Business Students Use Skype to Connect with Shark Tank's Barbara Corcoran
Are you a budding business professional? If you are, you would likely love the chance to pick the brain of someone who has successfully navigated the business world – to learn about what sparked their interest and eventually what ignited their career. This is exactly the reason we were so excited to hear about one group of students who were given the opportunity to speak with venture capitalist and New York real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran.
At Jefferson Township High School, 50 business students were able to interact with Corcoran, a current judge on the ABC TV show ‘Shark Tank,’ through Skype a video call. She answered questions and shared anecdotes from both her career and time spent on the show – more specifically, touching upon topics such as learning from your failures, tenacity and how it relates to success, the achievements of past winners of ‘Shark Tank,’ and the story of how she took a $1,000 loan from her boyfriend and turned it into a $6 billion real estate business.

Teachers involved with setting up the chat between Corcoran and the students were thrilled with the results, according to NorthJersey.com. They felt that video conferencing provided their students the opportunity to connect prior knowledge with real life experiences, demonstrating how impactful video calling can be in the classroom. “We are able to vet resources available worldwide at no cost and practically on-demand,” Walker said. “Instead of reading about it, we can ask successful entrepreneurs about their successes live! Such first-hand questioning, conversation and collaboration will always have the greatest impact on student learning, making it fun, authentic and engaging.”
