Skype for Symbian beta release

We’re pleased to announce that we are ready to release a limited beta of our upcoming Symbian phones client, Skype for Symbian.

This beta release of Skype for Symbian supports more than ten different handsets, with the production release planned to be compatible with even more phones.

Skype for Symbian supports:
* Free Skype-to-Skype calling
* Call phones with Skype credits or subscription
* Receive calls on your Online Number
* Instant Messaging
* Group conversations
* File sending and receiving

Skype for Symbian works over Wifi or 3G data connection. We recommend having a unlimited data plan when using 3G connection.

We would like to get all your feedback on this beta release. Did you like it? Did we miss anything? Did you have any trouble using it? Did you have any technical issues?

Let us know about it on our forums.

Please remember that it is a beta release, which means that the quality is not up to our usual high standards. If you experience any bumps during the usage of the client then please let us know.

Hi, What a lot of pointless info here…

I got the Skype ‘Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 devices’ and installed it on a nokia E75, and it is really satisfying me.

Being a beta, I can say it’s already a neat version to me.

I succesfully sign in, contacts show up quite fast. There is a time lag signing out, and signing in (for other contacts seeing my online presence)

Calls are fine, over G3, application is responsive, and promessing.

The setting to have a pre-defined internet connection doesn’t stick, so it asks a connection type at startup.
Incoming calls don’t give a ringtone, even though the application comes to the front after being hidden.

I have set up a shortcut in the home screen, maybe it would be nice if the icon could update (missed calls, online status,…)

Great work! Is there any feed one can subscribe to for futher development updates?

Thanks !!! Raul, “Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 devices” really work with my Nokia 5800.

I tried to install Skype on Omnia i8910 HD, but does not like the certificate.
I know that an official version does not yet exist, many people owning a phone with Symbian 5 are in great expectation.
    Sincerely Italy
    Cristiano

Can someone pleaase advise when the Nokia N97 will be added to the list for downloads for Symbian users. I would like to have skype available on my phone and have been waiting patiently for the last 6 months and have been reading all the blogs advising that it will be released soon in sept and then at the end of 2009 which has not been the case. thanks for any info. Martin

Well I installed it on Nokia 5800XM and it works.Only when I write instant message I had to press Options and then choose Send (little anoying).Skype to Skype call works good too.
Still waiting for full support for S60v5.

  13. andreas-farrenkopf said 1226 days ago

I also have an Nokia N97 with Symbian S60 5th Edition.

  14. oliverwright said 1225 days ago

I have been tesing it on my E71. It worked OK for a few days but now tells me I can’t make skypeout calls because my credit has expired (it is only a few months old).

My PC version of skype still lets me make skypeout calls.

  15. oliverwright said 1225 days ago

I find it hard to find the settings. Once you are in contacts etc, you have to go back to the main page to change the settings (for example the default connection).

Also it would be good to be able to set a first and 2nd choice connection (use wifi where available, then choose 3G).

  16. dominikbrzeski said 1225 days ago

I have N97mini and N5800xm. Why is there no support for these models even there are already so long on the market. Skype programists – WAKE UP!!! And remember – We skype users are using skype because we like innovations (as skype is) :-) but innovations mean that we also like new gadgets – new phones… Programist, You are staying behing…

It basically works for me on Nokia 6730c (S60 3rd FP2).

Text chat works well (as in the Skype Lite edition) including notifications on the Nokia home screen.

Regarding VoIP I have experienced two problems:
    1.
The microphone worked well but I could not hear the other side (i.e. it worked only one-way). Actually it seems like all the audio output of the phone stopped when I tried this. The phone stopped ringing for (normal) incoming calls. This problem happened when Skype was still running _after_ the VoIP test. When I exited Skype the problem disappeared and the next time I started Skype (but did not perform any VoIP operation) the problem did not happen. So it seems like VoIP operations disable all the audio output of the device (including for Skype itself).
    2.
Another problem that I have experienced is high latency (3-5 seconds)
Perhaps it is because there was no 3G coverage where I tried it so it actually used the GPRS link. The GPRS bandwidth (57 Kbps?) is supposed to be enough for VoIP, but since those 2.5G networks were not designed for this kind of realtime traffic the latency is probably much higher. I would have to try it again when I would be in 3G covered area.

Is Nokia E72 supported? From the comments above, it looks like it isn’t.

I really hope Skype will be supported on Nokia E72 soon! Please!

I installed Skype Beta v 0.9.0.0 on my Nokia
It works excellent except that hung up on sign off.

  29. timofei_popkov said 1221 days ago

Please add support for Nokia N97.

  30. timofei_popkov said 1221 days ago

How about video calls on N900 and N97? Will it be ever supported?

  31. romcha75 said 1220 days ago

Nokia E52: can’t install – “free more memory” message. 20MB memory free on phhone and 200MB free memory on card.

  32. pilotini said 1220 days ago

I have a Noka E63, and my Skype account has U$10 and I also have a subscription plan, but on my E63 the balance appears as Inactive, and I’m able to make any call, but my account has credit and this calling plan. If I remove the software, the first time execution appears with the right credit, but from second execution, always appears my credit as Inactive.
Canyou please kindly check this bug.

    Thanks!

  33. marcel.ehrhard said 1220 days ago

I like Skype and also my Nokia E52. Software levels OK and installation of Symbian Beta like a charm. Everything looks great, except that I can only chat and send SMS from my mobile Skype. Any hope that the Nokia E52 will get full Skype Symbian support?

  34. ciggiau said 1220 days ago

    Nokia E71

    - calling: u dont hear the oter side ringing till they pick up, so it might be ringing, busy…etc. and u dont really know whats going on.

    - receiving calls: it doesnt ring, but just display a receiving a skype call.

good job skype team, it’s a good first step i hope little by little will have all these things fixed.

  35. ciggiau said 1220 days ago

    Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone knows if would be any possibility to have it ringing when you receive a call?

    Thanks.

  36. beatus78 said 1219 days ago

Thanks, Skype, for finally doing something for Symbian. So far we’ve only had a well-hidden Skype Lite which was crippled as it couldn’t do any VoIP, just text chat.

Like jerzyguzenda, I have a Samsung G810. This phone is comparable to the Nokia N95 with its ARM11 processor @ 330 MHz, so it should be doable.

Btw, the latest Fring release almost gets there: The other party can hear me, but my voice is lost.

Let’s see who will be faster… Fring or Skype!

  37. ryanmchutchon said 1219 days ago

On the E72 it installs fine, has a very slick U/I, but when I place a call, there is no audio. Would be great if this could be fixed. Now using fring instead, but would prefer to use Skype if fully functional.

It works very well in a E90 – using it right now as a Wifi phone for Skypein/out; I’m waiting for the N97 version though!

    Cheers.

    Hello,

Does anybody know when ‘Skype Lite’ will be available for NOKIA E55?

    Thank you.

  44. daniel_katzer said 1213 days ago

I tried it on my Nokia e71, it is working fine except for skype calls.

if i try to call it says i first need to put balance into my account. but i have subscription…

anyone here experienced the same issue? how did you solve this.

can i reinstall just like using a pc? should i update my mobile before reinstalling?

I would be more than happy for any advice.

    Cheeeeeers,

  46. cinor_ said 1212 days ago

Installed FP2 on my 5800XM – phone crashes when I try to log in. A shame that s60v5 is not being supported.

  47. millbrae-skype said 1212 days ago

I used this on a Nokia E63 while travling in Thailand. I logged about five hours of use in hour long conference calls without a glitch! It was fantastic! Only thing I noted were:

    1. THe ringing sound is through the external speaker at first then it routes through the ear piece
    2. When you have a voice mail the pop up VM indicator won’t go away unless you listen to it. A little annoying but nothing major

I added contacts, edited contacts etc. It was flawless.
Oh, all calls were via WiFi.

Thank you to the coders on this!!!
    Mark

It works amazingly well on my E90, both on WiFi and 3G, and no delay at all. At last I can get rid of Fring.

when will you guys support N97/S60 Ver5?
