Skype Tricks for the Mischievous

Every now and then we could all use some mischief. I know it’s not Halloween but this is the tips and tricks blog, so why not have a little fun?

Today I’m going to take a look at some of the great features of Skype for Windows desktop. Along the way, I might drop some hints on how they could be used by someone feeling as mischievous as I am.

Lastly and most importantly, I’ll also give you the number one rule to avoid being tricked by your friends and family.

How to rename your contacts to something more memorable

Skype’s contact list uses the names which your friends set in their profiles. You can also give them a name of your own to make them easier to remember. To rename a contact or group:

  1. Open Skype and find the contact or group in your Contacts or Recent lists.
  2. Right click on the contact and select Rename…
  3. Type the new name and press Enter

This is great if, like me, you are in a lot of groups and can never find the right one. It’s also hilarious to rename a friend’s contacts after fictional characters so their next instant message from mom appears to be from Dumbledore.

Mood messages and your profile picture tell a tale on your behalf

Everyone has to step away from their computer once in a while, whether it’s for five minutes or five days. When you do, a Skype mood message or profile picture can tell your friends what you’re up to.

To set a mood message:

  1. Open Skype and select your name, next to your status icon.

Name and status

  1. Find your current mood message on the right, or Enter mood message if you don’t have one set at the moment.
  2. Select it, type your new mood message and press enter.

To change your profile picture:

  1. Open Skype and select your name, next to your status icon.
  2. Select Change picture.
  3. Select Browse to use a picture you have saved on your device, or Take a picture to use your webcam to take a new one.

I’m sure you can think of creative ways to use these tips on a friend’s account without my help. All I’ll say is there are some great makeover apps in the Windows Store.

Make your instant messages look how you want by changing the font

Leo Tolstoy once said “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing their font.” Ok, I made up the last part. He actually said “changing himself”. But if you have a favorite font why not use it for your Skype instant messages?

To change your instant message font:

  1. In Skype, in the menu bar, go to Tools > Options
  2. In the Options window, select IM & SMS, then IM appearance and finally Change font
  3. Select the font settings you want to use then click Ok and Save

Having your messages in your favorite font is great, but having your messages in Webdings? That’s just downright confusing. Surely a friend would never do that to another friend…

How to keep yourself safe from all this mischief

Keeping yourself safe from these tricks is simple: don’t leave Skype signed in while you’re not at your device!

Make sure you sign out before you walk away, or your instant messages could look like this when you get back.
