Skype 4.5 for Android: Video Calls Everywhere
For a second release in a row, Skype for Android is focused on improving the experience for tablets. With version 4.5, we’re bringing two totally new features to our tablet users, as well as other improvements for all Android users.
We’re very proud to share our first tablet breakthrough with you: Skype is the first Android application to offer a picture in picture window that lets you see your video call even when you switch away to other applications. In the spirit of wanting to provide a common Skype experience across as many OSes as possible, our Android team sought out a way to develop an experience similar to Windows 8’s Snap View, but with an Android twist. Now you can multitask while you’re on Skype video calls, as well as audio calls.
Even though this feature is only available on tablets, you’ll still see a message asking for permission to draw on top of other apps when you download Skype 4.5 on your phone. We apologize for the inconvenience.
We’ve also added a way for tablet users to quickly jump from one letter to another in your contact list. Just pinch your contact list to zoom out to an alphabet and tap on the letter (or number / symbol option) to jump to that section. It’s a whole lot faster than scrolling.
In addition, version 4.5 has several bug fixes and quality improvements, including:
- Improved Video Instant Messaging functionality overall, including fixes on latest Samsung phones
- Added compatibility for the Hudl tablet
- Fixed crashes on the Nexus 5
- Drop down filter selections on the people tab are now persistent
You can download the update starting today in the Play Store.
We’re always looking to improve your experience on Skype and pay close attention to your feedback. To get the latest news and tips, follow us on Twitter and Facebook, or join us on the Skype Community.
