Better call quality, great value WiFi access and HD-ready – Skype 4.2 for Windows out now

As always, I suspect that many of you will simply want to download the latest version now – but for the more inquisitive among you, read on to find out what’s inside.

Call quality improvements

4.2 includes a brand-new call quality indicator, along with some changes behind the scenes, both of which will mean you should get the best call quality ever.

Great value, hassle-free WiFi access

When you’re on your travels, connecting to WiFi hotspots can be a pain. Fiddling with your credit card, inserting numbers, and so on. Skype Access in 4.2 removes that hassle – simply pay-per-minute for the time you need, and pay with your Skype Credit.

HD-ready

4.2 includes almost everything you’ll need to make HD video calls using Skype. As soon as special HD cameras appear in a couple of months’ time, you’ll be able to call your family and friends in HD.

We’ve also made a number of smaller improvements – fixed bugs, and brought back the call transfer feature. Download it now, and let us know what you think.

This sounds great, just wondering when the Mac version will be updated to have the same features (especially the HD video calling capability)?

That’s great, but without the ability of calling multiple peoples in a video conference, I am moving to ooVoo.

Great… i am really forward to this nice application. My problem is, i am trying to make a “Check for Updates” the message i get is ” You already have the latest version of skype installed. The version is 4.1.0.79. I tryed then to download the latest version 4.2 from the main skype page, and installed it. I still got version 4.1.0.79 and there is no Skype Access feature. Where is version 4.2 ?

Skype on Windows? How about Skype over 3G on my iPhone.

    Still waiting…

I am having the same problem as m.stahl has. Just wasted some bandwidth to download the Skype version I already have! Please update the download link to point to the new 4.2 version!

Sorry me again. Another suggestion, why don’t you name your executables i.e. “SkypeSetup4.2.exe”? Then your users could see what version they download. Just an idea!

    Cheers

This 4.2 version does not work with Windows 7 home. I’ve tried and downloaded it 4 times this weekend. I have repeatedly installed and uninstalled it. The 4.1 worked just fine and now my system gets stuck in a ringing loopback that won’t end even if I end the task in the task manager. A restart is the only way to end this problem. Users on the distant end can’t see that I’m online… so I must not be and I keep getting an error that tells me to run this program in compatability mode with XP(SP3)???
If anyone has I fix… I’d love to hear it. Otherwise, this is a wreck. I cn only assume that getting my money back from skype will be just as difficult if they can’t fix this.

Where disappeared PC speaker ringing feature in 4.2 version?!

I tried the 4.2 on Windows Vista Home and it didn’t work for me either. It’s because when you update from the old version to the new version. It somehow stops working and it won’t even start up when you click on the skype Icon. I am currently running on 4.1 and it seems to be very stable on Windows Vista. They need to work out the updating bugs and the bugs on 4.2 before letting people try it out.

I would have following recommendation. It would be great if you would use scientific study about usability to finally measure and fix the countless usability issues with this version. And it would be great if you’d hiring a designer with great knowledge of interface design.

I’m sure Skype had advance warnings when Windows 7 was coming out and should have been prepared for the problems that would arise from this platform. As I search your site there are nothing but complaints about Skype and Windows 7 having sound problems. Yet your site seems to want to blame all sound problems on our contact’s microphones. My contacts don’t have any problems hearing me from computers with different operating systems. Your program is wonderful when it works and I’ve seen it work well. That’s why I was so disappointed when I got my new computer, with Windows 7 and now I can’t use Skype to video anyone. Please tell us when this issue will be addressed on your site.

Could someone please let me know what happened to the ring through PC speaker option with SKYPE 4.2? Can I find this option somewhere else in the TOOLS or has it been removed????

  14. davidmalouf said 1107 days ago

This update includes two for-pay options that are ON by default. Skype, you should know better than this. VERY unprofessional, very unkind.

If nothing else, inform me before you turn on Skype Access.

And never, NEVER install a button / feature / add-on without asking my permission (Firefox add-on, for example). I had to stop everything I was doing, close down browsers, just to get my system back to where I had it before the Skype upgrade.

Shame on you, Skype. With all that’s in the media these days, these moves are stupid and forcing us to be suspect of what you’re doing. Are you all so unaware as to what is going on these days?!? Even if you are aware, please grow-up and never do this again.

Installed but uninstalled again and went back to version 4.1 as could not remove from the taskbar when GUI closed (Win7-HP). The only way to remove it was to Quit altogether.

    Regards
