What would you see if you video called the world this June?
• Video call England … for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
Queen Elizabeth II will be celebrating 60 years on the throne at the beginning of June, and England will be partying in style. There’s a heap of events happening to mark the occasion, particularly in London. So if you know someone in the UK’s capital, you can join in the celebrations via a Skype video call.
Events taking place during the Jubilee Bank Holiday Weekend (June 2-5) include: the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant – in which a flotilla of nearly 1,000 boats will travel from London’s Battersea Bridge to Tower Bridge; a concert at Buckingham Palace; and the lighting of thousands of beacons across the UK.
• Video call Iceland … for the International Viking Market 2012
If you’re heading to Hafnarfjörður, Iceland, this month, make sure you don’t miss its annual International Viking Market – and take your iPad or mobile phone with you, so you can video call your friends back home and share the experience with them.
The event, which takes place from June 14 – 17, is the oldest and largest Viking festival in Iceland, and features demonstrations of Viking cooking and handicrafts, Viking battle re-enactments and story-telling sessions.
• Video call California … for the Lowes Surf Dog Competition
Start your summer with some seasonal animal antics by video calling California on June 16 and taking a peek at the Loews Cornado Bay Beach Resort Surf Dog competition.
Billed as “the nation’s original surfing competition for man’s best friend”, this event sees dozens of dogs taking to the waves in a bid to become the Ultimate Champion. See body boarding bulldogs, surfing Schnauzers and wetsuit-wearing West Highland Terriers at this quirky annual event.
• Video call Italy … for the Jousting of the Saracens
Head to the Italian city of Arezzo on June 23 and you’ll be able to watch an amazing tradition taking place – just make sure to share it with your friends and family via a Skype video call. The Piazza Giorgio Vasari comes alive with knights on horseback, trumpeters and flag-bearers on the third Sunday of June each year, for the first round of city’s Giostra del Saracino (the Jousting of the Saracens) tournament.
This traditional event is believed to date back to a jousting display held in the town during the Middle Ages. Today, jousters compete to win the Golden Lance by hitting a target on a wooden model of a Saracen King.
• Video call Spain … for the Haro Battle of Wine
The Batalla de Vino (Battle of the Wine) is one of the best-known parts of the Haro Wine Festival, which takes place in the town of Haro in Spain’s La Rioja region each year. And if you know someone that’s going to be in that part of Spain on June 29, make sure you get them to video call you, so you can see this unusual event.
After an early morning procession to San Felices Chapel – about 7km outside of Haro -followed by Mass, thousands of people start throwing red wine over each other. It’s well worth watching, especially if you at home know that you won’t be having to do any wine-stained laundry.
