Skype for iPhone now with video calls

Skype for iPhone video callIt’s as simple as that: our iPhone app now comes with video. Download it now from the App Store, or read on to find out more.

Skype for iPhone lets you make and receive free Skype video calls on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, and works over both WiFi and 3G connections*. With approximately 25 million† people signed into Skype at any given time, our new iPhone app makes it easy to share moments with your friends, family and colleagues, wherever you are.

With our new app, you can:

  • Make video calls to people on their computers as well as other iPhones (details below)
  • Make free audio calls to anyone else on Skype
  • Make great value calls to landlines and mobiles around the world

The new app is compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation with iOS 4.0 or above. You can also receive video calls on the iPod touch 3rd generation and iPad. Calls can be made between devices using the new Skype for iPhone app and desktops including Skype for Windows 4.2 and above, Skype for Mac 2.8 and above, Skype for Linux and the ASUS videophone.

Skype for iPhone is one of the top five free iPhone apps in 2010 according to Apple, and now it’s just got even better.

* Additional data charges may apply. To get the best quality, we recommend a strong WiFi connection for video calling.
† At peak times, as of November 2010.

When can we expect video calls with Skype on Android systems (like Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000)?

Uh, hello Skype. Your video example is made in flash — which is not supported and cant be viewed on the iPhone.

    YEAAAAAHH!!!!
    Just tried – works perfect!
Thank you, guys! That what I’ve been waiting since I’ve got iPhone 4

Skype still destroys battery life on any iOS device it’s used on. You still aren’t using notifications! How hard is this?

    Amazing app!

  9. king.inuyasha said 901 days ago

So when are we going to have this capability added to Skype for Android? And what about Skype for Android on Galaxy S phones. Obviously, Samsung can’t be relied on to keep their word about releasing the Froyo upgrade for the USA Galaxy S phones, so somebody at Skype needs to work around whatever issue is causing Skype to not work properly on the Galaxy S phones on Android 2.1.

Also, what about the Skype for Linux client? It hasn’t been updated at all in almost a whole year!

Cool, how far away are video calls for Skype for Android? I’m looking forward to making video calls from my galaxy tab.

While skype’s support grows on mobile platforms, its support is spotty. Some of skype’s solutions are not true voip and cost minutes.

They should be focusing on better support for Linux and Unix and Mac.
There needs to be a true 64 bit version for Linux. 64 bit Linux has been out for years and Skype cannot support 64 bit Linux. They force 64 bit users to install 32 bit libraries and wrappers to make Skype work.

I was using Ekiga with diamond card. Since I built a new computer with a 64 bit processor.

Now I am thinking of switching to Google voice permanently since it has 64 bit versions.

I’m using an iPhone 4. Whether I’m calling or receiving, to Skype on a desktop/laptop (pc or Mac), or another iPhone, on 3G or wifi… no matter the combination… I cannot see the person I’m connected to. They can see me fine, audio is fine, but I can’t see them.

Have also uninstalled the app and re-installed several times. Have also deleted all other VoIP apps and turned off any apps that use the camera.

Amy ideas on what I need to do to get this to work?

Works great on the iphone! However I think I can speak for every ipad user out there when I say that we would love an universal app so that we can use the full potential of the ipad.

Either way this update was better then ever.

Thank you thank you thank you! The new video on iphone works great. I have only tried it with iphone4 to computer but I think it is better or equal than computer to computer. So far i’ve been on wifi while doing this but I’m looking forward to trying it from 3G.

Anyway, keep up the good work skype!

There is a problem with the skype iphone app video call feature. I have an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.2 and is unmodified. There simply is no video call button. It does not exist. I am only able to receive video but not send. For some reason, it is as if the app is treating my phone like a device without a camera such as an iPad. I have tried emailing skype’s customer support but they are very lousy. They just copy and paste information ignoring the fact that is an actual technical issue. I have tried everything such as uninstalling and reinstalling the app. I also tried rebooting the phone. I know one other person having this problem which must mean that there are lots of people that are experiencing this issue. Speak up. I am expecting a fix for this issue soon.

When do you think the same will be available for Nokia smartphones? It would be cool.

  17. rajivinspace said 898 days ago

Please add 3 way video calling feature. I love your app and the software, but would really love if you had the 3 way calling feature to it. Please add this feature.

You should know the difference between the IiPhone (Apple) and the Galaxy Tab (Samsung) – as I’m the owner of the Galaxy, I’m desperate to use Skype on it!

Does the updated Skype software for iPhone address any of the issues with excessive power usage that the earlier versions have?
If the answer is no to the above, then:
Does the updated Skype software support the iPhone notifications method so that app doesn’t always have to be running in the background chewing through the battery at a million miles an hour? (All I really want is for the chats to continue to come through when I’m out and about)
Is there a more graceful way of exiting the app so it doesn’t kill the battery – getting a bit sick and tired of calling up the iPhone task manager and killing it.

    Great…

So when is the Android app coming?

  21. yyysuyasa said 895 days ago

Peter, it is NOT WORKING on my brand new I phone 4, i can see myself, not the other person, and everyone is leaving posts and SKYPO are NOT giving answers…..very frustrating to have such a bit of celebratory Happi New Years communication news, and it doesn’t work……IT business need to communicate back with there users please!

  22. vanewerksip3g said 894 days ago

Whoo-hoo! I’ve been waiting for this. We’ve used Skype on our home computers for years. (Used it extensively when my borther-in-law was in Iraq.) I tried it out with my iPhone 3GS and the Vainworks Stand (it flips the rear-facing camera to a front-facing camera) and it works great!!

  23. mzwizard said 893 days ago

Nice, but when will it come with video for galaxy s? Surely disappointed.

  24. renatocicilia said 893 days ago

would love skype more if they supported video calling on android devices to (only apple devices atm……..). I think i,m going to use the competitor (rival) for my samsung galaxy s. Instead of using skype i,m using some other software for video calling. I will inform al my friends about skype, being racist at google. and tell them not to use skype because its not suportive for android users. Goodbye.

  25. gidimiz said 893 days ago

    What about:
    BBBBBBBBBBBBBLLLLLLLLLLUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTTTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTHHHHHHHHH?????????????????????????????????????????????????????

There are so many other software out there that have Bluetooth feature! its so important especially when im driving and im getting a call!
Why is it so hard if your competition already have this!
speaking of competition, what about push notification? why do I always need to worry and check if my Skype is still working in the background?
Please do something about this, you are legging behind!!

  26. yrogerg77 said 892 days ago

How about video for the iPad? I can only receive video calls, but I can’t send video? Why is that?

  27. skunky.j said 892 days ago

I would love to see this on Android! Got a Galaxy Tab recently, really want to put that front facing camera to good use. Nothing else out there compares to Skype!

  28. rbleib said 890 days ago

Who cares? Without bluetooth support, all of this innovation is useless. Please focus on your users’ priorities and get this right.

In the mean time, we can always use Fring.

  29. santhosh_krish said 885 days ago

    Perfect! Perfect! Perfect!
    Thank you Skype…

Thank you so much for delivering Skype with video for the Iphone. It allows my family to speak to one another coast to coast. My 75 and 78 year old parents are thrilled to be able to see their grandchildren anytime thanks to you. We are a big fan our your company!

  31. brianbatts said 876 days ago

Yeah, I’ll say it too. What about Android? I love that you suckled up to Verizon on Android and left the rest of us out in the cold. Nice touch. Just lovely. (sarcasm implied and intended). Certainly makes me want to spend money using Skype for voice-calls when you don’t want me as a video customer.

  32. bill.richardson.mobile said 866 days ago

I don’t understand why people are so “gimme, gimme, gimme”. Obviously, they aren’t developers, or they would understand that these things take time.

Skype – awesome job with the video chat. It’s amazing on iPhone4, and makes “FaceTime” a big joke.

The only thing left, in my opinion, is to support bluetooth. Once that’s done… this is a killer app for the iphone. Good thing I have an iPhone and not an Android

  33. e.kugelberg said 863 days ago

Please, make the iPhone app stop downloading ALL my old chats. I already know what’s in them, i kind of wrote them myself….

  34. jayvly said 860 days ago

At the risk of sounding like a “gimme, gimme, gimme person I have been using Skype for many many years. probably as long as it has been around and have always supported it. I love the new video calling upgrade on the iphone and think that it makes it a very powerful application, but please, please, please, for the safety of all of us, will you release a bluetooth upgrade!! “Others” have successfully done it and even the jailbroken version has it. It’s imperative that we have bluetooth at this stage.
    Great app!!!

  35. capitalist_k said 846 days ago

I tried the skype by using wifi. But how come they can’t hear anything when I’m talking Tk them. The volume is so low.. Need help.

  36. alex.barcagiu said 829 days ago

Not sure if it’s only me with this issue BUT the video is out of focus when calling from an iPhone 4 …

  37. steven.g.smith said 826 days ago

When will Skype for iPhone start to support bluetooth devices???

  38. era.perera said 807 days ago
