Skype and Windows 7

Many of you have asked about Skype and Windows 7 – and I’m happy to announce that Skype 4.1 is certified as being compatible with Windows 7.
If you don’t already have the latest version, you should download it now – it now includes screen sharing as well as improved audio and video quality.
In a future version of Skype for Windows we plan to introduce features which integrate with the improved taskbar and jumplist functions within Windows 7.
I have the same problem, my acer aspire 5536 with windows 7- 64 bits not only Skype won’t start, also brings down the internet connection, so the only way to connect to the web again is to reboot the wifi internet link connection or restart the computer. Any new driver that I don’t know about can fix this problem? Any answer SKYPE???
Running Skype on windows 7 64 bit and whenever i try to receive a call nothing happens when i click answer. If i close the windows that is requesting mt response to the call i hear the incoming ring continuously until I force skype to shutdown or restart the computer. Outgoing calls have the same problem. Cannot complete connection and rings continuously until i force skype to shutdown. Please help I use skype for conducting business.
copied from a much earlier post, i am having same issues. very frustrating.
“I upgraded my Windows Vista to Windows 7 and Skype isn’t working. It works for a few minutes and then it stops. It almost “freezes” saying that it’s processing my message, but it never does and then I can’t get back on Skype once I sign out. Skype comes up but will not connect to caller. When I call it rings but will not respond to caller. Just keeps ringing. I have to go to task manager to force skype to close and stop ringing.”
it also affects my dvd/cd drive and my computer’s ability to recognize the disc and play it…. sometimes it will play but gets about 8 seconds of choppiness into the previews before it totally freezes and i have to hard shut down the player to correct itself.
it also makes my firefox v5.0 freeze and crash as well and then it can’t recover – doesn’t allow me to get past pop-up windows to report the crash whether i want to restore tabs or start anew – it just keeps throwing me the same window.
i’ve uninstalled and reinstalled Skype about 4 times thinking it was something with windows 7 but as soon as it’s off my computer everything else goes back to working properly.
what is going on?! where is the fix?!
“APPCRASH” ?
Skype crashed immediately after launching the program.
I asked myself why just now? Since it worked before…
I then remembered that I had installed a new Bluetooth USB dongle to make the system communicate with my new Nokia Bluetooth headset. It is strange that Skype did not crash just after I installed the bluetooth USB dongle but the week after…
I even used the Bluetooth telephone headset to make a Skype call and it worked great.
Anyway, I just wanted to try to do “something” so unplugged the Bluetooth USB dongle and restarted Skype. Voila, Skype runs as nice as it used to!
Next step…
I just had to try the Bluetooth again. I have 3 different Bluetooth USB dongles and I connected the X-Micro XBT DG2G. (The one I used when it worked OK).
Skype started perfectly and even found the Bluetooth equipment and suggested to use it. Very good!
The reason for your problem with Skype can be different than mine but try to unplug something that might cause Skype to crash.
Especially caused by communication devices.
Just wanted to share my experience that solved my problem with Skype and hopefully will this help you or somebody out there

I am also having the same sound problem. I have Sony Vaio VGN series with windows 7 64-bit using Skype 4.2. When I receive a notification in Skype Chat with headphones on, all sound gets redirected to my system’s on board speakers, including the Skype notification noise, regardless of my headphones. This is really annoying for some cases. One of my Friends Dell has also experiencing the same problem.
I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 1545 with Windows Home Premium 64-bit, and I’m having exactly the same problems as many other people with latest version of Skype, eg:

Windows 7 running on a Dell Inspiron. Calls can be initiated but cannot be answered. Caller sees connection drop but windows 7 and skype 4.x continues to ring. Only way out is to kill skype with task manager or reboot. Skype sometimes works after reboot, other times not. Solution?

I’m having same issues as the other users and Windows 7. Skype will work for a few mins and then stop. Only task manager will close out the program. Also, skype will say that I’m signed it and will not even let me log on, even though I’m not connected. Solutions?!
I upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7. Skype had been working ok but now i realize that i can’t hear any alert sounds, i can’t hear anything when I call out and the other person can’t hear me but i can hear and see them fine. I have a webcame/microphone built into my laptop and have tried everything to get this to work. Both my cam and mic work in windows messenger chat but not on skype. When I go into my sound options in the tools section on skype and select play this sound i get a sound playback error stating that playback was not supported. I have the latest version of skype(4.2.0.163) so i’m not sure what is happening. Someone please help.
I downloades Skype yesterday onto a new computer with Windows 7. I call my husband’s skype every day and it tranfers to his phone when he is at work. This has worked well always, but now, with the new Skype on Windows 7, the call gets interrupted immediately after my husband answers and the systems says that Skype stopped working but it cannot find the problem. Is this because of some incompatibility with Windows 7? Please help…. I am on the other side of the world from my husband and Skype is the best way for us to stay connected!!
Well I’ve just installed Skype Version 5.0.0.105, and I still can’t sign in. I’ve still got the same problem I reported on 20th March ie
“I have a Dell Studio XPS with W7 Professional 64 bit. I can sign here on this blog, I can sign in on my Dell in XP mode, but when I try and sign in in W7 mode I get an error message saying “your Skype Name and password were not recognized. Please check and try again”. I tried to work around this issue by creating a new Skype Account with a new Skype Name (using valid characters only), but I always get an error message saying it contained invalid characters
Why can’t I sign in using Windows 7? Is the issue linked to the invalid character issue? I’ve tried a clean reinstall using Revo to uninstall everything (incl 60 registry keys) but no joy.”
Am I the only person with this problem? Skype suppport couldn’t provide an answer, even though I sent them a log file.
I couldn’t get Skype to close out using Win 7; went to tools/advanced options and cleared option for keeping signed in and that solved the problem.
I can’t vouch for Windows 7, but Skype 4.2.0.169 is NOT compatible with Vista. During skypeout phone calls I’m getting an access violation read of address skype.exe error that other posters have complained about. When this occurs Skype goes gray and appears to crash but the phone calls are still connected. Audio quality has not improved, calls are choppy and with lots of echo and about the same number of dropped calls as before. Still waiting for newer versions for my Linux box. Linux is still on version 2 beta but it’s much more stable.
Additionally, Skype 4 frequently crashes explorer when trying to load at Vista boot up. I have to wait 5 or 10 minutes after turning on my laptop and then start Skype manually.
I have to join the group of people having problems with Skype 4.2 on Win 7 64bit.
I have Dell Studio 1747 with Win 7 Home Premium 64. Skype starts OK and then after few minutes stops working. Messages can’t be sent (it can be closed normally however) and if it’s left running for few more minutes it freezes completely and has to be terminated using task manager. What’s worse, it messes up sounds. After Skype is closed or terminated I can’t use any app that uses sound (eg. Winamp) otherwise the app freezes too. Even the sound settings in control panel. System sounds don’t work either. The only cure is to reboot and then not starting Skype.
I’m running an alienware Win 7 64bit, same problem as jbritko describes, messages fail to go through the UI just stops responding to anything, and I have to reboot all the time just to use skype for a little while.
I also tried the beta version, same problems. I sure wish skype was more responsive to user problems, they’ve always hid behind a wall of “we don’t want to see, hear from, or know our users”
Maybe it is time to make the leap, give up the skype number and get on to google.
skype and windows 7 64bit don’t work…it get connection errors, and the same exact setup works on my 3sbit laptop with trillian, but not on my 64 bit system…
skype will be up and running, and i’ll send a message, and i’ll get that circular hour glass, and it won’t send
oh yeah, and i’ll quit skype from the task bar, but it won’t close out in windows task manager, and to reload skype, i need to go into the task manager to close out skype
I have downloaded skype 4.2 latest version and I have windows 7 on my desktop computer. My skype calls drop very often. I unistalled and installed it again but no improvement. Skype is working fine in my laptop which has windowsxp. Any suggestion or comment? thank you
Skype ( 4.2.0.169) on Windows 7 has problem with sound if Logitech Webcam (perhaps other external sound devices as well) has been already plugged before Skype starts. This cannot be corrected without restarting the system. The system doesn’t play anymore before the system is restarted. Please help.
Windows 7 64 bit, AMD Turon, Conexant AC-link Audio.
I love Skype and have used all over the world since the beginning. It boggles my mind how you Skype folks could take such a great product and make it so small so unfriendly. Now comes Windows 7 and we can’t even use the great 3.8 and prior.
For heavens sake don’t you know when you have a good thing.
WE DO!
PLEASE FIX IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I make a comment THE FIRST time ever and now you say I have made too many comments.
Skype 4.2 also here not working in Windows 7 (64 bit). Starts and shows the icon in the taskbar, but refuses to open a window, also refuses to close (I have to stop the process) and it does not accept incoming messages. It worked however in the passed, so I suppose some incompatibility with another program or with a Windows update. I can open Skype without problem from virtual XP within Windows 7 and from another PC with Vista using the same connection.
EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS JBRITKO
STILL YET TO FIND A SOLUTION
IVE GOT A DELL ADAMO RUNNING WIN 7 64 BIT
“After Skype is closed or terminated I can’t use any app that uses sound (eg. itunes) otherwise the app freezes too. Even the sound settings in control panel. System sounds don’t work either. The only cure is to reboot and then not starting Skype.”
Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit, Clone Desktop, Intel Core2Duo 2.53ghz, 4gb RAM, Realtek High Def Audio, Skype ver 4.2.0.169.
Skype will work for about the first 2 to 3minutes and then goes away completely.
Sometimes restarting Skype works or will have to do a FULL Reboot of the system.
It works just fine on my WinXPpro system. I’m so Fed up with this if Skype doesn’t do something soon to fix this im going to JUNK it.
I should have said its the Mic Audio that goes away! and not the whole program. I can still receive. Even changed out the Headset w/ Boom Mic.
I have a Dell Studio / Windows 7 / Skype 4.2.0.169
Skype can not connect to the integrated webcam, while I do not have the same problem with Yahoo Messenger
Please help!
How do I get the icon on the taskbar to be SMALLER? I don’t want the wide Skype tab even when I’ve closed Skype. Windows 7 SUCKS! *sorry for the childishness but I’m so frustrated!I can’t find where on skype to ask it to delete from the taskbar. I will uninstall I guess. I hoped someone would have answered erab81 by now!
21 October 2010. Skype 5.xxxx, and windows 7. Problem, sound from mic starts bad and fades away after a few minutes. Is there a cure?
I just installed Skype 5.0.0.152 and have noticed that in windows 7 sound mixer that there are two entries for skype. Whats up with that? Also when placing the test call, although my set up indicated that my recording was fine, (green bar about halfway full on voice) I could barely hear the recording it made when played back. Is this common place?
karoldouglas: Dont delete it, open the options from the tools menu, then open the advanced section at the bottom, and uncheck keep Skype in the taskbar, while I’m loged in. Then when you close the main window with the red X, it closes to the system tray in windows 7. Still running but no longer on the taskbar. To open it again, hover the system tray arrow, and then double click the Skype Green Checkmark
Maybe I was just lucky but, to add a positive note to this discussion, I just recently bought a new hp 6550 stationary pc on which windows 7 and skype 5.0 were both pre-installed. In addition I bought the cheapest speakers I could find and a cheap webcam with built in microphone which clips onto my screen. Never used skype before; no previous experience of windows 7 – but skype works just fine! Good sound, good picture, no problems at all.
I have Windows 7 and skype 4.2 that came preinstalled and i can see and hear people when they call, but they can’t see or hear me. Nothing I try to fix the problem seems to work. Any advice?
hello everyone,i am a bit of a novice but i felt the need to share.i started having this crashing, and endless ringing precipitating the crashing problem in late September.i had win7 from the beginning and there was never any problem.at the time the latest version of skype was the 4.2.upgrading to the 5.0 didn’t solve the problem.on finding this forum and seeing that i was not the only one going through this,i felt i had the duty to share what i have learned from coming to you.on reading the comment by jharris1993,his solution seemed to speak the closest to my issues.on unplugging my logitech communicate deluxe,i proceeded to uninstall the drivers and software.i then made sure that i set the skype to sign in anytime i reboot.then i rebooted, and after the process was complete,i plugged in my camera.on recognising the hardware,my computer prompted me to download the software and drivers;i canceled that request and opened skype instead.so far, that seems to have done the trick.for you tech experts out there ,maybe there is some compatibility problem with the driver updates and 7; which then mucks up the compatibility with skype.i don’t know how you would put it,but i am sure that with all of you investigating together,as i have observed, you will come up with a solution.for the mean time,i am back on skype.my gratitude!
cheers!

Hi everyone especially skype developers.
As i am mostly addressing them. I have been using from 2-5 skype versions.
I have tried skype 4.x and now i can use on my win7 x64 skype version 5.x and i am really disapointed to use this UI ( 4.x and 5.x versions). It is not user friendly at all. It makes things even complex. I want the 3.x user interface. I am used to it. Since i use skype for many years up to now. I think the option to change UI or use the old UI would be best. But it could be even better to revive version 3.8 on win7 operating systems. 3.8 skype version is the best from all of them. It works as it is supposed to and you can do everything easy not thinking “how to find this? and this? damn can’t change this. Can’t do this and another. I want that and not THIS”. 3.8 skype UI brought everyone what is easy and clear not as 4.x or 5.x skype versions.
Skype will not simply start with windows 7. It was working ok with the previous version, but now i was forced to update and it’s not working at all. I unistalled, reinstalled, rebooted, tried every trick they recommend online. I’m sorry to tell you this skype….skype is NOT compatible with windows 7
can someone help me out with a no sound issue? windows 7 speakers work with games & stuff. Not on mute…any help appreciated. thanks
Skype is making my Windows 7 OS crash ….. When i login to skype messenger it makes some funny sound tic ttic tic every 6 sec .. then it crashes .. It happens only when i start skype …… i
