Skype and Windows 7

Many of you have asked about Skype and Windows 7 – and I’m happy to announce that Skype 4.1 is certified as being compatible with Windows 7.
If you don’t already have the latest version, you should download it now – it now includes screen sharing as well as improved audio and video quality.
In a future version of Skype for Windows we plan to introduce features which integrate with the improved taskbar and jumplist functions within Windows 7.
Here’s another data-point:
Summary: Skype 4.1 *DOES* work with Windows 7 (at least the 32 bit version), however I suspect that the problems being experienced are related to the webcam drivers and their interaction with skype.
I have a (relatively) lame system that I used to run WinXP on and it ran like a Thing Of Beauty! I popped in a new hard drive, and did a bare-metal install of Windows 7 (professional) on it.
My system is a 2Ghz Athlon XP with 2 gigs of memory
My video card is an NVIDIA 7800 series video card.
I have an ASUS MoBo with a Via chipset.
I have an el-cheapo SIIG sound card that I bought specifically for Windows 7.
I have installed M$ Office 2003, Open Office, Corel WordPerfect, Quicken Premier 2010, iTunes, Winamp, Avira Personal AV, and one or two other sundry things.
I have scanned my machine repeatedly – both within Windows, and externally via Avira’s “Rescue CD” – and my system comes up clean-as-a-wistle.
AdAware also gives my machine a clean bill-of-health.
My machine is a member of a domain that is controlled by a Windows 2000 server.
I am an administrator both on the local machine and on the domain using my current login credentials.
I have insured that there are no orphaned processes within the task manager.
I have UAC turned on. (I did not disable it)
I have fully updated Windows 7 to the latest-and-greatest updates.
I have NOT installed Silverlight.
I have installed PowerShell
I have installed the global policy updates on both this machine and my domain controller.
The (current) domain global policies are pretty liberal – I do not impose much of anything via global policy. A real corporate domain would have them locked down much more tightly than I have.
(b) I have NOT installed Windows Live Essentials.
(c) I have NOT installed “Smart Card Cryptographic” updates.
I am running Skype 4.1.somthing
I used to have a Vivitar ViviCam-35 installed as my web-cam.
This is a REALLY LAME web cam that I picked up at Christmas Tree Shops for – I think – maybe as much as $9. Video resolution maxes out at 320×240 or something like that – and the frame-rate was abysmal. But! It worked like a champ with Skype on WinXP (professional), Vista, and now Windows 7. I have made and received video calls that worked flawlessly for – literally – hours at a time – both from here in the US and when I was abroad in Russia.
I decided to upgrade the web-cam to a Microsoft LifeCam Cinema so that I’d get better video – and if it worked well, I’d buy a 2nd one to take with me the next time I visit the grandkids. (The son and daughter-in-law also have a horridly lame web-cam too.)
I installed the LifeCam drivers and *DID NOT* allow it to install the “Windows Live Essentials” crap that M$ has been trying to ram down our throats (along with the useless as *****’s on a boar-hog “Silverlight” stuff).
I ran the LifeCam setup program and configured the camera for 340×280 (?) resolution as that gave a reasonable picture size with a decent picture at a reasonable frame rate.
I closed the LifeCam software and launched Skype.
I noticed the following:
1. If I simply start skype, it works fine to make a non-video test call to Skype’s echo-test.
2. I can do whatever I want, so long as I don’t go to the Video settings tab under “Options”
3. If I go to the video settings tab, I get no, repeat, ZERO video. However Skype still does not crash.
4. If, and ONLY if, I go from video to audio settings does Skype crash.
4a: I can go to audio settings and do whatever I want, just so long as I have not gone to Video settings first.
4b: However, if I go to video settings, pause there for a moment or two, and then go directly to audio settings, Skype crashes – and the program crash dialog I get in Windows 7 provides the following information:

Conclusion:
I believe that there is something very, very, wrong with the association between Skype and the newer – high-end – web-cam drivers.
I would humbly suggest that the folks at Skype take a look at these crash-dumps, get themselves a Microsoft LiveCam (et. al.), and try to reproduce this for themselves.
What say ye?

Another data point:
Updated to 4.2 (4.2.0.141) as suggested. Noted the following results. . .
Program: Skype 4.2 beta
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional (32 bit)
System: 2.0Ghz Athlon XP with 2 gig RAM
Skype was installed *without* Chrome.
Issue:
Using a Microsoft LiveCam Cinema there is no video. (i.e. solid black rectangle where the video should be)
Issue:
(same setup)
The video control buttons for actually setting up the video camera that normally appear directly below the video frame do not appear.
Issue: (same setup)
If the webcam is disconnected from the USB port with the video setup pane open, I have experienced program crashes. Note that this does not happen all the time, but I have seen this on a couple of occasions. I will continue to investigate and see if I can generate a more repeatable failure mode.

SOLUTION TO PROBLEM!
Hey, everybody! I figured out a way to solve these annoying problems with newer web-cams, skype, and Windows 7.
These are the steps I followed to get everything working:
1. Disconnect any webcam(s) you have connected.
2. Download and install Skype 4.2 Beta:
http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/windows/beta/
Note that I did not try this with the previous 4.1 “released” version, so I cannot say if it works there or not – however I suspect strongly that it will.
3. UNINSTALL any webcam drivers / software that you may have installed previously. Verify that all files and directories are removed.
4. Reboot your machine.
5. Attach the web-cam *WITHOUT* pre-installing the supplied drivers.
Expected result: The web-cam is recognized, all functionality is enabled, and it works like a charm.
6. Launch Skype and re-configure audio and video settings as appropriate.
Expected Results: Skype recognizes the web cam, video works fine, and it does NOT crash!
7. Enjoy Skype with your new web-cam!
Notes:
You will not have access to the advanced functionality or fancy effects the manufacturers drivers/software supply.
You will get some “default” resolution – perhaps lower than you wanted, though possibly the “best” resolution your system and video card can provide while maintaining some kind of reasonable frame-rate.
I have tested this fix with two different web-cams, and it worked for both:
1. Microsoft LifeCam Cinema
2. Phillips Webcam SPC-1300NC
Comments to developers and end-users:
I suspect that the issue here is not, repeat *NOT* with Skype. Rather I suspect an incompatability between Windows 7 and the webcam software.
Since it is apparent that Windows 7 has webcam support for these later webcams built-in – (My ViviCam 35 was way too old and crummy, and needed drivers) – I suspect that when the updated software is installed the native drivers do not disengage. I don’t know if Windows is responsible for that, or the driver installer, but what you end up with is a situation where two different drivers are both active for the same piece of hardware at the same time. And it has been my experience that driver clashes of this kind are the fast-track to hell and a crashed system.
Once you remove the added driver/software, the original native drivers have un-hindered access to the device, and it works like a charm!
What is needed now is for the driver manufacturers and Windows to get their heads together and fix this problem since it really stinks to spend almost a hundred dollars for a top-end web-cam and get the functionality of a $10 web-cam.
Yelling at Skype is not going to help things because their software is working as designed – it’s the idiot drivers that are causing all the problems!

I have just recently upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista. Since then I have had major issues using skype. In most cases I can hear the person on the other end, however, they have a very difficult time hearing me and say I keep cutting in and out. I never had any issues before the upgrade. Was wondering if there are any solutions to this problem.
New PC. Windows 7 64 bit. Skype 4.1 Calls to landlines ring. The other person answers & can’t hear me and I still hear ringing. Skype won’t hang up. The only way out is ctrl alt delete.
Skype also frequently freezes after it has been on for awhile so that I can’t even click on any contacts. Then the OS hangs.
Solutions?
I have had problems with Skype 3.8 under XP (microphone level too low) and have had new PC with Win 7 (32 bit) since December. Tried 3.8 (won’t install), 4.1 and 4.2 beta. In 4.1/4.2 when I call a landline the other party’s voice always breaks up, even though Skype tells me the Internet speed is OK (and I never had this problem before version 4). The Skype call test is always OK except for the first few seconds when the Skype voice breaks up, then it’s OK. I am having to forget Skype for overseas calls and the credit I had is now useless. For overseas calls from UK I use the landline and Planet Numbers instead. I don’t use a webcam, and have tried closing my browser etc., to no avail. I have various headsets/mikes so the problem is not there. I use Avast antivirus.
There are so many problems being reported – please do not ignore the issue. Something is wrong with Skype 4. At the moment all I can use Skype for is chat and it looks as though my credit will go down the drain.
This is a recent development. When receive a call, Skype keeps ringing even when I answer and does not open a video or audio for communications. It just hangs and keeps ringing, the ringing continues even after I forcibly quit Skype. I must restart the computer to go back to normal. I have reinstalled Skype and the issue continues. Windows 7 x64.
Windows 7 64bit Home Premium is working well with skype. no problems with the skype version 4.1.0.179.
I receive the following error message when my laptop boots up. What does it mean? Do I have a virus?
Exception EAcess Violation in module Skype.exe at 00088C4E
Access violation at address 00488C4E in module ‘skype .exe’. Read address 00000000
Hi, I have a brand new hp pc with Windows 7 64bit, used 2 audio devices:-
Plantronics Bluetooth Earpiece and Linksys CIT300, they both cut the Audio intermittently, have to reset both devices. When I have video leaves video connected with no sound.
I have been, for the last couple hours, following forums to try and figure out what the hell is going on with windows 7 and skype – the ONLY way I was able to install skype was to dig up my old hard drive and use the installed progam on it – I tried mozilla, i changed my cashe – I did everything – there is a major problem with skype for windows 7 – and I use linux!
now if anyone can tell me how to figure out my DU@Lphone compatablilty issues it would be very much appreciated..
When I start Skype on my PC(With Windows 7×64) it bugs my hard drive – I opened the Task manager -> Performance -> Resource monitor and on the disk section it shows me that Skype is opened about 100 times. This makes the PC to bug until Skype is closed. I am using the Skype 4.1.0.179. I reinstalled the OS 2 times – same problem. Used different software to search problems in the hard disk – none.
Please show me some kind of solution.
Hello all. I have win7 on my HP laptop, skype works but incoming video very bad quality like granular or mosaic with big boxes(4.1/4.2).I think this is a problem of VP71 video codec under win7.On my BB under windows XP incoming video much smoothly and qualitative. In technical info of the call i cant see any difference/ I have installed k-lite codec pack
Same as others…I bought yesterday a cordless Phone Philips VOIP 321 in order to use it for Skype phone calls instead of the USB or plug headsets.
However, it does not work on HP Notebooks. I was trying to follow the advcies from several sites (uninstalling Skype and VOIP softwares) but nothing works.
I do agree with one comment, the installation must be simple, not so complicated as it is recommended in the brochures (without contradictions). Just a program that we can “Run” and the hardware with the software are easily connected. Adding also the reply from the someone in October 2009 when Windows 7 was not even released is totally unhelpful, without added value and creating more confusion. Please, review it.
Kind regards
Skype 4.1 on my brand new Dell XPS under Windows 7 has been a disaster. No matter what I do (install, uninstall, etc.) the program will not work with any consistency whatsoever. Failures range from no sound, to the program not making any calls and freezing, to the program not starting. I will not use the program anymore because it has wasted so much of my time. FIX IT AND STOP TELLING US IT IS “CERTIFIED”. Whatever “certified” means, it is irrelevant because the program simply does not work, “certified” or not!
New skype 4.2 is no good for windows7… it freezes my computer and keeps ringing that it wont stop till i forcefully shut my computer off. I thought bugs are already fixed.. how come its worst than before?
I have been having problems with windows 7 and skype (the latest version) for about a week and a half now. I did virus scans and worked endlessly to try to come up with a solution. Finally, I think I have a solution. Windows 7 comes with a lot of features that I decided that I wanted disabled when my computer starts up. I wanted to run 60 processes as opposed to 80. What I did was I changed my settings in “msconfig” from my customized start up to normal start up and it changed everything. My picture quality is good, sound is good and the annoying connectivity issues with skype just not working properly (I’m talking about unsent ims and grey circles) has gone away. To anyone who has an hp laptop with windows 64 bit I would suggest that you keep the startup settings on normal. I dont know exactly why this changes things but it does. I know most of us hate long start up times but its not much longer. So that is the trade off: longer start up times over not having the functionality of Skype. You choose.
I also am on Widows 7 Prof. and Skype is not working correctly. I am using a microcam. All test show that everything is fine…but when I call someone, my voice is choppy, and the person on the other end cannot hear me. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all, as well as have done several things mentioned on this post. Nothing has worked. I am almost ready to give up. Has anyone found an answer??? On my other computer with Vista, all is fine.
Bad news. Changing my back to my default startup settings did not really make a difference. I’m starting to think it has to do with hp….bah fix this please!
I have an issue with Skype 4.2.0.152 and Win seven Home Premium 64-bits in my Dell Studio 1555. At first, I can’t answer a call, Skypes hangs. By now, it directly doesn’t run. What can I do to fix this? Thanks.
I am having similar problems to those mentioned. I have 4.2.0.152 running in Windows 7 32-bit with a Logitech 9000 webcam. I have uninstalled the Logitech driver due to problems and am using the generic MS driver. In options the webcam works. Skype hangs when trying to make a call, the ringing continues until I close the process.
I have windows 7, 64 bit. VX3000 camera. All my outbound audio sounds choppy whenever I have video running. None of my contacts can understand me. I have a high bandwith internet connection. Also, I have a problem with Skype crashing/becoming unresponsive when I attempt to make a call. Same problems with Skype 4.2 and 4.1. Obviously, the latest release of Skype on Windows 7 is NOT ready for primetime, to put it kindly.
Skype 4.x in Windows 7 x64 just completely mangles the computer, making it impossible to run any programs after trying to answer a call. This is just hilariously pathetic. Learn to code, kids
Windows 7, 64bit. Tried 2 different webcams same result black screen, HP Cam even showed that it was compatible with Win7 64bit and Skype. Tried everything in tech support Downloaded Beta 4.2.0.141 same results. Cameras work in all other apps just fine. Doesn’t look like Skype and Win7 are good playmates.
I have three PCs running Windows 7 Home Premium. My main computer running on 64bit, is having no problems. The other two (one pinetrail netbook 32bit and one htpc 64bit) are showing the endless ringtone bug with a Logitech C600 camera attached. I did not test it without the camera, but voice only calls with the camera connected do not work either. Strange thing is, it works with some contacts sometimes and it does not matter if they are running Win7, WinXP or Linux.
I’ve not been able to use my webcam on skype since i upgraded from vista to windows 7. Whenever i want to activated the webcam, i get the following msg: “cannot access your webcam. Please close down all applications using or showing video.” Can anybody help pls!!!
PROBLEMS SOLVED!
Have an Acer 3810T with Windows 7 Home Premium. Had the same problems as many where my laptop would freeze and I attributed it to Skype. I reformatted my drive (lost all of the pre-installed Acer applications in the process). Did not help. I uninstalled all applications and reinstalled them one by one, observing fist before installing another application. Still had the freezing. Finally brought my laptop to Acer, they installed the latest BIOS and now, everything works like a charm – including Skype 4.2 (with camera even). Boot up time is under 1 minute. Hope this helps.
Well, it doesn’t because why should we “the consumers” have to reformat our computers for one program like skype. I’ve been reading up on this windows 7 issue and maybe they should come out with a new version for 64 bit too. They have had problems since last year with this issue of crashing, ect. Its bad it needs to be corrected.
If flashing the bios is what does the trick you can do that by downloading an update. I flashed my bios for my hp laptop running windows 7 64 bit. I dont know if it will do the trick but skype connected a lot faster after I flashed my bios.
hp has laptop updates here:

Hi every one,
. I do this and now I have fine working Skype (audio, video and ets.)
Have a simple way to use Skype and Windows 7 x64 (or x86) – just install Skype 3.6
P.S.
I try 3.8 but Skype crash every 20-30 sec. after sign in.
theb.a.x,
It turns out, I did not have to reformat my laptop to get the proper solution. All I should’ve done was to bring my laptop to Acer, get them to upgrade the BIOS to the latest version – with all my files and software intact – and my problem would’ve been solved earlier.

I have a Dell Studio XPS with W7 Professional 64 bit. I can sign here on this blog, I can sign in on my Dell in XP mode, but when I try and sign in in W7 mode I get an error message saying “your Skype Name and password were not recognized. Please check and try again”. I tried to work around this issue by creating a new Skype Account with a new Skype Name (using valid characters only), but I always get an error message saying it contained invalid characters
Why can’t I sign in using Windows 7? Is the issue linked to the invalid character issue? I’ve tried a clean reinstall using Revo to uninstall everything (incl 60 registry keys) but no joy.
I have the same problem of Geoff (see above). When trying to sign in it gives me “your Skype Name and password were not recognized. Please check and try again”. I also tried to work around this issue by creating a new Skype Account with a new Skype Name (using valid characters only), but I always get an error message saying it contained invalid characters. I have Windows 7 and the Skype 4.2 version downloaded.
I also tried to login to Skype with same username and password in a different computer and it works.
Please help! I spent three hours trying to fix this problem. I’ve even disabled the Firewall with no avail.

Hi, I have Dell Inspiron 14 with windows 7 64-bit using Skype 4.1.0.179
When I receive a notification in Skype Chat with headphones on, all sound gets redirected to my system’s onboard speakers, including the Skype notification noise, regardless of my headphones. If this happens frequently enough, my system’s sound control will freeze along with Skype and occasionally the shockwave players on my internet browsers.
I have also upgraded to Skype 4.2.0.152.

Nope, this one crashes Windows 7 too. What other options are there out there. I’m tired of trying this one.
Im having the same issues. New computer with win 7 64bit. Tried reinstalling Skype 3 times. Now I cant even make calls anymore. It will let me chat, until i make the call. Then it freezes and just keeps on ringing and ringing. I have to force shutdown. If someone calls me then its the same, it wont let me pick up and I have to force shutdown to make it stop. EVEN after logging out of skype it continues to call.
Has someone had any success in this at all?
I’m having similar issues with Windows 7 – I can’t make a test call or even change my settings – the app just keeps freezing.
I’m using Dell hardware with a Logictech webcam – is there resolution for this issue? I’m using the latest version available at the time of writing – 4.2.

I think this is the probably the closest I’ve ever been to flaming… Honestly, the new “improved” features that cannot be turned off are as annoying as Microsoft’s MSN’s, which caused me to stop using it. I would really like to be able to just minimize skype back to the system tray like before (or notification area as microsoft now calls it…). Having skype take my workspace to show me ifo I don’t want to know is driving me insane. Otherwise, skype is a great software. It’s really an annoyance, nothing more. But forcing it like this is so in the “microsoft” modus-operandi it’s been disappointing.

I bought a new quad processor computer with 32 bit Windows 7. It was fine, no problems. I installed Skype 4.1 to hook up with my family in N.Z., and bitterly regret it. Skype would not recognise my microphone, crashes I.E.and will not completely uninstall. I am faced with the prospect of re-formatting the hard drive to get rid of this. Skype in its present form is not compatible with Win7. Install at your peril.
I am having problems with Skype at 64-bit Windows 7. From time to time, my messages do not go away. There appears a moving round icon next to the time of the message. That time freezes and does not change if I send other messages (which don’t go away either). At the same time, I have a weird looking Skype icon on my task bar – a regular green spot with a white check mark with a “1″ (standing for one message) on the orange background. But unlike its normal appearance, the orange background with a “1″ is shifted to the top.
I need to reboot a computer to get rid of the problem. Using Task Manager does not help. Very, very irritating. Happens every day.
I have been using the latest Skype 4.2 and it keep crashing/halt my Windows 7 Enterprise whenever I try to make a phone call using Skype. Where can I find a fix for it? Thanks.
I have the Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000, works great with MSN but is “uncompatible with skype”. Was looking forward to this. Not so much now.
