Video demo: Skype for Nokia N900

The Nokia N900 has Skype built-in – it’s totally integrated into the phone’s Maemo operating system, with no extra downloads required. You can make free Skype-to-Skype calls and IM on 3G or WiFi, and call phones abroad at great, low rates.

Mark Douglas, our product manager for the N900 here at Skype, reveals all in the video above. To get your hands on one today, head over to the Skype store. Update: seems to be pre-order only in the UK at least – sorry to keep you waiting!

    Video does not load.

  2. meteormatt said 1302 days ago

    Very good.

  3. tomchiv said 1301 days ago

Looks good, but it’s misleading to claim “get your hands on one today” as the site you link to ends up at http://shop.nokia.co.uk/nokia-uk/product.aspx?sku=10208380 which says “Availability: Pre-order Now” despite Nokia’s comments to the contrary.

  4. pepitoe2 said 1301 days ago

Now you just need to add video calling!

  5. peterparkes said 1301 days ago

@tomchiv that’s a very good point. I’ve updated the post above – thanks for spotting!

    Hi, nice video!
What about the video-calling? Will a Skype software will also be released to add this function? Or an update of the whole system?

  7. fredrikwe said 1301 days ago

Looks fine, but when will we get a full Skype client on Android, whose phones are already out there in big numbers. Right now the only decent client is fring – shame on Skype!

  8. dstanko said 1301 days ago

So where is video calling???!? If I remember on N800 and N810 (apparently) the processor was too slow. That’s not an issue any more. So where’s the video?

  9. slate8 said 1286 days ago

+1 for video calling. The N900 even has a front facing camera which would make it perfect for this application.

Working well for voice so far though

I am not sure what kind of activity is going on as far as including video call capability for Nokia N900 is concerned, are you the gurus doing something or are we waiting for nothing? Please let us know. I promise I will not bug you after you respond to this.

Skype works amazing on the n900. It is as free as any other comupter. The n900 does have a front facing camera, so WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET VIDEO CALLING?

  17. bos.tarun said 1234 days ago

I wonder if there are any plans on supporting video calls in the future. Given the front facing camera video calls shouldn’t be that hard to support.

i just purchased my n900. i doesnt have skype installed and when i try to download it here, it doesn’t recognize the model. every other nokia is listed. what to do? where did you guys get it from

  19. eladts said 1221 days ago

@lanlord55: Skype is embedded in the Nokia N900, you do not need to download anything. Unlike other devices, Skype is not a seperate application but is integrated into the Phone, Conversations, and Contacts applications. All you need to do is add your Skype account to the VOIP accounts settings.

This looks like the perfect app. !

But, in my case with both SkypeIn and Skype Out,
will the phone make my SkypeIn number available,
    when I enter a WiFi-zone ?

I mean, can people call my SkypeIn number and
the N900 will automatically ring if I’m in a Wifi-
    zone ?

So is this available on ALL N900′s? i get mine tomorrow on O2 in the UK… or it exclusive to buying from Skype shop????

Second the Video calling development need. And we should be starting petitions to stop the cell operators blocking skype calls on the 3g networks. Dont they realise we just wait until we get to a wifi hotspot or computer and call with skype anyway???? I never exceed my 1600 inclusive minutes an month and never make international calls on their expensive rates….. but i spend hours to my other half in the US from UK…..

Where’s the video calling? It would be thrilling to have front webcam support. Please help us!

  23. amiraseri said 1156 days ago

Mark/Skype, its been few months now since Skype build into the great N900. I seriuosly think its about time to move to the next level, video call. Comon, don’t tell me that the support team are busy building for iPad only. We all love Skype, please and please make this happen. Fring did it, i expect more from you guys.

  24. jolyanchandler said 1147 days ago

I’d just like to the call for video. From what I can see, there hasn’t been an official response for months. Unless software developers add support for the n900 ,we’re left with a very expensive average phone. It is capable of so much more. Please comment on whether or not we’re getting skype video call support or not. Go on, it’ll only take you a minute and stop a lot of people wondering. Don’t make me beg. Thanks in advance of a swift reply

  25. bdangol said 1144 days ago

Here here when will we get video support?

  26. drgrahamwilson said 1142 days ago

So how do I receive Skype calls on my N900?

  27. jolyanchandler said 1142 days ago

Settings, voIP and IM accounts, enter you account details and your contacts will appear in the phone contacts when you’re logged in.

How about and update on video mr Skype man (or woman)

  28. jolyanchandler said 1141 days ago

Just read that the n900 has been released in hong kong with the latest maemo update and has video for skype. Don’t know when the rest of us will get it though.

  29. patreek97 said 1141 days ago

Hey everybody. We’re actually on the wrong blog.Skype has nothing to do with this! The N900 will need a FIRMWARE UPDATE from Nokia to be able to use front facing camera(will work with skype). They told me anytime within next 2 or 3 months.ASAP!Working on it now, could be any day.Not happy Nokia and all experts NEVER mentioned itbefore we bought it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. the-pupil13 said 1140 days ago

With the new BETA PR1.2 firmware the skype videocalling is enabled. Meaning with this firmware it’s good to go. But remember, this firmware isn’t the official one from Nokia but a leaked one from China. Use it at your own risk. http://www.maemo.org for more info.

Dear All ! One small problem with Skype. Where I live Skype is blocked by the local authority. Is there a small software to make it work on my N900 ? Something similar to Hotspot Shield, which does not exist for n900.

I am really desperate ! Please, send me the link to: amansour_99@yahoo.com

    Thank you in advance.

Video for Skype works like charm, BUT not to Linux versions, just to windows and higher than version 4 …

AND there is still the massive sign in bug, if i change from wifi to 3G or vice versa i cant sign in until Skype any more. The only solution is to delete the Skype account and add it again, and like me, merge all my 200 contact into my phone contacts, very annoying!!

And no way to report it to Skype or Nokia, just maemo has an public bug tracker …

If anyone got more infos about that bug or a better work around please send me a notice: xuedi@beijingcode.org

    Hi there,

I used to own Nokia 5800 (which is symbian based) and my opertor is 3 Australia. I had bought one of their internet packs and as part of the deal I was allowed to make unlimited skyoe to skype for free without counting towards my alloted internet data allocation. Since I have moved to n900 such a facility is not available anymore, everytime there is a skype call it consumes my data allocation.

Not sure what technology is used on Symbian, everytime I (used to )connect to a contact on skype it would dial out a number (+6143000…..) and voice would appear “connecting you now” and then I will be connected to my contact.

Does anyone know if something similar to above can be done on n900, i.e. when I want to contact someone it dials out a number rather than the using my broadband allocation?

how can we chat on skype with n900. i tried going to contacts but it gives only one option – call with skype. can anyone suggest.

  37. dndunham said 803 days ago

Now, is there a way to make the integrated app to give “skype on 3″ functionality? That is one beef I now have with both 3 and the N900. I bought it because I was told it would be compatible, but then when I started using Skype, found my data minutes were being eaten (free skype for life, yeah, right….)
