Skype now available for Android phones
Skype for Android has been updated to work on the Samsung Galaxy S too.
You’ve been asking us for it – and now it’s here. Skype is now available on a wide range of Android phones, so you can save money and stay in touch when you’re out and about. Visit skype.com/m on your phone to download, or read on to find out what’s inside.
With the new app, you can make free Skype-to-Skype calls, and send and receive IMs for free, one-to-one or with a group. You can also call phones at Skype’s great rates – over WiFi or 3G.
To make calls to phones abroad, simply dial the number in Skype and pay with Skype Credit – or make unlimited calls with a subscription. When you’re abroad, we recommend that you connect to a WiFi zone for best value.
If you already use Skype on a computer, you'll see your full contact list when you sign in to Skype on your Android phone. If not, you can set up an account and be ready to go in minutes.
Product Manager Mark Douglas explains how the app works.
You can download Skype from the Android Market, or from skype.com/m on your phone. You’ll need Android OS 2.1 or later – check Settings > About if you’re not sure what version your phone is running.
Skype is not available in the Android Market in China or Japan.
Skype has been tested on HTC and Motorola devices with Android OS 2.1 and above. It may work on other Android phones, but we can’t guarantee full functionality or compatibility. We’re aware of some problems with the Samsung Galaxy S, and we’re looking to address these in the future.
It’s free to use Skype in a WiFi zone. If you use Skype with a mobile data connection, operator charges may apply, so we recommend an unlimited data plan.
In the US, you can make calls only over WiFi.
A fair use policy applies to unlimited subscriptions.
Its very good on the HTC Desire HD but takes a while to refresh on chat. If my PC says someone is online my phone wont show it for a while or is not refreshing. Would be nice if there was a refresh key or something. Also no notification sound cannot be changed or adjusted in level
I cannot believe I’ve just upgraded to a Galaxy S and that Skype doesn’t work on it. OK, I should have double-checked but I’m sorry, in this day and age and given the popularity of the Galaxy S, this is completely ridiculous.
Please can something from Skype confirm a date by when they’ll have sorted out this mess?
It doesn’t working on Samsung Galaxy S! I installed it, but couldn’t log in. That’s so badm so sad! Not acceptable! Please fix it!
Galaxy S 2.1 in India is still not compatible with Skype. The login process never ends on it. Please do something on priority basis.
dos not work skype.com/m when i press the button to downlaod in my SAMSUNG GALAXY 5.
with Android 2.1 ..
From Chile, South America
I wish you could release a lean, mean little version that would work on my creaky LG GT540 (which was obsolete out-of-the-box and still runs 1.6). I would only need the most basic speech functionality. I can’t keep up with all these upgrades, and neither can my hardware
But thanks all the same. Skype is great!
Works great on HTC Desire just wish it could be installed to the SD card as 9.35 MB takes a lot of the phones internal memory
Still doesn’t work on my Wildfire!! Any idea when this will be available? I was really a big fan of Skype but am losing interest with this Wildfire issue! With all the android phones being sold lately, I ecpected Skype to be more prepared for this!!
I am also unable to use it on my new Samsung Galaxy S. In understand that many others have posted about this and that you have provided this response: …”we’re sorry about this – we hope to address the problems in future”.
You HOPE to address this? You definitely SHOULD!
Well, it will not install on my Samsung Galaxy S. Latest update. Still no go….possible to get an ETA for this program?
Had to uninstall. Get back to me when I can install it to the SD Card, 12Mb is way too big.
Works great on my Samsung Galaxy S with Froyo. (yes Froyo is available Belgium now)
Wow thats a breakthrough then! so if i format n install froyo on my galaxy s = skype logs in n works? !
n the story with no KIES for the mac is really really sad
Very, very annoying that you can’t shut this down without logging out (and having to login again when you turn it on). Really inconvenient and amazing that this was missed during QA. I hope this is fixed soon.
Not available for LG GT540. What a load of bollox!
Samsung Galaxy S get it fixed,
The quicker you fix it the more money you make Skype
Cheers
Works perfectly on Galaxy Tab P1000 – but can’t sort by online contacts???
driving me insane!
Some of the Samsung Galaxy and many other phones have front facing cameras. Any plans to have video chat eventually come to your Android program?
Am eagerly waiting to use skype on Samsung Galaxy 3. Please fix it soon.
I think this app is useless if it doesnt support video chat yes it does what it says but come on we purchase these high tech video phones so that we can video chat and skype is one of the most used programs for that purpose so pleas asap update this app so we can video chat thanks
Hi could you please tell me when Skype will work on the Alcatel OT980 ? Cos it downloads 100% and then advises that it was unsuccessful. Please help
Got to agree with all the comments from the last 2 months about Galaxy S; probably the most popular Android phone on the market and Skype still not fixed to work on the phone.
Come on Skype developers, how far away is the fix ?!?!
Does not sign in on a Samsung Epic 4G (Galaxy S)…
Installed on my EVO 4G. Realized that it lacked video call feature, uninstalled. Guess it is back to QIK.
I cannot log in on my Samsung Galaxy S (Captivate) on AT&T in the US. Is there a fix due in the next release? Or am I the only one with a problem?
Can’t download it from marketplace with my Desire HD. Everytime marketplace says “The requested item could not be found”
Will skype be made compatible with earlier versions of Android? i.e. version 1.6?
Runs fine on my Archos 70, can sign out just fine, and the application can be killed using a utility to kill apps. Was disappointing to see that I couldn’t utilize my camera to make a video call. Not sure why something like that would not be considered especially when the top android tablets have built-in cameras. Hope you guys add that capability soon.
Not shown in the Market.
Using a Nexus One with 2.2.1 from Pakistan.

Skype was perfect on Fring, i made many video calls, was wonderful!
but Skype got out Fring
Skype was very good on Nimbuzz, almost wonderful!
but Skype got out Nimbuzz
too bad, Skype is a shit!
I’m Italian and live in China here Skype works fine on N1 with Froyo both on 3G and wifi but I have a problem when the system switch automatically from G3 to WIFi or vice versa. Skype frozen and have to push many times the back button (home button doesn’t work) in order to get the message that Skype application doesn’t answer then I force stop and have to launch the client again.
The question is: it’s my fault or Skype should fix this issue?
Moreover the application must be moved to the SD card.
@ dhai13
i have the same problem on my Captivate. It is says Logging in and the circle is moving but it goes forever. It says in the specifications, that the galaxy Ss need Adroid V2.2 software, but i also have trouble updating the software.
I need a DIALPAD in SkypeCalls !!! Pleaseeeee …
I had Skype Mobile on my G1, did a hard reset today, now I get the message
“Sorry, Skype mobile is not available for your phone. Switch to one of Verizon’s best-selling Blackberry and Android 3G smartphones.”
My G1 is a Android 3G smartphone. Do they mean, sorry dude you must go buy a new Android now?
Hi there guys, just one question. Do you have skype for android installed on netbooks?
And if you do, where can i download it? Thanks and regards!!!
plz fix it for smasung galaxy series too….
Please help!
Skype Android is not running properly on my Dell Streak 2.2 Android. After installation my Dell Streak is frozen or very long reaction time of all other functions. Mostly I have to re-boot the device!
Is there an update to solve this problem?
Just installed on an upgraded v2.2 Galaxy S, seems to work fine.
I second comment that there should really be video chat support. I am looking at other apps that can do this (such as “Fring” which can be downloaded free from android market). Come on skype, I love your computer version, dont wait and lose market share, push the android video chat out.
Finally come..but not on Galaxy! Also, if we have the program from other market, can we still use Skype in Mainland China? I was forced to use other similar program…Really want to stay with Skype.
Its a great news for androiders. Just want to know if we can make video calls through this as we make through PC.
Many Thanks
So, Skype. Oops. Aside from all the errors above, there seems to be one serious flaw with your application. It cannot work over WiFi only? I am sat in a hotel, Skypeless, because to login the phone must be able to make a data connection to the mobile network data gateway. This means overseas to use Skype, even over WiFi, we must enable data roaming? For most users that causes fear and distress. I simply won’t do it and I see no reason in the world to have utilized this method. It is ridiculous. The time you most need Skype and it is un-usable!
There are now Tablet devices with front facing cameras…. when is the Skype Android version SUPPORTING VIDEO going to catch up ? … am I forced to move to FRING ?
Hi, I am here at Malaysia with Digi. I have a HTC Desire Z running on 2.2 Tried to download it via SMS on Skype’s web page. Skype says SMS link sent, but never received it. I also use the Andorid Marktplace on the smartphone to look for the app, but get a return msg saying “The requested item could not be found.” Then I try Skyp.com/m to download but got a msg “Not Found Error 404″
Pls advise how to overcome my problem, tks.
Firstly it is unfortunate that the android Skype app does not allow you to rate the quality of your call as you were asked to do on pc based Skype not so long ago. Secondly I make daily calls using my previous (not android) phone using skype and the quality of the call was pretty good. Unfortunately the Android Skype app does not seem to work so well on my HTC Desire and my calls have a truly horrible quality. I have downloaded the new update and am still having the same issues. I truly hope you can sort this quality issue quickly.
Thanks Skype for an almost perfect App but I have noticed that it doesnt refresh very well at all. Friends may be online but my phone shows that they arent or vice versa. It also causes issues when someone is trying to call me. Sometimes works, sometimes not. It takes quite a while to update or refresh online status’s so having a “refresh” button or an option where we are able to constantly refresh automatically would make it perfect.
HTC Desire HD 2.2 Froyo
Can’t find it in the market nor download it from Skype.com/m.
I have a previous beta version I used in my previous HTC magic. Works very well on froyo, only problem: you can only chat, can’t make calls, however you can receive calls. I send a message to my daughter and the calls me. I have the apk.
Contact me If you want it (not on the market anymore).
The beta version I have works very well (justamente for chating though) on my froyo as well as in my previous HTC magic running on Android 1.5
Can’t find your app in the Android Market (if I search directly from Android Market).
So, I went to “skype.com/m” then appeared “ERROR 404, NOT FOUND” (I’ve chosen two downloading ways: From the internet and from the Android Market” and I’ve got the same answer).
