Skype 1.0 for Symbian

I’m glad to announce Skype 1.0 for Symbian.
We have had many users on the beta release of it giving us good feedback on the product and now we are ready to give it to everyone.
Also some of you have been asking for a version of Skype for Symbian for touch screen handsets (Symbian S60 v5), particularly the Nokia 5800. We are very happy to announce that Skype for Symbian now supports touch screen handsets as well, head over to skype.com/m on your handset to download.

We would like to thank everyone who has given us feedback during the beta testing phase on helping us out to iron out all things what could have been improved. Continue talking about it on our forums or just comment this blog post.

Hello, the release notes refer to v1.0.3 as the latest version for Skype Symbian S60v3 however the download link is for v1.0.2 which does not have the fix for using touch tone codes during a call. Can you please advise where to get the latest version. Thanks

Hi Khalid, you need to download from this page at the link for v3, the it will work for your phone, I guess.

I installed it on my E55 and it is working flawlessly. Why do you say it is not recommended to use it? What adverse effect could it have?

Am I the only person who is having problems with Skype and the 5800? Most of it works fine but you simply can’t send chat messages to anyone.

You start a chat with somebody and you get a yellow input bar with a smiley to the left, and a speech bubble to the right. You can send smileys by clicking on the face, and sending with the speech bubble and you’d think that if you clicked in the yellow area it would open up a keyboard so you could type. But it doesn’t. I do have Dayhand Keyboard installed but this shouldn’t be an issue, it’s worked with 100% of the stuff I have installed in the past, and I have installed some weird and obscure stuff. Even if it didn’t work with Skype there’s still the old Nokia on-screen keyboard there as well to fall back on. So what’s the issue? Is it possible to type an IM or has nobody actually noticed that the only thing you can send are smiley faces?

On a similar note, having received replies to my smiley face texts from people who were rightly confused, the font size is too small to actually read them. I don’t wear glasses and yet I had to squint and put the phone about a foot from my face to make out what the 4 point font actually said – Given the enormous waste of screen-space used by enclosing it in indented pretty boxes there is no need for this, surely it would be better to be able to read the text as opposed to having a pretty looking blur.

Everything else seems good, but since I mostly use Skype for IM type chatting the application is actually utterly useless.

Has anyone else actually tried to use the IM functionality?

    Michael.

Ah ha. The typing issue is with Dayhand – When I disable it it allows me to use the nasty little default Nokia keyboard (I’d forgotten how horrible that was!).

Um, well I’d rather use Fring with Skype than have to squint to read the text and use the Nokia Keyboard and I don’t really see why Dayhand wouldn’t be supported, it’s the only application I have ever known not so so there must be some weird jingo going on here.

ok there is some issue with memory card,

my solution was install skype on phone memory and if still skype stucks with memory card – JUST FORMAT mem.card.

    And thats it!

Probably when people tryes to install on mem card first and then on phone memory – there still some tmp files which skype tryes to take from this mem.card – so thats why You need to format it.

Hope it will help ;) .

Skype is really some nice peace of software. :)

    Hi and4rean,
I had the same problem on my Nokia X6. I overcame with the problem by following steps.
    1. Download Skype & Fring from Nokia OVI store & Install both the softwares
    2. First login to Fring (I used my gmail account)
    3. Once you successfully logged into the Fring then withough logging out from Fring, try to login to Skype.
It worked for my. all the best.
