Skype coming to the iPhone on Verizon Wireless + new version adds TV video calling support
For those of you in the US, you will soon be able to use Skype on even more mobile phones. Tomorrow marks the launch of the iPhone on the Verizon Wireless network – the most reliable in the US.
Download Skype to your new iPhone to make great value calls to regular phones, as well as free video calls to other people on Skype.
We’ve also taken a small, but significant step in terms of the technology our iPhone app uses: it now supports H.264. What does this mean in reality? That you can now use it to make video calls to the full range of Skype devices, including TVs from Panasonic and Samsung.
It’s significant because it’s another step towards our goal to bring video to as many devices and platforms as possible. For now, it’ll mean that you can make that video call to your grandmother from wherever you are.
This is great news, being able to call a TV from a PC or a phone. Any news of Skype coming to the PS3?
… “you can now use it to make video calls to the full range of Skype devices”… This is not totally true, since not all devices with official Skype have videocall capabilities… like Skype for Android. I hope this will be mended soon. Thanks Skype for improving everyday.
Question to Skype team:
Is it possible to video-call from a Skype-enabled TV of one brand, say, Sony, to a Skype-enabled TV (or Skype-enabled Blu-Ray with TV) of a different brand, say Panasonic?
@robobat.wojtek.socha yes!
That is nice. BUT… where is the basic functionality of bluetooth headset with Skype?
IPAD/IPAD2 Native application, pretty please!!
I’m looking into buying one of the Samsung TVs, partly because I want to Skype on it! Fine print on this site says that I can only Skype with people who are using a Windows machine on the other end. Does this announcement mean I can also Skype with people on iPhones? What about Apple laptops?
