Skype & London Mela Celebrate South Asian Culture

Join Skype at the world-famous London Mela on September 1st.

“Mela,” a Sanskrit word meaning “gathering,” has become a major celebration throughout the global South Asian diaspora. And now in its 11th year, the London Mela is Europe’s largest South Asian festival and a much-anticipated annual cultural event for the city.

The festival will have nine event zones “packed with contemporary, classical and new music, outdoor arts, dance, sports, fashion, children’s activities, food from around the world, craft and exhibitors markets, a giant funfair and a spectacular theatrical firework finale.”

Skype will not only be the main sponsor of this year’s event but the Skype Pavilion will have a cricket training net set up for a ‘Skype Speedbowl Challenge’. Visitors can compete to be the fastest bowler as measured by a state-of-the-art speed gun reader. In addition to bragging rights, top bowlers get their name up on the digital read out and the chance to bowl out cricket legend, Nasser Hussain! Visitors can also put their feet up in our comfy lounge area and grab a cup of tea (with a biscuit, of course).

We’ll also be celebrating our new lower calling rates from the UK to India and Pakistan. Everyone loves to talk for free, but sometimes friends and family aren’t available on Skype. With a little Skype Credit you can carry on the conversation for 1p*/min to mobiles and landlines in India and 5.9p**/min to mobiles and landlines in Pakistan.
There’s no entry charge for the London Mela and it’s great fun for the whole family. See you there for a wide array of food, sports, street theatre and music!
