Skype for iPhone 1.3 now available
We’ve updated our iPhone app – you can now make video calls.
Skype 1.3 for iPhone is now available in the App Store – download it now (opens in App Store).
We’ve made a number of improvements, including:
- Landscape mode for IM – many of you have been asking for this
- Call quality indicator – new in this version; it’ll help you decide whether it’s the right time to call (a bit like the one in 4.2 beta for Windows)
- Hints and tips – particularly for first time users
We’ve also fixed the problem where calls would sometimes drop after returning from hold, for example when you receive a notification of a text message.
Two things this version doesn’t have in it:
- Calling over 3G – as Russ said a couple of weeks ago, we’re waiting for Apple on this one. As soon as Apple removes its current restrictions on calling over 3G, we’ll make a 3G-capable app available. We’ve got one up our sleeves ready for that moment, but for now, we’re being forced to wait.
- Push notifications – as Russ also said, we’re working on this; we’ll release a version with Push notifications when the experience has been perfected.
Download it now – and don’t forget to let us know what you think ![]()
Any updates for Android version planned?
awesome large text. cheers, nice work
Also you can swap to speaker phone during call connect, nice touch!
It’s good to hear there’s improvements on the iphone skype ^^
Sorry for sounding like one of them people that whine and dont appreciate your job but may you guys add a way to switch the ringtone?
i can’t wait until the next update, i hope that all the problems with push notifications get fixed
Okay, first off I’m tired of this taboo that having criticism regarding a product, regardless of cost, is somehow being ungrateful. I don’t recall Skype Out being free, or that extra $10 to have a phone number being free. I know that my time certainly isn’t free and, if Microsoft, Apple, Google or any real conglomerate is to be the reference, then hundred million dollar advertising campaigns to earn market share aren’t free. Subsequently, market share isn’t free. This means my even typing this to give you my opinion of how asinine and controverted your product is has INTRINSIC, MONETARY value.
Secondly, this app not having Push Notifications is kin to buying a 2009 model Corvette that doesn’t have power windows or locks. Worse, because the fundamental function of a vehicle does not depend on windows or locks. However, the fundamental functions of a messaging and voice communication app REQUIRE notification of said communications. This shouldn’t need explained. Whatever excuse you’ve concocted to justify this immense tardiness is simply that: an excuse. It’s not acceptable.
Landscape mode is very nice feature, thank you!
I’ve noticed some [maybe] bugs in this build comparing to what I had before.
1. On “My Info” tab, there’s no Status description in the clear anymore. Only the icon. The same is for Skype Credit: one has to tap to go to another page to see how much he has got. Why change what already was fine?
2. On Contacts tab, an empty second line appears in place of a “personal message” under the nickname. For example, you can see “Skype test call” with an empty line below (but you remember there previously was something like “Call me to test your sound”)
Could these be regression issues or did you think to change it on purpose?
Thank you
Denis
Thanks for letting us know push notifications are coming. Right now I am DYING for push notifications! Once this app gets push notifications for my incoming calls, I will buy a Skype in number and I will use Skype ALL the time!!!
Skype 1.3.0.207 for iPhone having frequent disconnections (every few minutes) on skype calls.
Did NOT have this issue prior to 1.3.0.207
Any suggestions?
I just gave it a spin and indeed it is much more snappy on my iPhone 3G. I would like it even more, if it would not recognize my “VPN over WiFi” connection as 3G, and therefore let me make call at work.
The sound quality is better, however with release 1.3.0.207, Skype crashed repeatedly after 3 minutes of talk! Hope the next release will fixe this problem.
SMS is failing with this version. There is not way I can send sms now. (although I’m being charged anyway)
REALLY happy that my unanswered calls FINALLY go to voicemail! Problem is, I can’t set the amount of rings before calls go to VM. Caller gets 4 rings, standard affair. Problem is my iPhone doesn’t start ringing right away. Maybe 6 or 7 rings for the caller seems like a lot, but I’d rather have a better shot at actually answering the call.
wait, calls roll to voicemail now for the iphone app?!?!? i will start my skypein subscription then.
you guys should add bluetooth headset support.
About the updated app for iPhone: the 1.3xx one.
Except for the better sound, I do not see where it got any better than the previous version, in fact it got worse – my iPhone does not go on sleep mode when I am connected to Skype! Yes, and it crashes frequently.
On a betterment note: different ringtones, or access to iPhone ringtones would be awesome.
Just downloaded 1.3 on my iphone and cannot sms now. You are still taking the money each time I try thiuogh. Please can you sort it out asap and also refund the money I have spent with you. if you advertise a service, charge for the service and then do not deliver the service you are contravening the trades description act. Please refund my money asap

Well.. no bluetooth headset support? Waiting, waiting!
@nandstaylor – sorry to hear you’re having problems sending SMSs. Give our support team a shout and they’ll be able to help.
I start having problem with sending sms from iphone since last week, I just tried again this morning and it’s still not working. (both on iphone and mac).
I haven’t been using Skype on my new iPHone for long but it definitely needs the ability to handle an incoming call QUICKLY.
Also, it needs to integrate with the existing phone book. I can dial phone numbers outbound and I don’t want to duplicate all of my contacts.
You need to get Canadian numbers for SkypeIn (although this may not be a Skype issue)
A fantastic app, ALMOST there.
Apple has officially endorsed VoIP 3G on the iPhone ( http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/apple-lifts-3g-voip-restrictions-icall-with-3g-support-available-immediately-82842957.html )
iCall already allows it–
When can we expect Skype 3G?
I am, well, I guess a whole bunch of other iPhone users too, waiting for this feature (VoIP over 3G) to be enabled.
Can you guys send a BIG announcement, or even an e-mail to your Skype subscribers (those who use iPhones if you can manage to figure it out) when this is enabled?
Thx!
Great news that Skype on an iPhone will shortly be available using 3G. Any idea on a date.
As importantly, what’s up with the lack of bluetooth support. Other iphone aps will work using perfectly well using bt including the mic. I’m sure Apple held this back originally but the cats out of the bag now. When can we expect to see it?
First thing is first with this new app, fix the drop calls situation before any further enhancements are made.
Apple removed the VOIP over 3G limitation in the current SDK, now there is no reason to withold a new Skype version for 3G calls anymore!!
Skype, surprise us with a fast update, as you said you would once the restriction is removed:)
Are you going to add bluetooth support??
Allow me to echo the Bluetooth question. Bluetooth support for applications was introduced in OS 3.0 in JUNE of 2009! That’s over six months ago! Is it any sort of priority? Push and 3G are great improvements, but lack of BT support means that I can’t really use Skype even on WiFi!
Are the mobile phone versions as secure as the PC/Mac versions? How does its security compare to the computer versions on voice, video or IMs?
@ckareca2010 we’ve just published a detailed security FAQ which should answer those questions – let me know if you have any more.
thank you for your reply, yes I saw that FAQ, but it does not answer my question. I just got a Nokia N900 and I noticed that I don’t even open Skype on my PC anymore, no more need for it. I understand that one can have several types of calls, skype-out to a phone, phone to skype-in, etc.. and that security changes depending on several issues. But considering a skype to skype call would you say that security on Skype for iPhone/N900 is the same as for PC/MAC? thanks… I am not saying Fring or other Skype interface, just regular Skype.
I just noticed that as of last week, Apple has lifted its restrictions on using VOIP applications over the 3G network on the iPhone. In fact, if I use Fring, I can access my Skype account and call out that way. However, Skype is really the only calling app I want to use on the iPhone so having to use Fring is a bit of a a pain. Any word on when the Skype app allowing 3G calling on the iPhone will be released? Soon I would hope, especially as this post says it’s “waiting in the wings.” Congrats on the current iPhone app anyway — a total winner!
I recieved the following message on my skype through Registry Online: Your system IS affected, download the patch from the address below !
Failure to do so may result in severe computer malfunction.

For the link to become active, please click on ‘Add to contacts’ skype button or type it in manually into your web browser!
Is this real or not? I am not comfortable with adding anything unknown to my contact list.
Please advise.
I suppose that already you will know it, but Apple has raised the restriction of VoIP through 3G. For when the update?
Skype is crap.
It just keeps freezing and is not as cheap as they claim.
Sort out the connection issues rather than pat yourself on the back.
This last version have some problems!
1) Keyboard crash when using in Landscape mode and after that back to normal mode…
2) Sometimes lost a lower line of buttons (Contacts, Calls and etc.)
Where i can find and download previous version? Cause that version haven’t the same problems….. And i cat work with this version….
i believe that it is not so hard to make skype on the iphone supporting bluetooth headsets. can skype team give us any official announcement for that and when are they going to make a bluetooth headsets support
I’m really looking forward to an update that will enable Bluetooth Headset support. Its needed!
I’m really looking forward to an update that will enable Bluetooth Headset support. This is the only priority for me – this is more important than push and calling over 3G.
C’mon, folks, we really need Bluetooth support. Toktumi does it, and I’m using Line2 for VOIP calls until Skype catches up.
Hellow Skype Team.
I have to agree with another other Skype users and ask: Where is the Bluetooth Headset support??
Without Bluetooth support Skype on the iPhone is useless to me.
PS The lack of an answer around here re: bluetooth is disrespectful and unprofessional. You have people who come to this blog because they are supporters and users of this product … meaning they want to give you their business. If this was a car show room and the customers were ignored like that, I’m sure they would take their business elsewhere. Most companies biggest challenge is attracting customers … here you have customers hanging around, begging for a response from you … it’s pathetic. You obviously take it for granted. Actually, the more I write the more pissed off I’m getting lol.
I never heard of Line2 till gecampbell mentioned it (thanks) but I checked it out and it looks pretty cool. I think I have to start exploring my options.
QFE
….bluetooth
Not sure if you programmers are listening, but I’ll say it again
Bluetooth.
Most people now a days HAVE to use headsets cause they’re busy doing other things while on calls. Not having bluetooth headset support for Skype on iPhone makes Skype on iPhone a useless app.
Might as well make a regular phone calls and have the bluetooth support.
iPhone + Skype + Bluetooth = win
I am just reiterating all comments above about Bluetooth support on iPhone. I am just finding out that it doesn’t work as I just unboxed my iPhone 4 last night. This is amazing…it makes Skype almost useless for me on this phone.
Can someone from Skype development or support at least post that have read the posts to this affect on this board and give us an idea if this is something that we will see ini the lifetime of our phones? Thx!
+1 for Bluetooth. I just bought a Sennheiser MM400 headset to use with my iPad + Skype only to find out that Bluetooth isn’t supported on the Skype app ((
Please give us Blutooth support ASAP. I can’t wait to get Google Voice, you people are really getting annoying.
bluetooth please. i am waiting for google voice as well.
Bluetooth is an essential requirement for Skype, especially with the advent of Skype over 3G !
When will the bugs in Skype over 3G be addressed ? There is a constant, annoying drop in Skype calls even when my network’s signal strength is good …. why ? More often than not I have to end up switching to Skype-to-go in order to complete my calls ….. at which time the person at the other end will always say how much clearer I sound during our now interruption free call. I am paying my network provider to use the Skype-to-go number, I think, so its costing me to use a service I am already paying Skype for.
Can someone from Skype respond to this ?
When I first got my Bluetooth headset skype used to work with it with my iphone and ipad. Not sure what version it was but now it doesn’t work. Still waiting like everybody else for skype to add back that functionality. It has been months ……
To all of you asking for Bluetooth headset support – unfortunately, the way iOS works doesn’t allow us to support Bluetooth headsets with sufficiently high audio quality.
Hi Peter – What specifically is the problem with the way iOS works that prevents Bluetooth being used? Are you able to provide more detail than in your answer to dsam2000?
Looking for bluetooth supporting…. It will be useless without bluetooth.
@Peter Parkes: Acrobits Softphone and a handful other apps on iPhone are capable of using Bluetooth headset perfectly fine with superb voice quality. Are you saying you guys can not do the same thing?!
