Hi I was wondering if they would add Armenia to the list of Skype supscription countries. Because you guys will benefit a lot since Armenians contact Armenia a lot we spend like 55 dollars a month on calling cards. Please Consider this. Thanks

Why does the U.S., U.K., and every other country have the ability to have a skype number and not Canada!!!!!! My intention in setting up a subscription with skype was that family and friends could still contact me wherever I traveled without costing them money. Isnt that the intention of VOIP? Why does Canada’s CRTC prohibit this?

WHEN IS CANADA GOING TO HAVE ACCESS TO ONLINE NUMBERS!?!?!?! It’s RIDICULOUS that a country so small – Malta – now has service (no offense), but Canada does not ?! How long will Canadians have to wait? Why is it so difficult to get us onboard? Canadians are waiting…and waiting…

but still no SkypeIN service in Taiwan? Do you have schedule for this issue?

  10. alkalinejustin said 1369 days ago

I’ve heard about SkypeIn for Canada for a long time, some people say it’s the CRTC in their efforts to protect the phone companies they’re in bed with, others say it’s Skype themselves not having the technology when we all know they do (Obviously), so what gives. Well, it’s why Canadians pay so much for cell service and everything else, just like when our dollar was even with the US and we still paid too much for TV’s, Cell phones and everything else. It’s the reason we have contracts on our cell carriers when the UK has never heard of a “cell phone contract”. Here is the answer you’ve been waiting for, WELCOME TO CANADA. Our government and regulators think we’re rich when in all reality we’re not, only those certain Canadians are, and trust me they don’t use Skype cuz they’re loaded enough to not care and use their Blackberry to make calls on a phone that you and I pay for with taxes. Ah the world is full of crooks

For those of you who wonder why we cannot have SkypeIn in Canada here is the answer. Governments are often blamed for many malfunctions in a country and that is well recognized and understood. The main problem in industrialized countries is this phenomenon typical to all human beings called sucking. That, my friend, is one human trying to get a favor from another one by providing a gift. Humans are suckers, and this is present everyday with your friends as well as your corner merchant as well as government level. Only, at the government level it’s called lobbying. Some big companies like BELL or ROGER or FIDOS are putting pressure on the CRTC to prohibit SkypeIn in Canada simply because they are well aware of the following lost of business if SkypeIn was permitted. And those idiots at the CRTC are accepting bribery to maintain the prohibition. And it’s the people of Canada who suffer. The most outrageous crime on earth is lobbying. Lobbying should be banned and sentenced to life imprisonment. For, at the end it is a form of organized crime that prohibits the people to enjoy an honest government that govern for the people not for its individuals.

Hopefully I will guided to the right place (forum, support, etc.) to help address this issue.

I was very excited to learn about SkypeIn number in the Netherlands. I just found out yesterday and immediately bought a (020) number (local Amsterdam) number for EUR 50 + 19% VAT. for one year. This is a great price if in fact it can be used by locals. The online number is now 3120839xxxx.

I found something very strange though. When I called my new number from my cell phone the number calls through to Skype as expected. However if I call from a landline, you don’t dial the country code +31 because it’s from within the country. So I dialed 020 as one normally would and got the following message, “Het door u gekozen telefoonummer kan geen verbinding worden gemaakt” which means that it treats the number as if it does not exist.

Am I doing something wrong? Has anyone else seen this? Where and with who can I discuss this to resolve it and be happy with my purchase?

  16. peterparkes said 1312 days ago

@chris.perabo – sorry to hear you’re having problems. I’ve asked the people who deal with online numbers to investigate, and will let you know when I hear back from them.

I am also a Canadian living in Japan, and with such a huge time difference it would be nice to have an online phone number. I also think it is ridiculous how there are 25 countries and none of them are CANADA! It makes me so angry!
    Come on Canada!

The simple fact that not all countries have SkypeIn yet or for that matter those that do but not yet have Caller ID available for SkypeIn numbers, is that those things take time. And indeed as some have already pointed out, there are phone companies lobying to prevent it. Whe in the Netherlands finally got SkypeIn (or the more general term, Voip-In) but to this day, we still don’t have the option to activate callerID for our SkypeIn numbers. We can only activate caller ID, for our existing mobilephone numbers.

It’s simply RIDICULOUS that CANADA is not in the list of countries with SkypeIn. What are they waiting? Who are they being bribed by? We have to DEMAND SkypeIn for CANADA!!!

  29. ms_e_jones said 1185 days ago

SKYPE: If you aren’t going to provide online numbers for Canada then please make a public announcement stating your reasons. The country of Malta has 400,000 people and they have online numbers. There are over 33 MILLION people in Canada and for some reason we don’t? Skype isn’t naive enough to not recognize the financial opportunity of implementing this service in Canada, so what is it?? There must be a pretty substantial reason for keeping Canadians in the dark….

  30. sonburn said 1166 days ago

I call for a boycott from all Canadian Skype PRO users until we are provided with Skype Online Numbers for Canada. Stop paying for service until we get full service!!!! This has gone beyond ridiculous. I know that there must be a gray area there somewhere as other voip companies have provided numbers in Canada. COME ON SKYPE… Give me a number for BC!!!!

  31. jctcom said 1149 days ago

I have been in contact with CRTC via their online complaint form and received this reply from them:

    Dear Mr. Taylor:

Thank you for taking the time to contact the CRTC.

The CRTC is not directly involved in regulating the services provided by internet based services. Wireless, long distance and internet services are competitive services and are subject to very limited CRTC regulation. The Commission does not regulate their rates, quality or provision of service, or their business practices.

In order for international companies such as Skype to provide Canadian numbers, they would have to become a Canadian reseller. To do that, they would have to enter into a business relationship with a Canadian carrier. They would then obtain the Canadian numbers from that carrier as well as other services required by Skype to provide a PSTN-interconnected service. This applies to all foreign companies wanting to provide Canadian numbers.

To the extent that Skype interconnects with the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in Canada – that is to say, it connects with other telephone numbers whose users have not downloaded the Skype software – Skype has certain obligations. Skype would be required to register with the CRTC; enter into a business relationship with a Canadian carrier to obtain interconnection to the PSTN; and, as a matter of pubic safety, Skype would need to ensure that calls made to 911 are completed through 911 call centres, also known as the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). As in the case of numerous other competitive service providers in Canada, it is a business decision of Skype, if it chooses to meet these obligations and offer such a service in Canada.

For more information about the services offered by Skype, or its availability with your service provider, you should contact Skype and your service provider. If you make Skype aware of your desire for its services it may keep this in mind when it is assessing its business decisions as to the types of services it will make available in Canada.

I have also sent them back this reply to their response:

Why do we have these ridiculous requirements in Canada where as in the rest of the countries (Including the US) Skype is able to make the disclaimer that it is not for emergency calls and does not replace a regular phone system. We as Canadians are not interested in these restrictions imposed by CRTC (For the sole purpose of making it harder for interested competitive systems to be allowed into Canada) and want them lifted so that we can enjoy this service!

Until such time as this is resolved I will be directing / Encouraging other people to also post this complaint with you (Unless you can direct me to whomever is directly responsible for these regulations that other countries do not seem to have problems with).

    Carl

I would encourage everyone who wants Skypein phone numbers in Canada to go to CRTC’s website and start posting on a weekly basis our dissatisfaction with this situation until it gets resolved. We have been waiting long enough and it is about time that CRTC’s outdated regulations to protect the local phone companies got lifted!

You know, just reading the last article, I think that Skype should get together with a Canadian compagny like http://www.Cantalk9000.net or maybe http://www.cantalk9000.com to set-up something for Canada.
Others offer Canadian numbers. Why not Skype ?.

PS: I would really Like to have a Canadian 1 800 number from Skype so that customers could call me free anywhere in Canada, not the opposite.
Any chance this will happens ?

Priority —> Canadian Skype-in Number this year.. .!!

I have a South African SkypeIn number, and it suddenly stopped working. Support has been very friendly and refunded me the subscription fee. I was told to re-subscribe and it should work. It still did not work. I now have tried a third time, and still nothing. Is anyone else having this problem? If Skype support is looking at this post, then how long will it take to get this working? When the number is called, it says the number does not exist.

Skype, I’ve given up waiting for a Skype In number for Canada. I got one from Toktumi…and I am paying $15/month for it. This is the sound of a customer willing to pay more* walking out the door……

*more than Skype Pro monthly. 4-5 times more in fact…

I will be spending 2 months in Ohio from South Africa so have just signed up for local SkypeIn numbers in Marysville, OH and Durban, KZN. So far both are working…

Wow, I thought I was going to be the only one complaining about no online number for Canada. Looks like lots of people have been asking for a long time. I have tried to be loyal, but http://www.majicjack.com just announced numbers for Canada.
Price is $40 for the first year and then $20 each year after that (that’s right – each YEAR not month) unlimited calling in US and Canada and a local canadian number from any province and voice mail, called ID and EVEN 911 service. Good-bye SKYPE!

I’m glad to see I am not the only Canadian who has been frustrated by this lack of Skype online numbers for Canada. There must be millions of us who have been waiting for this for a few years now! I have been regularly writing to Skype about this for three years. They keep telling me it is due to protracted negotiations here and a thicket of bureaucracy and regulation that even a company with their ingenuity cannot find their way through. It is the CRTC again and their regulations that is BLOCKING this from happening. Why? to protect their master Bell. I have just written to Charlie Angus, the digital affairs critic of the NDP, who was a loud voice against Usage Based Billing recently. I urge others to start writing to members of parliament about this block against Skype entering the Canadian market with Canadian numbers. There must be millions of us waiting for and wanting this. Let’s start trying to get this issue onto the front pages, too. It is another disgusting example of how we Canadians are being held back and left in the digital dust — by little countries like Malta no less!
