Skype 2.5 Gold for Windows Mobile, and more in store

Windows MobileOur engineers have been hard at work on Skype for Windows Mobile over the last few months. Just over two months after the release of 2.5 Beta, we’re ready to share the Gold version with you. We’ve fixed a bunch of bugs, and smoothed and refined the user experience on new devices. Head over and download it now – for both Pocket PC and Smartphone devices.

However, I know how keen you are to learn about the latest beta versions from our labs, and so we’re also previewing the first beta of Skype 3.0 for Windows Mobile at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today. It includes two great new features: SMS and file transfer. With 3.0 Beta, you can send text messages from your phone at Skype’s low rates, and send and receive files with your Skype contacts around the world. We’ll be releasing 3.0 Beta in March, so keep your eyes peeled for more news on this blog.

We’ve also been working together with Sony Ericsson and have developed a Skype Panel for the Xperia X1, which tells you at a glance which of your contacts are online. It’ll be available for download in March.

As always, we’re keen to hear your feedback on Skype for Windows Mobile. Leave a comment below, or head over to the Skype Community and join the discussion there.

Peter
I just downloaded Skype for Windows Mobile 2.5 Gold, for Pocket PC and installed it in my HTC Touch. I'm using a WIFI connection, and still have the same problem of the test echo reception and transmisson breaking up, so badly as to be inintelligable. I connect, then hear the ring, then the test voice begins but immediately breaks up. Sometimes I hear more of the transmission than other times, if I try it repeatedly. Any suggestions?

@ramb41 I've asked one of the Windows Mobile team for some advice, and will get back to you as soon as I can.

hi, can i use this application on nokia 5800 its a smartphone...please do replay...... i'm waiting,,, :(

Peter Parkes commented Wednesday, Feb 18

@shru246 unfortunately, there isn't a version of Skype which will run on the Nokia 5800

Peter Parkes commented Wednesday, Feb 18

@ramb41 Unfortunately, I suspect that the processor in your HTC Touch is a bit too slow to handle Skype calls well - our engineers tell me that a 400MHz processor is pretty much the minimum recommended for reliable calls.

Instant messaging should work fine, however - and I'm sorry we haven't really made this recommendation clear. Next time the Windows Mobile bit of the Skype website gets updated, I'll make sure we add a note about processor speeds.

Can any one give me an idea of when there may be a version available for the Nokia 5800. Is this something which is being developed -any info would be great - thanks.

Hi!

In my search for some kind of program for my TyTN II to see how much Skype for WM transfers during a call, I was thinking that a "transferred data counter" would be very useful to incorporate into Skype itself. Since there is a possibility to use it over 3G network, it is in my opinion quite essential to see how much it uses!

Seems that I am now unable to dial out on my HTC Touch Pro (with or without the regular phone turned on). The dial icon is greyed out for any contact I select. I was able to dial in previous versions. To whom may I (re-)direct this query. The processor is apparently 580MHz so I presume this shouldn`t be a problem.

eugene_fiume commented Wednesday, Mar 11

My mistake. It seems my default situation was that I was logged in offline and did not notice. Calls work fine. Apologies for wasting your bandwidth.

Ok, i just installed the new Skype 2.5 for Windows mobile on my HTC touch, you're right, its still bad probably 'coz of the slow processor problem, don't you think you guys should consider releasing a Lite version of Skype which will work on slow processor phones? i mean, obviously people aren't going to buy new phones just to get skype to work.I use skype often on the PC and would really like to see a working version for my slow windows mobile phone as well and i'm pretty sure a lot of people feel the same way.

Hi, i've been following the news around smartphones and skype and I still don't know for certain whether I can have skype-out calls over 3g from HTC Touch Pro 2 - without being charged phone minutes for the call? If I can't then I'm not going to buy this phone because it's so bloody expensive...
