AT&T: One step closer to Skype calls over 3G

We’ve updated our iPhone app – you can now make video calls.

In a filing today responding to the FCC’s inquiry into its role in the approval of apps made available through Apple’s App Store, AT&T said that it plans “to take a fresh look at possibly authorizing VoIP capabilities on the iPhone for use on AT&T’s 3G network.”

If this policy is changed, you may be able to make calls to other Skype users, landlines and mobiles over 3G from your iPhone.

We welcome AT&T’s willingness to take a fresh look at this issue and hope this is a step forward in enabling consumers to use Skype together with their iPhones and 3G connection. We look forward to hearing more about any potential change to AT&T’s policy, in connection with the pending FCC proceeding related to the Skype petition (RM-11361).

All of us at Skype want to encourage other wireless carriers around the world whose policies block or discourage Skype use to re-evalute their policies and to make it easy for their users to take Skype conversations with them when they’re on the go.

    If this happens, it will be a complete paradigm shift. AT&T would benefit in the long run, I would instantly shift my entire staff, who travel internationally, to iPhone with Skype.

    My guess is the traditional phone calls are subsidizing the data access. If VOIP becomes wide spread, declining revenue in the traditional phone calls may force rethink data access fees.

    @jnwhy97 –THANK YOU captain obvious!!

    Now for something completely different: A human being has compassion for his fellow man…

    Yes phone companies would have to re-think data fees, but hopefully not by suffocating data to pad their pockets.

    AT&T release today that VOIP over their network is NOW allowed. It is only fair that they allow VOIP over their network. AT&T just release in select areas the AT&T MicroCell. This allows your 3G Iphone to connect to your home WIFI and place call over someone else internet connection. If they had not changed their tune, they would have lost the battle.

    So, when is Skype going to upgrade the IPhone app to allow for 3G network Skype VOIP calls?

    Now both AT&T and Apple allow VOIP. I suppose Skype is the only one holding us up on the VOIP over 3G network on iPhone.

    When will Skype release an updated app?

    So I suppose this is Hype then? It is now late January, a new version of Skype has been released for the iPhone, but still no skype over the 3G network for the iPhone app?? Its funny – i have an INQ which uses Skype over the 3G network of the provider 3 UK… but on the same network with the same provider because of contractual obligations, I cant seem to use skype on the iPhone!

    @hugeauxg Apple is preventing us from releasing a 3G-capable iPhone app – more here.
