Skype mobile for Verizon Wireless now available

Skype mobile on DROID contact listIf you’re a Verizon customer with a smartphone and a data plan, you can now download Skype mobile :)

It’ll help you stay in touch with friends, family and colleagues all over the world, by allowing you to:

  • make and receive unlimited Skype-to-Skype voice calls to anyone else on Skype around the globe
  • send and receive unlimited instant messages with other people on Skype
  • call international phone numbers at our low rates

Today, the app will work on BlackBerry Storm 9530, Storm2 9550, Curve 8330, Curve 8530, 8830 World Edition and Tour 9630 smartphones, as well as DROID by Motorola, DROID ERIS by HTC and the Motorola DEVOUR. We’ll add support for more phones and platforms later this year.

Skype mobile uses the Verizon Wireless voice network for the wireless connection of the Skype-to-Skype calls, giving you a reliable connection and top-notch call quality.

Skype-to-Skype calls will not be charged against your monthly minute allowance or data plan. To make calls to international landline or mobile numbers, you’ll need to buy Skype Credit.

Download the app now to put the planet in your pocket.

I uninstalled skype mobile from my HTC Incredible because of issues including, no synching of contacts with the PC version, unblockable spam, no wifi support, etc. Maybe I’ll give it another shot if they refine the program in the future.

If your Nokia phone is on this list then you should be able to download Skype and use it just fine. Otherwise, I’m afraid you’ll have to stay tuned for additional phone support announcements later this year – I can’t make any promises though!

Is there a way to block people in Skype Mobile (Verizon) from sending a Skype chat if they are not in your contact list? The desktop version has this ability. The only feature I see in Skype Mobile is to block callers who aren’t in your contact list, not chatters. This is absolutely a necessity to block spammers. I never have this issue on my desktop version because I block chats if they are not in my contact list. And now that until i set up Skype Mobile on my phone, within days I have spam. Please advise as to why this block functionality is missing from Skype Mobile?

Pretty disappointed that it is over the voice network at Verizon. If it was supported over 3G or WIFI, I would not have to sign up for Verizon’s voice plan for $40 but just the unlimited data plan, and instead have subscribed for the unlimited U.S. & Canada monthly plan from Skype for $3, and come up with a $37 savings for calls. The international calling feature is cool, but I am currently using Skype to Go from my Windows Mobile phone to achieve the same low rate provided by Skype with my Skype Credit. I guess I need to wait to purchase my next phone until Skype is available over 3G for the iPhone, so I can forego purchasing a voice plan at AT&T.

Hi is there any word on updates regarding the issue of spam? The verizon faq mentiones that the setting set on PC should transfer to skype mobile, but that is clearly not the case with “only contacts” set in all instances possible both on the pc and mobile version…
That faq also mentions that read messages can reoccur as unread in skype mobile when resigning in, is there an update coming to amend this? it only really affects me for the few spam that have already occured, but it nevertheless annoying.
Otherwise I really like the application, being in US with family in Europe have been a life saver to get all their skype call at any given time as a normal phone call without it costing them anything.
    Thanks.

Verizon charged me from skype to skype. The spec were droid to itouch running skype. They credited my account and i guess the spec was that i had an account with west states. not a nation wide plan. That is my only explanation. if you work for skype or verixon please respond to my email at mikedeem1@yahoo.com.

I have multiple numbers (home, office, cell) for 1 contact. How do I view them all on my Verizon phone? It only shows the first number and I can’t figure out how to access to the rest of the numbers. thanks.

  8. peterparkes said 1087 days ago

@wouland we released an update some time ago which should have address the settings problem – please let me know if you’re still receiving messages from people who aren’t on your contact list.

@tennismike this is something that Verizon support should be able to help you with – glad you were able to get your account credited.

@yenchih5817 you should be able to see all of the numbers from within Skype – for help with your phone’s address book, get in touch with Verizon support.

  9. yenchih5817 said 1085 days ago

Peter, the support from Skype said that the function is not available. Also, it keeps showing “connecting” all day today. There seem to be a lot of trouble still for this program.

The new Skype application for Verizon is either poorly or disingenuously designed. Let me explain. I had been using the application from its launch on my Storm to call the UK.

Turns out, after being slapped with $300 in long distance charges, that none of the calls that I had been making through the Skype application were being billed this way. The reason being is that I was dialing in the numbers in the skype application but without a + sign in front of the number. So I was in the Skype application, dialing in the correct field, but because I didn’t dial a + sign first it was charging directly to my Verizon account.

For 2 weeks I was back and forth with Verizon trying to troubleshoot what was going on, and they at the end of all of this told me that I was stuck with the bill. I decided to make one last call, got talking to someone quite knowledgeable in Verizon’s tech support who I spent over an hour on the phone with, and struck a deal to have the $300 bill reduced to their international phone rate. So instead of the nearly $2 a minute, they reduced it to the 25 cents a minute I would be charged to mobile phones in the UK if I had a long distance plan (which at the time I didn’t).

So to all of you out there using the app, you’ve been warned! Not sure if Verizon has done this as a source of revenue generation or if in fact the Skype application is legitimately crap do to a huge oversight. If it does not say ‘Skype call’ after you’ve dialed, expect a fat bill in the mail and terrible customer service to follow.

@shanejw sorry hear about your experience – that doesn’t sound great at all. I’ve passed your comment on to the team at Skype working on the partnership. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can help with in the meantime.

  12. peterparkes said 1081 days ago

@shanejw I’ve spoken to our mobile team, and they tell me that this should be fixed in a forthcoming update to the app. Sorry about your experience!

    Helllo All,

I have a verizon 3g[ Droid] connection and have skype calling credit account- when I try to call US numbers, they are getting routed via wireless carrier plan. How can I use my skype credit account to make calls to US numbers from my verizon 3g phone- any suggestions are appreciated.

    Tnx

Maybe another company will have a system that works same as Skype (not iskoot) that we can use on our blackberry 9700, the iphone is rubbish, no good for business, SO WHY HAVE SKYPE forgotten us …

Need Skype app for HTC G1 (Android OS, T-Mobile)… Limiting it to Verizon service borderlines with word “RIDICULOUS”. When you, Skype (and @peterparkes), gonna get a grip of reality and come to terms with market needs? Are you waiting for competition to push you out? If you gonna play these “games” with public, people will start closing Skype accounts (that crossed my mind many times already) you’ll end up in the “hole” with Verizon. That’s for sure…

@Peter Parkes The need for Skype over WiFI on the Android OS is tremendous.

The first issue is Verizon’s equipment. I don’t know about many of the other Android OS phones from VZW, but the Motorola Droid 825 only has CDMA capability, NO GSM capability. As soon as you leave North America, the only way it has any communication with the rest of the world is through WiFi.

The second issue is that even if it was a GSM phone, I would need to either go find and buy a SIM card in that country, and who knows how the charges would come out on that, going through the Voice channel instead of the 3G data pipe, OR I would need to subscribe to VZW’s international Data plan, if there is such a thing. If Skype Mobile for Android supported WiFi calling, none of that would need to take place.

Thirdly, there is an alternative. It’s to carry another device. Skype on a PSP, iPod Touch, or even my old Windows Mobile VX6700 phone, would use the free WiFi at the Airport or the Hotel to make SkypeOut calls. I could even pop open a $250 netbook and throw on a headset to make the same calls. But users don’t want to carry ANOTHER device, especially when traveling internationally. We already carry too many gadgets, power adapters, usb cables, etc.

Instead, Skype on the Motorola Droid has no function at all the minute the phone leaves North America. So the minute they close the cabin door in Atlanta, my Droid has less functionality than a Netbook, which incidentally, costs less.

I simply don’t understand how Skype doesn’t release Skype Mobile for Android OS into the worldwide Android Market, and let it run over WiFi, as it does on the aforementioned iPod, PSP, Windows Mobile, etc.

I agree with f0rd. This app does nothing for the people overseas. Luckily I am still in my 30 day grace period with Verizon….. Next up AT&T.

I am trying to uninstall Skype from my Droid, but when I go to “Manage Apps” Skype is not one of the applications listed; therefore, I cannot uninstall it. How does one uninstall Skype from the Droid once it has been installed?

Any idea when the app will work over wifi? It would be nice to have at least the text-based services at my house where I unfortunately do not get 3g coverage.

I have a Skpye Pro account, but I am having trouble making a phone call to France. So, I downloaded the Skype Mobile app for my Verizon Droid phone, specifically to call international numbers. I am in the US (CA), but Verizon is blocking my calls to France. Is this supposed to happen?

Any idea when skype mobile for droid will be available in canada? I downloaded it but found i cant use it here, and theres no wayto uninstall it or keeping it from running in the back of my droid incredible.

I had used this on my Blackberry tour for a while but now it refuses to dial the access number. My wife’s Storm 2 works fine. I can receive calls and I can text but can’t dial out. I have reinstalled the app and I have reinstalled the OS. Nothing fixes this. I have to text a friend to call me for it to work. thankfully I rarely use this, though I want to use it more often.

  24. rhok4me said 911 days ago

I am also disappointed Skype will not work on a wifi with the Droid 2 on Verizon. Unless they loosen the leash, I will need to get something else to make calls when I am in Europe. Complaining aside, if and when will we see Verizon allow online numbers from Skype?

I’m very disappointed with this app…..Don’t cheat by doing such a cheap business and the SKYPE GUYS should test their app before releasing in to the market….I run over my monthly minutes in a span of two weeks…I’m making calls from droid to iphone and i taught that the calling from skype to skype was free…..but the verizon was using my calling minutes….Is the same happens to any of the guys and is there any solution to rectify from this. I saw //tennismike// also has the same problem. skype guys respond to this…try to rectify the problem..
