Skype for iPhone 1.2: adds call forwarding, SMS and quality improvements

We’ve updated our iPhone app – you can now make video calls.

The latest update to Skype for iPhone and iPod touch brings a number of improvements:

  • You can set up call forwarding from your iPhone – forward Skype calls to a phone number when you’re not signed in, so you can pick up calls even when the Skype app isn’t running on your device
  • Improved performance and better audio quality when making Skype-to-Skype calls
  • It’s even easier to send text messages (SMS) – you can now send SMSs from the Call tab

For those of you in need of a refresher, it also lets you make free Skype-to-Skype calls, and save money with great value calls to landlines and mobiles. Calling is only available over a WiFi connection, but all other features (SMS, IM and presence included) work over any mobile data connection too. Full details are elsewhere on the website.

Get it now (opens in iTunes/App Store)

Well, since 1.2, app won’t start

  3. moin703 said 1384 days ago

Thanks Peter. Where is the ‘settings’ page where I can opt to have my skype app display my status as active if my iPhone is locked out. This was mentioned in the update screen on the AppStore. Also I’m guessig still no Push? Thank you

  4. tomayacolega02 said 1384 days ago

Just updated to 1.2. Now Skype crashes everytime when logging in

  5. rademobile said 1384 days ago

Same probleme, no push, this is a joke?

  6. antonioj07 said 1384 days ago

Another LAME update. Still no push notifications! The single most important feature it could have on an update is still absent making the app useless

  7. rajavikramc said 1384 days ago

Damn! Dont u guys read your own blog or user requests or what? Everyone over here is asking for push and you cant do that. Every other small app has got tat! What is wrong with you guys? Tats it. I m going to choose another voip application. Ciao.

After updating skype will crash after logging. And I see I am not the only one having this issue. Before it worked soooo good!
Iphone 3GS here, up-to-date. Any help?

  9. rajavikramc said 1384 days ago

And one more thing, Bragging that skype has been downloaded million times and is among the top apps in the store isn’t enough. What you guys do for those one million users counts. But you don’t CARE. You dont really care. Right! Sorry if I am being harsh, but thats the TRUTH.

People! your Skype 1.2 not working ?? delete the app, reboot your iphone, reinstall Skype 1.2 – Working fine here!

  12. tomayacolega02 said 1384 days ago

Tried to uninstall Skype, reboot iPhone & fresh install… still doesn’t work, keeps crashing. iPhone 3G S v3.0.1 here as well.

  13. hydseek said 1384 days ago

I propose to all Skype users that we bury this trash and useless application and instead start supporting applications with PUSH. Yahoo Messenger with Push is excellent and I am sure Yahoo can be persuaded to release a VOIP for iPhone. This Skype team is trash and does not deserve our patronage.

The app v1.2 crashes and crashes and crashes. It is useless in this current state
It crashes on incoming calls, it crashes on typing an outgoing number (after the 6th digit/character e.g. +49611x). I hope this will be fixed immediately.

  15. riseoftherobots said 1384 days ago

Dadly experienced many crashes with this new update also, so I uninstalled and reinstalled and now it works fine.

Would be nice to have PUSH though!

  16. janos.talas said 1383 days ago

    No push?
I’m just curious: how many “f. U” messages do you delete from the comments in a day?
    Shame. You WERE the best…

  17. mpostolna said 1383 days ago

How about a simple sound alert for received messages? and PUSH. Without push, this app is useless.

  18. iphonemessenger said 1383 days ago

I agree no Push makes this app redundant what a waste of time!

  19. vasman-inmarket said 1383 days ago

You must be kidding, right? No PUSH notifications again? It’s been forever since OS 3.0 is out. Even fart-apps have push, why Skype doesn’t? Without push its 90% useless.

  20. froilandebenito said 1383 days ago

I have the same problem: OS 3.0.1 in an iPhone 3GS (32 GB). I have been using Skype without any problem but today I upgraded to 1.2.0 and, since then, everytime I start Skype it shows the initial screen, logging in and then… it closes.

I have shut it down several times, reboot it twice and nothing happens.

I have re-downloaded from iTunes and supposedly reinstalled: nothing.

I want to try deleting and reinstalling from scratch but I don’t want to lose my contacts and other information. Do you know if I loose everything if I delete and reinstall?

    Thanks in advance.

  21. murray.sophia said 1383 days ago

Where is the PUSH? For heavens sake, next update better be soon, and better have PUSH!

  22. riseoftherobots said 1383 days ago

for people who experience the crashes:

to get it working do not delete and re-install through iTunes, but on the iPhone itself, by holding your finger on the Skype icon and then pressing the little red ‘x’. Then reinstall it though the app store on the phone.

Saying that it only seems to work for a couple of days and then you have to do it again, so come on Skype, get us a bug fix ASAP, or at least release a statement on this issue!!

oh, and once more for the road, PUSH!!!!!!!

  23. seo.rin said 1382 days ago

I’m like… really sad, because I used this a lot and really relied on this app and now it doesn’t work. Same problem, crashes on log-in. I tried to reinstall, reboot, but it still won’t work. =(

  24. markus.kasten said 1382 days ago

Nice, but I still use Nimmbuzz because Skype4iPhone has no PUSH!!!!

  25. laurent.mascherpa said 1381 days ago

Please let us know when Skype for iPhone will be available in the App Store in Canada.

  26. niklaskrake said 1380 days ago

This is Crashing when I try to login…. BAD BAD BAD

Please FIX it!!! I need it at my job!

  27. fred_golightly said 1379 days ago

Did you guys test this update? Please offer a way to go back to the previous update to this one! I updated it, and now it does as others are saying here. It just crashes EVERY time now.

At least offer a way to roll back to a version that WAS WORKING PERFECTLY before your updates. I don’t think that’s too much to expect.

  28. peterparkes said 1379 days ago

@moin703 you’ll find it in the Settings app

To those of you who have experienced crashes, the 1.2.1 update should fix them. Head over to the App Store and download it now.

  29. rockylaroche said 1377 days ago

Still crashing when I try to login. The previous version was working just nicely. Please try to fix the problem asap.

  30. niklaskrake said 1374 days ago

    1.2.1 (1.2.0.111) C’mon it’s crashhhhiing. Pls’ Fix it.

  31. krusher_r said 1368 days ago

I just picked up the 3rd gen iPod Touch and put Skype on it right away. Seems to work good here; no crashes so far with OS 3.1.1. I agree with the other comments; it needs Push more than anything else now so we can receive phone calls or IM’s while doing other things.

  32. tenshinoneko said 1366 days ago

    We need push….

  33. dfranciscomurphy said 1195 days ago

I have a 3GS IPhone and I have been using Skype with no problem except for call forwarding. I have the international plan, and when I am in Japan (where I live) I can have my calls forwarded to my cellphone. But while I am in Thailand for some reason the calls are usually not forwarded when the SKYPE application is closed. However, when the SKYPE application is open in a WIFI it may work. Any ideas on what the problem is?
