Skype mobile for Verizon Wireless available from Thursday
From Thursday 25th March, if you’re a Verizon customer with a smartphone and a data plan, you’ll be able to download Skype mobile.
It’ll help you stay in touch with friends, family and colleagues all over the world, by allowing you to:
- make and receive unlimited Skype-to-Skype voice calls to anyone else on Skype around the globe
- send and receive unlimited instant messages with other people on Skype
- call international phone numbers at our low rates
Initially, the app will work on BlackBerry Storm 9530, Storm2 9550, Curve 8330, Curve 8530, 8830 World Edition and Tour 9630 smartphones, as well as DROID by Motorola, DROID ERIS by HTC and the Motorola DEVOUR. We’ll add support for more phones and platforms later this year.
Skype mobile uses the Verizon Wireless voice network for the wireless connection of the Skype-to-Skype calls, giving you a reliable connection and top-notch call quality.
Skype-to-Skype calls will not be charged against your monthly minute allowance or data plan. To make calls to international landline or mobile numbers, you’ll need to buy Skype Credit.
To make sure you’re among the first to know when the app is ready for download, subscribe to this blog, follow @skypemobile on Twitter, or become a fan of Skype on Facebook. Or, if you’re already a Verizon Wireless customer, just text SKYPE to 2255 and we’ll text you back a link when it’s ready. Not long now ![]()
Anyone stuck in a ‘upgrade’ loop. v1.0.0.5 requires me to upgrade to v1.0.06, but my Blackberry Tour 9630 freezes about 15% into the upgrade. Blackberry Desktop Manager also fails to do the uninstall. Am I the only person with this problem?
@davidkatzensteinskype you should contact Verizon Wireless support for help with this.
Had the same issue as davidk….
spoke to verizon support. they told me i need os5 to run .6. haven’t upgraded to os5 yet as I have read of issues.
Ok first off why are only Verizon android phones getting Skype mobile while the rest of the android users are stuck with Skype Lite? Are non Verizon android users going to get Skype Mobile as well?
As for iPhone, I can see a lot of companies switching focus to android. After all there are currently more android users than iPhone users and we all know most companies go with biggest market which is why Windows gets more software than Mac and Linux.
this is a verygood happiness service
Why isnt there a skype for Cure 8520?? or is this only available for Verizon, i am on Bharti Airtel.

I would really like Skype on my BB 9700. Any word on when this will happen?
I run Skype on a Droid Incredible.
I love it as my father located in China and I converse every other day for free on a phone that is easy to move about. I really dislike talking at my PC.
Maybe I am the minority but I appreciate the fact that only a slow 1x connection is required to run it(that is all that is available in my home). Using the cell network for voice works brilliantly.
Happy
@ Peter Parkes >>>I realize that Verizon has a large customer base, but why are the rest of us with Blackberries penalized for not dealing with Verizon. I am writing from Canada and counldn’t deal with verizon if I wanted to. If I had the Iphone I could skype, why not on the Blackberry?
Hello, Why just for Verizon? I would like to have it on My 9520 in Germany, When will be possible to use Skype outside USA?
Hi,
I’m moving to England for 1 yr. I was thinking of buying the Unlimited US Skype Plan (~$30per year unlimited calling to mobiles & landlines in the US). Can I use this subscription to call someone’s US mobile or landline while I’m IN the United Kingdom? Also, does this subscription allow me to call someone in the US on Skype who has the Skype application on their Verizon Droid Incredible?
Thanks much!
@yamuna.gnanadev unfortunately neither – the app works only in the US at the moment, and calls to US numbers are counted as part of your Verizon minutes allowance. One of our other mobile apps might be a better fit – we have a deal with 3 in the UK, for example.
iphonelost out when it signed up with the 2ND LARGEST CELL PHONE COMPANY in THE US…..Verizon Wireles IS THE best and most reliable cell phone provider out of AT&T & T-Mobile, I know this because I have also had AT&T & T-mobile in the past and will NEVER GO BACK to either one of them, so SKYPE signed up with the #1 and most reliable mobile phone provider in the USA, which is VERIZON WIRELESS, which DOES COVER more than 97% of all Americans who own mobile phones. It does not matter, if you have a phone like the iphone and it’s with a cell phone provider, like AT&T that DOES NOT have the largest & most reliable netwok in the USA, then it makes since as to WHY SKYPE chose VERIZON WIRELESS over AT&T and the iphone….it’s not ONLY the phone that counts, but also the SERVICE PROVIDER that provides SERVICE to that PHONE…in short….iphone…good phone….AT&T service….less that reliable.
I do agree with a few of these posts. I had an iphone, I now have both the ANDROID & Blackberry, both with SKYPE in them and I will NEVER go back to the iphone which is NOT ALL THAT, I much rather have my Blackberry & Droid rather than an iphone.
Everyone has to remember…..having a GREAT PHONE/MOBILE DEVICE means NOTHING unless that phone is activated with the BEST SERVICE PROVIDER’S NETWORK.

This is pretty lame. I have Sprint and just upgraded from a Palm Pro to a Blackberry Bold 9650. The Skype App downloaded fine on my BB, but won’t run because it isn’t a VZW phone. I used to run Skype no problem with Sprint on my Palm (Windows Mobile 6.1) and I am intensely disappointed that I can’t run it on my BB. As noted above, Skype is used by millions of people all over the world, most of which don’t have VZW, nor is VZW available to them. I call foul Skype! Shame on you! Thank you for making the world a bit smaller!
Rick D. Michaels, the epitome of a willing, almost supplicant, corporate condom. What are Skype (and thus users) signing up for? Who’s getting paid for the apartheid? Skype is an internet phone service, why won’t it run on other providers mobile internet? Who the hell are these people? Why can I not choose to run skype on any service providers mobile internet? Why would skype ever have any bloody say in my mobile provider?
@eternally.jarnex we have a range of apps which will work on any network too.

As long as your Blackberry is on Verizon. Do you understand simple ideas? Obvious fiscal paraphillia. Is that what you hoped your comment would illustrate?
Skype mobile for Verizon Wireless available from Thursday! NOT! Call Verizon and ask…. this is FALSE unless you tell me how to do it when Verizon will still charge $1.29/ min on top of SKYPE!
I want to check if Skype to Skype is really free. A couple of months ago I received a Skype call that originated on PC.
A couple of days later I noticed 60+ minutes deducted from my monthly allowance. I called Verizon and after the support person spent a while figuring out the situation, I was told that only calls initiated on the phone are free. They returned my 60 minutes at the time, but in general there is no way for me to know if the incoming Skype call was started on a PC or a phone. As a result I have not used Skype on the phone since. I would like to find out if the information I was given is correct or not.
@voland66 if the person calling you calls your phone number, those calls will count against your allowance. If they call your Skype name, they’ll be free. Hope that clears things up!
I love how Skype yanked apps that would work on my phone, with claims that they are releasing a new, upgraded product, with better quality, but then when they FINALLY do, it is exclusive to Verizon, a company that doesn’t even exist in Canada.
Way to drop the ball Skype. I have waited for you for long enough, and now it appears you have sold out.
I will be looking for a new service. No more money from me.
I’m still at a loss to understand what we in Australia have done to not have Skype for Android? Releasing a Skype client for us wouldn’t hurt the private deal $kype have done to muzzle their US customers. Seriously Skype, whatever you’re earning from crippling your product is not worth it, the damage to your reputation (particularly on the Android market) is just propping up the competition.
Get it together guys, it can’t be that difficult…
Skype,
I have a question. You offer a product that fills a void, and used to do a good job at it. It bridges a gap in communication. I have an internet connection, but no phone line. I have Skype, therefore I now have a phone. Problem solved right?? If I have Skype loaded on my mobile device but can only use it on the 3G connection and not wifi, then Skype suddenly loses it’s utility.
Case: I was in the mountains on a ski trip. There was no cell service at all. My friend, on an iphone, was talking his head off becuase his skype was connected to the hotel’s wifi. This is just one example of a suitable use for skype mobile over wifi. There are many more situations. I was excited when I recently purchased my doid that I could use the skype mobile app when I am in places that do not have cell service. I was let down to find out that, real reasons untold, I could not use this service over wi-fi as my friend had on an iphone.
Your earlier explanation of verizons coverage and battery usage was an insult to my intelligence. Yes, they are a big network…but do you live in a box next to a cell tower and never get out? There is a need for this and your response to this need is contradictory to the service you originally set out to offer.
In my opinion you have compromised your product and without this capability Skype mobile for droid is nothing more that a glorified yahoo messenger. At least be honest and explain why. It is technical? Legislative? Did verizon pay you off? You owe your customer base that or risk losing them. If I am alone is this then so be it. I’ll move to the desert and sell blocks of ice made from acid. Just about as usefull.
Signed….former customer.
Hello!
I have a verizon BB Bold, new just bought. I downloaded skype and I can receive phone calls and I can use the chat. Sometimes but rarely I can make phone calls. Generally when I want to call it says please call and that it does not do anything. I called verizon they made checked and they did not find anything with the account, they also told me to go to the store and get the phone changed. I did it and initially it was working but the day after not any more.
Can you please help me! I really need skype to call!
Thank you so much
P.s My brother has a BB storm1 and he does not have any problem and we both are on the same plan.
Hi Skype,
I just got an Android Incredible, and I’m having a problem with my voice mail system.
If my Skype mobile is on – incoming calls to my Skype-in number do not go to to my Skype mobile, and they also don’t go to voicemail. They just ring indefinitely.
AND – how do I log off of Skype mobile after using it? Do I have to power off my phone every time I use Skype mobile to shut it off so the incoming calls to my skype-in (business) number will go to voicemail?
Thanks,
sgramling
I am using Skype Mobile for Android on a Verizon Wireless Samsung Galaxy Tab. I can chat okay, but trying to do a PC-to-PC call — it bombs out immediately. Note I am trying to do this over WiFi because I purchased my Galaxy Tab for WiFi usage only, not with a voice or 3G calling plan. So, what’s the catch? Is that a feature that requires a voice or 3G plan from Verizon?
So, I have my own Skype number that I use A LOT – it’s become so useful.
Now I need a new cell phone – which I hardly use, because I constantly use Skype
I want to use to be able to access skype with ‘a’ smartphone
I need to understand which phone it will work on this platform so I can make the right choice of phones. Friends in oz have iphone – which is great for the video phones, but they do get dropped with incoming calls or messages making it a pain.
I wasn’t considering the verizon network…
Feedback and advice would be appreciated.

Why isn’t HTC Thunderbolt supported yet? I got the phone just to be able to use Skype and now I have to wait till the end of the year?
