when will we be able to remove the taskbar button in windows 7? i don’t use the “always combine, hide labels” option, and i don’t want to use it just because skype does not support minimize to tray anymore.

  2. stepanpha said 1167 days ago

I please the authors to solve the problem of minimize application to system tray.

  3. nathan.smith771 said 1167 days ago

Yes, it is very annoying that the main window does not minimize to the tray when closed. I have windows 7 & I do not want the skype button to be hogging taskbar space when I am not actually conversing with it… A fix would be appreciated.

Ugh… The not minimising to the system try is a REAL annoyance. Please undo this regression by design.

I now join the large group of those having trouble with Vista and Skype 4.2 …
Skype won’t install on my Desktop with Vista but I was able to, with no problems, install it and use it on my Laptop running Windows XP.
I agree that there should be some warning from Skype for Vista users. Lack of this knowledge caused me to spend many hours trying to fix the problem. In my case, cannot access “Windows Installer – Error 1601″ .

Does this hotfix stop Skype being inefficient bloatware? No? Work on that as a priority before trying to support a webcam standard that isn’t even on the market yet FFS!

  9. robertoturcidestura said 1151 days ago

I’m thinking about using Google Talk, instead of skype UNTIL THEY WON’T FIX THAT MINIMIZE TO TRAY STUFF! it’s veeeery annoying!

  10. marixen said 1151 days ago

So, you make skype stick to the taskbar in win7, but then why still have the icon left in the notification area?
And now if you want us to have it in the taskbar, how about making it actually EXIT when you close it from the menu, since that now does NOTHING.
as previously it minimized to the notification area, now it should actually close the application. But no, one must use the old icon to close it.
Make it so that the user have the option of how to have it displayed, old school style in tray, or the less exciting taskbar way that you obviously havent gotten the hang of. Dont force us to run it in vista compability mode just to get it the way it was, its not an optimal solution, letteng other problems creep up that you havent prepared for due to the compability mode.

    Hey,
I had the same problem with minimizing skype with Windows 7. But I fixed it.

–> Close Skype. Right-klick the skype icon, choose “Properties” then “Compatibility” and then “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and choose “Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)

Now it should work till Skype will fix this problem.

  12. matthewpassell said 1150 days ago

Woo hoo! Three cheers for cooper.da! Changing to Vista compatibility mode worked for me too. :)

follow office outlook option… right click on icon.. “hide when minimized”

microsoft office outlook :P (2007 and 2010).. so dont come with “following microsoft guidelines”

WINDOWS 7 MINIMIZE TO NOTIFICATION AREA (formerly System Tray) FIX:

This is NO FAULT of Skype’s nor its developers; it’s a change in how the Windows 7 Taskbar works.

    1. Google is your friend. Use it before posting aggressive complaints here.
    2. Exit Skype.
    3. Right-click / Properties on the shortcut(s) you use to start Skype.
    4. On the Compatibility tab, click “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and select “Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)”.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Restart Skype.

Note the desired behavior is that actually minimizing Skype’s main window will actually minimize it to the Windows Taskbar. “Closing” Skype by clicking its “X” button will minimize it to the notificaton area, and the Taskbar button will be gone.

You will lose your Jumplist, but that’s the price to pay by telling Windows 7 to treat Skype as if it were running under an earlier version of Windows where Jumplists weren’t implemented.

The above worked for me on Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate. YMMV. Other Taskbar settings I use are: Re-enabled the Quick Launch bar (Google for that, it’s killer great) and set Taskbar buttons to “Never combine” which shows full icon labels. These settings duplicate the look and feel of Windows 95/98/2000/XP/Vista etc. pretty closely.

It crashes on Windows XP SP3 Home Russian during authorization. Skype 4.2.0.155

  16. bensmeets78 said 1145 days ago

Sorry Jeff. Had to reply :) … In my opnion(and lot’s of others) this actually IS 100% a design flaw of Skype’s team. Might be a educated flaw, but still a flaw :) Everything worked great before the latest update, other programs WITH jumplist behaviour AND system tray behavior just work as everyone here expects it to. So to me that points out that it is a specific Skype issue.

Skype accessibility is going from bad to worst! I am sorry to say that, but it is true. In Skype 4.2, contacts, history and conversation are not properly labelled according to it’s listbox hence JAWS and other screen readers were unable to properly identify the number of contacts on Skype. Apart from that, if you have a large contact list, arrows in it can be very slow and cause much CPU usage. I urge the developer to urgently address this issues.

The decision to not minimize Skype to the system tray has marketing written all over it. I’m sure somebody in marketing, with their infinite wisdom, decided it would be a good idea to show the icon as free advertising.Use your voting power – move to another platform. It will show up in marketing’s charts and graphs that useage is down. YES WE CAN!

  19. t.schutz said 1133 days ago

:( I stand corrected. The fix above worked. My appoligies to Skype marketing

“Computer running too slowly..” so advised the call quality result. Did a clean install W7 reinstalled Skype4.2. Tried test call ..hmmmm orange or red status. How come? other apps closed still no joy. About 1month ago no problem

  21. dr_c_rodgers said 1127 days ago

Come on, when are you going to make Skype hide in the system tray again?

(I no longer run Skype when I am not actively making a call. My contacts email me first. The new toolbar button is clunky compared to the old behaviour.)

  22. dimazaur said 1119 days ago

guys run skype in Vista SP2 mode
it will hide skype in tray

  23. igor.im said 1105 days ago

Well, in Windows 7 it’s possible to minimize Skype to notification area when running it in compatibility mode (as suggested above), but…
I’ve used Skype in this mode for few weeks and it consumed high CPU in some calls and caused my PC to freee/hang. When I run it without compatibility mode, it works just fine.

Minimizing Skype to notification area should be implemented in the software by design. Please fix this functional regression and give user the right of choice.

  24. igor.im said 1104 days ago

Actually there is a built-in option to make Skype disappear from taskbar:
    1. In Skype, go to “Tools -> Options”
    2. Click on “Advanced” tab to go to “Advanced” settings
    3. Uncheck the “Keep Skype in the taskbar while I’m signed in” option

  25. ar2r5_ said 1067 days ago

There is no need for hotfixes for Win7 to close taskbar icon.
    What You should do is:
    1)Open Skype main Window.
    2)Open tools/options
    3)Open Advanced settings
4)uncheck this one – “Keep Skype in the taskbar while I’m signed in.

And that’s it! No more Skype in taskbar. Just like good old times :D
Cheers. Hope it’ll help You all desperete skype users in Win7 :D

  26. ylihao said 1045 days ago

Yes that works but the Skype icon will still show up in the taskbar when there’s incoming messages. Is it possible to keep it all in the system tray (notification area)? I prefer checking for new messages periodically and manually instead of having it notify me.

    Skype pops up in my taskbar on VISTA. How do I fix THAT? ;-;

  28. susanappleton said 1023 days ago

For some reason I can’t get a skype button. I have the toolbar in add/remove but not visible on browser toolbar. I am on Vista on my PC and XP on my lap top and it is not working on either of them. I have found comments on here that say it downloads automatically when you download skype, but not for me apparently. Can anyone offer any help. I have tried the ‘Get button’ section in skype but that does not work either.

  29. john.shale1 said 905 days ago

The number of issues being raised makes it difficult for a newbie, such as myself, to find answers to their own problems. I am, therefore, forced to state my own problem and seek specific help. I have Vista (home), logitech webcam (with mic.) and realtek headphones.
When I test, using Skype’s self test, everything works perfectly. When I tried to converse with my son, we could see each other but audio was variable and of poor quality. It may well be a case of tweaking settings but could be a case of security software getting involved. What I need is a checklist routine, when contact has been established, to establish the cause of any problems.
    Definitive answers would be appreciated.
