Pc Tools the company producing ThreatFire security software has fixed this issue with their threats database update on 11th December.

We have tested this fix and confirmed that it solves the problem.

Everyone running ThreatFire security software should update their installion.

We are very sorry for the trouble caused to our users.

Original message:

On last few days we see higher amount of crash issues reported to us by our users.

We have identified them to be caused by security software ThreatFire 4.7.0.11 which is causing Skype to crash.

We recommend for everyone who has ThreatFire installed and are experiencing crashing issues to un-install it until the vendor of this software provides solution for the problem.

ThreatFire has acknowledged this issue on their forums.

If you have this software installed and you are affected by the issue then Skype crashes few seconds after trying to send Instant Message or make a call. Crash will happen also when Skype is on idle and sometimes also on the program start-up.

Skype versions 3.8, 4.0 and 4.1 are confirmed to be affected by it.

On Windows Vista and 7 you will get Windows crash dialogue and possibility to report this issue to Microsoft. We recommend you to do it.

On Windows XP Skype will “exit” without any visible messaging about issues.

The crash will appear on Windows Event Viewer or crash dialogue with following attributes:

Application Name Skype.exe
Application Version 4.1.0.179 (your Skype version)
Module Name kernel32.dll
Module Version 6.0.6002.18005 (depending on your Windows version)
Offset 0x48c37

We have contacted PcTools, the vendor of ThreatFire, about this issue.
We will work with them to make sure this issue gets fixed as fast as possible.

We are sorry for the inconvenience caused to you.

I uninstalled ThreatFire completely, using the Control Panel Uninstall Programs program. After rebooting the (new ASAS Windows 7 Home Premium) laptop, Skype continues to do the same thing…that is, it crashes a few seconds after connecting an outgoing OR incoming phone call, and also when trying to send a text message to another person on my contact list. Latest version of Skype installed. Horrible job of Windows 7 64-bit compatability job, Skype engineers. Why can’t you get it together and release a version that works with the new Windows? Come on!!!

Actually managed to resolve this now. Its contention with MS Office 2007 installation. Go in to control panel add and remove programmes. Choose to change Microsoft Office 2007 and then disable the Groove option.

Fixed! – Skype Tech support informed.

I installed ThreatFire version 4.7.0.17 and it was causing Skype to crash. However I then updated my Skype version from version 5.0.0.152 to 5.0.0.156 and Skype is now stable with ThreatFire running. I am not sure if the problem was resolved by reinstalling Skype or the new version. I am using the Windows Vista OS.
