Skype for iPhone and iPad Hits over 120 Million Downloads and Releases New Versions
According to recent data published Gartner, global sales of “smart devices,” which include smartphones and tablets, will hit 821 million worldwide this year and 1.2 billion in 2013. As the usage of mobile and tablet devices continues to grow, it’s no surprise that Skype for iPhone and Skype for iPad are two of our most popular platforms with over 120 million downloads. The photo sharing feature has taken off, with more than 20 million photos shared in just the first few months of availability. Every month, one in every three iPhone and iPad owners use Skype on their device, and according to a report by Distimo, Skype is one of the top 10 free iPhone apps of all time.
Today, we’re excited to announce the release of our latest update (version 4.2.1) to Skype for iPhone and Skype for iPad. Following a recent release that supported the larger iPhone 5 screen and fixed several bugs, the new version includes some of the most requested features from our users on both iPhone and iPad:
Accounts and Contacts
Are you new to Skype? Don’t fret. Now, you can create a new Skype account right from within the app on your smartphone or tablet.
You can also sign in to Skype using a Microsoft account. Once you’ve logged in, you’ll be able to merge your Windows Live Messenger and Outlook.com accounts with your Skype account. Then, whenever you sign in, all your friends will be in your Skype contact list automatically – so there’s no need to have multiple IDs and passwords – your Microsoft account will bring everyone together into Skype.
Instant Messaging and Emoticons
Skype is great for instant messaging – and now you can now edit the instant messages you’ve sent. Simply tap and hold on an instant message to fix typos or re-word how you said something previously. If you’ve connected your Skype and Microsoft accounts, you can also send Skype instant messages to your Windows Live Messenger contacts.
In addition, your favorite Skype’s emoticons are finally available on iOS! Include an emoticon in your instant messages by selecting it from the emoticons picker while typing. For those using a device with a retina display*, you will see your emoticons animate.
Upgrade to the latest versions of Skype for iPhone and Skype for iPad now by visiting the iTunes App Store. As always, we want to hear your feedback – please let us know your thoughts on Facebook, Twitter and the Skype Support Network.
*iOS devices with Retina display include the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, 4th and 5th generation iPod Touch, and 3rd and 4th generation iPad.
