Skype now available for Android phones
Skype for Android has been updated to work on the Samsung Galaxy S too.
You’ve been asking us for it – and now it’s here. Skype is now available on a wide range of Android phones, so you can save money and stay in touch when you’re out and about. Visit skype.com/m on your phone to download, or read on to find out what’s inside.
With the new app, you can make free Skype-to-Skype calls, and send and receive IMs for free, one-to-one or with a group. You can also call phones at Skype’s great rates – over WiFi or 3G.
To make calls to phones abroad, simply dial the number in Skype and pay with Skype Credit – or make unlimited calls with a subscription. When you’re abroad, we recommend that you connect to a WiFi zone for best value.
If you already use Skype on a computer, you'll see your full contact list when you sign in to Skype on your Android phone. If not, you can set up an account and be ready to go in minutes.
Product Manager Mark Douglas explains how the app works.
You can download Skype from the Android Market, or from skype.com/m on your phone. You’ll need Android OS 2.1 or later – check Settings > About if you’re not sure what version your phone is running.
Skype is not available in the Android Market in China or Japan.
Skype has been tested on HTC and Motorola devices with Android OS 2.1 and above. It may work on other Android phones, but we can’t guarantee full functionality or compatibility. We’re aware of some problems with the Samsung Galaxy S, and we’re looking to address these in the future.
It’s free to use Skype in a WiFi zone. If you use Skype with a mobile data connection, operator charges may apply, so we recommend an unlimited data plan.
In the US, you can make calls only over WiFi.
A fair use policy applies to unlimited subscriptions.
Your text above is really confusing:

This morning, in the USA, with my unlimited plan, I was using Skype to make Skype-to-Skype (S2S) calls over 3G in the US (Verizon) as my WiFi was turned off.
I’m totally confused as to whether I can make Skype calls over WiFi when I go to Germany. (No CDMA coverage … as in Verizon’s network.)
Skype – Tell me — Do I need to lag a laptop to talk with my fellow Skype-heads?
I have downloaded Skype for my HTC Desire. Everything is fine except one minor problem.
I have set the App to sync my existing Skype Contacts with my Android contacts.
However this doesn’t seem to happen. My Skype contacts do not appear to my android contacts.
When i choose the contact source (Phone contacts, google, facebook etc) , Skype appears as a source, but the number of contacts is 0.
Am i doing something wrong?
It would also be a nice addition if Skype was showing in the online directories.
AWESOME!!! Now let’s work on the video chat for Sprint EVO please!!!!!
Great that its arrived but 14MB is a very large app. To be useful this needs the ability to move it onto a SD card for froyo. I had to delete many, many apps to be able to fit it onto my HTC Desires internal memory!
Please make it possible to run on devices with larger screens and with LCD Density that is not 240. I use on one device 167 and one 180 and the app just force closes after I press a contact or any other tab. I can only sign-in and scroll.
It seems that the “Activities” of Call/Chat/Info are failing when the size of the screen is reported differently because of the difference in density.
I tried it for my HTC Hero w 2.1
Sound quality is good but stutters and crackles a lot in both directions, Anybody experiencing the same issues?
I still can’t log in to Skype on my HTC Desire. Ive gone through the hassle of changing my password and still its says ‘password incorrect’ when I know it isnt.
Anyone else having this problem?
Skype for HTC Wildfire PLEASE. It’s Not fair that only top models get the app.
Well Done Skype! Been long coming, runs like a dream on Desire with 2.2.
I love that I can keep my work skype and mobile skype logged in at the same time!
i got it to work on my Galaxy S i9000
but i need to use another browser and maybe i got lucky
I got it to work on my Samsung Galaxy S i9000, try to install opera mini as browser and let it be our default the i got it to work…
but maybe in the future Skype need to get this app work with standart browser in Samsung Phones…
It’s great news this has been released for Android.
I’m using it on a HTC desire 2.2 in the UK and cannot see any way to make a call using a bluetooth headset. Can this be added to the list of features to add soon ?
Ta.
Doesnt work on Samsung Galaxy mini or i5800 – just crashes if you press on a contact. please fix this as this is one of the best apps ever for me and i cant wait to use it. Get this fixed please.
I join the othes in demanding support for the HTC Wildfire
Hi, i’m using HTC Desire with Android 2.2 The skype.com/m said it is not available for my phone … But i can read others already have ?
Pretty please get me Skyping on Samsung Galaxy S “Sprint Epic 4G.” You must understand that only Skype can make this phone truly “EPIC.”
It’s not working for me on a Nexus One — when I try and login I get the message “we’re sorry but that Skype Name does not exist”, but I entered the same name and password I entered to log into this site.
Samsung has sold over 5 million Galaxy S phones as of today, 7 October. Please Skype, let’s get this fixed and released. I’ve been a Skype user since 2005, and I can use the mobile app on a 5 year old Windows Mobile 5 device but not a brand new Android phone. Very frustrating!
Ignore my previous comment, it was a configuration error on my part.
It’s frustrating to know that Skype does not work on phones with previous versions of Android 2.1. I can not understand this. And that gives banks the strange rumors as technical inability, new business model or something like that.
support Htc Wildfire pls.
I’m going to just add one more request to the pile… Needs video calling feature over WiFi/4G/3G…
no-go on my T-Mob Vibrant
Error:
> Can’t Sign In
We’re Sorry but we couldn’t blah blah blah…”
Ok, I’ll wait “patiently” for the fix :::shakes fist:::
Skype for HTC Wildfire please… Too many users without the possibility to use this application!!!
I did try to download skype on my Nexus one from Android market But it took a long time waiting for starting to download but nothing happen at last, what should I do?
I was all set to celebrate, until I found out my shiny new Epic is unsupported. Now I’m a saaaad mousey all over again. No skype for me while I’m out of the house. ;_;
Any idea when Skype will be available for the G1?
I used to have Skype Lite, but my phone went in for repairs in Feb and I was disappointed to find that the app was wiped and I couldn’t reload because you’d removed it from the markeplace.
Also, I wanted to get an online number with skype, so that my family in Tasmania, Australia could use it to contact me, but it seems that Tasmania is the only state that doesn’t have this capability. Can you respond and let me know when it might be coming?
Put me down for HTC Wildfire support too!
Call quality on the test call was abysmal, breaks up and slows down after about 40 seconds. Haven’t tried a real call but have no reason to believe it would be any different. Notifications for received messages don’t seem to work either on HTC Desire. I did have the actual chat section open but with the screen turned off and phone on standby and receiving a chat message gave me no sound or any kind of notification.
Also going to skype.com/m as indicated about on the HTC Desire states that there is no version available for my phone yet it’s available from the Marketplace (where I got it) and works on my phone plus the phone pictured above is a Desire.
I too have the same problem with the contacts not showing up on the Desire People app. It shows Skype as a source but incorrectly lists the number of contacts as 0.
Also the app doesn’t remember my setting it to log in automatically. Despite this being ticked in settings I still have to type my password in every time.
I found it to install great on the Acer Liquid E, but the outgoing call volume is way too low. Not really usable.
HTC WILDFIRE 5 months old model No SKYPE?? Don’t get it even though the resolution is lower there should be Skype app. Come on I have credit to use here.
I also need HTC Wildfire support. Can you just make a simpler user interface for lower resolution devices? Android is not just for high-end, expensive devices anymore. The number of more compact and more inexpensive Android devices is increasing drastically.
Not working on Desire in Canada. Operator is Telus. Says Unavailable for this phone.
Sorry Got it to work 1 time after i need to restart phone then it has not worked sins
i allso think Skype need to pull some all nighters and get it DONE!!!!!!
Works very well on the HTC Desire. The real issue for me is the lack of SMS. Please add this functionality, it will make a massive difference!!! Any chance in the near future???
Also I’ll be switching to Froyo shortly, so being able to move the app to the SD card would be much appreciated.
Nexus One 2.2.1 automatic sign in does not work until you start typing your password. does not stay signed in even though it says in status bar sykpe signed in thus you are not able to receive calls. otherwise great. on the whole – until these issues are resolved it is quite useless!
I am another new Samsung Galaxy S user and a skype user since it was first used. Skype please get the login barrier fixed so I can enjoy using Skype again
Just a little word from a “non-Android” user:
For those of you who don’t like the fact that in the US you can only use it via Wifi: BE HAPPY! If you were a Blackberry user in any country other than the US and/or not with Verizon, you would not even be entitled to that!
Great to finally have this on my mobile!
Still a few issues:
The fact that there are no notification sounds is a real problem as pointed out by a few comments here. The only way you know someone is contacting you is if you happen to be looking at the phone at the time.
Also, whilst in a Skype call, regular calls and texts still come through (which can frighten the life out of you if your phone suddenly starts ringing and vibrating against your ear!)
Will be waiting for an update! Don’t keep your customers waiting too long.

@buran4ik unfortunately the screen on the HTC Wildfire is too small to run Skype – you need a minimum resolution of 480×320 pixels.
This explanation is not logic. since its running on my old Nokia E75 with the same resolution like the HTC Wildfire, why it requires more pixel at the HTC? By the way, I installed it on my HTC WF but it shut down as soon as i try to use it. there is no resolution difficulty – but may be my technically understanding is to limited.
Michael
i have same problem with galaxy s. can install but can’t login. could be nice to spend my skype credits for calling abroad.
I’m another disappointed Android user. I’ve just recharged my credit willing to call home from abroad and I still can’t. This is borderline and I’m just about asking for my money back.
1. I just can’t sign in. I could once and never again.
2. As I can’t sign in again, I can’t exit, since it remains in the background and the icon in the status bar
3. After reboot the phone I could finally sign in. But it becomes irresponsible and forces close.
Why Skype rolls out such a bad version. They at least should say it’s a beta.
I have SAMSUNG GALAXY S- IT’S NOT WORKING- no way to log in. Are you kidding me guys! What a rubbish services. When you are planning to address this issue? Look true this comments, how many people complains. What’s the point for realising the app if it’s not working propely on all handsets
Works on my Droid X, but I mistakenly hit the power button to terminate a call (which it didn’t) and when I powered it back on, the GUI was unresponsive – I couldn’t hang up! I tried holding down home to get the list of active apps and selected Skype, but still couldn’t get a response from the GUI. I had to do a hard power-off to disconnect.
Still doesn’t work on Samsung Galaxy S, when is it going to be fixed guys?
Why in the world you put all the publicity about getting SKYPE on Android with HTC DESIRE, and once someone go to skype.com/m with a DESIRE tells device unsoported!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Skype has been tested on HTC and Motorola devices with Android OS 2.1 and above” It’s not working on HTC Wildfire, how bad it was tested? Even not available in the UK Android Market, I found skype v1.0.0.538.apk in google but it crashes all the time on wildfire, probably that’s why downloading page and android market doesn’t show app. Please make it work on Wildfire!
Another thing about HTC Wildfire resolution
Video Call???
