Skype mobile now available on BlackBerry OS 6 phones from Verizon Wireless

Skype mobile on BlackBerryYou can now get Skype mobile on two BlackBerry OS 6 phones from Verizon Wireless – the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9330 and the BlackBerry Bold 9650.

The app lets you make free calls* to friends and family on Skype, great value calls to landlines and mobile phones overseas, and send IMs to people on Skype anywhere in the world. And it’s just got even better.

Here’s how charging works:

Skype-to-Skype calls, to or from your mobile, computer or TV

These calls are completely free*. They don’t count towards your Verizon Wireless minutes allowance.

Calls to another mobile number or landline number in the US

These calls count towards your Verizon Wireless minutes.

Calls to an international mobile number or landline number

These calls are great value – pay for these using Skype Credit or one of our subscriptions. For example, you can make unlimited calls† to landlines in Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey for just $6.99 per month.

All calls run on the largest and most reliable wireless network in the US, which helps to make sure that call quality is top-notch, and lets you use your favorite accessories, including Bluetooth headsets.

To get Skype on your BlackBerry OS 6 phone from Verizon Wireless, visit www.skype.com/m on your phone to download it.

* You’ll need a data plan in order to use Skype mobile on your Verizon Wireless phone.
† A fair use policy applies to unlimited subscriptions.

It would be nice if Skype focused on being ubiquitous rather than partnering with a single carrier in a single country. This forces the rest of us to seek out other 3rd party Skype clients which Skype seems to be shutting down one after another. With few other choices, non-Verizon users will inevitably turn to other networks to do the bulk of their communicating from their mobiles. I know I have. This goes for video calling from mobile as well. Where is Skype? Where is the open ecosystem? Where is the innovation? It seems Skype is more concerned with the window dressing on its fat desktop client than on owning the mobile landscape. Where did the Skype we all know go?

    Big Deal.
I’ll subscribe to Skype when I can get a Skype Blackberry app that does NOT require me to be a verizon customer.

Peter, Why can we not get Skype for UK registered Blackberrys (or is that Blackberries)? Is this an arrangement between Verizon and Skype or can a Vodofone registered BB get skype? Thanks

Beware. There seems to be a major problem using SkypeOut with the Verizon Blackberry Tour. When I call a SkypeOut number already in contacts it works ok. When I dial a number in the Skype window it goes through as a regular Verizon call. I have been trying to explain this to Verizon for months now in order to get some hefty international charges credited back. Verizon has not been willing to even find someone who understands Skype so I can explain this. They may have best coverage but that’s it for me with Verizon. No more renewals, and I have a family plan.

One carrier in one country… And limited to BB OS 6? Not exactly exciting news.

Should it ever be available for BB OS 5 (or higher of course) and country and carrier neutral I’ll definitely start using it. I think that Skype is excluding a huge market (non-US older BBs) with this version

Please stop with limiting yourselves to a specific provider. It doesn’t go well with the heritage of Skype. If you don’t want to release a generic BlackBerry Skype Mobile client, at least give us a BlackBerry version of the old Skype Lite client I used so frequently on my old SonyEricsson phone! I don’t care if I have to dial a Skype To Go number to make calls, or pay with Skype Credits to receive, but I miss the contact list and the messaging of Skype Lite.

Please understand that people don’t choose a provider based on Skype availability, and that I will not switch to Verizon just to get Skype. There are other options that are looking more and more tempting..,

I had skype when I first got my BB Bold on Verizon it worked… and one day it stopped working… I get a message that Skype mobile can only be used on Verizon Wireless in the US…

Well I have device software version 6.0.0.431 and still I get this message… The people at Verizon say They don’t know why maybe you can help me.

I get a message “Skype mobile can only be used on Verizon Wireless in the US.” I fall into both those categories and Skype no longer works on my BB Bold.

I am hoping you can help as the people at the Verizon Store have got no idea why it no longer works.

Really disappointed Skype isn’t available on the BlackBerry Torch in the UK. Would not have purchased this handset if I’d known this was the case – one would assume that all major applications would be available given RIM BlackBerry is one of the world’s leading smartphone manufacturers. Now I’m reverting back to using my Nokia E71 for Skype…
