Improvements to our iPhone app

We’ve updated our iPhone app – you can now make video calls.

Skype for iPhone with calling over 3GWe’ve made some improvements to our iPhone app, and the new version is available for download from the App Store.

What’s new:

  • New settings option – Go Offline. You can now choose the behavior of the application when it runs in the background. Instead of always running, you can choose an amount of time that the App stays online for, before going ‘offline’. Also, you can choose to ‘never’ stay online – which means that when you switch to another app, Skype will go offline. This is similar to how the app behaves when running on versions of iOS which don’t support multitasking. This may help extend battery life.
  • Skype settings have a new look, and the options have more precise descriptions.
  • We’ve improved event notifications. All types of event notifications appear in a friendlier format.

We’ve also fixed a number of bugs to improve the overall experience.

Download it now from the App Store.

While it is nice to see such things as settings getting a refresh, when will the big thing on everyones mind (video chat) come about? I’ve seen Fring, Tango, and Yahoo! pull this off, so I am left puzzled as to why Skype seems to be so far to the curb on this feature. Is there any ETA as to when we can expect this feature? The wait is one thing, but being left in the dark is another.

when are you guys going to release video chatting for iphone?

  3. maljohann said 948 days ago

Peter, thanks for the update. Some nice features in there.

Any idea when we’ll have the Skype emoticons in there?
How about Skype video calling (one- and / or two way)?

Still no video and still no push notifications. How far behind is Skype willing to be? You’re getting beat to the punch by Yahoo at this point. Why am I a paying subscriber to your service for an inferior mobile experience?

Bluetooth support is the other thing I’m looking for at some point. I use Bluetooth quite a bit so I can chat and wander, it’d be great if I could do so in Skype as well.

Cheers for the update! Keep it up!

    Please! Please! I pray you!
Please support iPad full resolution chat, etc.

I’m in agreement with dj22091. Whereas we all appreciate an updated ipa the continuing lack of video is disappointing. The Skype iPhone development team seem to be slacking.. I’m tempted to switch to Yahoo Messenger, who released a video capable IM solution earlier this week.

Yahoo messenger is the messenger of iphone really… I can’t still send pics and skype isn’t really about chatting only is about videochat and yahoo do it great even in wifi. Skype can see that I spend a lot of money but since a few months I refuse to spend more money and if everything go ok with yahoo messenger I will tell everyone to move to yahoo since by me they moved to skype from wlm.

Please add bluetooth support, its illegal and unsafe to use cellphone while driving, it’ll be great if i can just push the button on my bluetooth in the car and talk without even touching my phone. So bluetooth support is the only thing missing from Skype iPhone now. Thanks and keep up the good work!

Really Skype must urgently put video calls for iPhone. We have FaceTime,Fring and now Tango. what are Skype dev. waiting?
And also native HD Skype for iPad……please!!

No video chat support yet ? Highly disappointing, to say the least.

  13. wolfensolo said 943 days ago

OK. Serious here guys. When are you going to get (put) video chat to skype mobile for the iPod/iPhone/iPad? Granted I have it for the Mac and all is great but why have a mobile version at all if it can’t do what the basic functions are what we want? I mean really, why have mobile at all if all it can do is just voice? We wanted a voice with video like we have for our computers. You are clearly lacking in judgment if you think we will just be happy with what you have now. Apple has is face time and if I can use that to vid chat with my father on his computer I will uninstall Skype in a heart beat. So get on it people. Get the video chat up and running and be the reason why we support you.

No video chat. Don’t care. Skype needs to play catchup now, since they’ve fallen far behind.

  15. seanhsmith.com said 943 days ago

I agree with others… video chat needs to be a part of the next update to the app.

  16. chjaber said 942 days ago

come on Skype must release a version allowing video chat ASAP. It’s unacceptable that a solution which was once the lead in communication over the net is so far behind!!

  18. cyclone321 said 936 days ago

Can you guys please give us an info on if you are working on a video calling component for iphone ? this is really a must and I hope skype see the need of the community in this.

  19. michael.tissington said 931 days ago

How about the basics – like using bluetooth ???

  20. supermansaga said 909 days ago

Now that people mention how Fring and Tango supports video chat on iPhone4, it makes no sense for Skype not to update its functions as well.

  21. mwphoto said 898 days ago

Yep, I was amazed the other day taking a call on my iPhone 4 (which I just got). I assumed that video chat would be supported so was very disappointed not to find it in the app. Guess it’s over to facetime and bye bye Skype! C’mon guys, this is a fast moving market, you should have had this ready for the launch of iPhone 4!
