gets a camera, holding the iPad in the right position will be inconvenient, so this solution would add a lot of flexibility. There would be a button in the iPad app, and a stand alone app on the iPhone to share the camera!
Please make this possible!
robbyleenyc commented Friday, Jul 16
Hi Peter,
Fix the blutooth headset problem & you're on your way to a winner. The headset should also receive a push tone/indicator when being used for iTunes/pandora etc. & the phone switch like on the Motorola s305 should be recognized for easy call pick up.
Regards,
Rob

Hi Peter,
I have downloaded and installed the Skype app for the iPAD. While all works OK I would say the key thing resolve is getting Skype to remain active in the bakground to others can still see that you are on-line even though you may be running othr aps in the forgrnd. Currently if I hit the home button after using Skype I get automatically logged off.

I know no one will answer my questions but i just wanted to give out some coments on this stuff, first of all, why are all of you people taking this so personal, its not Skype's fault you just demand more than hell. I'm happy using Skype even if it's not exactly as I want it to be. I use Skype on my iPad and well, it's nice but will there be an iPad specific app soon? We iPad users are sort of tired of having to work with iPhone apps at 2x, it's not the same and it doesn't feel good. Don't get me wrong, I love Skype and really think this is a good product but well, it still needs some improvements. Hope there would be an iPad specific app that looks similar to the Mac version of Skype. Will this be possible some day? Or is it just me dreaming?
victor.lucas.martino commented Wednesday, Jul 21
Ok, I know the app is free so we shouldn't say anything about it, but it's so not fair!
Skype was updated today for IOS4?
iPad users have waited months to get an ipad skype version, but IOS4 was only released a month ago, and after all this waiting, no iPad update?
Please release the app for iPad, again it doesn't have to be perfect on day 1, I'm freaking out because I use skype a lot, every 12 hours I open the appstore to see if there is an update, please, I'm begging you, release the app for god's sake!

mbazdar commented Tuesday, Jul 27
You do not need Peter for this question, I can give you an answer. No, Skype for iPad will not support Video calls, from one simple reason; iPad has no camera!
We need just one simple thing in future Skype for iPad, just support for iPad screen resolution.

I just test many others voip clients for ipad (or compatible ipad), like isip, softphone, media voip, fring and whistle. No one beat Skype quality. It't like Skype took an arrangment with Apple to have the best quality... I'm using Telus Canada at 20$ per month for the internet. Now, when reading all those articles, it remember me in 2006 when i trash skype because of sound quality. Maybe Verizon has the control over Skype, Like oil company has control over electric car

The only thing I really know is when i start to be unsatisfy, i change the provider.
ssdeg7 commented Thursday, Jul 29
It's true, the iPad was released quite a long time ago and still no iPad app, well I find myself using everyday more and more Skype for iPad and still no native app, well that's quite disappointing, because it made its way to my dock in the iPad and it's the only app that I have to use at 2X and with no push notifications which by the way obliges me to exit the app once I need to do something else.
I like Skype but would really like to know when will the iPad app be released if it will, please give us a date and we most certainly wont bother anymore, but we need to know if we'll have to wait 5 months more or just some weeks.

I hope that the new version of skype could have this feature and not have to depend of third party companies

Dear Peter,
I really don't understand why Skype can't grasp the fact that people want an iPad app out asap even if it doesn't DO anything more than the iPhone app. They just want it to look nice on the iPad. All the extras can come later. I assume that the hold off has a lot to do with ios4... If so why don't you just say so. In the absence of an iPad app I know it would make me feel better as a skype customer to AT LEAST have an estimated date for when you guys think you can release an iPad app.
Skype's business is communication. Why can't skype COMMUNICATE with it's customers?
Give the customers an app, or give them an ETA. Simple.

For a head honcho whose job is blogging he's very quiet when it comes to answering any type of question other than with his stock "I don't know what more you want- we're working on it" answer.
What we want, Peter, is a straight eta...

More than likely they are waiting for IOS4 - I know more than a few awesome apps that won't be released until IOS4 is on the iPad simply because they need the added API's that are in there.
It sucks, but it'll be worth the wait.

Does Skype+iPad+Bluetooth stereo headsets (Backbeat 903) work?
All other apps work except Skype. Seems like a Skype issue?
Peter Parkes commented Wednesday, Aug 18
@dsam2000 Skype doesn’t support Bluetooth headsets on the iPhone or iPad – the way iOS works means that we can’t send audio to them with high enough quality.
solutions_for_business commented Thursday, Aug 19
The basic issue here is my 3GS iphone+old Skype app lasted 20 hours without charge and after the upgrade to new Skype app battery life reduced to 5 hours [or less] due to Skype running in background, nothing else has changed. This is unacceptable and ceases to be a viable iphone app for the business traveller or anyone who does not have access to electricity i.e going hiking for the day. The user must have an option to activate/deactivate background running.

Not technical enough to understand comment re iOS. Jabra Extreme pairs with ipad no problem. Have tried Jabra Extreme headset with Skype on my Toshiba laptop and works great. And whilst you on it could you look into ways of linking the iPhone cam over blootooth to your soon to be released iPad ap. That would really make sense. And of course an apps that can use the face cam of iPhone 4 is a must too. Seen your placement of an ad for an iPad developer, reads like an add to apply for the post office. Skype ought to hire someone from Apple who is familiar with the HIG (human interface guidelines). You ought to offer them triple wages to what Apple paid them, as your AWFULLY designed app badly needs an overhaul & defragmentation on ALL PLATFORMS, because your sense of how humans interact with software is a total mess!
You sign into Skype sometimes, and your contacts don't appear. Sign out then again, and suddenly they appear? WTF? Also, what's with having about 5 separate windows JUST FOR ONE VOIP APP?
Go back to school, you corporate monkeys - you know nothing about humans OR design.

Consumers who lock themselves into Apple products have such a sense of entitlement. They seem to always be griping that third party developers are too busy looking after their major customer base and not babysitting their interests.
Apple customers: before you extend your brand loyalty by buying another Apple-branded product, know that sitting on the sidelines waiting to join the action is part of deal.

Peter:
The trend in your responses is rather worrying.
April: you'll hear more in the next months
June: working on it, just want to take a little longer to make sure it works
November: nothing to tell
Basically, based on what you have posted, no new information in nearly nine months.
Skype is obviously free to allocate its develoment resources as it pleases. And the iPhone app works on the iPad as a stopgap measure. However, it is hard to fathom why Skype chooses to communicate with a fast growing user segment (there are more than 10 million iPad users out here) in such an off-handed and disdainful manner.
If a proper iPad app is not on the roadmap, please let us know. If it is planned for Q something next year, please let us know. Even bad news is better than being hung out dry the way we are now.
As a long-time loyal Skype user, I feel rather disappointed with your chosen (non-)communication strategy.

My first hour with the iPad, and I was making calls with Skype (the iPhone app - I didn't find an iPad app). I was disappointed when I went to make notes or read a web page - the call got cut off.
I resolved this by READING THE GETTING STARTED GUIDE - the part where it says multitasking.
For those of you who have not read it....
You minimize Skype (and leave it running) by double clicking the home button! So, yes. It is possible to talk on Skype and do other things at the same time. If you are on facebook or just drawing, and you receive a call - it pops up and rings. When you answer the call, one touch and you pop over to the Skype program.

Some of us are paid users, myself having one personal Skype number and one paid by the company I work for. These are my only phones and are in use all day for calls to clients world wide and also corporate conference calls and chats. That said, there is a sense of urgency in getting SOMETHING for the iPad, considering all the money we spend with Skype per year. I don't care about video, this is not a toy, but a business tool. We do, however, use screen sharing for presentations and training.

The Skype team has 10 days now until the 1 year mark of this post. We, the Skype community, have been patiently awaiting to "hear more from [Skype] about an iPad app in the coming months."
The thing about coming months is, they just keep coming. It's like repeatedly going to the store to find it closed with a "back in 10 minutes" sign posted.
Let's be clear. Every respondent to this post wants an actual native iPad app designed specifically for the iPad, and not just an iPhone app running in 2x mode.
Can we at least have some news concerning the actual intention of releasing an iPad app? This post makes no mention of this intention, but takes a wait-and-see attitude. We've waited, and now see the iPad as the #1 dominant tablet platform, along with the release of a completely new iPad 2 model.
The demand is high, the time is now. When Skype, when?

Sype, you are becoming less and less relavant. With no information coming about a native iPad 2 app, I have now turned to other Apps/services. Facetime is a good App (even if there are fewer clients right now). Plus, it's iPad 2 native! For the past two years, I have had an Sykpe unlimited outgoing calling subscription. I am now voting with my dollars by canceling that subscription due to an apparent lack of interest on the behalf of Skype in keeping up with what the customer wants.

paul-oshea commented Monday, Apr 4
It's just beyond belief that Skype do not have an iPad app. Look at this thread, the original post was 1 YEAR AGO!
Look at the amount of users who are crying out for this feature and what do you get from Skype? Absolutely nothing. Skype won't even acknowledge anything or let you know an iPad app is in the works.
What is the first thing an iPad 2 owner is going to do with their video calling device? That's right, straight to the app store to download the app from the largest video calling provider in the world hands down. What do they find when they get there? An already poor iPhone app trying to run on the iPad 2 with little success. I know, I will check the Skype blog for information on an iPad app, there must be one in the works surely?
Wow, a year old blog post with not a single update from Skype.
Useless.
I'm with some of the other people on this thread, due to Skype's poor communication and refusal to move with the times I'm a paying Skype customer who will be looking elsewhere.
aschrock2000 commented Thursday, Apr 7
I just uploaded the Skype App to my iPad 2 and one word comes to mind.....disappointed. The 2x feature is a half a** attempt at a band aid solution, the app becomes pixelated and grainy and you don't have the option of using the built in keyboard function that is already native to the iPad. It is a shame that it has been over a year and that Skype has had PLENTY of time to develop an iPad compatible app but to no avail! I can't imagine that the Skype team doesn't have the resources to develop an iPad compatible app with as popular as this program is.....
