Skype now available on HTC Wildfire and more

Skype for Android has been updated to work on the Samsung Galaxy S too.

We’ve just released an update to our Android app, which includes a number of bug fixes and performance enhancements, which are detailed over on the Garage blog.

We’ve also added support for devices with smaller screens, such as the HTC Wildfire. We haven’t carried out our full suite of tests on these phones, so we can’t guarantee full functionality or compatibility, but you should now be able to install and run the app on devices with 320×240 and 240×400 pixel screens.

Don’t forget that you can use the app to call regular landline and mobile phones as well as other people on Skype – all you need is some Skype Credit or one of our great value subscriptions. With our unlimited subscriptions you can make unlimited calls to your friends and family around the world for as little as $1.09/€0.89/69p per month*.

* A fair usage policy applies. $1.25/€1.02/79p per month including VAT where applicable.

Are you finally supporting the Galaxy S models? I pay for two subscriptions and my patience is running out …

  2. brian_dailey said 922 days ago

It appears that the upgrade has not yet fixed the issues with the Samsung Galaxy S line of phones. Is there an ETA on when the sign-in issues will be addressed for these models?

The one problem that make me mad is that everytime I want to make a call from the app on my android is it makes me use my phone service on my cell to make calls. How much of a problem would it be for the phone and internet company have if all you need is a smart phone with a data package and minus the phone service and use skpe as your phone app. Now the phone and the TV have been turned into APP’s. O no all I have to do is pay for Data package for your smart phone or just make it a Pocket Computer with mic and speaker.
I would mind paying for just the Data package for my Cell phone and then paying for a app phone. Now I don’t have to worry about a cell phone bill again. Now I just pay $40 a month for my data package.

Hi. I have Skype on my HTC Wildfire and it works perfectly, from Skype to Skype and Skype to Landline but I can’t seem to send an SMS using my Skype account? Am I missing something?

Thank you Skype team! You finally made me happy releasing Skype for HTC Wildfire. Downloaded today and tested on WiFi. Great! But one thing is that people on PC can hear me very well at the same time I can hear them with some delay and voice distortions sometimes. One question how do I run updates for it, because couldn’t find on my Wildfire Skype “Check for updates” button? Thank you anyway and hope you gonna improve it in future. Alex

I just downloaded it on my HTC Wildfire and I’m not satisfied with quality of voice. it has delay most of the time. I would evaluate it with 2 from 5 (excellent).

when r Skype making it avaiable for HTC touch2 which is a mobile windows 6.5 based phone? I have supported Skype ever since you guys were on the market-why is then my HTC touch2 not have Skype application that is compatible with it? It was available for ny o2 exec and I had successfully installed and used it with my Wi Fi to talk to family in India? If a windows platform Skype was available then, whats the hold up for the newer smart phones???

I have installed now on my htc wildfire and is impossible to talk.

The audio stutters with some “tac”…

in the first moment i have tryed to delete some voip applications and create more free space on the memory thelephone, after i have changed from wifii to hsdpa, but the result is the same.

How can try to resolve this?
    Thanksyou.

I tested skype for Wildfire but the voice is very choppy ((

  19. yuldashev.renat said 869 days ago

Actually, it does not work on HTC Wildfire. Voice performance is terrible. In fact, it’s impossible to use skype(calls) on this device. But it’s the main feature of skype!

  20. carrau82 said 850 days ago

Please someone know if it will be new release of skype that resolve this problem about voice performance on HTC Wildifire?? i need good skype!!! pleaseee

  21. anglista said 848 days ago

This post, unfortunately, is a lie. The quality of sound on HTC Wildfire is crappy and Skype on the device is useless therefore. It doesn’t matter whether you are on WiFi or 3G, talking on Skype is impossible on this device.

  22. teigs111 said 848 days ago

I am athe same as all above! Skype on my HTC wildfire doesnt work!!!! i sound like a robot and no one can understand me?? can anyone help??

I have the same problems. Please inform me of a new version of skype with less choppy voice for my wildfire.

  24. m.jamal.abid said 836 days ago

I have got HTC Wildfire yesterday and tried to install Skype before & after upgrading it from eclair to froyo, it did not materialize in either case. The app is not available in android market as well as the link text to me by Skype itself could not resolve my problem. I need Skype to be in touch with my family in Pakistan and i need it urgently. Please help !!!

  25. serj2team said 825 days ago

Yeah, someone has made a big mistake.. First of all on market it doesn’t available for wildfire owners, second – yes, we can install it manually. but only thing that we will get in this case – chat, because voice calls quality is terrible. Besides, chat is useless too, in chat-message window all messages printing with avatars, for the for God’s sake, it is not a laptop, it’s mobile device and avatars makes chat-messaging just unreadeable, it already has small screen, and with avatars it’s smaller.

  26. tmark20002 said 824 days ago

Same problem – choppy unusable voice quality on my Wildfire.

  27. saso_martinovski said 818 days ago

Hello, I have HTC wildfire and I’ve installed skype on it, but the skype doesn’t work very well. The voice is distorted and there is a huge delay, no matter if I am using wifi or 3G. In other words it is useless. It is not network problem because I am using skype on my NOKIA N79 and it is working very well.
Do you have any solution for this?!
    Thanks in advance!

  28. briannalrego said 816 days ago

I have the same problem as those above. I bought the HTC wildfire with the understanding that I could use skype. It has been terrible! Voice quality is horrible and sounds choppy and it’s impossible to understand or be understood. I’m back to my laptop which completely defeats the purpose and makes me wish I hadn’t bought the phone. Please fix this soon.

  29. avistalondon said 815 days ago

I too am having problems with skype on the wildfire. It is very choppy. I suspect there may be interference. Should I switch off some applications e.g. email or weather? It was a main reason for purchasing the phone. Could it be the telephone operating service responsible – does it work better with some operators than others? I am using Tesco Mobile in the UK.

Window is WAY too big – unuseable – will revert to previous version. Needs a compact option.

  31. peterras123 said 791 days ago

I have the same problem with my Wildfire. The app itself works great, but all my conversations sound very choppy, both to skype and land/mobile lines. I would really appreciate it if you guys could get this fixed. Skype is one of the main reasons i bought the phone in the first place. Thanks in advance.

  32. dylanfitzgerald said 788 days ago

Chiming in on audio quality problems. On the same wireless network, a laptop will provide excellent voice quality (and while I’ve not tested it have seen others use the same link for video). My HTC Wildfire sounds like talking through a very slow airplane propeller. Totally unusable.

In retrospect, I realize this is more likely because the Wildfire is underpowered than anything in particular Skype did, but having functional Skype voice service wasn’t just a major reason I purchased this phone — it was the _only_ one.

Any official word on potential optimizations for lower-speed (512MHz) phones? Are there other cheap Android phones that have working Skype to serve as examples? I’d love to see this working (and imagine I wouldn’t be the only one dumping cash into my Skype prepay account).

  33. pocoloquace said 777 days ago

Samsung Corby with Android: smaller screen, cheaper touchscreen, less than half price compared to HTC wildfire and… Skype works perfectly! Why? 600MHz processor… I read this story about Skype for andorid not working well for less-than-600MHz phones:when are we going to have it fixed? I’d be happy to stick to the old Beta Versionbut I cannot call skype-to-skype, just receive.
Anyone working on that in Skype?
I can’t see many answers for officials in this blog…

+ 1, Main raison for buying the phone and disappointed by the chat interface and the un usable phone calls

Unfortunately its not working on my HTC Wildfire either. I also have to agree with previous posts that it is likely an app performance issue. Very disappointed…

In my quest to find a way to call another person for free off my phone like Skype usually is I’ve tried all the apps I could get for the Wildfire.

Here’s how they break down for anyone else stuck with a Wildfire and can’t use Skype without choppy audio problems can finally have free calls over data connections and wifi:

1)SIP is not free, so forge any of those apps.

    2) Fring – seemed good even though I had to download the .apk manually on my PC and save to SD card then install with an app installer. But after a while it would close itself at random times or the call would be lost. I uninstalled as it always ran in background.

    3) Skype Lite – I managed to get an old version of Skype Lite and again used the .apk and app installer to install it on my Wildfire. Skype Lite lets you call your contacts but calls a local number to do this. Thus using your minutes in your price plan and doesn’t call over your data connection. I uninstalled.

    4) Tango – Available on the android market on Wildfire, wouldn’t let me call my friends so never got the test call quality. I uninstalled.

    5) Nimbuzz – AWESOME!! Available throught he Android Market on Wildfire and does more than skype.
You sign in with Nimbuzz but can also sign in with multiple IM accounts such as windows Live messenger, Facebook, Yahoo, Google Talk. ect.
I signed in with my hotmail account and could have great calls to my friend with the same app on iPhone. No lag, doesn’t run when you don’t want it to, great call quality, easy to use and the test chat “jimmy” is pretty funny too.
Definatley a must have for anyone with a Wildfire.

In conclusion, until Skype are able to tweak the code so it works clearly with the Wildfire, I’m using Nimbuzz as it does everything I need it to, plus more, all for free. It’s just a shame I can’t use Skype as most of my mates have Skype accounts. I’ll leave skype installed so it’s notifies me of the updates but there’s no point using until then

I have 2 HTC wildfire mobiles and they both have skype running. Current android version installed is 2.2.1 and skype version is 1.0.0.831. I have a wifi broadband connection to make and as I called to echo test service and the voice output is choppy and laggy. It also gives the same result when calling over skypeout, which means I will no longer spend money on Skype credit or subs to use it on my Wildfire until a solution is found.

At the moment, I have used and still using Nimbuzz and friendcaller which gives very good results for the HTC Wildfire.
