Skype 5.1 for Mac
Today we have released Skype 5.1 for Mac.
Key updates from this release:
participants in group calls can easily identify active speakers
you can select recent called numbers stored in the dial pad.
In addition, we have fixed many issues including the iSight Firewire webcam detection problem. With this version, you can also provide us with your call quality feedback after a call ends. Thanks to all of you who have let us know about your issues.
New Featues:
- Focus on active speakers in group calls
- Dial recently called numbers from dial pad
- Contact groups shown in on the right hand side, allowing more space in the side bar
- Call Quality Feedback
- Several minor bug fixes
We recommend that everyone upgrades to the newly released build. Please let us know what you think about Skype for Mac by discussing on our forums or in case you see some glitch then please report it on our issue tracker.
Full release notes for the newly released build, 5.1.0.914, are:
Known Issues:
| Category | Description | Workaround |
| Sharing | Screen sharing does not start after first use during call | Restart the call |
| Application | Occasional crash when repeatedly signing out when making a video call | None available at this time |
| Call | In Leopard, can not press number keys on keyboard to generate touch tones | Use buttons in dial pad (CMD + 2) |
| Contacts | Editing additional numbers on SkypeOut contacts is broken | None available at this time |
| Chat | Copy/paste of emoticons does not work | None available at this time |
Now we just need some work on the interface. Making the topbar smaller would be an easy start. Shouldn’t need to be much higher than the trafficlights.
i still cant believe this.
when will you lot accept you need to redesign THE WHOLE APPLICATION and not some chat window?
at least give us the split contact list/chat windows option found in Windows, damn it makes me wanna move to PC!
Seems to be very unstable! In fact it seems to be taking down my internet connection for my whole computer forcing a reboot!
Just downloaded. Can’t get in. Justngives a message that skype quit unexpectedly. WTF? Tried multiple times.
The UI since 5.0 consumes too much screen space. I typically voice chat in background and text chat in a small windows (in previous version of Skype). Now I can only voice chat in Skype and text chat in MSN. Otherwise the Skype windos blocks too much of my screen …
good work skypers!!!
How the hell can I contact help I have paid and can not down load… it keeps kicking me out so I would like some help therenseems to be less help nhere all the time I have been with nskype for years and now they treat me like shit no way to get help
Just realized that Skype Call Transfer is now longer available in the Mac version but it is in the Windows version. When will this feature be re-added to Skype for Mac. I want to switch my company to Skype with 15 Skype Unlm US & Canada subscriptions but if this feature isn’t back by the end of May then theres no way I can swing it.
Thanks,
i have installed the latest version and now my voicemail does not work (yes, it is active) and if i decline a call it just gets sent to a busy tone. i have used skype for my business for years and am about done with it; it’s making me look very unprofessional. where can i go for help? nothing gets resolved. i MUST have working voicemail. isn’t this basic? please advise.
Downloaded. At first it worked fine but then a message “skype quit unexpectedly” started to appear. I had to download an older version.

why “Known Issues” doesn’t include performance problem, particularly CPU usage?
Is there a way to disable “Focus on active speakers”? It’s terribly disruptive to our group video calls.
Application always crashes – start not possible on Macbook Pro, 2.53Ghz, Mac OS 10.6.7. Reinstalled several times. Switched back to skype 2.8.0.851.
Version 5.1.0.914 gives problems by refusing https proxy authentication, once a day. Result: Skype blocked, only types on keyboard accepted, no mousepad strokes, need to reboot.A bug? Any suggestion?
Moreover, audio notifications for each incoming message are annoying: it seems impossible to mute them, even by muting all sounds effects in Skype preferences. Suggestions? thanks
And even with the update to 5.1 it the audio preferences still don’t work. It’s possible to change from the built-in mic and speaker to my headset in the pop-down menues, but these preferences aren’t honoured when making a call. All my other audio chat apps, including Skype 2.8 are working properly.
This is a product for which this company is charging money and it’s barely working. Obviously Skype Inc. is planning on becoming a full fledged telco. Sad ending for the wannabe-good-guys who promised to change the landscape of international calls.
>”we have fixed many issues including the iSight Firewire webcam detection problem”
But unfortunately you appear to have entirely broken Mac OS X USB webcam support in the process, as many current threads on the skype forum discuss. It still works fine in the macam preview viewer, but Skype shows nothing but a blank preview in the preferences and refuses to enable video sending during a call, ignoring any clicks on the ‘start video’ button without either a response or an error message.
oh and i forgot to mention- my mood message feed is SERIOUSLY messed up. it repeats itself and doesnt have a number next to it to let me know quickly how many people updated
perhaps unrelated- but after using 5.1 for a week or so finder keeps dying on me, everything lags and then i ended up having to completely re-install my system because finder started to become unresponsive after about a second (literally) after restarting it.
No blog post for the fixes in 5.1.0.922?
You need to include a way to shut off Dynamic View (focus on speakers). I want all participants to be the same size. I do NOT want them to increase and size and move to the top row. Several people on the group call complained that it was like watching a pinball game. It’s distracting.
Longer range PLEASE make TEXT CHAT a breakaway window so you can chat with others who aren’t on the voice/video call without leaving the call window.
Please allow Skype to recognize various input devices such that one can use an HDMI camera from a Blackmagic Intensity Pro or Matrox MXO2 video input device. Also Virtual Camera input devices such as CamTwist. All this has been broken. For various reasons some professionals/business people do NOT want to use webcams.
I have a Macbook with snowleopard and it’s been at least 3 week of Version 5.1.0.914 and why have no improvements been made, the video does not work the skype window is just full of random pixels and I can’t turn it of and the menues are frozen.
how can you sign out and sign in with a different Skype account? I did not find it. Thanks for your help
I still like version 2.8.0.851. As they say in the Mac world. It just works!
