Skype + Verizon Wireless join forces - BlackBerry and Android apps coming to US in March
Skype has joined forces with Verizon Wireless, the largest and most reliable mobile network in the US.
From March, you’ll be able to get Skype on a wide range of Verizon Wireless phones, including BlackBerry Storm 9530, Storm2 9550, Curve 8330, Curve 8530, 8830 World Edition and Tour 9630 smartphones, as well as DROID by Motorola, DROID ERIS by HTC and Motorola DEVOUR. I know that many of you have been waiting for these apps, particularly those for BlackBerry and Android, and it’s great that we’re now able to offer them to people across the US.
With Skype mobile on Verizon, you’ll be able to:
- make and receive unlimited free Skype-to-Skype voice calls to anyone on Skype around the globe
- call international phone numbers at our low rates
- send and receive instant messages to other Skype users
- see your friends’ online status
In the video above, Skype CEO Josh Silverman and Russ Shaw, VP and GM of our mobile division, talk more about the background to our relationship with Verizon. It’s a very exciting step forward in the world of Skype on mobile – and stay tuned for more news on how you can get hold of Skype on your Verizon phone between now and March.

It will be nice to see a mobile Skype app worthy of the name. I hope it is made available on all Android phones and not just Verizon's.
@soulatrium That'd require Apple's assent, and I don't think that's likely.
jay97russo commented Tuesday, Feb 16
This Verizon deal sounds exciting, but it sounds like the app will only be available for Verizon Android devices. Is this true?
The main appeal of Android for me is the fact that the OS is the OS, independent of carrier or phone model. The reason that I'm not an iPhone owner is that I don't want to be locked in to one carrier or device.
Skype team, if you're going to develop a mobile version of your software for Android, please make it available to anyone with an Android phone, not just Verizon devices.
rfdparker2002 commented Tuesday, Feb 16
Yes, I agree with @cleduc and @jay97russo - while it's great to see that you are getting free data-based Skype access for users of one the US' largest carriers, the more important factor to people like myself (I'm on T-Mobile in the UK, I previously had a G1, and now a Nexus One) is that your making a full data-based Android application to replace the 'Lite' app you produced way back at the launch of the G1, and hence is getting very long in the tooth by this point.
I certainly hope and expect that you'll get this on the Android Market for everyone as soon as you get this Verizon partnership going, so that while those on Verizon and 3 can benefit from free access, others can still take advantage of your service, if only it eats a bit at their data allowance.
toddtownsend commented Tuesday, Feb 16
Congratulations Josh & Russ - great announcement and step towards a more open calling structure. Few questions/clarifications:
1. Like the upcoming IPhone app, will this product use the SILK codec, at least for Skye-Skype calls? One of the greatest draws to Skype for me is high quality voice. This will be a huge deciding factor for some.
2. Is Skype presence signaled over 3g, then call connected over circuit switched? Is this the reason Verizon is still requiring a voice plan or is it a revenue grab?
3. I used Skype for Windows Mobile on a Verizon XV6700 back in Jan '06 over 3g. Worked fine, except some occasional delay. Is EVDO packet R/T times (vs. LTE) the reason not to make this a pure IP application?
carlhancock757 commented Tuesday, Feb 16
Who cares about Skype for Verizon... RELEASE SKYPE OVER 3G FOR THE iPHONE ALREADY!
It's frustrating as a Skype user and an iPhone owner that AT&T and Apple have both lifted the VOIP over 3G restriction yet Skype still hasn't released an update to their iPhone app to enable this functionality.
I'd be rocking Skype for EVER call I make on the iPhone if you guys would release the thing...
You are going to get more users of your iPhone Skype App than Verizon is going to bring you... unless they eventually get the iPhone.
UPDATE SKYPE FOR iPHONE!!! The waiting is agonizing...
kevin.m.bauer commented Tuesday, Feb 16
Is this app going to be for Verizon only? Will BlackBerry users on AT&T be able to use the app?
toddtownsend commented Tuesday, Feb 16
USA Today reports that the Verizon app will not work over WIFI - so much for a "full" client.... Hoping that Google cuts a VOIP only deal with Google Voice. I'll drop Skype for that.
toddtownsend commented Tuesday, Feb 16
Due to no wifi with this client, does that mean Skype is not developing a full version for Android at all? Will they develop a full version with neutered WIFI for Verizon, but open to other carriers?
chiefwrecka74 commented Wednesday, Feb 17
Hi guys, and congrats on combining Verizon & Skype. I have one question though. The users that have unlimited country or unlimited world, would they be able to make unlimited call to mobiles and landlines or would the be charged a small fee? The reason for the question is that the user already paid for the subscription for the unlimited services and is also paying for unlimited data service through their carrier provider. I would like to know comments and answer on this cause it would not make sense that you have these services and you are still paying extra to use them.
elysiumridge commented Wednesday, Feb 17
You can use Skype on Android now. Just download Fring from the app market and buy a skype # for $4 to $6.00 per month depending if you buy the unlimited calling for $3 per month; and then you can make and will receive calls anywhere that your android is in wifi range, which for me works great in locations where I have wireless internet but poor cell coverage.
Good Luck.

stacey.cherny commented Tuesday, Feb 23
Typical, Skype is only concerned about carrier deals. I want to use VoIP on my Android phone over wifi, but Skype isn't interested in those customers. Fortunately, Google Voice provides for free what Skype charges for, and I can talk to other Skype users via Fring. (I switched to Google Voice because I couldn't renew my unlimited US & Canada at the rate that was offered on my account---when it came time to pay, the renewal rate was higher.) Skype has a done a good job of pushing away customers.
eric12341 commented Thursday, Feb 25
how dare they stop supporting windows mobile in favor of this? this is no different than a restaurant saying "from this point on we will only serve white people because they tip more and are more polite" its discrimination and it isnt fair! ¡¡malditos desgraciados crétinos asquerosos!!.
hecatombercm commented Friday, Feb 26
I use Skype specifically for the Windows Mobile App. I have unlimited US and Canada, and just pay ATT $20 prepay a month for unlimited data. I use wifi when I do not have a good 3g signal. I use Google Voice for the free Text Messages. GV in combo with Skype is a complete alternative to U.S.A wireless carriers and I hope to keep it stays that way. I have gotten many friends to buy a windows mobile phone over the Skype app alone.

Wow...Only 10 months late and not really worth waiting for as tied into a US network...There are other countries that have wi-fi capability guys or are you only interested in allowing calls from the US to the rest of the world??! Think google voice might be a better option as it reaches across borders to satisfy the entire world.

lacojim commented Friday, Mar 19
I would guess that Droid and Android phones will contain Google Voice at some point, thus Skype may not want to even try and compete with Google. March is nearing the end, I am guessing that bugs have appeared, or other unknown issues, or we would have seen Skype for the Blackberry by now. After all, Skype for Blackberry was originally announced almost a year ago. Can we all say it together: VAPORWARE!!!

Why doesn't Verizon allow to make calls to local lines and cell phones? I would be the first customer if Verizon did. Nobody needs the option you offered.

Get rid of your BB and buy a nokia E71 or E72 and download nimbuzz or fring[will also let you make videocalls] it does all that a BB does but gives you more scope for VOIP via wifi or 3g - everybody happy now??

Downloaded today and kicked the tires on it. Works great with one big problem. A short time after a call is placed, it reboots my Storm2. If you sign in, all is fine, but shortly after talking to another Skype user it will crash the Storm2. I tried this several time during the day with the same results. Maybe there is something I missed with respect to running this APP.

And I like my NExus One, one of the best phones I have ever owned. I use to have the IPHONE (AKA POS) and used skype on IPHONE. I am loving Skype on my BB 9530 on VZW. However I do have an issue. It seems that anyone can leave IM's on the mobile Skype even though I have the appropriate privacy settings in place on my main,(pc), account. There is no way to prevent this as of yet. The mobile app has no provision to bolster privacy settings. Is this going to be corrected anytime soon?

WHAT A TOTAL LET DOWN!!! LIMITATION WITH VERIZON AND SKYPE ALREADY FOR SKYPE BUSINESS OWNERS!
I just spent 2 hours on the phone with Verizon to find out that if you have your own phone number with Skype (not your Skype IP) FOR EXAMPLE 954.345.**** and someone call those Skype numbers it will not ring through to your blackberry device that has the new Skype application installed. ONLY people calling you from a Skype application using your Skype ID will work.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? This renders this application totally useless to business owners using Skype. I current pay Skype over $150 a year for 3 phone number for my business and I can not use them to receive call to my backberry Skype application.
WHAT A TOTAL LET DOWN!

Guess what my latest Google search was..."alternatives to Skype". I've been waiting a long time for a Skype application for my Blackberry so I was a bit disappointed to discover that I would have to move to the US and subscribe to Verizon to get it and then that it wouldn't work on Wi-Fi. I am sure that Skype plans on releasing a version for all other Blackberry users around the world. It would be nice to have a bit more explanation from Skype about their plans for Blackberry.
hi-michi commented Wednesday, Apr 14
I have been using the Skype app for my 8330 Curve.. my only issues are with the IM functionality..
There is no way to paste text from another app into the IM window.
For me, this is essential as I communicate via Skype IM with contacts in Japan and on my PC, I use Japanese text entry.
Since Verizon REFUSES to support Japanese (Chinese or Korean) text entry on their phones, I have to use a workaround involving a translation app and then I copy and paste that text into the other app (BB Messenger, AIM, MSN, Twitter, etc.) Since Skype Mobile does not support a "paste" function, I can not do the same thing I can do in many other apps I run.
Also, I am used to clicking the trackball twice to send an IM. I do it this way on every IM app I use. This app requires the use of the return key. This is just going to take getting used to.
Besides these UI issues and unclear and weak support for alerts, it's a pretty good app.

I have a Verizon Storm 8530 and there is no Skype applications for it???? Only the Storm 2 8550 and the Tour. I was told by Verizon is because they have WiFi.
I also have a Moto Droid and I think a much better smart phone with one flaw.... it is not a try mode international phone like the Storm 1 Storm 2 and Tour. The min Verzion and Moto come out with an Android quad world phone I will dump my crapy Storm 1.
The Skype app works well on the Droid and I can use the Moto Droid to call my Skype ID on the computer and I can skype the Moto Droid as well both free of charge. All I want is the skype app for the 8530 or a quad Moto Droid world phone. There is always a catch with cell phones.
techmd commented Thursday, Apr 29
Skype without WiFi is next to useless. Everyone is so concerned about USA use here! The real drawback is when I am overseas, away from Verizon's coverage area. If Skype would work with WiFi I could use it in my overseas client's offices to handle my internaitional calling to and from the USA. As it is now, when I am without Verizon coverage I can't use Skype...if I have Verizon coverage, there is no need to use Skype....

woodyofid commented Tuesday, May 4
So for those of us who have no desire to switch to Verizon, when will we get a Skype client for the Blackberry? Do we lack value as users and customers to Skype? While useful, Skype will not move me to Verizon. What it does instead is continue to ask co-workers and customers to use and alternative means of communication (eg: Google Talk or MSN). This reduces the likelihood of myself and those people of having a need or desire to utilize paid Skype services.
Peter Parkes commented Wednesday, May 5
@christine_burnside sorry to hear you’re having problems – you should get in touch with Verizon Wireless support about this.
@woodyofid I can’t make any promises about a non-carrier-specific BlackBerry app unfortunately. It’s a very important platform to us, but there are inherent challenges to developing a good Skype experience on BlackBerry devices. Working with carriers like Verizon Wireless helps us overcome those challenges, which is why we’re able to offer the BlackBerry app through VZW in the US.

Just one thing to say...the Skype app for Android should allow for access over WiFi. There's no excuse for not allowing this. Skype is a VOIP app and therefore should utilize all options. Having to use my Verizon minutes to make a domestic Skype call is just plain stupid, might as well just call the person's phone and bypass Skype altogether. The only benefit for me with this app is to call my folks back in the UK from my cellphone but then I might as well use my computer with my webcam and get a video call going. Screwed this one up pretty good, Skype.

Peter Parkes commented Sunday, May 30
@huy8dang yes, we do hope to be able to remove the restriction in future. Stay tuned!
pafrahar commented Friday, Jun 4
Glad to hear it Peter, the restriction makes it a worthless app cluttering storage space. I am not willing to leave my WiFi turned off just in case I get a Skype call, but if I turn the wifi on the Skype app breaks the connection. Seriously? I also travel to places where I have wifi but no Verizon connection, and would love to have access to Skype there (and Verizon would lose no revenue in the process!). Until then, I leave Skype off on my phone unless I need to initiate a call or chat.

Second : When I try to access the web browser to get to Skype: Verizon has BLOCKED my sign in page from coming up. I CANT LOG INTO SKYPE.
Third: Take this Verizon conection out and SKYPE works as directed. Verizon is forcing me to spend more MONEY. I spent nine hours on the phone with Verizon to figure out that this relationship is a way for Verizon to control my Skype usage........

I may have just signed a new contract but I promise you, there won't be a next time. immortaljman commented Thursday, Jul 29
Worthless without the ability to use WiFi. The reason I would use it is not to replace my wireless carrier because the call quality is better there if I'm in the network. It's when I travel outside of my network like in England where you can't use CDMA or many other countless countries. Put WiFi into the app to make Skype the innovative app that it once was.
eric.chez commented Friday, Jul 30
SKYPE, technology should not be restricted just because carriers are scared that users may stop using voice and going all full data, perhaps just use wifi to make call. You provided this technology to millions of users on desktops without any problems, why limit it to certain carriers and smartphones?
Providing skype to all smartphones and all carriers is the way to go, im sure Skype, such a big company like you are, can make this happen either way.
I'd like to also add, denying FRING access to Skype shows the users puts a bad image on your company.
ashvince commented Tuesday, Aug 3
This is probably why they started blocking Fring since it would have been a more open competing product.
To be honest, I could not care less about voice calling via skype and saving a few pence since I never user my call allowance anyway. Not having a way of sending text messages via the skype network on my mobile is damn inconvenient though.
Please have a thought for those of us who only use it as a messaging app because it has a widely installed user base. Is there any chance of getting some sort of simple app that does only this and will use wifi when available?

I use Skype for inexpensive calling to landlines within domestic US when I travel, via web-enabled computer. This lets me retain a lower-cost limited minutes cell plan. I just bought a Verizon/Android web-enabled phone and plan. For me, the "elephant in the room" -- not very clear in all the posts about Verizon and Skype here -- is that when I tried to use Skype via my cell phone app to call a landline in the US, a message popped up telling me *Verizon* call plan would be charged. Yuck!!!
I'm glad Skype has found a way to increase its revenues, but it's not helping me avoid cell phone callikng minutes on my Verizon plan.

I am about to dump Verizon for Sprint's Epic 4G which has a front facing camera - which will also mean dumping my Skype International plan which I pay for each month --- since it only works with Verizon's Android phones.
Not knowing if it was Skype's decision to limit to one carrier, it is unfortunate for us (since Google also threw in the towel), that as technology progresses, it seems that greed is always one step ahead of the curve.

Inability to use Skype over Wi-Fi is retarded and makes Skype Mobile completely useless.
To be fair, I did try international calls over 3G, and the call quality was crappy (I am being kind). The same call made from PC Skype was fine. Android App Integration with phone is also very confusing - I ended up making few international calls directly via cell network before realizing that you have to have Skype Mobile running in background to make it join the party.
The decision to block Wi-Fi is obviously motivated by greed and nothing else. Well, there are ways around all this, not as convenient as it could have been, but neither Skype nor Verizon will be getting my $$ for International calls.

Like the rest of the people on this post that don't have Verizon I am too troubled by the "only on verizon androids" deal. I hate that; at least make skype app open source so it to be editable and configured for other android phones. I am not happy with this at all! >8(

The app seems to work fine. But as the owner of a new Vz Droid 2, I am irked that I can't remove the damn Skype App! (or apparently stop it from autoloaing as a background service)!!!

Dear Skype,
I was so happy to hear that Skype is coming to US Cell phones, but I was so disappointed to see that Skype in only available with Verizon. Like thousands others I do not like Verizon, because of their expensive calling plans, and CDMA system. They do not support SIM Card System phone.
My question to you is " When are you making Skype available to T-Mobile Network?"
I am big fan of Skype.
I will appreciate your response,
