Skype 3.8 for Windows goes public with audio improvements, other tweaks

Beta-friendly users have been running Skype 3.8 for Windows since April 2. But with the usual beta imperfections now sanded off, this audio-focused iteration of Skype is ready for public release. If you're a Windows user, head to the download page to get it.

I've lost all audio out....No one can hear me as of today....

I've downloaded the 'new' 3.8 and installed it and it still says I have v.3.6.0.248....

This has just killed my business. I use skype EveryDay to call clients around the world and basically....I'm out of business.

jaygeex commented Tuesday, Apr 29

Update to 3.8 seems to work only from Explorer not Firefox. do not know what happens with other browsers.

Works fine for me on Firefox.
Thanks guys for another iteration.
Keep'em coming.

It promising to me, but when is the Mac edition coming out? That would be more promising :)

This is an awful release. Not only is this buggy, as stated above, the promised fix for Skype in Windows Server 2008 is not in this! It still crashes on start-up.

It's almost as if you have just ONE guy doing all the coding and testing. Pathetic.

andyn3 commented Thursday, May 1

Still crashes on Windows 2008 for me too.

benjamin.orchard commented Thursday, May 1

I'll start using skype regularly again when it supports true video conferencing...does this release fix that?

I mean I like being able to do video chat with one other person, fine, but I've got a group of friends I want to hook up with all at once. Why can't skype accomodate that need? Fix that issue, and I'm back. In the meantime, I've moved to ooVoo, and I'm not really that happy about it since it kills my processor. All I want is light-weight video conferencing between me and five or six of my closest friends. Please.

jdawson4474 commented Thursday, May 1

Indicates an older version when you attempt to upgrade, even a manual update ends up with a version identifying itself as v.3.6.0.248 not 3.8...

mkaylor commented Thursday, May 1

I would also like to have some multi-point video conferencing capabilities instead of just point-to-point. That would be a major feature!!

Hooks in place to call a H.323 video conferencing system would be great to have.

Hooks in place to call SAP systems.

Basically I am a podcaster and this version of Skype thinking it knows best stuffs my audio every time I make or receive a call. I have told it not to alter my audio setting and yet it still does. I have to manually reset every time.

One of the worst releases of Skype yet. The forum post says it all.

We use skype in the office .Most of the time skype shows my contacts offline even them they are online . what would be the problem .We all (about 4 users) have the same problem . we have upgraded from 3.6 to 3.8 version also

michael.avanessian commented Sunday, May 11

Garbage... Update Firefox extension is broken. It breaks displaying jpg images by themselves such as.... http://test.com/image.jpg

Also, audio is garbled on some calls. This never happened with 3.6

Lastly, I lost speaker sound when making a simple phone call.

Reinstalling cleanly doesnt help. It's just the software.

On Monday 26/05, the other party and I both downloaded and use the latest version of Skype (3.8) and the problem didn't improve. Both of us have been using Skype for alomost 2 years and with our current internet speed, we have never experienced a delay as bad as this.

Anyone experiencing this same problem or anyone with any suggestions?

Downloaded 3.8 a couple of days ago 05/31 & no problems to date. I haven't noticed any improvements over the 3.6 version but maybe time will tell on the rate of dropouts, echo, etc. For the record I'm running XP Pro & Internet Explorer 7.

There appears to be a problem with the Firefox extension in Skype v.3.8. I downloaded 3.8 last week and have had problems with Firefox ever since - links not working, hangs etc. I disabled the Firefox extension ... NO PROBLEM!!

lmcjipo commented Tuesday, Jun 10

This isn't really part of Skype v3.8 (at least I don't think so) but what I like is the current ability of Skype to display a real phone number (currently limited to mobile numbers and Skype-In numbers) when making an outgoing call.

What I would like to see is this increased to include regular land line phones. I know that there has to be a way of authenticating the phone number (which is why mobiles are used because of the SMS ability) but with a regular landline phone, you can have something similar to PayPal Mobile where a call is made to the landline phone and an automated PIN is read out by the system. The user can just key in the PIN from within the Skype webpage which authenticates that the phone number actually belongs to the user.

Good news - OK , first of all Skype in the past and in this latest version so far is very good. I do get some people telling me they hear an echo
(sometimes not all the time )when I am called from Skype to a regular telephone. How can I adjust this ???

I use two kinds of mics , one is a table mic which normally works quite well ( hey it's 3 bucks ) the other I use is a Heil Pro Headset , and I usually it fine on all accounts including using the Pro version of Pamela Recorder.

ONE THING I'D LIKE : Can you fabulous people at the technical end please consider including a VU meter in the Skype program. This seems like a no brainer but you forgot it , and any audio professional would tell you that's important ...and not hard to include.

Meanwhile I am quite happy with the product I'd give it a (7.5 out of 10 ) , but keep the improvements coming ...and keep thinking of inventive marketing ideas. Then you'll stay where you are - the best !

Another way to connect: Skype for your mobile now out in beta

If new technology and the word beta don't send you running into a Norwegian doomsday vault, we've got something for ya. Today, Skype released a beta version of Skype for your mobile, a mobile "thin" client that works on about 50 of the most popular Java-enabled mobile phones from Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. Take a look at the product pages to learn more about what it can do at this early stage -- and to give it a test run.

Hi!

I have tried using preinstalled skype on my N73 with "fast 3G". It's very unreliable and usually can make you pull your hair out from aggravation.
The same has been happening with normal Mac/PC client. More and more people are complaining and stopping using it because of the bad quality of VoIP. I usually have to repeat most of my words to many people abroad and in the country who are on very fast ADSL connections. Unfortunately, am forced to look for a telephone solution to save my nerves. It's a shame to see skype doing progressively worse and worse each year in all areas business and private too...

I tried with a friend the mobile program of skype on our Nokia N95's, logging in is very simple and I see him on the screen Online, but when i select him i only got the CHAT option and the option to view his profile, but what we both don't get is the CALL option, what do we have to do to make that one functional?

Hopefully some one can help me with this.

It's really looks out as a bad joke :( To pay a local or national call on my mobile for contacting other Skype user??? Guys, you're crazy! The only reasonable expence might be cost for EDGE/3G traffic used for this call. If this your new project is based on the using of the mobile networks voice services (not mobile internet), it will be absolutely useless.

pappsegull commented Saturday, May 10

Nice if "Skype For your mobile" did work on the same way as on my PC. So I didn't need to pay local calls, to call another Skype member. Just use my 3G connection in my cellphone.

Is that possible? Maby when you take it out of your beta release:)

What about "- Skype to Skype calls will ALWAYS BE FREE"???????
Or you might lose many customers!!

martin41911 commented Sunday, May 11

The Q&As on the Skype website are completely confusing and do not answer the most basic question – i.e. Is it real VoIP on all phones? Well after loading the Java applet, you find it isn't real VoIP! :(

For example: I have a 3G phone (Sony Ericsson K800i) running on the UK's "three" network. I eagerly loaded the Skype app, and read its help section in the menu. Strangely, it tells me that Skype will dial a "local" number to make voice calls. But that is precisely what I DON'T want. Rather I want to be able to make VoIP calls directly using my phone's in-built 3G web access (as I have an unlimited data plan with ‘three’). In short, if this application won't allow me to make direct VoIP calls from my phone, and not only that, but it will also get my 'three' phone bill loaded with regular call charges, then it is completely useless to me. I might as well dial through a 'cheap-call provider like Telestunt (0844 861 8888) to get 1p-per-minute calls the USA, for example. And they don't ask you registration questions.
(note: I don't want Skype for word messaging).
Martin.

Skype Video Calls from a mobile:

I own the HTC P3600 which is a great PPC! Is it possible to make a video call from my P3600 with Skype?

My carrier (AT&T) in the US has 3G but their hardware does not recognize the P3600 as a video conferencing phone. Sillyness, they do not have a selection tab on their internal system to activate it. I can use Skype from my P3600 but for voice calls only.

Woody
I would be nice to use a Skype for video conferencing. How?

jeromejscott commented Friday, May 23

A collossal white elephant of an application - cost to download, cost to call, cost for others to call you, cost me a waste of time to find all this out. And no video call! a major reason for using skype in the first place. This app smells like they've slapped their brand name on something that is totally the opposite of what skype is meant to be - VOIP! (and free) This like a big step backwards to a kind of medievel call charging scheme that the fixed telcos use. What next? dark ages operator connections? prehistoric line drops? oh, we're already there.

It seems odd that most new phones are coming out with video call camera I have a Nokia 6500 on Hitchison3 network with the little video call camera and it is totaly useless. So much for this intimate partnership with Skype & 3 This application has no link to 3 whatsoever.

beta? more like: worser 1.0

But, what ARE you doing, staff at Skype? When trying to install this Mobile Beta on my Nokia N95 to finally be able to uninstall Fring, I get totally stuck. I am asked to fill in my mobilenumber. At this point I realize that I'm fooled. This is not a VOIP application at all.

You made me really angry and disappointed. I became a Skype-client in order to make as cheap calls as possible. And since my N95 has Wifi/WLAN there is no use to re-route Skype-to-Skype calls via expensive mobilenumbers. As so many has pointed out: What happend with "Skype to Skype calls will ALWAYS BE FREE"?

While waiting for you to reconsider and reprogramme a VOIP-application the recommandations is to use Fring to log in and use Skype in your wifi-mobile.

azjeremy commented Monday, Jun 23

This software is absolutely useless. I live in the USA and have a nokia N95. Why am I paying to use my daytime minutes via my router? This is nothing like a mobile handset, and is an insult to my intelligence! Skype is trying to make a buck here by freeing us from the computer, however you have not done that without the expense of airtime. If I wanted to call at night when minutes are unlimited, I would bypass the entire skype process. Fring does not work perfect, it hogs a lot of battery but it puts this BETA TO SHAME!

sesatvoip commented Saturday, Jun 28

In my opinion all it need to do is connect to a WiFi just as my computer does. It does not need to use any cellular time, it doesn't need to use Skype Minutes. What is so hard about that?

sesatvoip commented Saturday, Jun 28

I agree with "azjeremy". Seems like Skype should be working on ways to get new customers rather than ways to exploit customers. Belkin sells a stand alone phone that does what we want. Is it beyond reason to think our wifi cellphones can't do the same?

tirolboy commented Sunday, Jul 6

All I can add to this forum is that Skype on my mobile 3 Skypephone works very well, in fact the quality is far better than Skype from my PC. The only snag is one cannot utilise the Skypeout facility, but Skype to Skype is great. Understandably 3 has to make a buck somewhere! If the quality is not there with SFYM then its a non starter.

Don't trust new features, if skype can't make the old ones work.
Example: It is not possible to re-register a previously used mobile phone number as sender-id. No new verfication code is being sent.
The problem is apparently so well known that "support" doesn't even bother to reply to requests. Wake up folks und do something about this effing SMS-prob. Or people will switch to other service providers.

This I find very strange:

Many companies (like Skype) have tons of requests about the iPhone in their blogs and the usually very customer friendly team seams to ignore them all!

What's the problem here? Can someone of the team at least tell us why you don't even acknowledge these requests?

Do you understand?!? I am not asking you when or if the iPhone will be supported... I am asking you why you keep so silent! Don't you think this is a valid request?

Thank you for creating this software for our mobiles! There were many alternatievs, which were demanding money so you can use their software. Now - I think it would be very nice if you add "Rename Contact" function. The way my friends are writing their names is freaking me out! On my PC version I have my list changed the way I want to display their names. It would be great if I can do that on my mobile, cause I cannot recognize who I am talking to. Thank you in advance!

geraldkhwoo commented Tuesday, Sep 2

I haven't tried testing out this new beta software beceause I'm kind of puzzled at why we have to enter our mobile number in this software. I recall being able to access my hotmail account without even having to enter my mobile number. A question comes to mind when I see this blog... Is Skype for your mobile really free? Seems like a magnet for attracting a lot of hidden costs. I noticed some people mentioning the usage of their mobile service minutes while using Skype for your mobile beta messaging or calling Skype to Skype prior to viewing this blog. How would that still make Skype for your mobile beta free if your calling Skype to Skype and still spending mobile service minutes? The Skype for your mobile beta should work like how PC to PC would work, otherwise I don't think that's VoIP. The website should do a better job at the descriptions so the customer would be better informed. Using Netgear Skype phone for example, now that's a real VoIP phone. Now is just for Skype to integrate that to mobile phones that already has internet subscribed with the mobile phone, instead of having to connect through WiFi access points.

SFYM beta works well on Sony Ericsson W810i and K750i phones. Just gone to latest beta, 0.9.26 I think. Nice clean, simple user interface. Connecting the thin client doesn't rinse too much data over GPRS, I reckon about 6-10k for an average call. Then connects to a landline number which comes out of my contract minutes.

SFYM is a killer app for my knackered, ageing Sony Ericsson phones!

ken_holder commented Friday, Oct 17

I just don't get it! Why would I want to call a local number with my mobile to make a Skype call when I have Wifi on my phone and a wireless LAN in my home & office?

(Actually, I'm in China at the moment, and Skype beta 0.9.26 is trying to force me to call a local number in Sydney, Australia, in order to make a Skype call. This is crazy!)

Skype, what were you thinking????

I'll be deleting your app from my phone because it provides me with zero benefits.

paulpolotnianka commented Sunday, Oct 19

Recently acquired N95 8GB and after reading comments on this forum i am disappointed that the beta is not true voip or rather not offering the same great benefits of pc skype. Accountants running skype? it seems that this is a business decision to generate opportunities for new charges. Sad. Why skype cannot operate on a wi fi enabled mobile phone like it does on a pc has less to do with technology than making money.
i have noticed a similar 'philosophical' shift with another, once great, product driven company - ebay. Same accountants perhaps?

willy.alfaro commented Sunday, Nov 2

Well, after a long waiting Skype mobile for my Nokia n81 I have to admit that I only had it installed for 2 minutes and then deleted. I downloaded it from www.skype.com/m in my phone directly. I could not make a phone-to-computer call among Skype users, don't know why. There are many confusing "rates" to use it. The application should be like the one on my computer, if I call a phone I use my Skype-Out credit, if I call a computer it´s free. I have no idea what is the Skype plan on this mobile app, but it is not what we users need. Next version bring VideoCalls, by now it is useless.

solutionsresults commented Sunday, Nov 30

To Ken_Holder - not getting it.

The feature you are trying to use is not for your situation.

If someone is in Europe trying to call the USA (just an example) instead of paying for an international call rate from their mobile carrier which would be very expensive, they can call a local access number and then call overseas and it would only come out of their monthly local minutes. So if they get, let's say, a flat 400 mimutes per month on their subscription, it would come out of that and not be charged as an international call. It was designed for a cell phone with no wifi access around.

It seems, from reading this blog so far, that the real issue is that when Skype is on a cell phone that has wifi capability, the Skype app doesn't always use the wifi access over the regular cell phone access. It appears it's deflecting to the cell minutes instead of the wifi.

I think it's the definition of beta. If on a wifi only phone, like the Belkin or Netgear it will work. If on the PC, no problem. If on a cell phone there's 3 options - 1. the local call minutes to save on international calls that comes with the subscriptions, 2. using the wifi capability of the cell phone and 3. using the data usage part of the cell phone.

I believe that it needs our cell phone number, not to charge us cell minutes and end up using a regular phone charge, but because the data usage is charged via our cell phone number. So if I have a phone from AT&T and pay the $24.99 for 20MB of data per month, AT&T charges me that MB data usage on my contract which is signed up through my cell phone number. I can't verify this but, unless I missed it in reading these comments, I didn't see anyone say they ended up with voice charges in their bill. All I've read, and please correct me if I am wrong, that people were put off wanting to know why they had to enter their cell phone number. Again, I'm only guessing, but I do know that my data does get charged via my cell number. I do agree that with other internet access activities, I need not put in a cell number to go around the net, so it does seem odd to have to for this. I would be very interested to see if someone put in their number and got charged minutes. I'll re-read the comments to double check if someone said their bill did have voice minutes on it.

What I'm am only guessing is happening, is that the beta version is having trouble 1. working at all and 2. flipping between wifi usage and data usage.

So, bottom line - the beta isn't finished yet. Doesn't sound like it was tested enough. We would hope that beta would "almost work" and only convoluted examples would come up. Sounds here like all examples are coming up. Also sounds like perhaps voice units are getting clocked instead of data units. That could be the phone issue or the provider issue or the Skype issue. Little hard to tell. Can't see why an AT&T or any other provider would want to work to resolve this for Skype since I would use my Skype subscription always and never use a cell minute again. Like one person said above, the 3 Skyephone lets you use Skype-to-Skype calls but not Skype Out minutes. Otherwise, the 3 provider (3 is equivalent to AT&T or Vodaphone, etc.) would have no voice revenue at all and would be bankrupt in a day. Somebody has to foot the cost of putting up cell towers, etc.

mghtyred commented Saturday, Dec 6

We have heard NO news on a Skype app for the Android OS.

VoIP startup TruPhone has already stated they are developing an app for Android. I and many Android/Skype users would prefer to stay with Skype, but are prepared to switch VoIP carriers should Skype decide not to support Android.

We don't want to see that happen, and look forward to development of an Android app. Please update with any information on a Skype app for Android.

Another question may be, when we will be able to use call feature in USA?

It appears you can only use the chat app and not skype out. Are these guys for real? I thought this was supposed to be Voip? Well, I won't be using Skype so, have to find another provider. Anyone used Fring? How is it please?

peterparkes commented Monday, Jan 12

@ pauldub1 if you're in one of the supported countries, you can make Skype calls using your mobile plan/subscription minutes - there's more information on the download page.

Downloaded and installed N95, E61 and E71 versions on my nokia E51. It works for instant messaging but anyone allows voice calls.

please consider a working release for nokia e51

darius.lazauskis commented Thursday, Feb 5

Why not SKYPE to SKYPE calls on E71? In case windows mobile Smartphone call option is available but for Nokia is missing. What is the reason? It would be more convenient when connecting to WLAN to have SKYPE to SKYPE call option. I would not keep SKYPE on my PC and would use on phone at home and office. I expect some problems will be caused by incoming mobile network calls, but that should be manageable. Anyway priority calls are mobile network calls.

dragrace7 commented Wednesday, Feb 18

Hi, I just had a pretty bad experience today. I have checked with 3 network that I do have free 3000 minutes a month to use on Skype to Skype. I have an account with Skype for outgoing calls as well which I am aware I pay for when I make a call from my previous Nokia 6120 or now from Nokia E71.
But what happened today puts me off using Skype on my mobile. I had an incoming call from another Skype user which I have not been charged from before using Nokia 6120 but today those 33 minutes cost me 4.93 GBP what is way too much!!!! Skype to Skype for free???????? Where have I heard / read that???
I think this is a very unfair way to make money. If I am already paying for the mobile plus the internet charges, what is the reason for Skype to charge me this crazy rate if I am getting a call from another Skype user, not matter if from their mobile or pc/mac Skype version????

I would love to hear some answers to this problem, which I believe is going to be raised more often then only few times.

I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY KIND OF TRUE REPLY TO THIS FROM SKYPE TEAM

THX

peterparkes commented Thursday, Feb 19

@dragrace7 the lite version of Skype charges the standard Skype call rate to receive calls from Skype users – however, £4.93 sounds like too much. If you received this call while overseas, however, you will probably have been charged Three's standard rate to receive calls while roaming – could that have been the case?

saunuolius commented Thursday, Feb 26

Hello, are any possibilities to use skype video call for Nokia 6500 Slide? are any skype versions?
thanks

yaron.goldstein commented Monday, Jun 1

I love it! since I installed it on my E71, I'm connected on WiFi at work / home or 3G on the road. It replaces most of my SMS needs, since I can chat with other Skype users instead of sending SMS all the time + you have the chat history which is great!
If the VIOP call where free, it would be perfect!!

wrightbrazil commented Sunday, Sep 13

Hi

I am in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and I want to be able to use SkypeOut from a mobile phone here to call phones in the UK.

Someone who works in Telecoms here told me that the call quality would be terrible and said 'don't bother'. Is that the case?

Which provider has the cheapest plans for lots of minutes a month here?

Thanks

wanwisa_u commented Saturday, Nov 28

From this page http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/skypelite/ , it seems like everything is money. Even to be online Skype from your mobile. That's scary!

In the other hand, it might not be Skype fault. Wouldn't you guys think that it could be all the mobile phone provider mafias in every country don't allow Skype to connect WIFI as it's going to replace mobile charge?

Because it could be the only reason why Skype launched such a stupid useless mobile app.

Interview with Skype CEO Josh Silverman

This week will mark the first month on the job for Skype CEO Josh Silverman. It may not be as round an anniversary as 100 days, but if you want to find out what's brewing in the mind of the man at the top, Almost Thirty Days On the Job looks like a pretty workable milestone. And it didn't even require an international logistics operation to do this interview -- being able to reel in the CEO to benefit the readers of this blog is one of the perks of an open-plan office here in Tallinn. Enjoy.

Villu Arak: What are your initial observations from the Skype office and Tallinn, your home for the next two months? Has anything surprised you, or is it business as usual among the 300 people that work for Skype in Estonia?

Josh Silverman: My first reaction in Tallinn was, "Holy cow, there's two feet of snow at the end of March!" But I was certainly not fazed by this -- it looked picture-perfect and seemed to bring out more smiles on the streets. Besides, I grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where I spent my first 17 years shoveling enough snow to fill the Grand Canyon. So bring it on!

What's quite clear is that I'm surrounded by incredibly bright people who have a ton of great ideas about where we can take this business. Where I can perhaps add value is to help us focus us on the "Vital Few" - the (very) few things we're going to commit to delivering with excellence; as opposed to the "Worthless Many" - the long list of very good ideas which, if we tried to tackle them all, would bring us to our knees. The hard part about prioritization isn't saying "no" to bad ideas, that's easy. It's saying "no" to the good ones in order to deliver on the truly essential and/or breakthrough projects that really drives focus through an organization.

VA: When your arrival at Skype was announced, you wrote that you want to build the greatest products -- and the greatest company -- on Earth. And you pledged to always have the best interests of the Skype community at heart. What do you think are their core interests that you're treating as sacred territory not to be meddled with?

JS: Besides keeping communication within the Skype cloud free, there are two things we need to deliver very well: incredible ease of use and world-class sound and video. Everything else wins us bonus points. Skype is one of the most innovative companies in the world, and I want to make sure that the focus of that innovation is around making our products 1) even easier to use; 2) even more reliable and high quality; and 3) relevant to everyone everywhere for all their communications. Sure, with 309 million users under the belt today, we need to be thoughtful and weigh our choices carefully. But we're still a young company with plenty of ambition. And we'll continue to launch innovative new disruptive products, because that is who we are.

VA: Recently, a procurement agent for a high school in Portugal contacted us through the Skype website, seeking to buy a refrigerator for their laboratory. I didn't know we've expanded into that business, but beyond what you've outlined above, what are Skype's priorities in 2008 and beyond?

JS: Well, since Estonia got a whole winter's worth of snow a few weeks ago, we thought we'd make a quick buck selling it to less fortunate countries. The fridge is just a preservative, it's the snow inside that counts. But seriously, this year we'll make video -- including multiparty video -- more prominent and, er, easier to use. But more generally, I talk about end-to-end ease of use. It goes far beyond making the green call button easier to find. We're looking at every aspect, every stage of the user journey. From when you download the client and make your first call, all the way through the range of products we have, from the desktop to mobile. We're going to focus on where the biggest pain-points are along that journey, in order to make the whole experience seamless and delightfully easy. If we do it right, we'll be relevant to more people more often.

VA: Where does today's announcement of the new calling subscriptions fit in the ease-of-use department?

JS: That's right, we've just announced unlimited long-distance calling to over a third of the world's population. For those who haven't heard about it yet, you can basically make worry-free calls any time of the day and not be tied down by a long term contract - or high cost. You only pay a flat-rate monthly fee and you can make calls to landlines in the country of your choice to up to 34 destination countries worldwide. While these subscriptions are a great value, the main thrust was actually to make it even easier for people - not worrying about keeping the clock ticking while talking with your girlfriend in Prague, or running out of credit and having to recharge the account.

VA: As CEO of Evite eight years ago, you told Fast Company that you questioned the value of focusing on today, as it makes you lose sight of what's important. Do you still think that addressing today's issues is reactive management? Surely you've noticed some warts here and there -- what are the existing things that you'd like to fix?

JS: I think my views have evolved and aren't as black and white any more. One of the key skills of the CEO is to zoom in and zoom out. At 10am, you should be able to have a conversation on where things are going 5-10 years from now, followed by a switch at 11am to a discussion about what's shipping next week. We're playing an important role in helping shape one of the key global industries. So having an eye on the next 5-10 years is really important. At the same time there are some pressing issues we have to address today. Ok, so we've made it possible for more than 100 billion minutes in Skype-to-Skype conversations to happen, and it's a major milestone. We've helped make video calls mainstream, with about a quarter of Skype-to-Skype calls using video. But it's not just about milestones. At the top of my "now" agenda is this: radical ease of use. Skype still confuses some people, so we're digging even deeper to achieve step function change. But let me get through the first hundred days and let's take stock of our progress in the summer.

VA: There are a lot of developers out there that are developing third-party applications that expand Skype's functionality. What can this developer community expect from you?

JS: Philosophically speaking, I do think we need to continue building a robust ecosystem and supporting the developer community as best we can. I'm taking a little time to understand where we are and what the next steps should be. Soon, I'll share more thoughts on this on the Skype Developer Zone blog.

VA: And last but not least -- a recent story in the Financial Times implied that eBay could sell Skype this year. What's your take on this?

JS: Skype is a strong, profitable business with 61% year-on-year revenue growth and 309 million registered users, with 33 million added in Q1 2008. eBay has just made a huge investment in Skype by removing the earn-out. We have new management in place, and with the earnout out of the way, we measure ourselves by our ability to delight our users. That's our focus. That's our test.

sinajahn commented Monday, Apr 21

Looks like the CEO has a real good head on his shoulders... maintain laserlike focus on further innovating your core competencies (sound + video + good UI), and get rid of the pain-points, big and small. Solid!

Suggestion: employ a multidisciplinary team to get a fresh look at current usability ("in the field"), then transfer the insight gained to the Tallinn engineers for efficient user-centered design.

Mr. Silverman

I’ve been an extremely satisfied “paying” customer for several years. When I went to renew my current Skypein and Skype out plan I became a very unsatisfied customer.

I spent 30 minutes searching trying to find how to simply renew what has been working. I finally gave up and chose to not renew my SkypeIn plan because of how you have chosen to make this so difficult with things like “Subscriptions” the “Business Control Panel”, “Pay by the Month”, “Skype Pro”.

It doesn’t need to be any more complicated than Skype-In, Skype-Out or Free Skype-To-Skype.

For help leading Skype in the proper direction, take a thorough read through Seth Godwin’s blog http://www.sethgodin.typepad.com/ His writings might help you and your employees get their heads around the notion that “Less is really more”. At this point, the Skype web site has turned into a disaster to navigate.

Because of this, it cost your company somewhere between 30 and 60 US dollars.

In the words of that famous American philosopher Dr. Phil, how’s that working for you?

Dear "Skype",

I would like to say that using the "My Account" area of the web site is totally... well... un-usable. It's poor desing, gives you a headake just for a simple task like extending your subscription. Links send you to the wrong place, so you have to come back, and for a task that should take 5 minutes, it takes you one hour if you are lucky. Dear CEO, get your act together and put the links and buttons in the right place where they are supposed to be. Make yourself a new account and impersonate a user. Try to do what users have to do to use Skype and you will understand what I am talking about. And how about some easy and clear way to contact your customer service, which is the basic of any company doing business with customers (at least give us an e-mail addres FGS). I'm very upset.

Thank you.

Dear Skype CEO Josh Silverman,

Yes, Skype needs to listening customers!

I really agree with you, and I hope that you improve this.

But, why is so difficult to contact Skype support?

Skype support is the worst support than I already contacted.

It's not easy to contact Skype support through webpage.

Skype support does not have an e-mail.

Skype support does not have a phone number.

Skype support does not have a skype number.

Skype support does not have a chat online.

I live in Salvador (Brazil). I use Skype to contact my friends who have Skype in their computers.

Next september, I will travel outside my country, and I would like to use Skype to make and receive phone calls.

I have some questions about Skype, and I can't found all the answers in the Skype help webpage.

I sent 4 times in 15 days the same message to the skype support in portuguese. I still didn't receive any message from portuguese support.

So I translate this message to english, and sent 3 times to the english support, and again I still didn't receive any message from english support.

It's unbelievable that we need to send questions through this blog and Skype foruns, because the skype support does not work!

Why Skype support only has this way to contact http://support.skype.com/?_a=tickets&_m=submit ?

Why Skype support does not have an e-mail?

Why Skype support does not have a phone number?

Why Skype support does not have a skype number?

Why Skype support does not have a chat online?

Why is so difficult to contact and receive an answer from Skype support?

As a global company, why Skype does not have representative offices in some countries around the world?

I will wait that you can change this!

I have just spent 2.5 hours going in circles on your web site attempting to renew my Skypein Subscription...all to no avail. This really needs to be fixed. If you do not provide a better product ...your customers will go to your competitors....and you will go out of business...which is what you deserve for such poor support.

dasfox commented Thursday, Aug 7

If you're taking people's money then you need to give support.

Without giving live support it makes one wonder about the business ethics going on here, especially since this is suppose to be a free/cheap service, but obviously not free and cheap enough for the company to use their own service to offer live support?

I don't know about the rest of you out there, but that is one hell of a lame business model going on here, 'Free & Cheap For Everyone, But Not Free Enough or Cheap Enough For Us To Give You Support'

Whoever is running this company really needs to reconsider their strategy, because if you can't see the stupidity here, then this company doesn't deserve to exist, because if it's good enough for the world to use, and tell us about it, then it's good enough for you to use, and SWALLOW your own words and use your own service and put some phone lines up for support...

From the Skype Forum on Security Issues

Overheard through the grapevine this morning, was an unconfirmed rumor regarding a CNN contributor's peaked interest in developing a segment that could air during the next Nielsen sweeps period which commences on October 29th that could be entitled something like:

From Skypefest To Pornfest ... Don't Go There Queen O!
Will Porn Spam create the next in a string of endorsements-gone-wrong?

Of course, it's neither my intent, nor interest to cause adversity for Skype. On the contrary, a suitable, robust product that satisfactorily meets users' anti-porn and spam requirements is in the best interest of all concerned. So, let's be quite clear ... there might be nothing at all to this unsubstantiated report. But speculate, if you will, whether Oprah (hypothetically assuming that's Queen O) — morally, ethically, and to protect her brand — would initiate some pre-emptive action. What effective measures might they be, and how might all that impact Skype and, of course, the anti-porn initiatives? What would be the probable fallout? Now, having speculated ... what might be the most productive, timely, and forward-thinking plan of action that would be most beneficial for Skype and, of course, the user community?

Skype has graciously provided this — remarkably, and notably simplex — Forum. So, user community ... what constructive thoughts, ideas, and suggestions might you like to offer to Skype and, of course, eBay? [whether the rumor is false ... or not]

Heck, your suggestion might even get read ... apparently not by Skype senior management (well, maybe they read, but either deign to respond, are significantly distracted, or wish a more cordial invitation), but maybe it would by ... no, she wouldn't ... would she? Well she is a Skype user.

(Note: With so many users, 480 million according to Skype's press release, there may be many who might ... inadvertently ... overlook this Forum. They may, in fact, wish to be informed, by alternate means, of this time-sensitive opportunity to assist Skype by lending their voice. It would be admirable for users to inform and support your fellow users in order that they may realize their wishes.)

(Post Note: When discussing matters of urgency and sensitivity: security, moral, ethical, social responsibility, and brand issues ... please be appropriately understanding, considerate, and respectful of senior management's current restructuring, valuation, IPO, and IP licensing concerns and requirements — and the impact — if requesting a corporate review of principles and priorities.)

Going the (long) distance: Skype's new calling subscriptions

Update: Our calling subscriptions have been updated to include Finland, Israel, Moscow, St Petersburg, Buenos Aires and Córdoba (Argentina) - please refer to the more recent blog post for the latest information.

Most people look forward to Fridays (or their cultural equivalent that promises rest, fun and fresh air). Banishing the ruthless alarm clock until Monday morning which, for a brief moment, appears eons away.

Well, my kind colleagues here at Skype have taken a crack at making the world's Mondays a bit less blue. Enter Skype's brand new flat-rate calling subscriptions that were announced this Monday, i.e. today. According to the announcement, the subscriptions "signal the first time Skype has offered a single, monthly flat rate for international calling to landline numbers in 34 countries."

No catch, no hidden costs. No call setup costs. Just the monthly price and you're done.

To switch from Skype Pro to one of the new subscriptions, just go to http://www.skype.com/go/subscriptions click the 'Sign Up' button for your subscription of choice and you'll be converted from Pro to the new subscription. No need to cancel anything else manually, Skype does it for you.

Now I definitely don't need any landline.
There's one feature though that I miss and that would make this perfect:
The ability to call from a phone (landline or cell) and listen to the messages on my voicemail. How about extending the SkypeToGo menu with that option?

Why do we have to pay for online numbers with a world subscription? It's like line rental from an online VOIP provider.

I've been with Skype for over 3 years and when my credit card expired I paid for a refresh on my subscription with the new card in November 2009. Now in March 2010 I'm told my card has expired and have to buy a new subscription. What I'm not told is that my 4 included online numbers now cost $80 per year each on top of the $42 per quarter for the world subscription and call credit!

Can someone explain why Skype would do this to a loyal customer without any notice? Customer services has been really limited in what they can do and most of the community forum posts on the topic block any comments or right of reply.

Tiny island goes Skype

The Estonian island of Ruhnu hardly registers on most people's radar, unless they're passionate Estophiles. But this little speck of land with just 100 inhabitants leaves many larger communities in the dust when it comes to putting new technology to good use.

Because of its small size, Ruhnu found itself at the forefront of Estonia's transition to digital broadcasting. And now, local-government officials have started using Skype -- webcams and all -- in their internal communication as well as to stay in touch with regular folks.

According to a regional newspaper, Ruhnu's officials are scattered across Estonia and being able to see each other is a nice perk that isn't included with their office phones or mobiles. Remind me to ping these guys when webcam-boastin' and Skype-runnin' Intel-based MIDs reach these shores. Wouldn't that be a nifty upgrade from government-issue PCs!?

Volunteer Lab Rat's Presence picture frame

This contraption is not available at the Skype shop. Or any other outlet for that matter, retail or wholesale. And it's not because of an unorthodox product name: DIY instant messenger online contact signalizer picture frame thingy. (For a better pic, you may want to check out this entry in the Hacked Gadgets Forum).

Most reactions around my pingosphere have represented the "somebody's got too much time on their hands" school of thought. But I think that the author, Danish mechanical-engineering student David Bue Pedersen, could turn his project into a beautiful -- and modestly profitable -- case of art-meets-utility. The concept is there, all that's needed now is a design shop to commercialize it. Personally, I can easily see myself checking my buddies' online status on, say, a sleek 64-field wireless "signalizer" on the wall.

Sounds good: Skype 3.8 for Windows now in beta

Here is where people

One frequently finds,

Lower their voices

And raise their minds.

--- Richard Armour on libraries

Libraries. Even if we don't set foot in one, it's comforting to know they're there: massive silent repositories of thoughts, polemics and conversations that mankind has managed to produce in spite of its lower instincts. Some countries even celebrate the Library Workers' Day on April 15, just a couple of weeks from now.

When it comes to libraries, Skype hasn't sat idle either. That's because today we're announcing the beta version of Skype 3.8 for Windows, which contains an improved and optimized audio library. No need to lower your voice here. Let rip, for speaking your mind never sounded so good on Skype before.

Hiding the "avatar by default" in incoming authorisation requests isn't a good idea IMHO. When i see an image that i don't like, i know i have to be cautious or sometimes i even know i shouldn't take the call or accept the new contact.

By hiding the avatar of the intruder, you disable a quite fast way to have a first impression. A pity!

I think better should be to have this "feature" as an "option", not as a "by default".

And by the way ... the problem of the frozen image on my own image in the webcam is finally solved! Thanks.

I'm very happy to see the new beta version. There had been about two months no new version come. I'm glad you've improved the sound quality. (It was already very good, indeed.) Thank you for your providing so good software.

Hi. I like the new skype beta, sounds are more clear and I don't have so much lag as in the previous version.

However I have found two slite bugs.
I use skype with pdt's skype phone. Sometimes skype crashes and when I try to restart it, it just hangs. I don't know the exact sercomstances under which this happens, but I have a 3 ghz processor and 1 gb of ram using windows xp, so it isn't a lack of resources. Skype once crashed on startup and the other times when I wasn't using it.

The other bug is that I heard echo from the other caller's side when they are getting an incoming call while talking to me. This only happened once.
Thanks. I like this beta even more than the older skypes. It just seems more responsive!
Willem.

Hi. This bug of skype is really getting bad for me.

Almost every time I restart windows, skype crashes and I am unable to restart skype. Even if I end all the processes related to skype I know of, it still doesn't want to run. I have about one in ten chance that skype would run.

I am using pdt's usb phone, but I disabled the software to see if it helps. No luck. I am running an up to date windows xp sp2 with 1 gb ram and a 3.0 ghz processor.

I'm now going to reinstall skype beta. If this doesn't work I'm going back to 3.5 until this gets fixed.

dwillemv commented Monday, Apr 14
