Skype for iPhone now with video calls
It’s as simple as that: our iPhone app now comes with video. Download it now from the App Store, or read on to find out more.
Skype for iPhone lets you make and receive free Skype video calls on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, and works over both WiFi and 3G connections*. With approximately 25 million† people signed into Skype at any given time, our new iPhone app makes it easy to share moments with your friends, family and colleagues, wherever you are.
With our new app, you can:
- Make video calls to people on their computers as well as other iPhones (details below)
- Make free audio calls to anyone else on Skype
- Make great value calls to landlines and mobiles around the world
The new app is compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation with iOS 4.0 or above. You can also receive video calls on the iPod touch 3rd generation and iPad. Calls can be made between devices using the new Skype for iPhone app and desktops including Skype for Windows 4.2 and above, Skype for Mac 2.8 and above, Skype for Linux and the ASUS videophone.
Skype for iPhone is one of the top five free iPhone apps in 2010 according to Apple, and now it’s just got even better.
* Additional data charges may apply. To get the best quality, we recommend a strong WiFi connection for video calling.
† At peak times, as of November 2010.
Fantastic!
It was about time!
how about Android? can make video calls from iphone to android?
Great! Now how about making a release tomorrow that brings Android up to parity with the iPhone version, and maybe allow us to use cellular data networks for calls too!
And how can I make video calls using the iPad?
Awesome job Skype! Will this be available for the Droids too?
When you support iPad FTW?!?
Is there an app for android that supports videocalling, or is it only for apple?
When will Android phones have the same? We are not minority anymore!!!
iPhone s*cks
Thank you Skype for making this great app. It just works and and does what it is supposed to do. Now in time for New Year and sharing the Skype moment with friends and family.
It has been worth the wait.
Thanks again.
yessssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!
Great – Thank you!
Could we now also have an app for Android that works, PLEASE!
Great! This is really great!
Now support bluetooth headsets, please!
THIS was an excellent piece of news to wake up to. I use Skype daily and this is perfect!
Why not push notifications? You have to mantain app open all time to be reachable. At this moment Tango and whatsapp, both with push, are a better combination to be online ever.
All this is very good trend! And when the video appears on Symbian-phones?
I want Skype video on my Samsung Galaxy S.
Nice, but when will be able to this on my Android device?
Android tablets with webcams do exist … … you know
Awesome! Just unfortunately I don’t have an iphone, but I have a HTC so, looking forward to this feature for Android! Great work Skype!
My iPod Touch owning son is going to love this )
Finally! Thank you for finally bringing this to the iPhone app, Skype! (First!)
This is greatness, I blogged about this http://onlineeducationpro.com/skype-for-iphone-now-with-video-calls/
One word: THANKS!!! Great holiday gift!!!
I was elated to see this update and had to test it out last night. Video quality was great on my iPod touch, but if I were to have any complaint was that I wasn’t able to do anything else in skype while in a video call. Besides that, it’s pretty awesome. Thanks!
Booyaa! I wonder how this will affect (or kill) FaceTime. How the heck did you pull this one off?!? Great work Skype!
I love it! Great work Skype
Thank you very much Skype! You’ve answered us!
When’s it coming to Android?
Peter – great news! But, how ironic that that the video you feature to show this new capability is Flash and cannot be viewed on the iPhone, iPod or iPad – the very devices you’re targeting! Is there a “disconnect” at Skype?!
Thanks, have been waiting for this.
I just want to say how much I appreciate skype no matter what happens. I have one child in Europe and one child in Japan and as far as I am concerned, you are the best thing that could have been created for us. Bless you.
This just made my day. Finally Skype with video on iPhone 4. Can’t wait to try it out.
Hmmm… Doesn’t seem to link in w/ my Bluetooth hands free equipment, which pretty much makes the upgrade unusable.
From a person who travels for a living and loves his wife (and future child)… thank you!

I just made my first Skype iPhone video call and everything worked great. I’m thankful to the engineering team that made this natural and important update to the iPhone app. Very well done!
Wonderful news, and Skype is one of my most used iPad apps. When can we expect an updated UI for the iPad form/factor?
Still no Bluetooth headset support???
WHY for iPhone and not for Symbian (Nokia N8) or Android???
I’m getting tired of all the overhyped iPhone stuff.
Come on make it available for other platforms as well, before iPhone users believe their device is a unique state of the art piece of technology
Any timeline on when this will also be available for Android?
Do you have any plans to bring this to Android?
i have been with skype for manyyy years and all of them satisfactory calling with video skype to skype or land lines i love it. but recently everything has gone wrong, my subscription cheks OK, my speakers, webcam, microfone check OK, but i cannot make any calls. the icons just do not work not even the echo sound tester that i cannot do from my page but through customer service, the call is dropped. what is going on? anybody has the same proble and a way to fix it. this is a BAD time of the year to have skype not working properly
Mr. Parkes:
Thank you, for posting this information. We are dedicated Skype users because our son was deployed in the Middle East for over a year. We are now becoming familiar with our new iPad (32GB), and it is very nice. We are glad to see your new app, and would like to ask you to clear up this, our point of confusion. A) The app “is is compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation with i0S 4.0 or above.”
(B) “You can also receive video calls on the iPod touch 3rd generation and iPad.” It is noted that your blog was posted in the month of December, and you probably knew that the iPad’s iOS version 4 was released earlier that your post, in November. We have iinstalled the Skype version 2.1.2 (220) on the iPad, and our iPad iOS was in November upgraded to v4. it is now at 4.2.1 (8C148). Would you, please, comment upon why you said that the Skype app would only “receive video calls on the … iPad.”? This differing allusion indirectly invites the inference that the Skype app is not fully compatible with the iPad. We are having difficulty with placing calls to another Skype user’s name. And, please add, when may we expect that the fully compatible app would be released? Your consideration of this request is respectfully requested, and your clarifying response will be appreciated.
Thank you for the Christmas/New Year present. Tested it with a friend (his iphone 4 and my home computer) and it worked very well using wi-fi. Haven’t tested the 3G part. Thanks for giving us this feature.
I think Skype is awesome. My husband is deployed and if skype wasn’t available we would not be dealing with the deployments in the same fashion. So what, from time to time it goes down. No big deal. Thanks Skype for all you do!
Nice!
Nice, but…. make it compatible with the Nokia N900′s skype video chat functionality. Just tried that and neither side gets any video
Cool!
But I’m waiting improvements on Android version of the app. You should also take care of your customers that use Android phones.
cool video. video on iphone / subscription bonus certainly making up for downtime. keep up the good work Skype!
Love the update but.
How about that native iPad app that you guys promised us a year ago?
With this news I forgive the blackout the other day! It’s great and it was highly anticipated by me and by many users! Thanks Skype. Happy New Year!
When using Skype between a computer and the iPhone 4 I cannot see the video from the computer on the iPhone. This is the case from both Macs and PC with latest vs of Skype. Any fix? In all cases I have activated video.
