Skype by Royal Appointment

Royal couple Prince William and Kate have publicized an innovative way that Skype is being used to help youngsters who are homeless get back on their feet.

The Duke of Cambridge spoke using a webcam and TV screen to Dylan Howie, 18, and Lyn Buchan, 21, who are turning their lives around in the southern Dutch town of Papendrecht as part of a Glasgow charity’s Way to Work initiative.

Dylan, who is homeless, said of his one-to-one: “I never thought that when I came here, a few months later I would be speaking to The Duke of Cambridge.”

The long established family charity Quarriers runs a wide variety of projects, including the Stopover, which houses up to 14 young single homeless people aged 16-25.

Under its Way to Work initiative, Quarriers sends youngsters to the Netherlands for work experience – and this is where Skype comes in.

Quarriers chief executive Paul Moore said: “It was great the young people currently in the Netherlands got the chance to ‘meet’ the Duke of Cambridge via Skype.”

Charity workers in Glasgow use Skype to hold regular video calls with people on the scheme.

The face-to-face chats reassure them that the work is going well while enabling them to raise any issues they might be facing.

Mr. Moore added: “The young people in Holland were so excited to see the Duke of Cambridge on the computer screen.

“It was a fantastic experience for them, and it was great they didn’t miss out the visit from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge because they were in the Netherlands on the programme at the time.”

And Mr. Moore explained why Skype is so useful to the charity.

“Skype is a wonderful resource Quarriers uses to help the young people on the Way to Work initiative stay in touch with staff and friends back at the project in Glasgow.

“Quarriers is a charity so we look to use communications tools that are cost-effective and convenient – and Skype ticks all the boxes perfectly.

“For the young people it is seen as a cool, free means by which they can stay in touch with each other wherever they are in Scotland or Europe.”
