Another way to connect: Skype for your mobile now out in beta
If new technology and the word beta don't send you running into a Norwegian doomsday vault, we've got something for ya. Today, Skype released a beta version of Skype for your mobile, a mobile "thin" client that works on about 50 of the most popular Java-enabled mobile phones from Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. Take a look at the product pages to learn more about what it can do at this early stage -- and to give it a test run.

Hi!
I have tried using preinstalled skype on my N73 with "fast 3G". It's very unreliable and usually can make you pull your hair out from aggravation.
The same has been happening with normal Mac/PC client. More and more people are complaining and stopping using it because of the bad quality of VoIP. I usually have to repeat most of my words to many people abroad and in the country who are on very fast ADSL connections. Unfortunately, am forced to look for a telephone solution to save my nerves. It's a shame to see skype doing progressively worse and worse each year in all areas business and private too...

HI
I tried with a friend the mobile program of skype on our Nokia N95's, logging in is very simple and I see him on the screen Online, but when i select him i only got the CHAT option and the option to view his profile, but what we both don't get is the CALL option, what do we have to do to make that one functional?
Hopefully some one can help me with this.

It's really looks out as a bad joke
To pay a local or national call on my mobile for contacting other Skype user??? Guys, you're crazy! The only reasonable expence might be cost for EDGE/3G traffic used for this call. If this your new project is based on the using of the mobile networks voice services (not mobile internet), it will be absolutely useless.

Doesnt work on SonyEriccson W810i, although is listed as suportted
it instals, but when i start Skype, it tells me it I should allow connection to internet.. or something like that...and my internet on the phone runs quite well... i have google maps and mail, and i allowed connection from the permissions menu..
Hope someone fixes this bug soon..
pappsegull commented Saturday, May 10
Nice if "Skype For your mobile" did work on the same way as on my PC. So I didn't need to pay local calls, to call another Skype member. Just use my 3G connection in my cellphone.
Is that possible? Maby when you take it out of your beta release:)
What about "- Skype to Skype calls will ALWAYS BE FREE"???????
Or you might lose many customers!!
martin41911 commented Sunday, May 11
The Q&As on the Skype website are completely confusing and do not answer the most basic question – i.e. Is it real VoIP on all phones? Well after loading the Java applet, you find it isn't real VoIP! ![]()
For example: I have a 3G phone (Sony Ericsson K800i) running on the UK's "three" network. I eagerly loaded the Skype app, and read its help section in the menu. Strangely, it tells me that Skype will dial a "local" number to make voice calls. But that is precisely what I DON'T want. Rather I want to be able to make VoIP calls directly using my phone's in-built 3G web access (as I have an unlimited data plan with ‘three’). In short, if this application won't allow me to make direct VoIP calls from my phone, and not only that, but it will also get my 'three' phone bill loaded with regular call charges, then it is completely useless to me. I might as well dial through a 'cheap-call provider like Telestunt (0844 861 8888) to get 1p-per-minute calls the USA, for example. And they don't ask you registration questions.
(note: I don't want Skype for word messaging).
Martin.

Skype Video Calls from a mobile:
I own the HTC P3600 which is a great PPC! Is it possible to make a video call from my P3600 with Skype?
My carrier (AT&T) in the US has 3G but their hardware does not recognize the P3600 as a video conferencing phone. Sillyness, they do not have a selection tab on their internal system to activate it. I can use Skype from my P3600 but for voice calls only.
Woody
I would be nice to use a Skype for video conferencing. How?
jeromejscott commented Friday, May 23
A collossal white elephant of an application - cost to download, cost to call, cost for others to call you, cost me a waste of time to find all this out. And no video call! a major reason for using skype in the first place. This app smells like they've slapped their brand name on something that is totally the opposite of what skype is meant to be - VOIP! (and free) This like a big step backwards to a kind of medievel call charging scheme that the fixed telcos use. What next? dark ages operator connections? prehistoric line drops? oh, we're already there.
It seems odd that most new phones are coming out with video call camera I have a Nokia 6500 on Hitchison3 network with the little video call camera and it is totaly useless. So much for this intimate partnership with Skype & 3 This application has no link to 3 whatsoever.
beta? more like: worser 1.0

I live in London, UK and call my friends and relatives in my native country Sri Lanka very often. I have a Nokia N95 8GB phone on Vodafone network, however it does not support Skype.
Recently I came to know that 3 promote Skype on 3 Skypephone and I visited their store. However, I found that buying a Skypephone would not solve my problem as it only enables me to make phone calls those who are online with Skype.
What I am really interested is finding a cheap way to telephone calling cards as I spend good amount of money for same. if you have any other alternative solution how Skype can help me to bring down my calling cards cost, please be good enough to let me know.
Thank You

But, what ARE you doing, staff at Skype? When trying to install this Mobile Beta on my Nokia N95 to finally be able to uninstall Fring, I get totally stuck. I am asked to fill in my mobilenumber. At this point I realize that I'm fooled. This is not a VOIP application at all.
You made me really angry and disappointed. I became a Skype-client in order to make as cheap calls as possible. And since my N95 has Wifi/WLAN there is no use to re-route Skype-to-Skype calls via expensive mobilenumbers. As so many has pointed out: What happend with "Skype to Skype calls will ALWAYS BE FREE"?
While waiting for you to reconsider and reprogramme a VOIP-application the recommandations is to use Fring to log in and use Skype in your wifi-mobile.

This software is absolutely useless. I live in the USA and have a nokia N95. Why am I paying to use my daytime minutes via my router? This is nothing like a mobile handset, and is an insult to my intelligence! Skype is trying to make a buck here by freeing us from the computer, however you have not done that without the expense of airtime. If I wanted to call at night when minutes are unlimited, I would bypass the entire skype process. Fring does not work perfect, it hogs a lot of battery but it puts this BETA TO SHAME!
sesatvoip commented Saturday, Jun 28
In my opinion all it need to do is connect to a WiFi just as my computer does. It does not need to use any cellular time, it doesn't need to use Skype Minutes. What is so hard about that?
sesatvoip commented Saturday, Jun 28
I agree with "azjeremy". Seems like Skype should be working on ways to get new customers rather than ways to exploit customers. Belkin sells a stand alone phone that does what we want. Is it beyond reason to think our wifi cellphones can't do the same?
tirolboy commented Sunday, Jul 6
All I can add to this forum is that Skype on my mobile 3 Skypephone works very well, in fact the quality is far better than Skype from my PC. The only snag is one cannot utilise the Skypeout facility, but Skype to Skype is great. Understandably 3 has to make a buck somewhere! If the quality is not there with SFYM then its a non starter.

Don't trust new features, if skype can't make the old ones work.
Example: It is not possible to re-register a previously used mobile phone number as sender-id. No new verfication code is being sent.
The problem is apparently so well known that "support" doesn't even bother to reply to requests. Wake up folks und do something about this effing SMS-prob. Or people will switch to other service providers.
marcel.egloff commented Monday, Aug 18
This I find very strange:
Many companies (like Skype) have tons of requests about the iPhone in their blogs and the usually very customer friendly team seams to ignore them all!
What's the problem here? Can someone of the team at least tell us why you don't even acknowledge these requests?
Do you understand?!? I am not asking you when or if the iPhone will be supported... I am asking you why you keep so silent! Don't you think this is a valid request?

Thank you for creating this software for our mobiles! There were many alternatievs, which were demanding money so you can use their software. Now - I think it would be very nice if you add "Rename Contact" function. The way my friends are writing their names is freaking me out! On my PC version I have my list changed the way I want to display their names. It would be great if I can do that on my mobile, cause I cannot recognize who I am talking to. Thank you in advance!

I haven't tried testing out this new beta software beceause I'm kind of puzzled at why we have to enter our mobile number in this software. I recall being able to access my hotmail account without even having to enter my mobile number. A question comes to mind when I see this blog... Is Skype for your mobile really free? Seems like a magnet for attracting a lot of hidden costs. I noticed some people mentioning the usage of their mobile service minutes while using Skype for your mobile beta messaging or calling Skype to Skype prior to viewing this blog. How would that still make Skype for your mobile beta free if your calling Skype to Skype and still spending mobile service minutes? The Skype for your mobile beta should work like how PC to PC would work, otherwise I don't think that's VoIP. The website should do a better job at the descriptions so the customer would be better informed. Using Netgear Skype phone for example, now that's a real VoIP phone. Now is just for Skype to integrate that to mobile phones that already has internet subscribed with the mobile phone, instead of having to connect through WiFi access points.

SFYM beta works well on Sony Ericsson W810i and K750i phones. Just gone to latest beta, 0.9.26 I think. Nice clean, simple user interface. Connecting the thin client doesn't rinse too much data over GPRS, I reckon about 6-10k for an average call. Then connects to a landline number which comes out of my contract minutes.
SFYM is a killer app for my knackered, ageing Sony Ericsson phones!
ken_holder commented Friday, Oct 17
I just don't get it! Why would I want to call a local number with my mobile to make a Skype call when I have Wifi on my phone and a wireless LAN in my home & office?
(Actually, I'm in China at the moment, and Skype beta 0.9.26 is trying to force me to call a local number in Sydney, Australia, in order to make a Skype call. This is crazy!)
Skype, what were you thinking????
I'll be deleting your app from my phone because it provides me with zero benefits.
paulpolotnianka commented Sunday, Oct 19
Recently acquired N95 8GB and after reading comments on this forum i am disappointed that the beta is not true voip or rather not offering the same great benefits of pc skype. Accountants running skype? it seems that this is a business decision to generate opportunities for new charges. Sad. Why skype cannot operate on a wi fi enabled mobile phone like it does on a pc has less to do with technology than making money.
i have noticed a similar 'philosophical' shift with another, once great, product driven company - ebay. Same accountants perhaps?

How can I get Skype working on my new phone?
willy.alfaro commented Sunday, Nov 2
Well, after a long waiting Skype mobile for my Nokia n81 I have to admit that I only had it installed for 2 minutes and then deleted. I downloaded it from www.skype.com/m in my phone directly. I could not make a phone-to-computer call among Skype users, don't know why. There are many confusing "rates" to use it. The application should be like the one on my computer, if I call a phone I use my Skype-Out credit, if I call a computer it´s free. I have no idea what is the Skype plan on this mobile app, but it is not what we users need. Next version bring VideoCalls, by now it is useless.

To Ken_Holder - not getting it.
The feature you are trying to use is not for your situation.
If someone is in Europe trying to call the USA (just an example) instead of paying for an international call rate from their mobile carrier which would be very expensive, they can call a local access number and then call overseas and it would only come out of their monthly local minutes. So if they get, let's say, a flat 400 mimutes per month on their subscription, it would come out of that and not be charged as an international call. It was designed for a cell phone with no wifi access around.
It seems, from reading this blog so far, that the real issue is that when Skype is on a cell phone that has wifi capability, the Skype app doesn't always use the wifi access over the regular cell phone access. It appears it's deflecting to the cell minutes instead of the wifi.
I think it's the definition of beta. If on a wifi only phone, like the Belkin or Netgear it will work. If on the PC, no problem. If on a cell phone there's 3 options - 1. the local call minutes to save on international calls that comes with the subscriptions, 2. using the wifi capability of the cell phone and 3. using the data usage part of the cell phone.
I believe that it needs our cell phone number, not to charge us cell minutes and end up using a regular phone charge, but because the data usage is charged via our cell phone number. So if I have a phone from AT&T and pay the $24.99 for 20MB of data per month, AT&T charges me that MB data usage on my contract which is signed up through my cell phone number. I can't verify this but, unless I missed it in reading these comments, I didn't see anyone say they ended up with voice charges in their bill. All I've read, and please correct me if I am wrong, that people were put off wanting to know why they had to enter their cell phone number. Again, I'm only guessing, but I do know that my data does get charged via my cell number. I do agree that with other internet access activities, I need not put in a cell number to go around the net, so it does seem odd to have to for this. I would be very interested to see if someone put in their number and got charged minutes. I'll re-read the comments to double check if someone said their bill did have voice minutes on it.
What I'm am only guessing is happening, is that the beta version is having trouble 1. working at all and 2. flipping between wifi usage and data usage.
So, bottom line - the beta isn't finished yet. Doesn't sound like it was tested enough. We would hope that beta would "almost work" and only convoluted examples would come up. Sounds here like all examples are coming up. Also sounds like perhaps voice units are getting clocked instead of data units. That could be the phone issue or the provider issue or the Skype issue. Little hard to tell. Can't see why an AT&T or any other provider would want to work to resolve this for Skype since I would use my Skype subscription always and never use a cell minute again. Like one person said above, the 3 Skyephone lets you use Skype-to-Skype calls but not Skype Out minutes. Otherwise, the 3 provider (3 is equivalent to AT&T or Vodaphone, etc.) would have no voice revenue at all and would be bankrupt in a day. Somebody has to foot the cost of putting up cell towers, etc.

We have heard NO news on a Skype app for the Android OS.
VoIP startup TruPhone has already stated they are developing an app for Android. I and many Android/Skype users would prefer to stay with Skype, but are prepared to switch VoIP carriers should Skype decide not to support Android.
We don't want to see that happen, and look forward to development of an Android app. Please update with any information on a Skype app for Android.

Why not SKYPE to SKYPE calls on E71? In case windows mobile Smartphone call option is available but for Nokia is missing. What is the reason? It would be more convenient when connecting to WLAN to have SKYPE to SKYPE call option. I would not keep SKYPE on my PC and would use on phone at home and office. I expect some problems will be caused by incoming mobile network calls, but that should be manageable. Anyway priority calls are mobile network calls.
dragrace7 commented Wednesday, Feb 18
Hi, I just had a pretty bad experience today. I have checked with 3 network that I do have free 3000 minutes a month to use on Skype to Skype. I have an account with Skype for outgoing calls as well which I am aware I pay for when I make a call from my previous Nokia 6120 or now from Nokia E71.
But what happened today puts me off using Skype on my mobile. I had an incoming call from another Skype user which I have not been charged from before using Nokia 6120 but today those 33 minutes cost me 4.93 GBP what is way too much!!!! Skype to Skype for free???????? Where have I heard / read that???
I think this is a very unfair way to make money. If I am already paying for the mobile plus the internet charges, what is the reason for Skype to charge me this crazy rate if I am getting a call from another Skype user, not matter if from their mobile or pc/mac Skype version????
I would love to hear some answers to this problem, which I believe is going to be raised more often then only few times.
I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY KIND OF TRUE REPLY TO THIS FROM SKYPE TEAM
THX
peterparkes commented Thursday, Feb 19
@dragrace7 the lite version of Skype charges the standard Skype call rate to receive calls from Skype users – however, £4.93 sounds like too much. If you received this call while overseas, however, you will probably have been charged Three's standard rate to receive calls while roaming – could that have been the case?

In the other hand, it might not be Skype fault. Wouldn't you guys think that it could be all the mobile phone provider mafias in every country don't allow Skype to connect WIFI as it's going to replace mobile charge?
Because it could be the only reason why Skype launched such a stupid useless mobile app.
