Skype now available for Android phones
Skype for Android has been updated to work on the Samsung Galaxy S too.
You’ve been asking us for it – and now it’s here. Skype is now available on a wide range of Android phones, so you can save money and stay in touch when you’re out and about. Visit skype.com/m on your phone to download, or read on to find out what’s inside.
With the new app, you can make free Skype-to-Skype calls, and send and receive IMs for free, one-to-one or with a group. You can also call phones at Skype’s great rates – over WiFi or 3G.
To make calls to phones abroad, simply dial the number in Skype and pay with Skype Credit – or make unlimited calls with a subscription. When you’re abroad, we recommend that you connect to a WiFi zone for best value.
If you already use Skype on a computer, you'll see your full contact list when you sign in to Skype on your Android phone. If not, you can set up an account and be ready to go in minutes.
Product Manager Mark Douglas explains how the app works.
You can download Skype from the Android Market, or from skype.com/m on your phone. You’ll need Android OS 2.1 or later – check Settings > About if you’re not sure what version your phone is running.
Skype is not available in the Android Market in China or Japan.
Skype has been tested on HTC and Motorola devices with Android OS 2.1 and above. It may work on other Android phones, but we can’t guarantee full functionality or compatibility. We’re aware of some problems with the Samsung Galaxy S, and we’re looking to address these in the future.
It’s free to use Skype in a WiFi zone. If you use Skype with a mobile data connection, operator charges may apply, so we recommend an unlimited data plan.
In the US, you can make calls only over WiFi.
A fair use policy applies to unlimited subscriptions.
Not working on my Samsung Epic!! Very disappointing as have been a Skype customer for a long, long time. Keep getting message Sorry, but we couldn’t sign you in. Please fix this ASAP and let me know when fixed!!!
Hey, I’m in a fluster
I have an Samsung galaxy Touch, Will skype ever be available for my phone?
It’s just pretty annoying how I get a new phone and it’s not supported by skype seeing as my boyfriend lives in another country and I’d love to be able to call him through skype 3G when I need to. If I can get a reply to this that would be great! In advance, thanks!

Yep, having the same problems on the Epic; doesn’t work.
Does not work with either galaxy s or Dell Streak both 2.1
Great first effort. Good to have skype on my phone now. Just a pity it has filled my memory with its 11MB frame! Lets hope the next version allows Android 2.2 users to move the app to the SD card so we can use the phone for other purposes also ;o)
Also a more accessible Exit option on the menu would be a welcomed tweek, rather than having to navigate to the ‘Sign out’ option through ‘Change Status’ on the ‘My Info’ tab. What if I just want to quit the app so that next time I launch it it signs in directly with saved credentials? Lets face it not too many android users can leave these apps running 24/7 as the data usage and battery drain is a killer.
Motorola Milestone (A853) running Android 2.1 upd 1 from Brazil, was not able even to download the app from skype.com/m reporting device not supported.
Perfect sound quality on my Nexus One (Froyo 2.2.1) over WiFi, both Skype2Skype and Skype2Phone. Thank you so much for releasing this: I especially appreciate the integration into the main Android contacts.
Great app guys, please please please fix the move to sd card feature asap. Cheers.
Nice that you release an update
“Improvements to our iPhone app”
for the IPhone but not mention to maintenance the Android-App.
Real Fail…very sad!
Extremely fustrating that it doesn’t work properly on the Galaxy S. Seems to be the problem highlighted earlier in this thread with Skyepkit as it will suddenly work but on 1 time out of 100.
Could you tell us when it will be for Samsung Galaxy, say cancel my subscription for that reason …
Support Wildfire Please! I am sick of these cheap copies available… Just leave this tale about the resolution, you don’t want to stay behind in this game do you? Comon guys, you have everything to rule!
anyway to support Android 1.6 system?
My Galaxy S Android 2.1 and my Skype credit do no want to wait anymore…
Works well on the Incredible.
Any news on when Skype will be working on Samsung Epic (Galaxy S) Android 2.1?
What about making video calls? Do I need Fring with it?
Can’t download on my HTC Legend. When I go to the site it tells me that skype isn’t available for my device……
Finally Skype – or better the lack of Skype was the reason I almost go an iPhone again, but now I’m happy on my Desire.
The logout functin is a bit too hidden, would be great to be able to access it from every screen.
Skype is working on my Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant this morning. Bell Canada
doesn’t work on SGS STILL WTF GUYS????? i’m switching to FRING
Just adding my vote of thanks for making this app available, although I appreciate how frustrating it must be for fellow Android users who can’t use it on their phones.
I concur that moving to SD would be a very useful feature but I can wait…
“Skype for Android is not available in China and Japan” F***!!!
I m based in Japan, waited for AGES!!!! for this stupid skype app, was completely upset about skype blocking access to FRING
and now I STILL cant use it
TOTALLY ANNOYING
SKype for Andoriod…woo-hoo…well….not REALLY!
It only works on some phones. As many have mentioned, the Galaxy S is the LATEST phone and it is NOT supported…but hey, wait…no problem:
Hi all the Galaxy S users!
I just KNOW that SKype is going to HATE this, and they may remove the post, I dunno, maybe not?
Since Skype is not able to work on a Galaxy S, there’s a simple little solution (scary that one has to post a competitor’s solution on this site!) – use NIMBUZ
I think it’s at http://www.nimbuz.com, but if you don’t find it, the market has it. I think that’s where I got mine.
It allows you to login to your skype account and voila!, you’re up and running on the galaxy s with skype (well, not skype, nimbuzz, but your skype account). You can even use your skypeout, BUT, even nicer, nimbuz also has their own nimbuzout.
And, the clincher: it supports yahoo, gtalk, winlive and a host of others, so, if you also have a gtalks account (which most people are getting more and more each day because of gmail and google), you can have all your contacts for all your im and telephone/voip in one single app. Even BETTER than just having skype.
As Samsung now has released Froyo (2.2) for the Galaxy S, Skype works like a charm.
Well this is all great, Now with teh Samsung Galaxy S 2.2 update Skype works!
But why oh why, can’t I hide all my offline contacts???
I just got the Samsung Epic (Galaxy S) and skype doesn’t work!! I can download, but it will not allow me to sign in! So sad. I’m with Sprint network.
Any ideas when it will be up and running? I use it alll the time!!
How did you get it working on your Galaxy S. I have Bell Canada. Still no luck signing in.
An Update:
The Skype statements at the top of the page are really confusing:
===
It’s free to use Skype in a WiFi zone. If you use Skype with a mobile data connection, operator charges may apply, so we recommend an unlimited data plan.

Oct 7th, in the USA, with my unlimited plan, I was using Skype to make Skype-to-Skype (S2S) calls over 3G in the US (Verizon) as my WiFi was turned off.
Today I am in Germany – Skype does not make calls at all here because there is no Verizon CDMA service and SKYPE DOES NOT work over WiFi.
Skype – My android device is essentially a brick here. The only apps of any use in Germany are the picture gallery, music collection, browser and notepad.
Other drawbacks are that I can’t turn off the the verizon network at all. If I could do that, the phone would work better (battery saving rather that the CDMA signals working at full force to find reception).
Aside from that – If there is an application that holds maps (acquired when 3g or wifi were active & allowed), it would truly be possible to actually map your route across an airplane trip as the airlines allow GPS devices during flight segments. It’s rumor that some airlines offer wifi on trips, it’s not possible with the inability to independently control cdma, and bluetooth. A side effect of not having a cdma turn off, the constant searchs for sign seem to confuse the system and now have to clear my droid with a battery “pull-n-pop” reset.
Its not working on my samsung galaxy s
I log in,get all my contacts, try to make call and skype crash down.
When can we expect support for sd card?
Very disappointing. Needs App2SD on Android desperately. 13 megabytes is unacceptable for an Android app. Until you allow Skype to run off the SD card, I’m not reinstalling it.
No 3G calling in the US is unacceptable. iPhone users on AT&T have it. T-Mobile allows it. Why is this feature disabled? Until you allow outgoing calls over 3G, I’m sticking with Fring and their outbound calling service. You’ve lost another customer out of the hundreds flocking to other solutions after this arbitrary and utter letdown.
Downloaded from Marketplace, installed, and performed test call over 3G – all without issue. Nexus One, 2.2.1, on Bell

Last week, in the USA, with my unlimited plan, I was using Skype to make Skype-to-Skype (S2S) voice calls over 3G in the US (Verizon) — my WiFi was turned off.
I was totally confused by Skype’s message above — as to whether I am able to make Skype calls over WiFi. However, now I am in Germany — Skype does not work over WiFi – Despite was written above and Verizon’s support line was like talking to a bunch of zeros — even after my insisting they double-check, they still told me that my DroidX with Skype would work fine. (In Germany, there’s no CDMA coverage … as in Verizon’s network.) Advice – Unless there’s some workaround, you are better off to take an IPod — at least you can completely turn off the cdma circuit and just ride on WiFi & bluetooth. If you travel, suffer thru AT&T.
Skype – Tell me if there’s a work-around or I am just carrying a brick?
Dear Skype,
Thanks for a great product.
HOWEVER please see if you can get it to work on HTC Wildfire. As you can see many around the world needs this to work on Wildfire.
I just bought this HTC and was told that its an android, so therefore can do Skype on it.
Very frustrated, as now cannot use it.
WHAT I dont understand is why screen resolution should be the problem.
Why cant Skype start out with the basic, like chat and skype phone calls. If video is the problem, then we can wait with that till later. However it would be great to have the basic.
I have Skype on PC, but would be nice to have my contacts to be able to reach me on chat when on the move.
I also have forward calls and all that, but need just that last bit from Skype.
PLEASE look into this HTC WILDFIRE ISSUE.
Otherwise thanks for giving us Skype…
works great, but it is to big to fit in the phone’s internal memory.
I have to uninstall it until it has the option to move to the sd card.
yea skype has problem with galaxy s having android 2.1. the reason is bcs samsung has modified the underlying operating system. however according to samsung they have started rolling out android 2.2 updates for their mobiles and skype team says that it is working fine as tested. so ask your nearest samsumg customer care about the os upgrade bcs m doing the same lol
Cannot download In market for my Telus Motorola CHarm, Due to size of screen ?? You Can Fix it ????
Can’t download onto a Samsung Galaxy GT (grrr! I use Skype a lot as have to travel all over the place).
Phone is selling like hotcakes in Oz.
When can we get it?
Is it already available for Samsung S5603t?
Skype not appears in market of my Telus Motorola Charm ….
Not working on T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S.
It is installed but wount let you to sign in.
It says that I am accessing Skype through unsupported browser.
Don’t really know why it says browser.

It works on my SGS!! Don’t use the Skype internet link – get it direct from the Android market. To make things clear my SGS is as follows
Former Vodafone SGS 16GB totally debranded.
NOT Rooted
Updated to official 2.2 (Froyo)
Baseband version: I9000XXJPM
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9
Build: FROYO.XWJP6
It is basically a ‘stock’ 16GB without any hacks – I fooled Kies into updating my UK model with the official software from Norway – it worked wonderfully and after a full week of full on use the update is fine.
Skype worked instantly for chat and voice – there is no video option.
um.. if you arent offering skype in certain countries could you please add this to your blog. also if theres a problem with it not appearing on the market since we don’t get paid apps, can you seperate your app into the free version and full version please?
im from sri lanka with htc desire running froyo and so far no skype for me. it says my handset is not supported on your website so im guessing that means my country isn’t supported.
disappointed in the skype teams lack of transparency on this issue. greece, toga, spain and many other countries have not been able to get this yet and skype doesn’t say anything about it.
When will Skype be available for Samsung Galaxy S? I was told at the store that it works, but I get a message that this phone is not supported. Should I return the phone?
Hi…I got HTC tatoo. I cant get skype on it. I am using skype extensively on my computer. However, I want to have on my HTC Tattoo mobile. Can you please guide whether any link available to download skype for this phone.
