Skype for Symbian now supports the new Symbian phones and includes improved call quality

skype_symbian.jpgWe’ve just released an update to our Symbian app which adds support for the new Symbian phones, including the Nokia N8, C7 and E5.

It includes SILK, our high quality audio codec, which should help make sure your calls are crystal clear, even when you’re on a low-bandwidth connection.

Skype lets you:

The update also contains a number of interface improvements, making it easier to add contacts, navigate, add a photo to your profile and set your mood message. Additionally, we’ve updated the interface to better fit larger screens.

To download, visit skype.com/m from your mobile. See a full list of compatible phones.

* It’s free to use Skype in a WiFi zone. If you use Skype with a mobile data connection, operator charges may apply, so we recommend an unlimited data plan.

Is N70 have support of Skype?

  2. tly8168 said 924 days ago

Great, it finally came out! The s60v5 edition was very problematic for n8, and I was so close to giving up on skype and buying fringout credits instead.

    lovely!!!! gonna download it immediately!

  5. tannoz said 923 days ago

Maybe you should put the new version on the Ovi Store…

  6. flybye66 said 923 days ago

Great, but when can we expect video- call support? (N8.)

  7. saqo30 said 923 days ago

Will there be a video call to your phone?

  8. thestudios said 923 days ago

Thankyou Skype! But yeah, I agree with ‘flybye66′. (video). Although I’m not too fussed as I have an Ipod Touch and ‘Facetime’ is excellent. However, if you want to compete with that, I’d be doing the video (if you’re not working on that already:). With regards to Skype VOICE on the Noklia N8, I did a Skype Test Call, but was NOT able to see any option for SPEAKERPHONE on the N8. If you’re not aware of it, Please correct that asap.

Hey guys, it’s great that you follow the development of Symbian, but it would also be great if you could make Skype for my Samsung i8910 – I’m really screaming for it. Thank you.

Nice on my N8, great for text and chat but always got error trying to make a call

  15. mspierings said 922 days ago

Does this version support the front camera of the N8 for video calling?

  16. mspierings said 922 days ago

Does this Symbian^3 version suppport the use of the front camera of the N8 to be able to video calling?

  17. papadeltasierra said 921 days ago

Ditto video please. If fring was able to get video calling on Symbian, why can’t you? I’mnot going to mess around with Skype when I have free calls on my calling plan but video, now that would make me use it.

I’m not able to use Skype on my Nokia C6-00. So how long i have to wait?

  20. davepower00 said 915 days ago

Like most other users I’d like an update on front camera video calling for Nokia N8. This must be a priority for skype by now. Please please please get this sorted.

Its Working in my C6, if you are not able to download directly from mobile, download directly from site and transfer it to mobile and install. I did same.

  22. premjirk said 907 days ago

My C6-00 connects to skype fine using the Wifi connection. Reboots the phone on login when using on GPRS network.

    Hi Mark,

I had bought Nokia N8, it has a front video camera for Video Conference. I had installed Skype for Symbian software. I was not able to make a Video Call from Skype. The only possibile thing i can do is to make a skype call to my friend. During the phone call inside the phone sound and vibrations was coming as if a hard disk platter was moving. I am disappointed with Nokia’s capabilities with the third pary software. Hope nokia improves the compatibility and provide best software with it’s devices. I had spend too much on this device unknowingly.

Just got a thought of selling this Nokia N8 and buying an Iphone 4.

    Thanks,

    Subhashish Ghosh

From what I have seen here, it is apparent that video calling on Symbian OS phones is something that is needed quickly, and not just for one model.

This is an opportunity for Skype to prove it hears its customers.

I had purchased a Nokia E71 about three weeks ago, with the major intent on using it to video call. Now that Fring is out of the question, Skype needs to step up.

  25. btencd said 899 days ago

Well skype you kicked out fring and now fring doesn’t support skype video call….
For what ? just to provide users with voice calling, then what is the point of having skype?

I thought you guys had your own mobile video call applications, else why would you abandon the already existing advance technology, I hope you didn’t plan to sent users to STONE AGE……… Guess a bad business strategy don’t disappoint users just because you can…… duh……..!!!

Yes, now googling for alternate video calling service providers……..

  26. andrew.hamer1 said 898 days ago

ok. Got the N8 today. Check. Got skype. Check. Got video calling… no. If I’d got the new iphone however i would have got skype with video calling. You could video using skype no fring but you stopped that skype people! What are you playing at..?

  27. manozr1 said 897 days ago

i think skype should be easily available for phones having front and rear camera. i am using old phone nokia 3120 classic over 3G. cant make a free calls. rather it asks for my phone number to make the local charges. what is that???

  28. yavorkardalev said 896 days ago

Doesn’t work on Nokia C6-00. The phone restarts after log in. Please fix it.

  29. rofe1001 said 886 days ago

can somebody please help me???i’ve downloaded this skype for my N8 but when signing in, it stuck not even half of the loading bar. The connection that i use is WLAN at my home. Works fine for my previous S60 device but kinda problem for my N8. Such an epic load for my N8. Anybody got the same prob?? And how’s the solution?

  30. s.brahmawar said 877 days ago

I need the speakerphone on the n8 as well. Fring had it, why did you guys kick them out ? Is there an existing solution or do we start looking for alternatives ?

  31. vikrambisht86 said 860 days ago

Has anyone used it on E5. Does skype runs smoothly on E5 on wifi as compared to E63?

  32. cheetoman said 849 days ago

This isn’t true, even though it says that sony ericsson vivaz is supported, every time I have downloaded and tried to install, it always fails and give me a certificate not valid error.

There are no instructions anywhere on how to get around this problem and there is no support from Skype.

Total waste of time, there are many other apps available for mobile phones, skype should get with the program asap!

    No Support! –

  33. peterparkes said 845 days ago

Sorry to hear that – our support team should be able to help you out.

  34. lukino.it said 810 days ago

Give us Fring back! It worked much better, had video, never crash and use A LOT less battery! I simply cannot use skype because it sucks my battery dry in less than a day, while it lasted three with fring.

  35. klisie3 said 601 days ago

I’ve just bought Nokia C6 and upload the latest version of Skype, but still not have the video call options. I wonder If that will be adressed or just neglected? Shoud I look for other programs for video calls over WiFi?
